Execute Unrestricted Submarine Warfare: The History of the US Submarine in WWII on Wednesday, March 11 from 11 a.m. to Noon. Free Event. The US Submarine Force stands on the shoulders of a mere 16,000 men who, by the end of World War II, converted a new and untested weapon system into one of the country's most potent. With a complement of only 2% of the navy's personnel, the Submarine Force virtually destroyed the Empire of Japan's maritime presence. It sank 55% of Japan's merchant fleet and 33% of its warships. This record was not without risk as the Submarine Force was the most dangerous of any branch of the US military. It lost 22% of all submariners who sailed these frail crafts into harm's way. Join researcher John Lindstedt as he tells the story of how brave men and their battle under dangerous circumstances, equipment failures, and poor tactics emerged by wars end as true heroes in protecting the American homeland. Life Enrichment Book Club on Thursday, March 12 Noon at Café LaBelle. Free Event. "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. Set in the near future, The Handmaid's Tale describes life in what is now called the Republic of Gilead. The Republic is a mono-theocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population. Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order, tells the story through her eyes. In condensed but eloquent prose, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment's calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried

to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid's Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is Margaret Atwood at her best. The Handmaids Tale is a novel of such power that the reader will be unable to forget its images and its forecast. No registration is necessary, and new members are always welcome. Books are available at Books and Company in Oconomowoc. You may be eligible for a 15% Book Club discount when you mention the Life Enrichment Book Club.

Memory & Miscellanea: Simple Bookbinding For more than 2,000 years, the Japanese stab binding has been coveted for its simple yet durable design. The binding or stitching itself is exposed on the exterior of the book and begs to be incorporated into a design. This

technique allows the most novice of book artists the ability to bind a book rather quickly with stitching that can span from the understated to extremely intricate. Each participant will have the opportunity to create several side-stitched books for sketching, journaling, or scrapbooking mementos. The workshop will begin with practicing our stitching, measuring, and cutting techniques by binding a small softcover pocketbook. Then with the use of our new-found knowledge, we will construct a more ornate side stitched book with the addition of a personalized hardcover. All supplies will be provided.
