coming to a new worship time will be your Lenten discipline. This is not easy. We know this. This decision was not made lightly. Still, for others of you, this is a long-awaited change. One of the benefits of this change will be a regular education hour. Many of you have asked “What classes
will be offered?” The classes during the education hours
will be biblical/ theological and leadership training classes. Different kinds of biblical/ theology classes might be "An Overview of the Bible," "Lutheran Theology 101," "A Study on the Gospel of John," "The Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer," "Living the Life You've Always Wanted," and other classes. Short-term leadership training classes will include training for ushers/ greeters, assisting ministers, new group leaders, leaders for Alpha, how to pray, etc. Many of you gave additional suggestions for classes in the survey. Thank you for the feedback. We are already implementing one of those new ideas. Several requested Spanish language classes, so beginning March 1, Pastor Gabriel will be teaching a beginner level Spanish class. All of these classes can be found on page 9. It is my hope and prayer that we focus on the long-term benefits of this change as we move into this new normal. And let us keep our focus on our relationship with Jesus as we Journey to the Cross this Lenten season. Grace and Peace, Beth Warpmaeker Senior Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As I mentioned in a recent sermon, one of the books the church council reads every year is a book entitled “The Balcony Perspective.” Each
year, the church council is reminded that they have a very important
wisdom and perspective they bring to the decisions we make as a congregation. In the book, the day to day worries are described as being on the dance floor. When we are caught up with daily ministry and personal concerns, we are caught up in what is called the dance floor. That is an important place to be. However, the church council has been asked to see from a different perspective. They have been asked to climb up to the balcony. They are to have the balcony perspective and wisdom MORE than the dance floor perspective. They are called to look at the day to day operations, but mostly they are called to reflect on the past and the future direction of God’s church and the ministries at Kinsmen. The dance floor
AND the balcony perspectives are important and both perspectives bring wisdom to any decision that is made, but sometimes the balcony perspective calls us to look beyond our own wants and needs and stresses to the bigger purposes and to the long-term priorities of God. As we begin the season of Lent, we will be entering into a new discipline and practice as a congregation. You (through the survey) and the leadership at Kinsmen recently made a difficult decision that will affect many in this congregation. This is the decision to change our worship times. This was a decision that the church council believes will benefit the long-term vision of this congregation. I hope that each one of us will try to see things from the long-term, balcony perspective as this change is implemented. For some of you,
Pastor’s word
Grace and Peace,
Save the Date! Mark your calendars! The Installation worship service for Pastor Gabriel will be at 4:00 PM on May 3. This will be a bilingual worship service, and all are invited to attend. A reception will follow in the Community Life Center.

NEW SERMON SERIES Join us this Lenten season as we begin a five-week journey into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Together we will read through the Gospel of John and see how Jesus enters right into the mess of our lives with his grace and forgiveness. On the weekends we will look at Jesus’ one on one encounters with the
devil, with a religious leader, with a woman full of shame, with a man born blind, and with a friend he raises from the dead. On Wednesday evenings, we will meditate on Jesus’ “I AM” sayings. No matter
how messy our lives are, Jesus reaches out to you and me to initiate a one on one relationship.

Midweek Service Focus: I AM sayings During midweek Lenten worship, we will be focusing on the “I AM” statements of Jesus from the Gospel of John. A quote seen on social media states: “I AM. Two of the most powerful words; for what you put after them shapes your reality.” This midweek series will help us imagine that what Jesus puts after “I AM” in the Gospel of John shapes
our reality.

Mark your calendars for our next Abendmusik event!
Abendmusik and Endowment Committee present “John: His Story.” This brings to life the great miracles performed by Jesus chronicled in the Gospel of John. Recounted by ordinary people who bore witness to Christ, these moments of comedy and drama combine for a moving account of the story of Jesus, remembered by his beloved disciple, John. As we journey through Lent, share the story of Jesus, as chronicled by his beloved disciple. The performance will last approximately 11∕2 hours.

A.D. PLAYERS ON TOUR PRESENTS

Multi-Perspectival Book Club—March 19 One of our congregational goals is to increase our cultural awareness. One way to do this is by reading books that highlight different perspectives and then discussing what we learned from that perspective. In January, the Long Range Vision team had a discussion on Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know.” For
March, we will be reading the book “Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black
Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the U.S.” We will meet in the Library
at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 19. Refreshments will be served. If you want to join in the discussion online, go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1894176700684999/ Here is an Amazon link to purchase the book—https://amzn.to/2SUPBbx
Are you interested in a trip to the Holy Land to visit our mission partners in Bethlehem? A group of 27 people are going in June 2020. We were full, but there are two spots that are available, so you can still go! Check out the brochure in the narthex at church or email Pastor Beth if you want her to email you a copy of the brochure.
Holy Land Trip
This term of our Bible study marks the 20th year for this small group at Kinsmen. It was started in the spring term of 2001 by a former member and has met continuously since that time. There are some in the group who have been there since the beginning! We have also had several women from other faiths and churches join us throughout the years.
We first started meeting in a classroom but quickly outgrew the space and moved to the choir room. We stayed there until the Youth and Family building was ready when we began to meet in the community room. We decided to decorate that room and the crosses you see on those walls were brought by each of the ladies attending at the time. We also pooled funds and purchased the clock and the labor of hanging all and painting was supplied by one of the women as well.
During our 20 years, we have studied God’s word, prayed for each other and shared in fellowship together. We have helped some ladies bury their husbands, provide meals during recovery from surgery or illness and have just been a friend when needed.
We have also had a servant’s heart and sent packages to soldiers, collected school supplies for neighboring schools, stuffed Easter eggs, provided treats for KCA on Halloween and Valentine’s Day as well as gifts for the teachers themselves. We helped neighbors affected by Houston’s notorious flooding with cleanup and meals. We also do a ministry with greeting cards and prayers for those we feel need to be lifted in prayer. For the last several years we have also provided the Kinsmen staff with a Christmas lunch in someone’s home.
We try to find studies of God’s word using a video based study, a few days of homework, and then go over the weeks video and homework together in small groups. We invite anyone interested to join us any Thursday morning. We are always open and flexible and would love to see you! The number of ladies goes up and down, the faces change, but we go on.
Our next study will start March 26 with the book of Job.

Bloodmobile - The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center donor coach will be here on March 22 from 8 AM – 12:30 PM. Blood donations are crucial at this time because it will help patients through and recover from Spring Break. Additionally, in 2019, Kinsmen helped save over 200 lives, with the blood donations with the donor coach. This is absolutely amazing. Please sign up for your appointment at kinsmenlutheran.org
Housing need From time to time we are in need of housing for a seminarian or graduate student. If you have a rental property, garage apartment or a similar housing option, please let Pastor Mark know.
We have received a thank you note from Lutherhill Ministries. All thank you notes are posted in the hallway by the church offices for viewing.

noisy offering
March 7 & 8
It is our custom to collect a Noisy Offering for a Mission Partner on the second weekend of every month. March’s offering will be collected for Lutheran World Relief. LWR is breaking the cycle of poverty for lasting change and is our partner in global relief and development since 1945. Founded by Lutherans in the United States at the end of World War II, grounded in Lutheran theology and building on decades of experience, LWR tackles global poverty by helping people adapt to the challenges that threaten their livelihoods and well-being. LWR works with people based on need, regardless of race, religion or nationality and it does not evangelize. LWR provides aid in emergencies and helps families restore their lives. LWR partners with communities to build and grow rural economies. LWR breaks the cycle of poverty, so families and communities can thrive. GOAL: To help people build self-sufficiency and create new community-owned approaches to problem-solving that will last long after the projects end.
MISSION: Affirming God’s love for all people, LWR works with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering. VISION: Empowered by God’s unconditional love in Jesus Christ, LWR envisions a world in which each person, every community and all generations live in justice, dignity and peace. VALUES: LWR is grounded in profound thankfulness for God’s gracious, self-giving love for all humankind, revealed in the redemptive acts of Jesus Christ. Gratitude marks the way we relate to one another and to all creation. Though our experiences vary, we view community as a gift. We give thanks for our wondrous diversity. We celebrate being alive. We abound with joy, hopefulness, hospitality and deep appreciation for the gift of one another (Psalm 136). Today, LWR operates in East and West Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East, helping some of the world’s poorest communities build the resilience they need to thrive.
Lutheran World Relief Quilting Can you tie your shoes? How about iron? If you answered yes to either question, consider joining in the quilting bee for Lutheran World Relief on Saturday March 21 from 9 AM – noon in the gym. This will be our last quilting bee for the 2019-2020 season. Come for an hour or stay for the day. Training is provided.
When you make and send a Quilt, you are not only comforting someone you have never met, but providing an object that is useful in ways you probably never imagined.
The ultimate purpose of a Quilt is to provide warmth, an essential need for people in every climate, and LWR tries to ensure top standards in fabrics and filler accordingly.
In addition to being a cozy, clean new bed cover, it can be: a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; a shawl; and most importantly a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot.
If you have questions contact Connie Jackson, or Lynnae Schatz ([email protected]) Blest be the ties that bind our hearts in Christian love!

Lutheran World Relief and Personal Care Kits Lutheran World Relief and Personal Care Kits
This Lent, we will be joining Lutheran World Relief (LWR) in A SEASON OF HOPE to announce to the world the HOPE of Christ. We will collect items for Personal Care Kits that give people around the world the tools to stay healthy in life’s
most challenging situations. Our goal is to assemble 150 LWR Personal Care Kits. We will collect items in the narthex from Ash Wednesday through Maundy Thursday (April 9). The items needed for the Personal Care Kits are:
• Light-weight bath-size towel (between 20” x 40” and 52” x 27”), dark color recommended
• Bath-size bars of soap – in original wrapping – 3-5 ounce bars.
• Adult-size toothbrush in original packaging
• Sturdy comb
• Metal nail clippers
In 2019 alone, 137,760 Personal Care Kits reached struggling families in 18 countries. Lutheran World Relief can’t keep
up with demand. Without your love, families will suffer. Simply drop off your items at the table in the narthex through Maundy Thursday (April 9). The kits will be assembled on Good Friday (April 10). Be watching for more details on the kit assembly. Thank you for your extraordinary generosity.

ENDOWMENT NEWS “May the God of hope fill you
with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
A Note from Craig Sutter about the Endowment Fund:
In her sermons, Pastor Beth has often talked about the importance and power of keeping an “abundance mentality” rather
than a “scarcity mentality”. As someone who makes a living in sales, I am very familiar with the ups and downs that come
with these mentalities. Early in my career when things would go well, it was easy to keep an abundance mentality, but I would become vulnerable to thinking that my success was solely of my own doing. Inevitably, that would be followed by a period where I would go into a slump and my confidence would wane, leading to scarcity thinking.
What I’ve learned over the years is that confidence is a fragile thing, but God’s love for us is rock steady. If we trust in Him during both good times and bad, he will always provide us with exactly what we need. So if things are not going so well at the moment, keep trusting in Him and look for opportunities to take actions that reflect your faith in Him. Likewise, when things are going well, show God how much you appreciate His abundant gifts by sharing those gifts with others.
It will soon be “bonus season” for many working professionals and one way to express your faith and thankfulness is to
apportion a gift to the Kinsmen Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund enhances the financial stability of Kinsmen and provides security for the future. Your contributions earn income that is used to fund ministries in accordance with the funds distribution policy and in keeping with donor intent.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
