Stewardship of the Good News

There have been many times in my life

when words just don’t come; when the

sorrow, the anger, and the pain as well as

the joy, are so overwhelming that words

have failed me. And in those moments, the

Psalms have become my voice and my

prayer.

The Psalms are beautiful poetry. They’re

filled with the full scope of human

emotion, coming out of life situations of

abandonment, fear, sorrow, and

questioning. Don’t know about you, but

that sounds like my daily life. So from these

pages leap out words that become my own

prayers…

- Create in me a clean heart O God. (51)

- O Lord, the God of my salvation, I have

cried out by day and in the night before

you. Let my prayer come before you; incline

your ear to my cry! (88)

- I will lift my eyes to the mountains, from

where shall my help come? My help comes

from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

(121)

But from those same pages come words of

promise and comfort, words that renew me

and refresh me… - God is our refuge and

strength, a very present help in trouble. (46)

- For as high as the heavens are above the

heart, so great is his loving kindness to

those who fear [revere] him (103)

- My soul waits in silence for God only,

from him is my salvation. He only is my

rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I

shall not be greatly shaken. (62)

And when all is well, these pages offer

eloquent words when my simple “thank

you” doesn’t seem to fit the joy I feel…

- Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is

within me, bless his holy name! (103)

- O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord, let

us shout joyfully to the rock of our salva-

tion! (95)

I encourage you to join me in reading these

prayers and songs this Lent, to discover

anew the richness of God’s word and how it

can speak directly to our lives. And, I would

love to hear your favorites!

God be gracious to us and bless us, and

cause his face to shine upon us! (67!)

Peace,

~Pr. Matthew
