St. John's Special Congregational Meeting March 11th, 10:00am - Nave
There is one item on the agenda as follows: Voting on Constitutional changes Voting on Constitutional changes Voting on Constitutional changes Voting on Constitutional changes to C12.01 and C13.01to C12.01 and C13.01to C12.01 and C13.01to C12.01 and C13.01
No other business will be conducted at the meeting.
Y|Üáà VÉÅÅâÇ|ÉÇ First communion can and does happen at many different ages throughout congregations of the ELCA. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s set of priorities for the practices of word and sacrament, The Use of the Means of Grace, notes that, "There is no command from our Lord regarding the age at which
people should be…first communed” (38B).
Although no particular age for first communion is prescribed by The Use of the Means of Grace, one guideline is offered. Because admission to the Sacrament is by invitation of the Lord to the baptized, "baptized children begin to commune on
a regular basis at a time determined through mutual conversation that includes the pastor, the child, and the
parents or sponsors involved, within the accepted practices of the congregation” (37 and 37C).
We will have a class on Saturday, March 10th from 10am—2pm. We ask that at least one parent is present as we will be discussing everyone’s baptism, understanding various Christian symbols and painting a chalice for each person who will be receiving their first communion. Please call the church office 864-583-8167 and let us know your interest in attending this faith growing event.
Peace, Pastor Mike

HISTORY IN ACTION or . . . A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!A Blast from the Past!
by Judy Lybrand, Archives
March 2018
A bulletin from March 9, 1997 (twenty-one years ago) featured a photograph of a stained-glass window depicting the
same image as one of our stained-glass windows (ours is depicted here)—an image that raises eyebrows and questions:
the serpent on a T-shaped cross. This is a reference to a story in Numbers 21 where Moses was instructed by God to
make an image of a poisonous serpent and set it on a pole, and those bitten by serpents should look at the image and
would live. Thus the image is, for us, a figure reminding us of Jesus who died on a cross; we who are bitten by sin can
look to him for life. As the bulletin says:
LOOKING TO THE CROSS Light streams through the window, bringing to life brilliant, shining
color. The patterns from the stained glass spill out into the sanctuary, dappling the floor and walls and even the people with the luster of green, red, blue. The church interior appears changed, even new. When we see the light, nothing ever looks the same again. Sometimes we can see things in the light we wish we had not. But Christ our light has come into the world to save, not to condemn. And so when we dare to look at painful things that have come to light, we find healing and restoration. In the desert, the wanderers poisoned by venom were healed by looking at an image of the serpent that had bitten them. In the wilderness of Lent, we who are afflicted by sin find restoration by looking to the cross. The cross is an image of the cruelty and destruction brought about by sin. It is a sign of all the sorrows and griefs which are part of our human condition. In the cross we face, rather than deny, evil and its consequences. We do not turn away from suffering; we acknowledge both the harm we inflict and the damage done to us. But that is not the end. We take heart in contemplating the love of God in Christ, who died and was raised for us. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Through the grace of God we venture toward and into the saving light. What we had feared to be a harsh, scrutinizing glare is a gentle glow in which the truth can be revealed. It is the light of Christ, shared with us at our baptism—hinted at by flickering candles, colorful windows, and the shining eyes of all who see.
Our current bulletin board features photos and explanations of the symbols in our stained glass windows. The information is also on
our website at www.stjohns-spartanburg.org/about-us/church-facilities/windows.html

Many migrant children, youth and families face the challenges of a complex immigration system, limited employment opportunities, and little support. Through ELCA World
Hunger and the ELCA’s AMMPARO (Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy,
Representation and Opportunities) strategy, our church provides food, clothing, and care to meet their immediate needs. 40 Days of Giving is a way for ELCA members to support this church’s hunger and poverty ministry during Lent. Our Lenten Offerings will be dedicated to helping this effort. Please make checks
payable to St. John's and designate on the memo line Lenten World Hunger.

If giving by law was a tithe, how much more should giving by grace be?
Are we giving God what is right, or what is left?
The question is not how much of my money I give to God, but rather how much of God's money I keep for myself.
Give not from the top of your purse, but from the bottom of your heart.
THANKS, MR. SPRANG!

YOUNG FAMILIES! Thanks to those who attended the YF lunch and cookie decorating event. We were able to make beautiful cookies to give to teachers, school employees and district office employees. A special thanks to Tina Nichols for lunch and to Joann Hoffmeyer for making the cookies and helping us decorate!
For March, we are not having the Saturday Egg Hunt, but instead doing this during Sunday school hour on Easter Sunday, April 1st!
Also in March, we plan to attend a St Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival in Greenville on March 11. This event is free! Event starts at 1:30-6pm with the parade at 2 pm. Meet at Noma Square in downtown Greenville.
In April we also plan to have a day for volunteering at the Humane Society in Spartanburg (Date to be determined.) Come and see all you can do to help our furry friends!
In May we plan to have a swim and Cinco de Mayo party for the end of the school year! Fun craft planned for the summer for kids and their families to keep in touch. More info to come. For any questions please call or Beth Cutshall 864-993-9429
Easter Egg Hunt Change of Plans! St. John's Christian Education and Young
Families group understand that many members, family and friends are accustomed to St. John's
Easter Egg Hunt Celebration occurring the Saturday before Easter. For multiple reasons, the
decision has been made to not do a Saturday event this year. HOWEVER, we will still host an Easter
Egg Hunt as well as an educational Easter drama by our LCY for children ages preschool-5th
grade ON Easter Sunday at 10am in the children’s wing! This will be a memorable and an extra fun
time for all kids on this day! So parents and grandparents, bring your children on April 1 and enjoy
an Easter Breakfast just for you during that time. There is no better day to celebrate than on the
very day our Savior is Risen! As always…Our doors are open to visitors EVERY Sunday!
