W OW! I almost forgot.
This is leap year and
I have this great leap day
cover. Although probably
more appropriate for my
February message, we can
leap back, too.
George Cook, my good
philatelicfriend and former president of the
Badger Stamp Club (Madison), sent me this
cover. It is postmarked February 29, 2012.
What’s special about this leap day cover
is the franking. Note how the stamp
denominations reflect the date:
• 2¢ John Adams from the 1938
Presidential series
• 2¢ 1943 Allied Nations issue
• 9¢ Dome of Capitol from the 1975-81
Americana issue
• 20¢ George C. Marshall from the 1965-81
Prominent Americans issue
• 12¢ Henry Ford and 1909 Model T, also
from the Prominent Americans issue
The topper is that the franking adds up
to exactly 45¢, the one-ounce first-class rate
for February 2012. We have a similar
opportunity in 2016. Looking to 2020 and
beyond, however, what are the chances of
being able to do this again?
You have to admit the cover franking is
a clever idea. It may not be worth much but
it is in my “treasure” album (to be assembled
one of these days…).
Note: If our WFSC Secretary Ken Grant
([email protected]) has your email
address in our new email blast system,
or if you checked our Facebook page,
you received a heads-up on this in time
to make your own leap day cover.
Now, leaping back to the end of January,
the WFSC Executive Board expressed
a huge sigh of relief as Ray Perry stepped
up to take on the position of ATFP editor.
As I write, he and Interim Editor Aimée
Devine are working on the transition.
Needless to say, we are very excited and
thankful about having Ray aboard.

“Wisconsin Federation of Stamp Clubs”
A Philatelic Leap
And, need I remind you
that this extra day in 2016
could be used to write an article
for ATFP. Take the leap!
Wisconsin Philatelists in the News
W isconsin has been well
represented in the philatelic
press lately. The January The American
Philatelist featured Lawrence I. Gottlieb
in “How I Became a Stamp Collector.”
Larry lives in Madison and is a member
of the Badger Stamp Club. The February
issue of the same publication contained
several mentions of Wisconsin:
• Ken Martin, in his “Philatelic Happen-
ings” column, congratulated the North
Shore Philatelic Society of Milwaukee
on reaching their 50th year in 2016
as APS members.
• Cheryl Ganz has been selected by
the Collectors Club of New York as
the recipient of the 2016 Alfred F.
Liechtenstein Memorial Award.
• Alex Gill, a member of the Kettle
Moraine Coin & Stamp Club, is
acknowledged for his counsel on topics
related to the Alex Haimann article
“Postmarked February 29.”
A recent issue of Linn’s Stamp News
mentioned Mary Yahr as having an entry
in John Hotchner’s cartoon contest.
Way to go
Wisconsin!!!

Gordon Lindner
G ordon (Gordy) W. Lindner passed
away on October 22, 2015, at the age
of 77. Gordy is survived by his wife of almost
60 years, Nancy, their daughter Laurie, son
Jeff, and granddaughter, Carly. Gordy worked
as a master upholsterer for 50 years at Green
Bay Upholstery.
This is basically what the Green Bay Press
Gazette had for Gordy’s obituary. We in the
Green Bay Philatelic Society want to add a
little more about the Gordy Lindner we knew.
Gordy was an active member in the club for
many years until he sold his collections. He
served as the club’s vice-president on more
than one occasion, was the show chairman
for longer than any of us care to remember,
and was awarded life membership several
years ago. He was also a part-time dealer.
Gordy had various collecting interests over
the years which included Monaco, gold foils
(the ones that were really gold), British Com-
monwealth definitives, and United Nations.
Gordy really enjoyed foreign stamps and took
a great interest in them. He was an old-
fashioned salesman. As one club member put
it – “he reminded me of an Armenian rug
dealer: he could sell gravel to a rock.” That
member commented that he had a U.N. collec-
tion, an Israel collection, and a Princess Di
collection in his possession to prove his point.
As a matter of fact, I have a foreign accumula-
tion incorporated into my collection, too.
Another member commented on Gordy’s
love of people and the wealth of stories he had
at his disposal. I think the words used to
describe him was “he was a great raconteur.”
I second that comment as I remember Gordy
telling stories en route to stamp shows, at the
shows, on the way home, at club meetings, or
whenever you ran into him. He knew so many
people in the philatelic community and had
experiences with most of them that became
topics or subjects of his wealth of stories.
For my own self, I remember time spent
with Gordy learning how to be a show chair.
I’d go over to his house and we would talk
about items of philatelic interest and solve
the problems of the world. Eventually we
got around to planning the next show and
my training. It was a great time.
Gordy, you were a friend, stamp dealer,
philatelist, collector, club member, and a fun
and interesting person. You will be missed
in the philatelic community.
