By John Strauss, interim general manager

When it comes to making a difference in our community, there’s more to WIPB-TV and Indiana Public Radio than what you hear and see over the air.

Our recent staff addition of Michelle Kinsey is a good reminder of that. Michelle covered local schools and the arts for years as a distinguished reporter for The Star Press of Muncie, and made her mark locally as a longtime volunteer in public broadcasting.

She recently joined us as community engagement coordinator for the stations. She’ll help increase awareness of public media as our ambassador to the community and take a major role in our community engagement in education and other areas.

Michelle said she couldn’t wait to get started.

“It’s no secret that I have been a big fan of WIPB and IPR for several years,” she said.

“To be able to channel that in a tangible way — by helping to ensure that both stations play an important role in our community, from programs we air to outreach opportunities we offer — is nothing short of a dream job.”

Lori Georgi, membership and community engagement manager for the stations, said Michelle will serve as a local ambassador, helping increase awareness of public media.

“We’re going to take programs that we think are beneficial to our community and use them to discuss issues of importance,” Lori said.

Downton Abbey - Season 5 FinaleSunday, March 1, 9 p.m.

A trip north to Brancaster Castle to visit Lady Rose’s new in-laws proves quite interesting for the Crawley family. Mary delightfully schemes with Baxter and Barrow to put a very snobbish, rude butler in his place. Through a sequence of events too complicated to explain, it leads to the reveal that Lord Sinderby has an illegitimate

child in London. But Lady Rose gets into his good graces by covering for him, and he realizes he shouldn’t be so uptight about her parents’

divorce. All this and more in DOWNTON ABBEY’S Season 5 finale.

Wellness Matters “Teen Body Image and Eating Disorders” vSaturday, March 21, 8 p.m.Maintaining a healthy body image is a challenge, especially for teens and young adults. Having a negative body image puts you at risk for developing eating disorders, depression, and low self esteem. WELLNESS MATTERS takes a look at how body image and eating disorders affect today’s youth, how it affects boys versus girls, signs of eating disorders, resources in our area, and much more.

Independent Lens: Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines

Monday, March 16, 10 p.m.Trace the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, “Wonder Women!” looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect

society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.

Joe Bonamassa: Muddy Wolf at Red RocksWednesday, March 11, 8 p.m.Guitar hero Joe Bonamassa is set to perform an exclusive event concert experience at Red Rocks Amphitheater celebrating the music of blues legends Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. This tribute concert will be performed one time only and will feature a special ensemble of amazing musicians, filmed for PBS.

Indiana Weekend “Muncie Sesquicentennial, Renaissance Faire, Sparky’s Book” v

Saturday, March 21, 8:30 p.m.As Muncie begins a year-long celebration of its 150th birthday, local residents consider the community’s progress – and challenges. And we visit the Renaissance Faire in Fishers and

a country tavern – with its remarkable owner – lauded in a new book by Muncie writer John Carlson.

Call the Midwife Season 4Sundays, beginning March 29, 8 p.m.Inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, CALL THE MIDWIFE follows the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House, who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. In Season 4, the community prepares to enter a new decade — the 1960s.

Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The Emperor of All MaladiesMarch 30, 31 and April 1, 9 p.m.Directed by award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman and executive produced by Ken Burns, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D. This “biography” of cancer covers its first documented appearances thousands of years ago to the present to cure, control and conquer cancer. The project matches the epic scale of cancer, reshaping the way the public sees cancer and stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded it.

Masterpiece: Mr. Selfridge Sunday, March 29, 9 p.m.Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) returns for a third season as a wheeling-dealing American who shows early 1900s Londoners how to shop. Based on the life of a colorful retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, the new eight-part series

is created by Emmy Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice,” “Bleak House”).

(cont’d from pg. 1)“We’re going to have an important role in

the community as active participants. You’ll see Michelle at a discussion on race one day, and the next, planning an event at a daycare center in one of our other counties.”

The idea is to use broadcasting leverage to provide a boost wherever possible.

“I hope we can partner with our communities for events and celebrations, and talk about issues that are important to them,” Lori said.

The theme is a commitment to helping in communities where possible.

“Engagement is part of public broadcasting — part of our mission,” Lori said. “We want to not only educate on our broadcasts but to make a difference in the community by taking what’s on the air and expanding the educational component.”

On television, that means helping families prepare their youngest children for school with PBS KIDS, which includes SuPER WhY to teach reading and PEG + CaT to explore math concepts.

The impact of those shows is amplified by Martha Speaks Reading Buddies, which is one of the community engagement efforts that focuses on mentoring in which fifth graders and kindergartners are matched to help the younger children learn to read.

“Michelle will be a big help in all of this,” Lori said.

“She has been in the community a long time and has years of experience covering the schools, which will give her a leg up as we work to collaborate with them in these educational partnerships.”

To contact Michelle, call (765) 285-5887 or email [email protected].
