by Lorraine Cherry, TMCC Environmental Chair

As discussed in previous issues of the Timbergram, Southwaste Disposal, located on Hurst Street just west of section 5, submitted an application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quali ty (TCEQ) to expand their operations. Southwaste processes grease waste from restaurants around the city and septic waste from the Harris County toll road stations, and their routine operations generate offensive odors that are an ongoing concer n for the surrounding community. Last November, we reported that the TCEQ had responded to letters from the community by delaying approval of the proposed expansion (application No. 2241B) until another public meeting could be held. Since then, several months have passed and there has been no public meeting. What happened?

I spoke with the TCEQ in late January to get an update. They told me that Southwaste asked to have their application put on hold while they improved their current facility and was also exploring the idea of seeking a new location. The improvements, which they propose to make at the request of the new Grace Church, include construction of two new buildings to enclose a new air scrubber and the replacement of open storage basins with closed tanks. In addition, they would agree to suspend plant operat ions on Sundays. I f implemented, these improvements would conceivably mitigate a great deal of the current odor problem. Of course, the best solution to the odor problem would be for Southwaste to relocate, but a move to a new location would probably not be

pursued if they proceed with the improvements to the current site.

What can be done in the meantime? You can file a 311 complaint (dial 311 or email [email protected], with a cc to Counc i l Member Cohen’s o ffice, [email protected]) each time you experience the smell. Ask that your complaint be directed to the City of Houston Bureau of Pollution Control and Prevention.

There are specific issues that BPCP would like to have addressed in each odor pollution complaint:

• Date, start time and end time of problem

• Is it still occurring at the time that you make the complaint

• Name and address of alleged source, type of operat ion [Southwaste Disposal, 6407 Hurst, Houston 77008; restaurant waste and sewage treatment and disposal]

• Nature of pollution [e.g., foul smell]

• Description of what it smells like, how it is affecting you

• Intensity (very strong, strong, moderate, light, very light)

• Offensiveness (highly of fensive, offensive, unpleasant)

• Weather conditions during incident (e.g., wind direction and speed, temp, etc.)

• Has this happened before

• Your name, address, phone, email

You may not be able to address all of these issues with each complaint (e.g., if you experience the bad smell as you are driving by on West 11th Street), but do the best you can.

Run the Grove Benefits West 11th Street Park

If you haven’t already signed up for the “Run the Grove” 5K fun run, you might give it some thought. Sponsored by the Timbergrove Manor Neighborhood Association, this event will be held on Saturday, April 18th. The starting point will be on West 11th Street directly across the street from West 11th Street Park and the finish line will be at the ball field on the Shirkmere side of the park. There will be food trucks, informational booths, kid events, etc. at the ball field after the event. The race has been certified by the U.S. Track & Field Association. This is the first time for the “Run the Grove”

race, which TMNA hopes will become an annual event. The registration fee is $25 per adult runner and $15 per child runner (15 & under).

We are excited about this event because part of the proceeds will be coming directly to West 11th Street Park to benefit our Trail Fund! It will also mean that a lot of people who may not have been to the park before will be coming out to see it for the first time. For more information or to register for the race, go to www.tmnaonline.org/run-the-grove .

Watch out! By the time this issue of the

Timbergram reaches your doorstep, we will be into the beginning of the spring

b i r d migration. D o z e n s o f colorful species of birds—warblers, b u n t i n g s , o r i o l e s ,

tanagers, and more—will be returning from their winter hiatus in Central and South America, stopping briefly to rest at West 11th Street Park before heading north. March and April are the best times to catch a glimpse of these gorgeous birds. Grab your binoculars and come on out to the park!

Timbergrove’s History Includes Famous

Residents After more than 30 years in office,

Texas Senator John Whitmire is known by many Timbergrove residents. But what you may not know is is that Senator Whitmire lived in the neighborhood for a number of years. According to a TMCC resident, Whitmire and his mother lived directly across the street from each other on Lindyann Ln. After his mother passed away, Whitmire kept her home and used it as an office.

Senator Whitmire, a graduate of Waltrip High School, continues to represent Timbergrove at the state level. His official area office is located at in the Heights at 803 Yale St.

A c c o r d i n g t o a l o n g - t i m e Timbergrove resident, the neighborhood was also home to Marcella D. Perry. A

native of Houston, Perry's life was one of diversity and variety. Her professional endeavors have spanned multiple areas including performance and business. But despite a promising start as a dancer, Perry is best known for taking over the family business. Along with her father, she is well known as the founder of Heights Savings. She also was a Port Commissioner for the Port of Houston Authority, board member of the Houston Chamber of Commerce and has held several leadership and volunteer positions across the city.

If you’re going to maintain an exercise routine, you need to enjoy it. You can, if you find the exercise that fits your personality. There are several quizzes you can take online (try the one at exercise.about.com, and search for “exercise quiz”), but here are some quick tips by personality type:

“I get bored easily.”

Sign up for Zumba, an aerobic dance class that will get you moving. A dance studio or sports club usually offers these classes.

“I am a competitive person.”

T r y C r o s s F i t . G o t o www.crossfit.com to learn about these timed, intense exercises in which participants compete against one another. Then search the local area for a CrossFit gym.

“I want to relax.”

Yoga may be for you. Researchers say doing even 15 minutes a day can lower stress in your body. Search for a yoga studio.

“I prefer to exercise alone.”

You can get a total body workout in minutes by swimming a few laps at a recreation center or YMCA. Plus, it’s better on your joints.

“I love to socialize.”

Join a team (softball or volleyball, for example) or start a running club with friends. You’ll have fun and hold each other accountable.

“I love to get my heart pumping.”

Sign up for Spinning at a local fitness club. It’s fast-paced indoor cycling that includes lights and music to make it a fun adventure.

Real Estate Corner… Q. What should I know when buying my first home?

A. Buying your first home is a big step, and making mistakes can cost you thousands of dollars. Here are three you should avoid:

• Not having a professional home inspection. Review the report carefully so you don’t buy a home with serious issues, such as pests, mold, or water damage.

• Not doing a “walk-through” before closing. Visit the property after all the

furnishings have been removed so you won’t have any surprises later.

• Not understanding the contract. A REALTOR® who serves as your “Buyer’s Representative” will help you understand your responsibilities and guide you through the process.

“Let them eat cake!”…or home-made soup?…or a Cuban sandwich?

You often hear a local restaurant referred to as a “Hidden Treasure”; just as often, you discover that it is neither hidden nor is it a particular treasure. But even if you hang out in Spring Branch a lot, you may never have seen World Catering & Bakery, located across from Walmart at 1073 Silber. And even if you’ve seen it, it’s likely that it never occurred to you that they serve some of the best lunches in the area.

While taking the back route to Ikea one day a few months ago, we happened upon World Catering around lunch time, and were curious about all of the cars in the parking lot. “Can all of these people be here ordering cakes?” I wondered, since that seemed to be their specialty. When I returned a few weeks later to check it out, I discovered that they have a small but stellar lunch menu, whipped up by a chef with 33+ years experience in

the kitchen. On that first visit, my attention was grabbed by a Cuban sandwich (A Cuban sandwich in a European bakery? What’s going on here?) featuring oven-roasted pork, ham, cheese, and pickles grilled together on Panini bread. I couldn’t resist, and I’m glad I didn’t. Hot, gooey, juicy—about 2X too big for me, but I finished it all anyway. The next time out I dragged Dave with me, and we discovered that the BLT and chicken salad were just as good, and that the velvety rich cream of celery soup (the soup of the day) had absolutely nothing in common with the one that comes in the red and white can. They have a lunch special every day. I noticed that today it is jambalaya. Yesterday it was spaghetti and meatballs, another day it was smothered pork chops. They are also open for breakfast, with breakfast tacos, a breakfast sandwich, bacon & eggs, steel-cut oatmeal, and very good coffee.

With “Bakery” in the title, there are obviously baked goods available, in

addition to the excellent breads used in the sandwiches. They have first-rate baguettes and wonderful cookies. (My favorite is a maple pecan shortbread with a crunchy sugar edge.) Should you be in the market, they are known for their wedding cakes, and have won numerous prizes for their designs. Actually, a cake for any special occasion would be a good bet here. Wouldn’t you love to bite into a chocolate cinnamon torte soaked in Colombian mocha cream? Or a coconut cake with passionfruit filling and whipped meringue? Oh my!

World Catering & Bakery is open Monday – Friday from 7AM - 6PM, and Saturday from 8AM - 4PM. Check out t h e i r m e n u a t h t t p : / /www.worldcateringbakery.com/#!menu/ch8j .
