In the 1980’s they found themselves needing new cars that they didn’t have the budget for. The railroad utilized the Per Diem program to add modern, safe, freight cars to their system. These 65’ 100-ton log cars are painted red with white and black lettering and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. This 33’ panel side twin bay hopper is painted black with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Pennsylva-nia railroad was known for fleets of coal hoppers, but unique among them was the singular two bay GLf 250,000 expanded bay hopper. New sides were applied to a standard hopper that allowed for an additional 15% capacity but the conversion never caught on with the railroad who favored higher capacity three and four bay hoppers.

These 89’ TOFC flat cars are painted red with black lettering and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1997 by Bethlehem Steel Car Co., these Class DT-91 cars were two of a fleet of 300. As of 1991, 291 cars were reported still in service according to the Official Railway Equipment Register.

Navajo TrailersRoad Numbers 1003/1070

These 45’ trailers are painted aluminum with red lettering. Navajo Freight Lines, formally the Boulder Dam Freight Lines, began service during the 1940’s and its brightly-colored distinctive logo can be found all over the Western US. These modern, lightweight trailers carried a wide variety of freight from building materials to industrial equipment to perishables over short and long distances.

The Helena Southwestern was a short line that operated in Arkansas and routinely interchanged with Missouri Pacific. In the 1980’s they found themselves needing new cars that they didn’t have the budget for. The railroad utilized the Per Diem program to add modern, safe freight cars to their system.

These 60’ bulkhead flat cars are painted yellow with black and white logo, black lettering and white reflectors. Built in 2001 by Gunderson as part of series 804000-804699, they run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. They were built a minimum of three feet in height and flat floor for general commodity loading.

These 50’ Standard box cars with plug door are painted yellow with aluminum roof and black ends. Built in 1940 at U.P.’s Omaha shop as part of series 499000-499299, they run on Bettendorf trucks. Used to ship shorter distances than mechanical reefers, these cars featured single plug doors to help seal in pre-cooled merchandise.

The Napa Valley Wine Train located in northern California is operated by the Napa Valley Railroad which is a pri-vately owned excursion train that runs 36-miles round trip between Napa and St. Helena. The wine train has been in operation since 1989 and now has 4 engines and 10 heavyweight passenger cars. The majority of the cars used by the train were originally built in 1915 by Pullman Standard for Northern Pa-cific Railway. The train has a capacity of 370 passengers and has carried over two million passengers since 1989!

Our N scale Napa Valley Wine Train Set will consist of one powered FT locomo-tive, two heavyweight diner cars, one kitchen car and a lounge car.
