“Spiritual Exercise”

Most people that I know are conscientious when it comes to their physical health.

For the most part, we watch what we eat and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle through

exercise, diet, and rest. Some of you walk, others run, while others do Pilates, aerobics, or

lift weights. For the extreme exercise enthusiasts, boot camp classes are even offered. I

prefer a gentler and kinder approach to exercise.

We are good at concentrating on our physical bodies when it comes to exercise, but do you ever think

about exercising your spiritual muscles? The spiritual body, like the physical body, needs to be exercised,

lest it goes into atrophy. I find that unless the spirit is nurtured and stimulated, it is easy to become compla-

cent in our walk with Jesus Christ.

The season of Lent, these 40 days leading up to Easter, provides a good time to work on our spiritual

lives. This season provides a time to reflect and renew our relationship with God and recommit our lives to

the ministry and mission of Jesus Christ. With our physical bodies, we have to be intentional about going for

a walk or getting to the gym. The same intentionality is true with the Spirit. Here are some ways I would

like to encourage you to exercise your spiritual muscles during this special season:

* Daily Devotions: Take a few minutes each day to read some scripture and pray. We offer a Lenten

devotional free of change to help with this exercise. These devotionals are available in our gallery. Another

wonderful devotion I recommend is Jesus Calling by Sarah Young and can be found in local bookstores.

* Lenten Lunch & Learn Series– Join us on Tuesdays at noon in the Fireside Room to share a meal

and leaning together. I am teaching a series on the Old Testament book of Isaiah.

* Sunday school class– Be involved in Sunday school, either as a participant or teacher. Various

classes are currently being offered. I am currently teaching a class that is investigating the evidence of the

life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

* Sunday worship provides a good time to gather with others to be renewed in

our faith. I am currently peaching a sermon series titled, “One On One: Conversa-

tions with Jesus” based on the Gospel of John.

* Small groups within our church offer more personal growth and fellowship.

I hope you will take part in some of the things we offer to help promote your

spiritual growth. Come and join us as we get into shape and grow in our relationship

with God. I look forward to worshipping with you on the next Lord’s Day.

Blessings,

Pastor Dave

Flower Sponsorship Opportunities

Our flower sign-up sheet is located on the back table in the nar-thex. We invite you to sign up for a particular Sunday to sponsor the flow-ers either in honor or memory of someone or a special event such as an anniversary, birthday, etc. There are lots of spots available for flower do-nations in the New Year. Suggested donation is $25. Special thanks to those who donated flowers during the month of January. They include: Suzanne Braun, Jody Mercer Wallace, and Craig & Denise Hash.

The Church Mice

It is always a pleasure to be in the presence of Charlie Reed. He is cheerful, pleasant, positive, and always smiling. In addition to his congenial personality, Charlie is an asset to his church, community and to the organizations to which he belongs. Charlie goes beyond what is requested of him and does it with enthusiasm and charm. We were especially im-pressed that he took $10.00 from the reverse offering last fall to his Kiwanis' group and turned it into over $300.00. Thanks, Charlie, for all you do!

Food Bank Sunday Our church was one of the first churches in Billings to designate a monthly Food Bank Sunday. We invite you to bring some non-perishable food items with you on the first Sunday of each month as we help local people in need. Join us of Sunday, March 1 for our next Food Bank Sunday.

Stephen Ministry Update Our dedicated group of Stephen Ministers continues to reach out to people in our congregation by providing one-on-one caring relationships for those who are hurting, lonely, and/or broken. If you could use or know of someone who could benefit from a Stephen Minister, please contact Doris Backus, Jack Bell, JoAnn Jones or Pas-tor Dave. Our supervision schedule will continue to be the second Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Continuing education guest speakers have been scheduled for each month. Shirley Shirley recently attended the Stephen Ministry Leadership Training in Los Angeles and we are very excited to have her as a part of our leadership team!

Dinners of Eight schedule for February/March

The winter months will soon be behind us, so let’s make the most of it and make sure we get togeth-er. DO NOT MAKE IT HARD OR STRESS OVER IT. This is a fun time. If things are happening so you cannot have it in your home- go to a restaurant. If you find that you cannot host, give someone on your team to do the hosting. Do not let this time fall through There are times that you just cannot host an event, but someone else may be happy to do it, give them a chance. The Host(s) (first name(s) in cell) picks a couple of dates during the subject Month that is convenient for you and calls your guests. If you are short of guests (someone may not be able to come), fill in the spaces with new faces with substitutes listed below or anyone not involved in dinners of eight (don’t forget new members or older members). Let your guests know when and where to come and what side dish or beverage to bring if any. If you do not hear from your host call them, they may have forgotten. This is a very flexible program. Any activities to accompany or follow your dinner are up to you. Even the dinner format can be modified to a brunch or whatever creative ideas you come up with includ-ing eating out. Enjoy your dinners! It is not necessary to have 8 people for dinner, any number is OK. If there are any questions or problems, etc., please notify Pat Hastings immediately at 696-0281 or [email protected] (be sure to title it Dinners of Eight). Please note any new names on the list or changes. Also, if you have a change in your email please let me know. I am getting some back.

Mission News We would like to send a big THANK YOU to Kay Doss for all of the meals she has made for the Hub. Kay does receive some financial help from the Mission Committee and from anonymous donors. She is very thankful for the money. Kay has made one mid-day meal for the HUB per month for some 10 to 15 years. Thankfully the people from the HUB pick the food up and take it to the HUB for her. She is committed to mak-ing home made from scratch meals and occasionally orders pizza for 75 to 100 people. She uses about 10 to 12

pounds of meat for the meal. She does all of this on the first Monday of each month. On the second Monday she likes to take lots of cookies or bars over. Cookies is where she can use help. If you would like to make cookie for the HUB, call Kay at 248-8930. She would love to talk to you. Ponderosa Pines: The last Tuesday of each month Dave leads a worship time at 3:00. Everyone is welcome to join in this time of worship and song. The Butterfly Home: Dave leads the residents in worship and song on the fourth Thursday from 3:00 to 3:30. Everyone is welcome there as well. Makokoba Presbyterian Church in Zimbabwe: We continue to be in communication with our sister church. The Mission Committee are working on ways to help the worshipers and members there. Presbytery is emphasizing Mission work. Maybe a group from our presbytery and even our church can visit Zimbabwe. Wouldn’t that be exciting and a blessed time with God’s people? Our May 31st Noisy Offering will go to EMMS International to support flood victims in Malawi, Africa. But before that will be our annual fishing derby for ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING? How many pounds of coins can we collect this year?

Thanks for all of your help as we reach out to others!

Youth News:

There has been a lot going on at FPC Youth and there is a lot to that is coming too! On February 20-22, we had a junior and senior mini-retreat at Eagle Rock Sanctuary. It was a wonderful to get away for a couple days and refocus on our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ! We had three guest speakers come throughout the month of February to share their testimony to our high school students and how why they decided to follow Christ and how He has changed their lives! There are couple things to look forward to in the near future. March 13-15 is our annual Ski re-treat. We will be headed to Butte for the weekend for some amazing fellowship, growing, and skiing and snowboarding. Also, March 22 is the annual Youth Basket Auction. Please put together a basket and join us for some great fun and baskets to bid on! You can bring your basket early to the church if you desire and I will put them in my office. Finally, April 5th, Easter Sunday we are going to have another Easter egg hunt for kids of all ages! Please join us for that, and there will also be breakfast provided that morning as well. Please continue to pray for the students and leaders! Thank you so much for all that you do!

In Christ,

Sunday Morning Adult Education Opportunities

Pastor Dave continues a Sunday school class titled “The Case for Christ.” Based on the best selling book by Lee Strobel, Pastor Dave is exploring the evidence that points to the Risen Christ. Join us for this fascinating six week class that will help deepen your faith and understanding of the life, death, and resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ. This class meets every Sunday at 9:15 AM in the Fireside Room. Church and Society guests for the month of March will be: March 1: Jim Gransbery, Retired Gazette Agricultural and Political Reporter, "Hinges on History, Freedom of Religion or Freedom from Religion, Gay Marriage and Contraception.” The U.S. Supreme Court will be deciding 2 cases about gay marriage and contraception that will affect life in America for years to come. The Court handed down a decision regarding contraception and businesses but will decide if and how contracep-tion affects non-profits that include churches. Will the fact that 6 out of 9 of the Justices are Catholic influ-ence their decision? March 8: Dr. Alan Muskett, Plastic Surgeon and Gazette columnist, "What to do When Life Steps on Your Tail.” Dr. Muskett will discuss responses to adverse events in life such as illness, injury, or death. How do we respond to these? What role does our faith and religion play at these times? Why isn’t life more fair? March 15: Dr. Robert and Dr. Lori Byron, Internist and Pediatrician, respectively, and members of the Cli-mate Reality Leadership Corps, "The Power to Change: We are the Stewards.” The title, taken from Presby-terian doctrine, encapsulates their presentation about our changing climate and what we, as Christians and concerned citizens, can do about it. They will explore the causes, the problems, and the solutions. As physi-cians they will discuss how these changes are affecting everyone. Lori works on the Crow Reservation and Robert shares time at the Bighorn Valley Health Center in Hardin and as a hospitalist at St. Vincent Healthcare. March 22: Stephen Ministry Team at First Presbyterian. If you have been wondering exactly what our team does, join us for an informative hour. We will be explaining our training, what we do, and sharing some ex-periences with you. Our hope is that members of the congregation will use the services that we provide. March 29: Sherry Matteucci, former U.S. Attorney, will discuss “American Indians: A Brief History.”

American Indians have lived in North America for more than 10,000 years. We will discuss highlights from

early history through the unique role which American Indians play in today's United States.
