The Grade 2 classes have been busy little leprechauns all year. We have learned about magnets,

adding two digit numbers to two digit numbers, Meteghan, Nova Scotia and words that end in

“le”. We will enjoy our skating adventures in March and our visits from Lana from CCT.

As we begin our Lenten journey, we look forward to the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.

Thank you to our Parent Council for the delicious pancake lunch on Shrove Tuesday. We will take

this time through Lent to think about what Jesus did for us and how we can share His love and

message with others.

Jesus came to earth,

To show us how to live,

How to put others first,

How to love and how to give.

Our Lord died on Good Friday,

But the cross did not destroy

His resurrection on Easter morn

That fills our hearts with joy.

So we live our lives for Jesus,

Think of Him in all we do.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students will be sent

home on Friday, March 24th.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on

Wednesday, March 29h from 4:00-7:30 pm.

Instead of the traditional one on one parent teacher interview,

our teachers are moving to student-led conferences. In this

method, your child comes with you to the interview in a celebration

of learning. It is the student that takes the lead on sharing exam-

ples of their work, discussing next steps and setting goals. Stu-

dent-led conferences create a partnership between the teacher,

student and parents to act as a support network or as stakehold-

ers in the success of the student.

We ask that parents once again please book appointments using

the on-line scheduler on our website to set a time for these meet-

ings. See instructions on how to book this appointment below. The

on-line scheduler will be open to book conferences/interviews be-

ginning March 6.

FOOD DRIVE

Total weight of the February food drive was 1679.8 lbs

which has a dollar value of $6719.20!!

+ $337.75 cash donations = $7056.95!

Rotary Music Festival

On Monday March, 6th our Junior and Senior

Choirs will be performing at this year's festival.

It is held at the Eresman Theatre, Medicine Hat

College.

Junior Choir performs at 9:30 am and Senior Choir

performs at 10:00 am.

Food Drive: is being well received by the entire school. Thank you to everyone who

has brought in items.

School Sponsored Mass: The mass was well attended, this year we had the most

number of families volunteering to participate in the mass.

-Thank you to Amy for the great job on organizing the luncheon afterwards.

Valentines Dance: Friday February 10, $2 / person or $5 / family. Admissions to the

dance will be donated to the food bank.

-There will be a 50/50 draw as well as a raffle for a valentine’s basket.

Breakfast Program: We are asking for volunteers for the breakfast program. If you are

able to help out please contact the parent council.

Winter Family Fun Night: We will have an update to this at the meeting in March.

Will inquire with Redcliff Arena to see if they have ice times available, also checking with the

City of Medicine Hat in regards to renting the cook house at Kin Coulee.

New Business:

Shrove Tuesday: Will take place on Tuesday February 28th. McElgunn’s Catering will

be catering the event (Pancakes and sausage or bacon). We are looking for volunteers to help

setup.

-Students are asked to bring a $2 donation for that day.

Snack Day: Next snack day will be on Friday March 24, Grade 6 class would like to

help with another snack/hot lunch.

Hot Lunch: Next hot lunch day will be on Friday March 10.

Paint Night: (Mommy and Me): We will re-visit this at the next meeting. Melanie has

been in contact with the Art Instructor at St. Mary’s school.

Kernels Fundraiser: Will have update on this at March meeting, Amy will enquire to

Kernels Popcorn as to the cost and what the school will receive from the sales.

Parent Association Report: Nothing to report at this time.

Teacher Report: -Mrs. Graf would like to have 10 students attend the Horizon Re-treat. The

cost would be $25/student, plus the cost of a sub approx. $200 and transportation approx. $70.

-Melanie to motion up to $600 at allow Mrs. Graf to attend the retreat with 10 students

from student council (Grade 5 & 6)

Principal Report: Mrs. Bodnaruk was very thankful to all the volunteers for the School

Sponsored Mass.

-School open house is going on right now; we have had a great response to the open

house with lots of new families coming through to checkout our school.

-Touched base on the numeracy and literacy program at the school. We are lucky enough

that Mrs. Helmer will be helping out with the program as there be a practicum student helping

out in her class.

Budget Meeting:

-Smoothie Bacon Dog Snack Day brought in $875.50 (revenue), the cost of the snack

day was $764.19 (expense).

-Hot Dog day brought in $496.50 (revenue), the cost of the hot lunch day was $219.15

(expense).

-Total amount spent on snacks for the School sponsored mass was $159.61.

-Motion carried for Mrs. Grad for up to $600 for Horizon Re-treat.

Community Coming Together

GoZen! was created to help children understand worry and alleviate anxie-ty. GoZen! provides a set of fundamental coping and resilience skills for children. This program will be taught in various class-rooms throughout the di-vision. For questions please checkout our web-site or email us.

GoZen! CanStruction Medicine Hat

A local committee has partnered with the Medicine Hat & District Food Bank to bring CanStruction to Medicine Hat. The competition features structures built out of food cans to create an image or object. CCT will be working with students from the schools to create an image to represent our school district community. We will have sponsorship for much of the cost but it would be great to be able to contribute to the cause. All cans will be donated to the Food Bank at the end of the competition. If anyone would like to donate money to our drive please contact us or have your student talk to their CCT Wellness Facilitator. Classroom Happenings

On Valentine’s Day at St. Thomas we read The Invisible String by Patrice Karst with all of the classrooms. We then used red yarn to create a compliments web, by passing the yarn through our circle and complimenting the person we passed to. After our web was complete we tried to keep a beach ball off the ground using our web. Our activity debrief related it to the spirit or mood in our classroom and how if we are friendly and compli-ment those around us, and include everyone then our classrooms are happier and everyone has a safe space for learning. The message translates to our homes and other places where we gather.

Child & Parent Group Services Information: February 2017

Kids in Control: This is a 6-session program for children who could benefit from anger management, self-control, & emotional expression training. Anger can be a confusing & overwhelming emotion to feel & respond to. Physical symptoms which accompany anger often include trembling, increased perspiration & heightened blood pressure & heart rate. This is one reason why children often associate anger with loss of control. But anger is a useful emotion which can be managed & directed, given the right skills & coping strategies. Through art, games & activities, children in the group will learn self-calming methods & other constructive ways to express their feelings without using aggression. Children will have the opportunity to enhance their social skills, feelings of competency, & personal effectiveness in the area of anger control while reducing self-defeating behaviors. There

is a corresponding Parent Support Group; attendance of at least one parent or guardian per child is required. Pre-registration is necessary; call one of the phone numbers above.

Kids in Between: This is a 6-session program for children aged 6 & 7 years, who are experiencing parental separation or divorce. Children who have been affected by parental separation & divorce are often struggling with a variety of unfamiliar & uncomfortable feelings. They will sometimes feel that they are the only ones experiencing these feelings & that no one will be able to understand them. Through art, games & activities, children have the opportunity to express their feelings & have them validated. They will also learn positive coping strategies to assist them in grieving the loss of their nuclear family & in dealing with divided loyalties. There is a corresponding Parent Support Group; attendance of at least one parent or guardian per child is required. Pre-registration is necessary; call one of the phone numbers above.

Bravehearts - Stimulating Independence, Building Confidence & Developing Coping Skills: This is a 6-session skill building group for children ages 3-5 years. Through art, games & stories, children have opportunities to examine how they express their feelings & to develop coping skills which will aid in expressing feelings. This group also focuses on stimulating independence in children & increasing their confidence. Parents learn how to support their children’s growing independence & support the use of coping strategies they learn during group sessions. There is a corresponding Parent Support Group; attendance of at least one parent or guardian per child is required. Pre-registration is necessary; call one of the phone numbers above.

NEXT GROUP – (Medicine Hat) begins March 15

Join us for this free information session. We all know that good sleep habits are important for children. But parents’ busy schedules, children’s evening activities & difficulties getting children to fall asleep & stay in bed at night can have a big impact on how much & how well children are sleeping. Research shows lack of sleep can negatively affect a child's temperament, behavior, ability to learn &more. This presentation will cover topics such as: How much sleep children really need Causes of some common sleep issues How to get children to fall asleep Getting children to stay in their own beds at night The Sleep Seminar is a 1 ½ hour presentation, held monthly at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. It is also available at the Brooks Health Center (& other locations upon request) via videoconferencing. Caution: The suggestions & recommendations provided in this seminar are NOT for parents/guardians of children who are not functioning at a developmental level of 18 months of age or older, or have any illnesses or disorders that may require 24-hour care and one-to-one attention of an adult. For help with sleep issues involving these children, contact your Public Health Nurse or Physician.

S A I N T T E R E S A D E D I C A T I O N –The Board authorized a local artist to create and install a sculpture at Mother Teresa School in dedication of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Thank you to a local artist who will donate their time to create the sculpture. A celebration will be held to unveil the sculpture once complete.

M O N S I G N O R M C C O Y M O D E R N I Z A T I O N – The modernization project is behind schedule an estimated 6 weeks. Demolition of the existing weight room and change rooms facilitating the transformation of the small gymnasium into the new Central Gathering Space, Auxillary Gymnasium and Exercise Facility are being scheduled in order to prevent disruption of school operations.
