A Note From the Principal Wow! Can you believe that spring break is almost here! We had a very productive last couple of months filled with a variety of activities. It is great to see the longer daylight hours that this time of the year brings to us. Angus McKay Community Schools Association has two exciting fundraising plans in the works for April. The first is the Glenlea Greenhouses plant sale and the second is a Mall Night (April 6). We hope that you support both of these ventures. Thank you to all of our Angus McKay families for their continued support of school and CSA initiatives. Thank you for helping me create a safer environment for your children by parking safely around the school. I have seen a tremendous improvement since I sent the letter out in February. The patrols also report to me that they feel safer on their posts. There are a couple of dates for your calendar that I would like you to be aware of. Kindergarten registration has begun and the K orientation will take place on June 14 th at 1:00pm. The grade five farewell will be on June 27 th at 9:30 and the volunteer tea will be on May 30 th at 2:30. Take time to browse through the newsletter. You will be amazed at all the exciting learning activities going on at the school. Some of these activities were the grade 4 and 5 fieldtrip to see the Chamber Orchestra with the Frontier Fiddlers, a whole school WSO concert, and the most exciting field trip was the whole school trip to Fort Whyte Alive. This was such an amazing day! I can still here the joyful screams coming down the toboggan slide! Make sure to take some time to look at the pictures we have around the school. We have said farewell to Mrs. Elke Daraska who was teaching grade 5 since Christmas and to Mrs. Wendy Derksen who was teaching grade 2 since September. We wish them all the best. Welcome back to Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Laurin-Clark. It is nice to have them back! Thank you for your support in helping to make Angus McKay School a great place to be! February is I Love to Read Month! This February at Angus McKay, we have loved reading the works of William Joyce! He has written and illustrated over fifty children's books including George Shrinks, Santa Calls, Dinosaur Bob and his Adventures with the Family Lazardo, Rolie Polie Olie, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs and A Day with Wilbur Robinson, The Mischievians and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. William Joyce won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film with Brandon Oldenburg. He has re-ceived three Emmys for Rolie Polie Olie, an animated series based on his series of children's books that airs on the Disney Junior Channel. Check out some of his short videos from Moonbot Studios online! Inspired by the book The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, we found out we love words as much as Mr. Morris Lessmore! Our provocation board, which listed words we love, has blossomed into an amazing collection of interesting and juicy words. Way to go Nessies! We also had student library leaders as guest readers this month! Some grade 5 students visited classrooms reading and sharing the books of William Joyce. Students also enjoyed creating their own Mischievian and entered for a draw to win a prize for the most creative Mischievian. Not to be outdone, students had the op-portunity to have their photo taken with Billy’s Booger (you really have to read the book to fully understand J). It has been a fabulous month of reading, viewing, and enjoying the works of William Joyce!

Fort Whyte Fun and Games By Aaron L., Ava-Lynn, and Sara Have you ever wondered how fun Aboriginal games are? How much time have you spent outdoors lately? If you were lucky enough to go to Angus McKay School, you got to experience the beauty of nature and the joy of Aboriginal games! Our whole school, that’s right, the WHOLE school, went to Fort Whyte Alive on Friday February 24, 2017. We left bright and early on buses and arrived on a crisp, cool, winter morning. Then the excitement be-gan! We split into different groups, and started the best field trip of our life! Some very interesting and super fun Aboriginal games we played were:

The Seal Crawl – we had to crawl across the ice on a pond pretending we were seals to escape the “polar bears” (which were really the adults). Just like the Inuit play this game to develop skills, we focused on building upper body strength and also being able to move quickly in case you were on the ice in the Arctic and it was breaking so you could have a quick escape.

Tug of War – This voyageur game was played to build strength, friendship, and team work. It’s also very fun.

The Blanket Toss – we played this Aboriginal game to build core strength, and upper body strength. When you pull altogether, the person in the middle of the blanket gets tossed into the air. You have to work together so nobody gets hurt. Believe us when we tell you, people get some serious air!

Trading with the Chief – we had to trade goods from Europe with the Chief to get furs and animal skins to take back to the companies we worked for (like Hudson Bay Company or the Northwest Company). The Chief was a great negotiator, and we learned lots of skills to trade with him.

Sled Races – we had to take turns pulling and being pulled on a sled in a race to beat the other team. As practice voyageurs, we had to move quickly to make sure we won, but also to build teamwork, strength, and strategy.

Scavenger Hunts – we played a scavenger hunt to work on our hand eye coordination and paying at-tention to details.

An amazing experience was snowshoeing! It was like wearing giant tennis rackets on your feet and walk-ing! Sounds easy, but really isn’t. It took a lot to get used to, but we did it. And we only fell a few times….like 8 or 10! It ‘s sort of like skating and the snow was hard packed and a little icy at times. It was a remarkable adventure through the beautiful nature trails. We saw a lot of deer poop, lovely birds, and lots of rabbits and squirrels. Then we went tobogganing! We followed the rules, and screaming is compulsory, so we had to do it! The toboggan run was super high, really fast, and before you knew it, you were at the bottom onto the lake! And yes, we screamed all the way down. The downside…we had to climb all the steps to go again. Not to worry, we were up to the challenge! What would be a great way to end such a fun-filled, outdoor experience? Roasting marshmallows over an open fire and popping them into your mouth where the melted, sticky goodness filled you with joy! The charcoal ones, not as delicious, but still a special treat. Some of our friends got to make maple syr-up taffy just like the voyageurs of old! They poured hot maple syrup onto the snow. Then you push your stick into the quickly cooling syrup, and roll it! You have to push hard, or it doesn’t stick. It was super sticky (watch out if you had a loose tooth)! But, it was so scrumptious and delightful for your tastebuds! Eating the sugar taffy in the sod house was truly a unique experience.

Before we knew it, our day was done, and we had to board our buses to go home. Some people fell asleep on the ride back. Maybe all the fresh air and exercise made them sleepy. We highly recommend going to Fort Whyte Alive! It was the best field trip of our life!

Kindergarten February in Kindergarten held many fun events!! We celebrated 100 days of school with a ton of activities, which included counting 100 stickers and making hats, bingo dabbing a 100 bubble gum machine, taking 100 steps around the school, making a 100 day fruit loop necklace and building a tower with 100 cups! We also created our very own ice skating rink, complete with a popcorn making machine, hockey games, snowman building, a fire pit to warm up in and a snack shop. The students have been writing many poems and stories all about winter

. They have also been studying a colour unit in IBL. They have read many stories, done some very fun experiments with colours, wrote their own colour poems and mixed and named their very own colours! We had our first full day experience and joined the school on our whole school Fort Whyte field trip. They learned to snow shoe, roasted marshmallows, played some outdoor games and went sledding. It was an extremely fun and ex-hausting day for them!

Grade 1

The Wonderful Ones have been busy ‘plowing through’ some extremely interesting units! We just completed making toys for our design process pro-ject to complete our senses unit. They turned out fabulous! Sharing them with our friends in other classes was so much fun! We will share them with you at conference time. We are currently in the process of constructing a map of our community! We didn’t realize that there were so many interest-ing places and so many fun things to do so close to our homes! This humongous map that will hang on the wall in our hallway. It certainly gives us a great perspective of the tremendous community that we live in! We are also writing real estate fly-ers that list the highlights of our community to let others know what a fabulous community we live in! We are continue to work on problem solving and learning our math strategies to solve basic addition and subtraction questions. A reminder to keep talking about and practicing those strategies at home!

Grade 2 News

We have been having a lot of winter fun in grade 2! The student’s snowflake writing was outstanding. They put amazing details into their descriptions – so proud of them. They also made beautiful paper snowflakes that helped us get through this season. In our science unit, we have been studying solids, liquids and air. The students have enjoyed the many experiments with the three states of matter. From making crystals to pushing ping pong balls with air, it has been quite entertaining! We also went on a fieldtrip to the Science Gallery where we took part in some educational demonstrations. Our 100 Day celebration was an exciting day – how fast the time goes!

Grade 3

Our grade 3 class is enjoying learning about Forces that Attract and Repel during science. We always start with a question to explore and realize that as we start exploring the “why” or “how” that more questions come up! We have designed a toy for a young child and started building them! The students look for-ward to sharing them during student led conferences. Japan has been our focus during Social Studies and English Language Arts. We are learning about their land, resources, culture, technology, and daily life. The students are learning how to use features from non-fiction books to help study Japan and how to put their new learning into their own words. The grade 3s are also writing Japan’s traditional form of poetry: Hai-ku. During Math, the students have been listening to story problems to show their understanding of multiplication and division as well as writing their own story problems. We are also learning about nonstandard measurement. The students are learning how and why we need to measure. We continue to use different strate-gies to help us add and subtract larger numbers.

News From Grade 4

Math: Our focus in math has been adding and subtracting numbers with and without regrouping. To learn how to regroup we worked on the iPads and with bingo chips. The students love any chance they get to use the iPads. We have also been using the iPads for our problem solving. We record our process and share our solutions with the class. The students love playing multiplying math games, which is helping us master our facts!

English: In English, we finally finished our “I got trapped in a snow globe” writing piece, which the students are excited to share with you at Student Led Conferences. Recently, we started a novel study on the book called “Wonder.” We have been making predictions about the story and cannot wait to dive into this fabulous book!

Social Studies: In Social Studies, we have been looking at symbols and monuments in Canada. The students have worked so hard to create a large map of Canada that repre-sents all of the symbols.

Science: We have been learning all about Light and Sounds in our Science class. We have learned about the properties of Light and Sound and have done many experiments to test these properties. We are looking for-ward to presenting our homemade instru-ments!

We have been very busy in room 17! I look forward to seeing you all at Student Led Conferences. Ms. Maxwell
