Ken Royal demonstrates how to saw the beginnings of a tenon for one of his end tables..

March Recap — Simple Joinery for End Tables With Ken Royal

Some of the tools Ken uses to create his tables.

Some of Ken’s Tips:

Wood selection is important. For one table, he used bookmarked wood as his 3/4 inch top.

Then determine the shape—mitered corners, curved corners or an oval. If you’re creating an oval, do the math: determine the length and width, determine the axes, and use a pencil to draw the ellipse.

You can use pocket screws to fasten the pieces, but Ken prefers mortise and tenon, as the screw version tends to weaken after the table takes two or three hits.

It’s best to use a dedicated mortise machine, but one can cut one’s own mortise and tenons, which he demonstrated in surprisingly few minutes.

Once completed, usually sand to 220 and use four to five coats of wiping finish such as Formby’s.

Google Fine Woodworking for mortise and tenon tips, including Tips for Stronger Tenons.
