Purim - “The Megillah According to Rock ‘n Roll”
This year’s Purimshpiel is built around
some of the greatest hits of the 1950s: Oh,
I wonder wonder wonder wonder who?
“Who Wrote the Book of Ess(ter)?”
Come meet King Ahasuelvis and the rest
of the gang, and celebrate the holiday
with lots of joy. Groggers,
hamentaschen, costumes, the smashing
of the Hameñata...in other words, the
whole megillah! (See what we did
there?). Wednesday, March 4, at 6:15
pm in the Krupp Chapel.
Believe it or not, Passover is right around the corner! Erev Pesach (the “first night”) is Friday, April 3. We will have an abbreviated Family Shabbat Service from 5:30 to 6:00 pm that evening, so that everyone can go home and participate in Seder. Saturday, April 4, we will have our annual Community Passover Seder at Temple at 6 pm. Watch your mail, email and bulletins for more details as the time draws nearer.

Focus on Sacred Aging—Wednesday, March 11 at 4:15 pm
Caring for loved ones (whether aging parents, partners and spouses afflicted with
dementia, or others in need of care) can create stress in our lives. In these monthly
sessions we share stories, suggestions on how to cope, sometimes laughter and
sometimes tears. Together in community we care, support, and help each other.
Each session stands on its own. Contact Rabbi Bellush with any questions. The
meetings are held in the Zork Library at Temple.

WRJ/Sisterhood
Our February Temple Mount Sinai Sisterhood meeting was very productive, and everyone seemed to have
a great time socializing with new members and women who are dedicated to our organization. Wine,
cheese, delicious desserts, and chocolates made this a special event. Thank you to all who participated.
Ladies, we will be having a “Baubles, Books, and Bags Trade & Tea” on Sunday afternoon, March 15 at 3
p.m. in Zelonka Hall at Temple. Start collecting books (best sellers or coffee table hardbacks),
baubles (any costume jewelry), and bags (purses, cosmetic bags, wallets, and totes).
All items must be clean and in good condition. For each item brought,
you will get a ticket and can shop for new possessions brought by
other people. Our limit is fifteen items per person to trade. For an
extra ticket, bring cookies or other treats to share. Unique or
expensive items that are brought may be put in a drawing. No
money will be exchanged at this event. Please contact Louise
Rice at 915-833-8496 or [email protected] for more information
and to RSVP. Get rid of the old and collect new treasures!
Sisterhood will be participating on Sunday, April 26th in the Yom
Ha Atzma’ut community celebration at Congregation B’nai Zion.

From the Rabbi’s Study From the Rabbi’s Study
Mishenichnas Adar, marbim besimchah. “When
the month of Adar arrives, joy
increases” (Talmud, Ta’anit 29a).
Adar, the last month on the Jewish calendar,
arrived a few days ago, and as we go to press,
the holiday of Purim is just around the corner.
The joyful celebration of the holiday --
megillah reading, a Purimshpiel,
hamentaschen, gifts and charity -- is certainly
one reason for the
Talmud’s observation
about Adar bringing joy.
But there’s more to it than
that. A deeper look at the
Talmudic passage suggests
that the joy that
Adar heralds is
not only about a
couple of weeks
of merriment
leading into Purim. Rather, our simchah
increases, and deepens, all through the
season.
Think about it: the coming months bring us
not only Purim, but also Passover, our Feast
of Freedom; Yom Ha’atzma’ut, Israel’s
Independence Day, a modern miracle taking
place before our eyes; and Shavuot, the
“season of the giving of our Torah,” which is
celebrated in ways that call to mind a
wedding between God and the Jewish People
(and who doesn’t smile at a wedding!). Each
of these holidays is an opportunity to
experience a different sort of joy. Taken
together, our springtime celebrations connect
us to our history, both ancient and modern,
and to some of the preeminent Jewish values,
such as liberation and learning.
I mention all of this by way of inviting you to
our “Lunch and Learn” session for March,
which will take place after services on March
14. We’ll join together for a dairy/vegetarian
potluck (call the office if you have
questions or
would like to bring
something), and our
numbers will be
augmented by families
from the El Paso Jewish
Academy, who will be
attending and helping
to lead our Shabbat
worship that morning.
Our topic: “Finding Joy in our Spring
Celebrations.” Rabbi Bellush and I will
present some ways to bring a sense of joy and
celebration to our Pesach seders through
creative readings and all-ages-friendly
activities. We’ll look ahead to the other
springtime holidays, too, considering how
Yom Ha’atzma’ut and Shavuot may be
celebrated with joy.
I look forward to lunching, and learning, with
you on March 14.
B’simchah - with joy,
Rabbi Bach

B’nai Shabbat - March 13, 5:30 pm
On select Friday evenings, we hold “B’nai Shabbat” (“Kids’ Shabbat”), a Shabbat experience
for young children and their families. Toys, songs, prayers, a story, and a snack are all part
of our time together. At the conclusion, all are welcome to join the rest of the congregation
in Zielonka Hall for a snack! B’nai Shabbat is geared toward children through kindergarten
age, but all are welcome. Our next service will be on Friday, March 13 at 5:30 pm.
Classical Reform Service - March 20, 6:15 pm
Join us for our monthly Classical Reform services on Friday, at 6:15 pm. The service and
our worship are enhanced with a style of music in keeping with the period. At this service,
we pray from the Sinai Edition of the Union Prayer Book and enjoy a more formal sermon.
Soul Shabbat - March 28, 9:30 am
“Soul Shabbat,” a Shabbat morning service which combines study and conversation,
chant, and silence, will be held on March 28, beginning at 9:30 am. Our theme, drawn
from the weekly portion, will be “Creating Sanctuaries Within.” If you have questions
about Soul Shabbat, be in touch with Rabbi Bach.
Film Series Kickoff - March 22, 1:30 pm
El Paso’s Jewish Film Series, cosponsored by the El Paso Jewish Federation and
UTEP’s Inter-American Jewish Studies Program, kicks off on March 22 at 1:30 pm
with a screening of “Bethlehem.” This 2013 Israeli film “Tells the story of the
complex relationship between an Israeli Secret Service officer and his teenage
Palestinian informant. Shuttling back and forth between conflicting points of view,
the film is a raw portrayal of characters torn apart by competing loyalties and
impossible moral dilemmas, giving an unparalleled glimpse into the dark and
fascinating world of human intelligence. ” It will be screened at the Stanlee and
Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, on the UTEP campus. Other films will
follow in August, September, and October. For more information, be in touch with
the El Paso Jewish Federation.

Religious School Tu B’Shvat Celebration
This year our fourth and fifth grade students (Dara
Leffman, Ryan Miner, Tess Mansfield, Andrew
Cabrera, and Samuel Kligman) learned about Tu
B’Shevat, by planning a Seder, creating a skit, creating a
mini-Haggadah, cooking vegetable soup and baking
honey cakes, decorating their classroom, setting up ta-
bles and leading the Seder for their parents, the Reli-
gious School students, and faculty.
The student’s skit was based on Leviticus 19:23-25 –
“When you come to the land and you plant any food
tree, you shall surely block its fruit [from use]; it shall
be blocked from you for three years, not to be eaten.
And, in the fourth year, all its fruit shall be holy, a
praise to the Lord. And in the fifth year, you may eat
its fruit.”
In the mini-Haggadah, students included their personal
writings after the blessing and after each of the cups of
wine (juice) were drunk. Their writings included:
Trees, Water, Preserving Our Planet, the Shivat Hamimim (the seven species - types of fruits and grains that
grow in Israel.)
Trees by: Dara Leffman
Trees help us with cleaning the air. Trees also give
us shade and food. Trees can provide shelter. It
may not seem like it, but trees can help us so much.
Trees give us paper. Trees and humans rely on each
other.
Water - by: Andrew Cabrera
Water is very important. Every single living thing is
more than 50% water. You can only survive 3 days
without water. We must conserve water because
97% of our water is salt/ocean water and is not
drinkable, 2% is frozen water and only 1% is fresh
water. And, that 1% must be divided over every
single living thing on earth. Water is really called H2O. The “O” stands for oxygen, which we can only survive
1 minute, without. We also get oxygen from trees, which need carbon dioxide, which is given by humans. So,
we rely on each other and both rely on water.
Preserving Our Planet - by: Tess Mansfield
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, are some words you have to have heard. Preserving our planet is very important.
(Continued on page 9)
Page 9 March, 2015/Adar-Nisan, 5775 Messages from the Mountain
A few simple ways to do this is to STOP littering. I mean all you have to do is walk a few steps. I think hu-
manity is capable of that. Other ways are: take shorter showers, turn the water off when you are brushing
your teeth, and turn the lights off when you leave a room, recycle, and plant trees. Tu B’Shevat is a great ex-
cuse to do all of that. These things are simple and we are quite capable of doing them.
Jewish National Fund (JNF) - by: Brent Mobbs - Teaching Assistant
The JNF or Jewish National Fund is a non-profit organization founded to buy, develop, maintain and reclaim
land in Palestine and Israel. Since its inception in 1901, it has planted over 240 million trees. It has also built
180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres of land, and established over 1,000 parks. For its contribu-
tion to society, the JNF was awarded the Israel Prize in 2002.
Shivat Hamimin - by: Samuel Kligman
Israel is a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, pomegranates, a
land of olive trees and honey. (Deut. 8.8)
These foods mentioned above are what are known as “The Seven
Species”. These foods are what the Jewish people ate during bibli-
cal times. These foods are unique and can have spiritual signifi-
cance reflected by the blessing recited after eating them.
Eating these foods is a sign of redemption to everyone who has per-
secuted the Jews. It’s a sign of redemption to others who hurt us
because we now have an abundance of food.
The seven species are: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates,
olives and dates.
The room was beautifully decorated in browns and greens, tables were decorated with brown table cloths and
flowers. The presenters, parents, Religious School students and faculty enjoyed white and purple grape juice,
“Assiyah” (bananas, almonds), “Yetzirah” (olives and apricots), and “Briyah” (blueberries and raisins). The
meal consisted of vegetable soup and honey cakes the students prepared, a salad, and crusty bread.
A special “Thank you” goes out to David Leffman for leading the cooking session and to their teacher Sherry
Grinsteiner and Madrichim – Bree Meyer and Brent Mobbs for all of their assistance and involvement with
this amazing Tu B’Shevat Seder.

Volunteers Needed
Towards the end of every month, the Membership Committee has a group of people who make phone calls to all of
the Temple members celebrating birthdays and/or anniversaries the following month to send best wishes from Tem-
ple. The callers also remind people that we have a Family Shabbat the first Friday of every month, when the people
celebrating a birthday or anniversary are called up to the bima for a blessing.
The committee is looking for some new volunteers to make these calls to our members. This mitzvah takes very little
time and is usually much appreciated.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Marian Daross at [email protected].
Congregation Meets Rabbi Ben Zeidman The Search Committee was pleased to invite Rabbi Ben Zeidman and his wife, Katie, to El Paso for a second site visit on Febru-
ary 19 and a four-day introduction to the congregation. In addition to touring El Paso and meeting with the Search Committee,
the majority of their time was spent meeting the Temple family. Quality time was spent worshipping together, socializing, and
learning more about one another through several question and answer sessions that were open for all to attend. It was truly an
informative process full of energy and promise -- one which brings an end to this portion of our search for a full-time Rabbi.
What has transpired thus far?
In July, the Board formed a Research Committee to obtain information on the qualities in a Rabbi that were most important
to the congregation. In an effort to get as much feedback as possible, a survey was sent to the membership, a congregational
meeting was held in October, and a special web address was set up to solicit comments.
Simultaneously, Temple submitted its application to CCAR and entered the Placement Process. The Research Committee
held many discussions and trainings with URJ and CCAR representatives to learn about the best practices in a sacred search.
Screening elements were formulated based on the input received and interview questions were developed to ascertain as
much knowledge as possible about the candidates that were to be interviewed after careful vetting of their resumes.
After 3 months of research, the Board directed the committee to form a Search Committee and began receiving resumes from
CCAR. In all, 11 applications were received; 4 of which resulted in SKYPE interviews; 3 of which resulted in on-site visits.
During the initial site visits, applicants answered MANY questions from the Search Committee, Past Presidents, Study
Groups, Choir, Senior Citizens, Teens, and Staff. They were also taken on a tour of El Paso.
Based on the information gleaned during those site visits, it was decided that only one candidate would move forward in the
process. In this regard, Tommy Goldfarb and Susan Jaffee traveled to New York to observe Rabbi Ben Zeidman leading in
his own congregation.
Interest remained strong in Rabbi Zeidman, and he and his family were invited to visit El Paso to meet the entire congrega-
tion where 3 open opportunities were made available for all congregants to meet them.
Members were asked to send in their evaluation of Rabbi Zeidman at [email protected] by March 1.
Based on the feedback received during and after the course of Rabbi Zeidman’s visit, discussions have proceeded to review
the terms of his possible employment.
Where do we go from here?
As dictated by Temple’s by-laws, there is a two-step process before presenting Rabbi Zeidman with a final contract. First,
the Search Committee must make a recommendation to the Board and present a draft of the proposed contract, giving the
Board a 14-day advance notice to study the terms.
Upon approval of the contract, a special meeting will be called for the Congregation (with 10-days advance notice), where
full members in good standing will be asked to vote on offering Rabbi Zeidman a full-time contract. The vote must pass
with a two-thirds majority of those in attendance. This meeting is expected to be held at the end of March. Be on the look-
out for the announcement of this special meeting and plan to attend!
In the meantime, our thanks to all who have helped us reach this point so far by expressing your opinions, asking thoughtful
questions, taking the time to participate, offering your homes for events, chauffeuring, planning, meeting and greeting, and most
of all for caring about Temple. Exciting times and opportunities await us all.
Submitted by Debbie Hamlyn and Keith Myers, Search Committee Co-Chairs

A variety of adult learning programs happen each week at Temple:
Mishneh Torah class is held most Tuesdays at 5:00 pm. This year, we are engaging Maimonides’ magnum
opus, the Mishneh Torah, focusing on those aspects of his legal code that explore character and ethics. We
are currently studying “the Laws of the Foundations of the Torah.” This month, class will be held every
Tuesday except for March 17.
Torah study on most Shabbat mornings at 9:30 am: Rabbi Bach typically brings a Chasidic reflection on the
weekly Torah portion. These texts, coming out of 18th and 19th century Eastern Europe, are striking in
their relevance to contemporary seekers of meaning. This month, we will not meet on March 28, when we will
celebrate “Soul Shabbat.”
Torat Nashim Thursday mornings at 10:30 am in the Library. This year Rabbi Bellush is teaching the Book
of Judges.
Mindfulness Meditation on Thursdays at 9:00 am: Rabbi Bach leads our meditation each week. A brief
“mindful” take on the weekly portion precedes a 20-minute period of silence. We typically conclude at
about 9:40 am.
(Please note that these schedules are subject to change, and should be verified by checking our website
calendar at www.templemountsinai.com or by calling the Temple office at 532-5959.)

ReformJews4Israel.org - ARZA in the WZC Elections
ARZA, the Association of Reform Zionists of America, is the Zionist organization of the Reform
Movement. Its goal is to create an Israel that is both Jewish and democratic, a free society committed to
equality of religion, gender, race and ethnicity, as outlined in Israel’s declaration of independence.
Every five years, the World Zionist Congress meets to chart a course and establish priorities within Israel
and around the world. Elections held in the months preceding the Congress determine the proportion of
delegates from each slate. Our Reform movement, represented by ARZA, is campaigning on the following
principles:
Women’s Rights & Gender Equality: We strive for an Israel in which gender equality is the rule –
where men and women can pray as they wish and work and live together as equals, deserving of the
same respect and honor.
Religious Equality: We envision and work for a society in which all denominations are treated fairly
and with respect; an Israel in which all of us are accepted as Jews, regardless of our level of observance.
Two States; One Path to Peace: Lasting peace, security and stability for Israel, the Palestinians and the
surrounding Middle East region is possible through a commitment to a two-state solution. Although
the road may seem long, we must pursue the path to that peace every day.
A VOTE FOR ARZA IS A VOTE TO PROMOTE THE EGALITARIAN, PLURALISTIC, PEACEFUL
VISION OF JUDAISM IN ISRAEL.

El Paso Holocaust Museum
El Paso Holocaust Museum presents "Beyond the Basics: Spring Lecture Series" on
the theme "The Others: Collaborators, Perpetrators, Bystanders and Rescuers of the
Holocaust," February - April, 2015. Each month a Holocaust historian or
scholar will delve into a topic from the theme of "The Others," exploring the
social and psychological complexities of those who committed the
atrocities, those who stood-by in silence, and those
who protected the persecuted. Lectures are
free and open to the public. Certificates for
Continuing Education Credits will be
provided for all educators. All lectures begin
at 5:30 pm and end by approximately 7:00 pm.
This month’s event will be held on March 26, and
