Columbia Pacifi c Chapter 54

After a short break, trying to balance life, a teenager, exercise, newsletter and the presidency (not to mention work) I wasn’t able to get a February newsletter out the door, I barely issued January at the beginning of February. So, for now, we may only see the newsletter every other month. I don’t typically have that much to say anyway.

Our February joint program meeting with CSI, ASHRAE & AACE was packed full of wonderful people and was real exciting. As it turns out a lot of people wear black socks but but not a lot of orange shirts, you would understand if you were there. The scavenger hunt was a great way to get people talking and a lot of fun and we had lots of awesome prizes donated for the 50/50 ASPE scholarship raffl e. The donors were, in alphabetical order, Cherry City Electric, Ferguson, HydroTemp Mechanical, Johnson Barrow, SunSteel, and Mesher Supply. Thank you all for contributing to the success of the program meeting and our scholarship raffl e.

Our next meeting will be on the preparedness for the impending earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction zone. Is Portland ready? This will be a panel discussion with industry leaders and experts. See fl ier in this issue and get signed up. Hope to see you all there.

The next certifi cation cycle will begin July 2017 so start thinking about signing up and getting your estimating skills certifi ed. Join people like myself and become a CPE (Certifi ed Professional Estimator), by signing up on our national website:www.aspenationalorg/?page=CertProgram

ASPE promotes Education, Ethics, Standards and Fellowship, which all lead to Professionalism. Strive for excellence. See you soon.

FeaturingA panel of speakers from the Port of Portland, Multnomah County, Beaverton School District and other areas of essential services. What is expected to be the fallout if and when the Portland area is struck by a large seismic event? Learn how local

planners are preparing and how this might impact construction in the near future.

Call for Ethics

COLUMBIA PACIFIC • CHAPTER 54

Call For Ethics Topic Submittals It's that time, again when we estimators play that ultimate Reality Show:

"A Question of Ethics" Meeting Date: May 16, 2017

The Ethics Meister (aka Curt Kolar, CPE) needs your war stories and observations for timely and reality-based examples to spotlight for an evening. No subject is irrelevant, and the more controversial, the better! If you are shy about your writing abilities, a trained wordsmith is available. Just provide Curt with the facts. To ensure confidentiality and protect you from repercussions we can create names to protect the innocent and not piss off the guilty! Only the Ethics Meister will ever know. Cattle Call for Ethics Scenario Performers Whether or not you submit a topic for discussion, rather than hear just the Ethics Meister’s droning voice, this is one way to make the scenario come alive, with Bob Newhart-Style on-the-telephone dialog performances. ******************************************************************** Send your topic entries – and your volunteering to act notice to: Curt Kolar, Ethics Meister at [email protected] Send as many entries as you wish. The more you submit the better your chances of winning.

Topics Entry Deadline is, Friday April 7th Hurry! Don't delay! E-mail your Ethics Topic today! ******************************************************************* Sample Submittal

THE BLANK CHECK BID – scenario On a competitively bid Lump Sum project, you (GC Project Manager) get a phone call from Clyde’s Specialty Contracting, a subcontractor you have used before, and who does pretty good work. Clyde offers to undercut the lowest competing sub bid by $500.00 to get the work. QUESTIONS

1. Should you take the offer? Why or why not?

2. Ethics aside, is this legal? Why or why not?

3. What do you tell Clyde?

4. Will you invite Clyde to bid again? Why or why not?
