Dear All
When God came to Earth in the form of Jesus he set about making some changes. For example, by the time Jesus arrived not working on the Sabbath meant not being allowed to set a broken bone, not cutting your nails or carrying any heavy burden. These rules had been developed by t he Pharisees as a ‘way of life’ to ensure people kept the law. Jesus said, “the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.” (Mark 2:27). It was supposed to be a day of rest but not to the exclusion of doing good. Jesus healed people on the Sabbath.
Reflecting on why we do things is always useful. We have been looking at our magazine. This is put together, organised and distributed by a group of volunteers. Our magazine is much valued but some minor changes may mean that it becomes easier to complete by the deadline of having it in the churches by the first Sunday of the month.
Another change this month for Wye Reaches, is that we have decided to have just one Mothering Sunday Service on March 22nd at The Old Court. Over the last few years, attendance at Mothering Sunday services has dropped significantly so we though we would try a new approach. We hope the central venue and fresh approach will bring in new people who can hear the Good News.
Jesus brought hope to many despised people but he did this challenging the status quo and demonstrating God’s love for the people who are part of Creation.
Blessings, Penny

New roof Our smart new chancel roof seems to have survived the storms The contractor has decided that the ceiling inside has had enough time to dry out and as I write it is being painted. This will mark the end of a job which took so very much longer than any of us had anticipated and cost so much more.
We very much hope that more people will come forward and join the PCC. For Dixton to survive we really need some fresh ideas and people to implement them. There was an encouraging turnout for a meeting held recently at Bridges to discuss the future of Dixton and we all hope that this will provide some impetus for the future. One of the initiatives suggested then was to have an active Facebook page, so hopefully those of you who use Facebook will look out for this and do what you can to 'share' it. Please do come to the APCM on 6th April at 7pm at the Old Court Hotel, Whitchurch whether you want to join the PCC or just see how it all works. Everyone is welcome.

FROM THE CLERGY
When you have your child Christened, you are thanking God for his gift of life, deciding to start your child on the journey of faith and asking for the Church to be there for both you and them as life goes on.
Christening or Baptism, marks the start of a journey of faith, which involves turning away from darkness of self-centredness, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family.
Baptism is a 'sacrament': a visible sign of God's love. In baptism, we are thanking God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledging his love. We are acknowledging that we all need to turn away from the darkness of evil and to make a new start with God.
This is the same whether it is a child or an adult. There is no age limit to being Christened and an increasing number of people are waiting until
they are adults before they come forward to be baptised.
If you feel unsure as to whether your children would want to be Christened when they are older, then we can offer a ‘Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a child’. You can ask for this whether you are their birth parents or adoptive parents. It is a very simple service just saying thank you to God for the gift your child.
If you would like to talk to anyone about Christenings and thanksgiving (or anything else), please get in touch with any of the clergy or churchgoers in your parish.

God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.

LENT IN THE WYE BROOKS BENEFICE
There will be a film-based Lent course, as last year, and Lent lunches. Lent Course - Casablanca In the Wye Brooks benefice the Lent Course this year is based on the film Casablanca. Casablanca was released in 1942 and was Humphrey Bogart’s first romantic role. There is plenty of food for thought in this great film. It’s important that you watch the film beforehand and if you haven’t seen it or been to one of the two showings at the end of February you might be able to borrow the film from Revd Ben from 1-3 March. To maximise the number of people able to get to these each session will run twice, and will consist of two clips of approximately five minutes each and guided discussion. We’ll aim to finish in an hour and a half each time.

Start time is 12.00 noon. Days of the week vary. Everyone is welcome, and you certainly don’t need to be a regular churchgoer. Just come and enjoy the food and the company.

From the Hereford Diocese
Spring officially begins this month and with it a new season. The traditional pattern of spring cleaning derived from the understanding that with winter past and the promise of better weather now was a good moment to refresh and make new. The season of Lent also begins this month. It similarly encourages us to reflect, take stock and focus on the things that really matter. With that in mind I, with others wish to encourage us all this Lent to give time for some particular attention to prayer. You will have received a letter with venues, dates and times. If not, details can be checked on our Diocesan Website. Four services are planned, to be led by me with the assistance of Bishop David Thomson and Tessa Wilkinson. Services start at 11am, and will include a period of extended prayer (with different “ways” available including silence), and will end by 1pm, with drinks available afterwards. Attenders can bring a packed lunch if they wish. The dates and times are:
Tuesday 3rd March St George, Pontesbury
Monday 9th March St Mary, Ross on Wye
Saturday 14th March Holy Trinity, Hereford
Wednesday 18th March St Laurence, Ludlow
Do take note. As a diocese we are in a time of change and transition, both challenging and exciting. Please, if you
can, join me to pray. We will have a range of topics including our diocese, our communities, our commitments as an Eco Diocese to care for the environment and importantly for our new Bishop Richard. My wish is for the renewal of our own lives as we live Lent together.
Two booklets are available, for adults and for families. You can download a sample or buy copies at https://www.chpublishing.co.uk/features/live-lent.
There will also be an updated #LiveLent app, an email feed, a social media campaign, a skill for smart speakers and more.
See The Church of England website for more information and for details. Please help publicise the campaign by using the online resources from The Church of England and visiting our #LiveLent web pages.
On a personal note this will be my last parish letter as Bishop of Ludlow. After nearly 11 years I am retiring in early May with my final farewell service being at Cathedral Evensong on the 26th April. All are welcome and there will be refreshments afterwards. Simply let the Cathedral know numbers. It has been a joy and privilege to be part of this diocese over these years. I leave with many happy memories from sharing ministry, embracing our common life together and in seeking to serve over these years. In a poignant way this is for me certainly a new season.
+Alistair
