Satilla REMC Foundation’s Generous Donations Benefit Technical College Students and Programs

he Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) Foundation donated two checks totaling

$15,000 in November and December for education to ben-efit area communities and residents of Southeast Georgia. The significant donations will support student and pro-gram success at Wiregrass Technical College and Coastal Pines Technical College through scholarships, equipment, capital projects and other worthy investments that promote a highly skilled workforce. Funding for the awards was made possible through voluntary contributions of Satilla REMC members who round up their monthly electric bills.

At the Fitzgerald presentation, Jim Tucker, Chairman of the Satilla REMC Foundation, and Matt Parker, Secretary of the Satilla REMC Foundation, presented Wiregrass Technical College President Dr. Tina K. Anderson with a $5,000 check for students in the Coffee County area. Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC), which began offering classes in July 2014, was established from the consolidation of Altamaha Technical College (established 1989) and Okefenokee Technical College (estab-lished 1965). For many years before the merg-er, the Satilla REMC Foundation championed the mission of the former colleges and provid-ed financial support. Dr. Glenn Deibert, CPTC President, accepted a $10,000 donation for the CPTC Foundation at the Satilla REMC main office in Alma. “Generous donations to the CPTC Foundation by our local community, like Satilla REMC, benefit our students and benefit our local employers in need of a skilled workforce,” says Deibert. “Satilla REMC is a longtime supporter of Coastal Pines Technical College, and we appreciate their continued support.”

Jeff Davis High School Student Takes First at Area VI Wiring Event

Ty Padgett, a Jeff Davis High School senior, finished first in the Area VI EMC CDE wiring contest.

eff Davis High School senior Ty Padgett won first place at the recent

Area VI EMC Career Development Event (CDE) at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Padgett com-peted against 10 contestants from surrounding counties. For earning the highest score from the Satilla service area in the wiring contest, Padgett will receive the $500 R. L. Lanier Scholarship from Satilla REMC. The son of Jason and Sweetie Beck, he plans to use these funds to further his education and pursue a degree in electrical engineering. Padgett joined other area win-ners Jan. 12 at the 51st annual EMC/FFA State Wiring Contest at the FFA/FCCLA Center in Covington. All 12 state contestants will be recognized at the Georgia FFA Convention Award Dinner, scheduled for April 23 at the Macon Centreplex. “Satilla is proud of Ty and all the students who participated in the wir-ing events,” says Justin Franks, Satilla REMC’s Wiring Event Coordinator. “These students, along with their advisers, spent many days and hours in preparation for the wiring events. The experience gives these students some exposure to the electrical indus-try and develops fundamental skills they can use later in life.” Jeff Davis County FFA Adviser Crandall Parlor speaks highly of Padgett and the CDE. “Ty has an out-standing work ethic,” Parlor says. “He had to work hard to learn everything he did in the short amount of time we had to prepare. He was second team all-region offensive line for the past two years, and he didn’t start preparing until football was over. He was dedicated to learning about  all the aspects of the electrical wiring contest. I feel this contest will help

J

prepare him for his future as he furthers his education in the electrical engineer-ing field.” Founded more than 40 years ago, the CDE encourages the safe, efficient use of electricity and is sponsored by the FFA and Georgia Electric Membership Corp. (GEMC). Each competitor must complete a real-life wiring problem that counts for 60 percent of the final score. The student must examine a wiring plan, procure materials and install an electrical circuit based on a mock wall.

Students also complete a 30-item written problem-solving activity for 30 percent of the total score. These multiple-choice questions relate to actual wiring practices, requirements of the National Electrical Code and/or knowledge of rural electrification and electric cooperatives. For the final 10 percent of the score, students are required to use effective communication skills in describing actual electrical wiring tasks.
