Public Hearing
Thursday April 5th @ 7pm
Meet New & Current Colleagues Hi, my name is Rose B, and I have been a Clubhouse Colleague since April of 2014. I learned about Clubhouse while attending a NAMI Care Connection support group. I heard that Clubhouse is a place that empowers individuals with a mental illness, and offers many support services. I have worked a long time on recovery, and feel it is time to work on becoming competitively employed. Clubhouse was and is the place to start. After taking a Clubhouse tour, I was very impressed with the entire operation; how organized it is run, and how staff and colleagues work together to keep it running. There are varied areas of work (Culinary, Clerical, and Maintenance), giving everyone a chance to work at a level or pace they feel comfortable with. It is very helpful that the computer software is current, with staff and colleagues available to help you learn. Julie spent many hours to construct a professional resume for me and continues to assist with the job application process. Sharon, personally met with me, as she and Julie were concerned about my health. I was reassured that my journey is at my pace, and not anyone else’s. DVR services are available, and there are many different options for me to seek employment. If it doesn’t work for me, I know that Clubhouse is here for support, and will continue to help me on my journey. Everyone has been very friendly and respectful, and I appreciate the many times a staff member has taken the time to listen to my story. Not just listen to my story, but take an interest, and honestly care about my well-being. Clubhouse continues to improve the environment, by encouraging teamwork, being social, and keeping a positive attitude. It is a place that offers support in mind, body and soul. Thank you Clubhouse!
I am blessed beyond belief!

A New Beginning By, Ken K.
We have all endured Wisconsin win-ters. Cold temps, snow and dreary skies have kept us indoors most of the time, trying to stay warm and cozy. But relief is on the way. Soon flakes and ice and bitterness will give way to rain, green grass, flowers, and warmth. Things come alive in the springtime. Not only in nature, but we do too. There is a “new-ness” in the air, and it is palpable. Spring lifts the spirits and prepares us for the hot summer months ahead. Eagerness to enjoy outdoor activities like swim-ming, going to festivals, and barbecu-ing in the backyard fills our hearts and minds with anticipation. Spring can also be a time of renewal and rebirth. Having been indoors most of the chilly winter months may have left us depressed, inactive, and rest-less. Change is a big part of spring-time. Not only in the external world, but internally. We feel revived, reju-venated, ready for something new. A beginning. Is there something in your life you wish to change? Something that, like a winter coat, you wish to shed and leave behind? What does your heart and soul crave? Springtime is a perfect opportunity to address those questions. Perhaps life experi-ences have left you cold and hard-ened, like icicles hanging from a win-dowsill. A fresh perspective on what you want and who you wish to be-come can melt away any feelings of failure or low self-worth. A new you begins to bloom. You begin to see things as they truly are. All the pain and suffering all the self-doubt, all the negativity is washed away down-stream. The sun shines again. You feel the warmth. You begin to perk up. Your energy is renewed. You step out into a whole new world; a whole new you. Embrace yourself and em-brace this new season. This is a time of new beginnings. You have it in you to make a change!

St. Patrick’s Day Poem
St. Patrick's Day is here, you see. We'll pick some shamrocks, one,
two, three. We'll count the leaves and look
them over, Maybe find a four-leafed clover.
I'll sew green buttons on my vest,
Green for St. Patrick is the best. I'll wear a green hat, very high, And dance a jig--at least I'll try!

Fun Facts
There are 34 million Irish people in the USA, and only 4.5 million in Ireland. The chances of finding a four leaf clover is 1:10,000. The original color of St. Patrick’s Day was blue, but it changed to green in the 17th century.

As you may be aware, of we are beginning the process of becoming an Accredited Clubhouse with Clubhouse International. There are many steps in this process and we need many hands to complete the work required for accreditation. Our first step was to reach out to Grand Avenue Clubhouse (GAC) in Milwaukee. Our next steps in-clude doing a self-study, hosting a site visit, make corrections re-quired by Clubhouse International and then achieving Accreditation Status. At the same time we are working on accreditation we need to get two other very important components of clubhouse going as well. First we need to get transi-tional employment up and running, and finally we need to increase our membership and attendance num-bers. If we can work on this collab-oratively, we will be able to achieve these lofty goals! On January 31st, Josh, Julie, Lukas and Songra all spent the day at the GAC. Their feedback is how positive the environment at the clubhouse was. Their facility is a very large, beautiful old building in downtown Milwaukee, and all were impressed by the history the building holds. Like our club-house, they hold morning meetings and members sign up for the objec-tives for the day. They had three units. First was the Clerical/Administration. Here they worked on the daily operations of the club-house. They kept track of attend-ance, put together part of their dai-ly newsletter, among other things. In the Culinary Unit, they had a snack-shop where people could get coffee and had a room where peo-ple could congregate. They had many people in this department all working to make the morning and afternoon meals successful!
Finally there was the Employment/Education Unit. This is where they worked on employment and educa-tion goals for the members, they have a library where you are able to check out books, they also prepare articles and reports for the daily newsletter. On this floor they also had animals to care for. The one thing that was noticed was that peo-ple were anxious to help! They want-ed their clubhouse to succeed and they put all their energy to creating a positive environment where every-one wanted to help each other. We will be visiting this clubhouse more and will invite them to help us im-prove our clubhouse to achieve our goal of accreditation. If you are inter-ested in visiting GAC, please stop in or call the Clubhouse to find out when we are planning another outing there! When we were at the GAC, they gave us a copy of the self-study document. This document goes over, in great detail, each of the 37 club-house standards. We must answer how we are meeting the expectation of the standard and give examples. If we are not meeting them, how will we make the changes in order to meet the expectations? It is very im-portant to have as many members give input as possible. Each day we are reviewing with members in at-tendance on how we rate for our compliance with the standards, and the more input that we have, the bet-ter our report will be. So please, if you are available, come help us to identify where we are doing well, and more importantly where we need to improve and how we can make these improvements. After the self-study is complete, Clubhouse International will be sending out accreditors who will ana-lyze how we do things. This is a 3-4 day process and when they have completed it they provide us with a Findings Report. In this report it will spell out where our shortcomings are and what we need to improve, as well as, where we meet or excel in standards compliance. For those shortcomings, we need to make re-quired improvements. Once those improvements are implemented and verified, and TEs are running smoothly for about one year, we can achieve accreditation.
One big part of accreditation is having transitional employment (TE) for members. What is transi-tional employment, you might be asking? This is an employment sight where members can test the waters to see if they are ready for employment. We look for em-ployers to host the TEs. They pro-vide a job, we provide the training to our members to be successful in competitive employment. We also provide coverage for the job in case the employee is sick or unable to attend work on a given day. These TEs can last a few weeks and up to 9 months. They average a 6 month duration. After that the employee can look for another TE or can begin searching for completive employ-ment in their community. These TEs are designed to have mem-bers work out of and not become permanent employment. Howev-er, there are exceptions where the employer wants to hire a specific employee. We need members who are looking to enter or re-enter the workforce and would like to try TEs as well! Another important step to increase our member numbers and the dai-ly attendance numbers. We have got so much work to do with these lofty goals that we need members to help us achieve them. We have our public relations meetings in full swing and are working to get the word out about Clubhouse to doctors, churches, mental health facilities, and employers who would be willing to host TEs. We need to have this work done soon-er than later! This is your clubhouse, and WE NEED YOU! If you haven’t been in for some time, please come in and see all the improvements that we are working towards. It is only with your input and help that we will be able to achieve accredita-tion, restart our TEs and increase our numbers.
