This is a time of self-reflection and self-denial as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter. Are we better today than we were last year? If not, why? Are we attempting to get closer to Christ in our daily lives? Lent is a good time to see where we can improve our relationship with Jesus. Many people will give up certain things. I would challenge you to add something positive that will help you grow spiritually as well, such as daily prayer or more time in adoration. Grand Knights Comments

HAPPY 136th BIRTHDAY KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS! (Tue. 29th)Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

MARCH 2019 CALENDAR EVENTS:

Please welcome our newest member to the Knights of Columbus!

Each ‘degree’ of the Knights of Columbus is associated with a particular virtue, the fourth being “Patriotism”. Consequently, the 4th Degree is often known as ‘The Patriotic Degree’. The Fourth Degree is frequently regarded as an honorary title with it’s regalia of tuxedos, capes, chapeaux and swords but should rather be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side.

Great news! Congratulations to Sir Knight Tom Yardely on his magnificent achievement in completing his Fourth Degree Exemplification in February. May this success you have achieved be the beginning of many more magnificent achievements in the Knights, vivat Jesus!

Cupid's arrow was a sure hit at the Knights of Columbus Valentine's Day dinner and dance and announcement of the Knight and Family of the Year 2018. Valentine's Day is the perfect time to treat your sweetheart to a first-class dining experience. The KofC did just that by adding some romance and celebrated an early Valentine’s Day with their wives, family and friends! Everyone enjoyed the romantic evening with great food, drinks and laughter. To top off the dinner and in recognition of outstanding excellence, superior performance, accomplishment and dedication Council #6413 Grand Knight Ramiro Ochoa proudly presented the “Knight of the Year” to Leo Farias. Also a certificate for the “Family of the Year” was presented to Dempsey “Butch” and Suzan Rowe in recognition for their distinguished honor and commitment to the Knights of Columbus Council #6413 Portland, Texas. Butch and Suzan are known for their involvement and commitment to the Knights and parish as well as to our community. Your brother Knights, family and friends congratulate you! Vivat Jesus!!

The red rose symbolizes many different meanings. In general it portrays beauty, passion, courage and respect. It says congratulations, I love you and shows a sincere love. It is viewed as a symbol of deep romantic love and desire. In Christianity, the red rose is a symbol of Jesus' blood and the suffering that he went through during His crucifixion. In lieu of our traditional Valentine’s Party at the Parish Hall, twenty-nine had a grand time and enjoyed fine cuisine at the Downtown Grill in Corpus Christi on Valentine’s Day. All the ladies received red roses. Our thanks to Brother Greg, although not able to make it, for making the arrangements.…. . DiVivat Jesus!!

To join the Knights of Columbus you have to be a man of 18 years of age as of your last birthday, and a Practical Catholic in communion with the Holy See.

What does it mean to be a "practical" Catholic in communion with the Holy See?Practical Catholic guidelines have been established to assist in judging the practical Catholicity of an applicant or member. The main components of this requirement may be described as follows:

The practical Catholic in union with the Holy See is one who, in general, regulates his life according to the teachings of Christ and the Church, and endeavors to observe the commandments of God and of the Church.

A practical Catholic strives to have a greater knowledge of the teachings of Christ and his Church's authority (vested in the Supreme Pontiff, the hierarchy and clearly united with him) to teach, govern and sanctify the faithful.

A practical Catholic gives material and moral support to the Church and her works on all levels, promoting the programs of the parish and diocese and comes to the aid of the missions, the needy, the underprivileged; espousing and advancing the just causes of minority groups; endeavoring to eliminate unjust discrimination, prejudice, etc.; supporting the Church in her defense of marriage and family life and in her crusades against divorce, abortion, pornography and all the evils of today.

If a practical Catholic marries outside the Church, that is, contrary to the laws of the Church, he ceases to be a practical Catholic and hence may not be a member of the Knights of Columbus. A man who, living in a valid marriage, obtains a civil divorce and remarries outside the Church ceases to be a practical Catholic and hence loses his right to join or continue in the Order of the Knights of Columbus. If his former marriage is declared null by the Church and he remarries validly according to the Church's laws, he may be reinstated into the Order.

A Catholic who is a member of a forbidden, secret society is not a practical Catholic and hence may not become or continue to be member of the Knights of Columbus.

Joining the Knights of Columbus can change your life. As a Knight, you have the opportunity to strengthen your parish, give back to your community, grow in your faith and gain exclusive access to our portfolio of top-quality insurance products to financially protect your family. Councils conduct many programs that support your parish and community. By joining your local council does not mean that you need to sacrifice quality time with your family.

If you’re interested in helping those in need in your parish and community, strengthening your parish and your familial relationships, growing in your faith, and gaining exclusive access to top-quality insurance protection for you and your family, then consider joining the Knights of Columbus.
