Jeff’s Journal by Jeff Drowley

The Sportsmen Show led to a large number of people signing up for Columbia Basin Fly Caster’s classes.

Fly tying classes had 21 people signup, and 14 showed up for the first meeting on February 12 in the loft at the back of Sportsman’s Warehouse. The class instructor is Craig Anderson. The class is held Wednesday evenings 6 PM to 8 PM.

The Rod Building Class is scheduled at the same location and times starting March 18 and running through April 15. The class will be taught by Mac Ryan. There were 14 people signed up for the rod building class, and assistance in teaching is needed. Wanda Shearer is the contact point for the volunteers.

Additionally, we had 37 people sign up for Fly Casting instruction. The dates for this are not yet set, but expected to be in mid-May. This will have its own notice in future newsletters. We are looking for assistance to the lead on this event given the large number of people signed up.

I’m looking forward to our fishing events this year. We have our customary venues/times (Rocky Ford in late March, with Jim Loomis leading; Sun Lakes April 29 to May 2, with Rich Holten leading; Anthony Lakes August 20 to 23, with Craig Anderson leading; Lochsa River in Idaho September 10 to 13, with Craig Anderson leading; and a new event, Potholes State Park in September 27 to October 3, with Dennis Collins leading. These will each have their own notices in the newsletter, so keep an eye out for the announcements.

In addition, at the Sportsmen Show, we were asked to support a Heroes on the Water (HOW) event at Leech Lake in late May. Our

involvement would be to teach these veterans how to cast: HOW will be providing the veterans with kayaks, rods, reels and presumably flies (although we didn’t get into that much detail in the preliminary discussion). As more details become available, they will be announced in the newsletter.

The annual banquet is coming together well under the leadership of Craig Anderson with assistance provided by Wanda Shearer. There is a fly tying demonstration, and afterwards we will need to ensure the banquet room is set up for the fly raffle, silent auction (which will have hand-crafted items from members this year), and dinner. Craig may ask a few of you attending the fly tying demonstration to stick around and help with the banquet room setup.

Annual Banquet, Don’t Miss It!!

by Craig Anderson

Our Annual Banquet is Saturday, March 7 at Meadow Springs Country Club. Devin Olsen is our speaker and guest tier and his subject will be Tactical Fly Fishing, based in part on his book of the same title. The fly tying clinic is at 1:00PM at the Club, the evening activities starting at 5:30 with bidding on silent auction items and the fly raffle. We have over twenty boxes of flies for the latter and a number of items for the silent auction including a rod built by Al Beatty, metal art work, fly vests, an over-the-net seine, back pack, tying kits, a to-go bag with all of the materials to tie flies on an outing, wine basket, a Dennis Dauble-written and autographed book, tippet holders, quilt, etc. So bring your checkbook or cash, as we cannot accept debit or credit cards. Tickets must be purchased by March 1 and are available at Sportsman’s Warehouse for $45

Columbia Basin Fly Casters March 2020 Newsletter Page 3 of 8

apiece or through Craig Anderson at (509) 378-7849, text or phone. Any difficulties, call Craig and he will get tickets to you.

Rod Building Class Mac Ryan and Wanda Shearer will be teaching the rod building class which will start March 18, 2020. It will be held at Sportsman's Warehouse on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to closing. The preparatory meeting to order rod building materials will be Monday March 2, 2020 at 6:00 PM at Sportsman's Warehouse. Instruction is free; but each student will be responsible for the purchase of the materials for the rod of their choice. Please call Wanda Shearer at 208-463-9559 before Monday, March 2 to let her know you are planning to attend the class. There is nothing quite go grand as catching a fish on a rod which you have made. Come and join in on a new experience.

Monthly Dinner Cost Due in part to inflation and in part to the raise in minimum wage in Washington, the cost of the monthly meeting dinner must be raised to $20. Members are reminded that the program portion of the meeting remains free and dinner attendance, while encouraged, is strictly optional.

Kids Fishing Day This April is the annual Kids Fishing Day at Columbia Park, currently scheduled for Friday April 17 4-7 PM and Saturday April 18 7AM to 3 PM. The Friday evening is set aside for special needs kids, and the Saturday is for all the kids. This is a volunteer supported event, and more volunteers are sought in the

areas of handing out rods, mentoring the fisher kids (which could include rerigging tackle), the registration table, t-shirt distribution, and tagged fish prize distribution. We had a brief sign-up at the last meeting, and would normally have another at the next meeting, which is only a few days before the event. Look at your calendars and make some time to get kids involved in fishing. At the April 14 meeting signups will be available from Dale Schielke, but with the short time before the actual event, pre-planning is required by the members. There will be a dinner after the Friday event, and lunches and non-alcoholic beverages are available Saturday.

Club Outing to Potholes State Park

by Dennis Collins

Mary Ann and I have been going to Potholes SP for the last couple of years, the fishing is good, the weather has been good and the camping is great. Last year Ganos joined us for several days and we had a fun time.

We are planning to go again and would like to invite the club to join us. We are going on Sept. 27 to Oct. 2. There were very few campers and the campsites are easy.

They close a lot of the lakes on Oct 1 so there's a ton of water to fish.

Check your calendars and let's go fishing.

Grande Ronde Access After negotiation concluded, a consortium, including Columbia Basin Fly Casters, and led by Wild Steelhead Coalition, succeeded in buying 8 acres on the lower Grande Ronde River that includes an access point for the lower river. Now this land will be forever available for public access and use. The land is to be turned over to the state of Washington. More information on this can be found here.

Club Website Update New to the area and wondering where to fish? Long-time resident and having trouble finding a new place to fish? Two new additions have been made to the club website that will help answer both questions. The first is called Fly Fishing Around the Tri-Cities. It contains a summary of places to fish around the Tri-Cities including descriptions and directions and when to fish them. Various seasoned members of the club have contributed to this document including Rich Holten and Sheldon Coleman. The second is a database compiled by Ted Poston of every destination written about in Northwest Fly Fishing over the past 20 years. There are over 1000 destinations indexed by state, regions within the state, water type, fish species, and more! You can use this massive database to easily identify specific destinations or to find places to fish while on your way to anywhere in the Pacific Northwest.

Both of these documents can be found on the Resources tab of our website.

Tlingit Salmon Recipe by Mike Wade

Twenty years ago our family took an Alaska inside passage trip with Norwegian Cruise Lines. Being their first year in Alaska, Norwegian used a smaller vessel than their competitors and was able to go places the others couldn’t. One of these was Haines, a small village in the Chilkat Valley. The highlight of the visit was a salmon feast and cultural presentation by the Tlingit Indians. The salmon was delicious and when I expressed a desire to obtain the recipe, the gorgeous young cruise director, whom we had befriended the previous night, quietly slipped into the kitchen. Minutes later she emerged with this recipe which has become a family favorite: Ingredients, per pound of salmon filet:

2 tablespoons packed Brown Sugar

2 tablespoons Cider Vinegar

½ teaspoon Salt

½ teaspoon Pepper

1 teaspoon liquid Smoke Rinse filets and score them, avoid cutting the skin. Mix all ingredients together as a marinade. Brush marinade on fish. Wrap in plastic wrap, then put in baggie. Refrigerate at least 2 hours (overnight is best). Barbecue over medium coals. Do you have a favorite fish recipe? Share it with the club by submitting an article for the newsletter.
