Unified Spotlight: Spread the Word to End the Word

Students from Farrington High School gathered at the HawaiiState Capitol on March 8, in honor of the national Spread theWord campaign. At the event over 40 students with andwithout disabilities waved signs to passing motorists andpedestrians while encouraging them to "live lokahi"--lokahimeans unity, agreement, and harmony. From the high schoolquarterback reminding his peers with special needs to wave,to the students cheering for inclusion, the spirit of love and lokahi was absolutely felt at the event.

Organized by students and staff from the Farrington High School Friends Program, the Spread the Word event was the culmination of the club's "Friends Week," which promoted respect and inclusion all week long. The school-wide event focused on different themes each day, including hosting lunch-time activities and special events for national Spread the Word to End the Word Day on March 6.

The national Spread the Word campaign was founded on an audacious belief, a simple observation, and an urgent goal to end the use of the "r-word" and believes in a world that would be better if all people--including those with intellectual disabilities--were valued, respected, embraced, and included in our communities.

Unified Flag FootballCongratulations to all of the Unified athletesand coaches who participated in this year's
