Hard to believe that the first day of spring is less than a month away! The snowfall over the past few weeks has been especially challenging for many of us. School and event cancellations, dangerous driving con-ditions, not to mention shoveling, shoveling, and more shoveling! It’s a good reminder that sometimes things don’t go as planned and that we need to be flexible. It also highlights what a strong sense of community we have here in The Dalles. Over the past week, I’ve seen so many examples of people helping others: shoveling snow for those who can’t, helping watch kids during school closures and late starts, helping give rides to those not comfortable driving, the list goes on and on. As the win-ter weather comes to an end (hopefully soon!) I’d chal-lenge you to keep an eye out for opportunities to help others. In other news, the 2019 legislative session is in full swing. This year’s session can only be described as massive. There are thousands of bills being discussed, so many that the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce has declined to generate a list of legislative priorities, and is instead taking positions on a case by case basis. Your Chamber recognizes that the enactment, amendment, or repeal of certain laws can have a major impact on our members and their businesses. If you are aware of any laws being taken up during this year’s legislative session that you feel the Chamber should be supporting or op-posing, please contact us. We want to hear about it!

As we begin our 7th season we are excited to announce our opening registration for our “Sunsational” Charm Trail! Have your business be part of the Trail that leads tourists and locals into your business! Many of the Cruise Lines promote this FUN activity to their passengers and the American Empress sells our bracelets on their ship! The passengers love the souvenir they get to take home with them and the adventure it creates around town. Last year many businesses sold out of their charms due to the high demand of charms! Each charm is unique to the business or to the area and people are excited every year to see what new charms we added to add to their collection. If you wish to sign up and be part of our “Sunsational” Charm Trail give us a call at (541) 296-2231 or email [email protected]

BusinessMonthof theBusinessMonth
The small business of the month program is designed to recognize the dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by small businesses within The Dalles community. The goal of the monthly award is to highlight a small business and give them extra marketing exposure to aid in growing their business.
We asked NW natural, our 2018 Business of the Year, to select the Business of the Month. The business is selected based on their quality customer service, willingness to go above and beyond and overall impact to our community.
Congratulations to Beachwood Eatery for being January’s Business of The Month! Owner Kenny Caitlin has been hard at work providing people with not only amazing food but also amazing customer and community service. When the snow hit hard, Kenny delivered meals to stranded truck drivers at Memaloose Rest Area. This kindness and can-do attitude makes him the kind ofcommunity member we are proud to call our own. During the worst of the weather, he also made himself available to plow people’s sidewalks and driveways. For those who are interested, he is also currently offering a service to scrape snow off roofs with prices starting as low as $100. Kenny embodies both community-minded service and the entrepreneurial spirit. Beachwood has evolved and is evolving every day to better
serve its customers and its community. From a food truck to brick and mortar restaurant. From hamburger experts to a greatly expanded menu. Beachwood strives to keep your favorites on the
menu, while keeping your interest with new items and specials.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to support this
amazing business yet we recommend you get yourselfin their doors and experience first-hand their friendly service and first-rate faire. They offer top-quality
diner food, gourmet hamburgers, the best Cuban
Sandwiches in town, brunch buffets, weekly and daily specials,
catering services and more! Thanks again to Beachwood for all they do for
their customers and their community.
CONGRATULATIONS BEACHWOOD EATERY!

MARCH 2019
The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce was able to send all of our “Explore The Dalles” Tourism Team (Katie, Chloe & Dave) to The 2019 Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show in Portland. The show is the largest sportsmen’s show west of the Mississippi River and the second largest in the country! We were able to offer some of our local Chamber members a spot in our booth for them to give samples, talk about and sell their products! We featured wine from Tierra de Lobos, delicious samples from Columbia Black Garlic and coffee from Post Canyon Coffee Roasters. Northwest Graphic Works, Zim’s Brau Haus and Balch Hotel also joined us to make connections and to talk about the many wonderful things they each had to offer! We loved that we were able to offer that to our members and next year we hope to expand our booth size to share with more members and to make The Dalles shine more! The crowds themselves loved interacting with our vendors and there was plenty of product samplingand sign-ups for The Dalles Giveaway Basket. The free-to-enter giveaway basket was a huge draw for attendees and aided our tourism team’s efforts to hook people on the idea of The Dalles. The Dalles Chamber of Commerce and the winners of the basket, (a couple from Central Washington who were quite thrilled with their luck) offer a big thank you to the amazing mem-bers who donated to thegiveaway basket! Those who stopped by the Explore The Dalles booth and had a moment to talk to our staff were very receptive to the idea of The Dalles as a getaway
destination and the tourism team was able to give away over 1700 Explore The Dalles brochures to interested parties. Many people were especially interested in visiting The Dalles during NW Cherry Festival and Gorge Hops & Hogs this spring and summer. Many attending vendors were also interested in attending/vending our events in the future. This increased outreach is vital to the growth of such events. We talked to exhibitors, guides, speakers and companies that we are excited about following up with! “Columbia Black Garlic is ever so grateful to The Dalles Chamber of Commerce for providing space for uswithin their booths at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman Show last month. The Chamber staff were sohelpful and fun to be with. Because of the experience – we now realize that we can justify having our own booth next year. Hopefully it will be right next to them!” – Cindy Brunk, Owner of Columbia BlackGarlic “The show was a great opportunity for exposure and adverting, while also generating actual sales! Participating at this show was a no-brainer and I’m very grateful for the invitation and with everyone at the Chamber of Commerce that made this such a successful event. Being a member of the Chamber has been one the best investments I’ve made and I look forward to many years of partnership!” – Adolfo Mollinedo, Owner of Tierra de Lobos “An honor to represent our wonderful community at the PNW Sportsman show, so many faces and questions about our area. We loved answering questions and giving recommendations to future visitors in the area. The chamber did a great job putting this together, with the goody bags to the Awesome gift basket with a little something from local businesses.” – Venus Allison, Owner of Post Canyon Coffee Roasters “Such a blast to be there with this group to represent and promote The Dalles. I loved talking to all the happy attendees of the Sportsmen’s Show about what The Dalles has to offer, just an hour and 15 minutes away.” Connie Ford, Owner of Zim’s Brau Haus The Northwest Sportsman Show was a big suc-cess for us and for our vendors who were able to attend with us! We had a blast and are excited for 2020!

For the last few months the Chamber Ambassadors have sold 50/50 raffle tickets at Business After Hours with half of the winnings going to the lucky winner and donating the other half of the proceeds to the local BackpackProgram. Starting in August of 2018 they have raised $296.00 for the Backpack Program to help with costs of food, bags and materials. They are hoping to grow that amount by selling more tickets and educating the public of this amazing program! The Backpack Program is a community-wide effort to provide food for food-insecure students over the weekends. The program currently provides food for over 100 students in our elementary schools, middle school, and high school. Volunteers meet on Thursday mornings at 10:00 to pack grocery bags with enough food for two breakfasts, two lunches, and snacks.
The last school year the Backpack Program handed out 3,491 bags to local schools.
High School – 483 bags of food Middle School – 125 bags of food
Dry Hollow – 434 bags of food Colonel Wright – 432 bags of food
Chenowith – 1703 bags of food Cross Roads – 314 bags of food.
They need about 2000 bags to get through the year so ask your friends to save them for you, too. Donations of money can be sent to the church, just mark Community Back Pack in the memo line and send it to FUMC, 305 East 11th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058AMBASSADOR KUDOS We want to give a huge Kudos to a fellow Chamber Ambassador Mark Brown, Owner of Northwest Graphic Works for pledging to donate
100 bags every quarter for the Backpack Program. As well as Chamber Ambassador Carmen My-ers, Branch Supervisor of Columbia Bank for holding a food drive and getting the word out about the program.

Six local community members went head to head for Mid-Columbia Community Concert Association’s “Dancing with the Gorge Stars”fundraiser. Each contestant was paired up with a professional dancer from the Utah Ballroom Dance Company, and given one week of training. This year’s contestants were Patrick Erickson, Stacey Heath, John Bate, Cindy Russell, Maria Peña, and George Mickens. In the end, George took home thecoveted mirror ball trophy with his untouchableballroom hip-hop routine to MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This”. This event has proven to be a community favorite and we hope that it continues for many years.

In conjunction with the anniversary of the flooding of Celilo Falls, The Next Door will celebrate the mural on its new office at 1113 Kelly Avenue on Saturday, March 9th from 11am-1pm. A tribute to Celilo Falls, the subject of the mural, with special guest speakers will take place, in addition to an open house with snacks, beverages, and kids’ activities. The whole community is invited to the official unveiling of the beautiful mural, created by artist Toma Villa.A bit about the mural: Long before any tribal people were on Mother Earth, the Creator made a very special place, Celilo Falls, or Wyam, meaning “echo of falling water.” The falls thundered on the Columbia River, serving as a center for culture, trade and fishing for thousands of years. On March 10th, 1957, The Dalles Dam flooded the falls. This mural is a tribute to these great falls which were sacred, and in recognition that this was a terrible loss.

Senator Ron Wyden and Google teamed up to announce a new initiative designed to help closethe homework gap for students with long commutes. Google and Senator Ron Wyden hosted an event in Dufur, OR celebrating the launch of Google’s Rolling Study Halls program, an initiative that brings Wi-Fi to students with long commutes in 16 communities across the country. Google provides each school district with Wi-Fi (via fully-functional school buses), computers, and onboard educators for the school buses. The new program helps students reclaim more than 1.5 million hours of learning time that would otherwise be lost during long bus commutes. Senator Ron Wyden announced the program’s arrival at Dufur School alongside students andadministrators who use the outfitted buses daily during the 2018–2019 school year. “Access to education and training in rural Oregon requires students to connect to technologies that can help them learn and compete in a global economy,” Wyden said. “I am glad Dufur has earned this opportunity to be part of Google’s creative approach linking students with this innovative educational link outside the classroom.” “We’re so thrilled to have Senator Wyden join us here in Dufur to celebrate the newest Rolling Study Halls district,” said Alex Sanchez, a spokesperson for Google. “It’s important for students everywhere to have access to the tools they need to learn every day.” According to AEI, one out of four U.S. students are educated today in schools defined as rural, which means that more than 10 million students may not have reliable access to an internet connection at home for schoolwork. In partnership with CoSN (Consortium for School Networking), Google is working closely with districts to start closing that homework gap forthousands of students across the country. Rolling Study Halls is part of Grow with Google, a new initiative to help create economic opportunities for Americans. The program aims to give people across the United States resources to grow their skills, careers, and businesses by offering free tools, training, and events.

MID-COLUMBIA MEDICAL CENTER TO OPEN URGENT CARE AT WATER’S EDGE As part of its mission to spread health and wellness throughout the community, Mid-Columbia Medical Center is closing The Bistro at Water’s Edge and incorporating the space into an Urgent Care Center, an enhanced Performance Gym and expanded workout area. “To continue an emphasis on community wellness, MCMC must focus on our core business of improving health. As part of that effort, we are closing The Bistro at Water’s Edge to make room for a service that will benefit all Gorge residents. It’s a win-win for the community and our employees,” states Dennis Knox, MCMC President and CEO. The last day of service for The Bistro is to be determined. There is no planned loss of personnel at The Bistro. Staff who want to make the transition will be transitioned into the existing kitchen staff at MCMC. To serve Water’s Edge staff during this transition, fresh food vending machines will be available on the second floor of Water’s Edge starting November 21, 2018. Free coffee will be available on all three floors for staff starting November 28, 2018. It is planned by mid-2019 for a full service coffee cart will also be available at Water’s Edge for staff and the public. The date is to be determined, as the coffee cart will be included in the Urgent Care buildout. Construction bids are due 11/30 and the selection process is due by 12/14, with contracting and mobilization to follow. The contractor is a key partner in determining the actual start date of the project, which will impact the close date of The Bistro. “The past year has been a time of tremendous change for staff, patients and the entire community as Mid-Columbia Medical Center moves towards a more sustainable future. We appreciate the public’s patience with any disruptions of service as we implement our new Urgent Care facility, which will benefit all Gorge residents by providing additional access to medical care,” states

PURE YOGA WELCOMES CHELSEA ABBOTT TO OUR TEACHER FAMILY!
We are renovating our guest rooms at The Dalles Inn. Now offering modern decor and an array of fresh perks, including new paint, furniture, mattresses, linens, pillows, vinyl flooring and carpet; flat-panel TVs and updated bathrooms. Our hotel was a fantastic place to stay before renovations mostly due to our fabulous crew and their vast knowledge in the customer service/hospitality industry, but these changes have set an entirely new standard of excellence. We are so proud of our rooms and very ex-cited to see what our guests think. Mitch Leslie, Project Leader and his Assistant Cody Reiten have done an amazing job, without them this would not be possible. We have a historic building with well over 50,000 square feet, it is a huge project! The hotel is still very much in renovation mode as we are continuing to serve our guests during this process. We are hoping to be finished just in time for the busy summer 2019 season.
Chelsea is a beautiful soul you just want to be around! Check out her regular class on Tuesdays at 4pm in The Dalles and look forward to other classes she’ll be subbing. Trust me...you want to make it to her classes! Chelsea starting yoga 5 years ago when she became pregnant with her first son and was looking for some relief from sciatic pain. Her midwife suggested yoga and she followed. She instantly saw the benefits it had on her physical comfort, letting go of unwanted anxiety and depression, and connecting with her higher self. It is also ideal for her traveling lifestyle, something to stay focused on wherever she is and all she needs is herself. She did some training in her home state Utah and then finished her 200 hour yoga teacher training in Vinyasa through Pure Yoga. She trained while she was pregnant and became very in tune with practicing through pregnancy and postpartum. She believes very much that our bodies and spirits talk to us and tell us what we need in the moment if we just move and listen. She lives with her hus-band and two boys between the U.S. and Beirut, Lebanon and where ever else they stop along the way. The gorge being one of her favorite spots.
