What is that crawly little thing anyway?

And by the way, the Adelgid is a small aphid-like insect that is attacking hemlock from Nova Scotia to northern Alabama and doesn’t even need sex

to reproduce!!

OLLI Senior Citizen Scientists Unite! Submitted by Jo Hendry, Class of 2012

What is a Hemlock Wooly

Adelgid, and why do we care?

Just over a year ago, OLLI inaugurated a statewide Special Interest Group (SIG) devoted to learning to identify pests that threaten New Hampshire forests, including that Adelgid. Dr. Barry Rock, Professor Emeritus, UNH, along with Isabel Munck, US Forest Service Plant Pathologist, Kyle Lombard, NH Division of Forests and Lands, and Ryan Hanavan, US Forest Service, offered day-long training sessions in Concord and Portsmouth to close to 30 OLLI members.

We learned how to recognize some of the diseases and pests endangering our forest environment, which ultimately endangers humans, and then how to report them to the appropriate environmental organizations. Recently, Dr. Rock presented a follow-up session on identifying trees in winter. The group plans to meet again on a Saturday in May to refresh our knowledge and hunt down more pests. We hope we don’t find them, but if we do . . .

Interested in getting involved with this active outdoor group? Want to have impact on what we can do to protect our forests? Check your OLLI catalog for the course entitled Saving the Planet, One Senior Citizen at a Time! Dr. Rock, Isabel and Kyle have teamed up again to offer training sessions at three sites: Conway, Portsmouth and Manchester. We have fun while contributing important data about the health of our forests. (see pictures at left.)

Surging SIGs (Special Interest Groups) Special Interest Groups are emerging as one of the most valuable member benefits of OLLI. Generally they are

developed at the individual learning site by one or more members with a special interest looking to share that interest

with other OLLI members. Sometimes they are a way to continue learning and doing something that started with an

OLLI class; other times they are based on a hobby or activity that’s more fun when shared with friends. Around the

state SIGs are gaining traction – they are free, fun and one more way to learn and hang out with OLLI buds. And

members from all sites are welcome at all SIGs. Unless otherwise noted, SIGs meet at the local GSC campus.

The OLLI Concord Area Hiking Group will be hiking the trails to Great Turkey Pond at the Silk Farm Audubon Center on Saturday, March 21 at 10:00 a.m. until about noon. This is a fairly flat trail and is a great way to get outdoors as spring approaches. I hope to see you there!

For further information and to be added to our mailing list check out our website at https://hikeconcordolli.home.blog/ or contact Ray Mercier at (603) 831-3083. See you in the woods!

Seacoast Political Book Club

Monday, March 16, 1:00 p.m. Submitted by John Russell, Class of 2014

The March selection for the Seacoast Political Book

Club is White Working Class by Joan C. Williams.

White Working Class is a blunt, bracing narrative that

sketches a nuanced portrait of millions of people who

have proven to be a potent political force. For anyone

stunned by the rise of populist, nationalist movements,

wondering why so many would seemingly vote against

their own economic interests, or simply feeling like a

stranger in their own country, White Working

Class will be a convincing primer on how to connect

with a crucial set of workers--and voters.

Please join us to discuss this interesting book. RSVP to

[email protected] so we can have a headcount

in advance.

The Koreans will return to OLLI in May Submitted by Mike Baker, Class of 2010

Thrilling general audiences around the country from Beverly Hills to Derry NH and OLLI members from the University of Richmond, to Georgia Tech, to Dartmouth, and for the fourth time at Granite State College, the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (KSCPP) is returning to Manchester on Saturday, May 5 at 1:00 p.m. To accommodate the number of members who will attend the event, the program will be held at the Birch Hill Retirement Community. Seats are currently available, but this is one of Manchester’s most popular offerings, so don’t delay in signing up. This year’s program, King Sejong the Great, will offer both a historical perspective on the cultural achievements of Korea and a look at contemporary Korea and its impact on the world. Their presentation, featuring authentic traditional Korean costumes, is followed by a delicious luncheon showcasing traditional Korean foods served in Bangja Bronzeware, so don’t eat too much before you come to this event. Following the Korean tradition of Hongik Ingan, “Live for the benefit of all mankind,” the KSCPP was established to share the rich cultural legacies of its country and to thank the many nations for the reconstruction of Korea in the years following the war. The KSCPP has performed over 1,800 programs and demonstrations all over the U.S. and more than 15 countries. The organization receives no government funding and does not rely on external donors. It is supported by private initiatives such as making and selling traditional foods, volunteer efforts, publishing books, preparing video documentaries and organizing public lectures and demonstrations. For a truly rewarding cultural experience (and a full tummy) be sure to mark your calendar for May 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Birch Hill Retirement Community, 200 Alliance Way, Manchester. Register right away – online or by calling the OLLI office!

Coming Soon: A Special Conway Lunch and Learn Submitted by Betsy Gemmecke, Class of 2008

Representatives from the eleven towns in the Mt. Washington Valley (MWV) have come together to make the MWV an Age-Friendly Community, using the AARP/World Health Organization Livable Community Framework. They are using the combined talents and resources of local residents to further develop the area as a place for people of all ages and abilities to thrive.

Convened by the Gibson Center for Senior Services in 2018, this coalition has been working on improving services in the areas of housing, health, community connections, outdoor spaces and transportation.

They want to have our OLLI members learn about and perhaps join this exciting effort. To that end, the Conway OLLI Central Committee is hosting a Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, April 14 at noon so that all can be informed about this collaborative initiative.

The next issue will offer more information about a few of the things that have already been accomplished but we

want you to SAVE THE DATE: April 14 at noon. We will offer desserts and drinks, so just bring a bag lunch to

GSC in Conway and learn how this community effort will make all say “they would rather be here than anywhere!”

Chair’s Chat – Guest Columnist

Please accept this personal invitation to attend a Steering Committee meeting. If you wish to do so, simply notify our chair, Sharon Kace, at [email protected]. If you do, you will receive a detailed agenda of topics relating to both statewide concerns and your local site's interests.

At the meeting you will find many volunteers, well-intentioned and always respectful, who listen intently, speak their minds, and vote seriously. Your site's Central Committee chooses voting members for Steering, and they serve a two-year term which is renewable.

Also, our chair may choose at-large members who have an important perspective. In a collaborative manner that has been fostered by our former director, Jane Fletcher, a significant part of each meeting consists of updates from office staff.

Nothing I have written so far does justice to what happens in a single meeting of Steering or on an ongoing basis. So, you really ought to take the initiative to sit in! Intending to be all- inclusive, we rotate our meetings through the four learning sites, so you can participate at Portsmouth (March 23), Conway (May 18),

Terms of representatives change each July 1st, so this would be a good opportunity for you to self-nominate by speaking to someone on your Central Committee.

As one who expects to rotate out of office this year, I definitely want to see active participation by our members to ensure the continued good health and vitality of this OLLI program that we all appreciate, benefit from, and enjoy. With your help, just like Star Trek, OLLI will live long and prosper.

Bill Faulkner, Vice Chair

Steering Committee meetings rotate around the state to give members the opportunity to observe our governance structure firsthand. The next OLLI Steering Committee will meet on March 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Portsmouth campus of GSC. All are welcome!
