Greetingsfrom the publisher

Find the world threatening? Try avoiding it

Welcome to our issue on fearlessness. It seems like everywhere we look these days we are told to be afraid— very afraid. Why not spend a few minutes looking in the other direction?

We have another article this issue, one by Dr. Lissa Rankin, that looks at fear with a different focus. Since there is, after all, more than one kind of fear, we decided to look at it from a couple of directions.

To start, I admit we don't normally hear that avoidance is an effective strategy for confronting or resolving fears. The coura-geous approach is to take them head on, right? Don't avoid them.

I agree with that too—but perhaps de-fine that differently than some. There are at least a couple of things we might want to do before avoiding or combating what we hear is to be feared whether we are looking at an individual fear or one that our society is facing.

It's useful to determine first what the fear is telling us. Should we pay attention?

From what we are learning about the brain these days, it's getting clearer that our bodies sense things—and we can emotionally and physically react to them—often before the brain translates that impulse and tells "us" what's going on. You might say our brains are sometimes the last ones to know.

I recently read that people's bodies will pick up impending danger on a dark street and make physical changes in the body before our minds get the signal to watch out.

There are legitimate fears and it's use-ful to take a look and see if the fear isn't telling us to pay closer attention. Are we about to be damaged? Or not? We want that feeling.

We also know that we have an adrena-line gland that tends to accelerate our

sense of how quickly we need to react. That's the good news and the bad news. We can very quickly jump into a fear-based fight-or-flight mode and often don't need to.

Letting it be uncomfortable for a mo-ment or two while we decide what's a real threat can be difficult. What seems to be lacking in our world today is taking that moment to determine if we really want to react or not. Deciding it's best not to move or not do something right now seems to be especially difficult for our society.

But really, it's useful to know when there is a fear that warrants a response—know-ing what fights are worth fighting—and when we are simply following the jerk that knew where to kick us?

In control?Ultimately, when deciding to take on a

fearful circumstance, isn't it most useful to first determine if we can have any control over it or not? Realistically, if we don't have any control over it, is being afraid useful?

How useful would it be for us to worry about a comet that was about to destroy the earth? We might find a few things that we want to do before we are extinguished, but we probably won't find worrying to be very useful.

So what's the opposite approach? Watching TV, especially the news, as the means to get a less fearful perspective is not the best path. I started watching a series, however, that's become popular that gives us a look at a society with a very different approach: one of fearlessness.

It's the History Channel show called "The Vikings." There is no denying that it's full of battles and fighting, but I've become fascinated at how they look at fear and their faith.

The directors have attempted to keep the daily habits of the people and the

Conscious Life Expo

I attended the Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles Feb 6-8th and saw what amazing things are on the horizon. My interview with Nassim Haramein will be showcased in the upcoming issue. Here's a preview:

Everything in our world is chang-ing, evolving, transforming. Wise men and women throughout history have tried to define the nature of the reality in which they found themselves. We, these generations, are creating a new model. Is it all figured out and defined? No. Do we know some of the elements of what this future model might look like? Yes.

The primary intention of the Conscious Life Conference and Exposition is simple: to participate in the conscious co-creation of a new world, a world based on new paradigms in science, in spirituality, in longevity, in local and global community, in relationship, in health and well-being. And while we co-create this new holistic model through our authentic self-expression, we also participate in a powerful and passionate celebration of life and love.

The purpose of the Conscious Life Expo is to bring us all together. It is a three-day gathering and celebration of the evo-lution of our consciousness. A place for the each field to come together and brainstorm who we are, what we are and where we are going. Check out the incredible interview I had with Nas-sim Haramein on our website and in next months April issue.

LOCAL FAVES by AmeliA leigh

\\\ Encinitas Community ///

Solterra Winery and Kitchen | 934 N Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024 | (760) 230-2970 | www.solterrawinery.com

Solterra is situated a couple of blocks from the beach, where the climate and humidity is ideal for wine aging and storage in barrels. Turns out to be a great place for consumption as well. Their goal is to offer an educational and satisfying wine experience to patrons while enjoying the process, which is all local. The ambiance is quite fantastic. They have a demonstration vineyard, tasting room, and a new winery was recently engineered. It is equipped with an air intake system that draws in the cool air of the early morning hours and assist with remov-ing the carbon dioxide that is a bi-product of fermentation. There are also plans to put in Solar panels on the roof by 2018.

Owner and Winemaker Chris Van Alyea grew up in Sonoma County and has been making wine for the last 14 years. He strives to make the best wine possible by utilizing grapes from both local and state wide sourced vineyards. All red wines are aged in predominately French oak barrels for a minimum of 14-24 months, depending on the varietal and style of wine produced. Currently in barrel and bottle, there are 14 different red varietals, three whites, roses', ports and late harvest wines. You will also be able to enjoy the flavors of Suzy, who recently won on the show Chef Wanted. The food is delicious, wine is superb and wonderful service (ask for Ian) completes a perfect meal. This place is a fantastic find!

Lofty Coffee | 90 N Coast Hwy 101 #214, Encinitas, CA 92024(760) 230-6747 | www.loftycoffeeco.com

Lofty coffee was started with the goal of doing things differently. They focus squarely on quality and seek the best organic coffees in the world (while maintaining a relationship with the farmers along the way). From farm to cup, they pay homage to these folks through fervent attention to detail at every step, meticulous roasting profiles and extensive barista education. Lofty is a coffee-centric company, but we love our food. They source natural, organic local products so that you experience the best food too. Even give the used grinds to farmers to use as fertilizer.

When I first walked in, I knew these people loved their coffee. Meaghan Cowley, the manager, is super friendly with a bubbly personality that makes you appreciate the hospitality. Great place to meet people and enjoy a wonderful latte. There is so much to be gained from coffee…

Self-Realization Meditation Gardens | 215 K Street,Encinitas, CA 92024 | (760) 753-2888 | Closed on Monday. Open Tuesday – Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 and Sunday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Since I first stepped past the gate into the gardens, I could feel the calm shift. As you look up the stairs, a zen-like feel engulfs you. It is like entering into a dream. At the top awaits a beautiful view and a silent glimpse into infinity. I walked along by myself and noticed that almost everyone has the same respect for solitude and reflection. Of course you get the occasional noisy tourist excited about this great find. Even while in meditation, you feel the deep presence of peaceful separateness’, while still knowing that everything is Divinely connected.

We are all one and matter cannot be created nor destroyed, merely transformed.

Meditation is a fantastic way to help relieve the mind of stress and gain clarity in your life. In today’s society, taking a break to go within should be a normal routine. Everyone should stop by this lovely place, if even only for the spectacular view. Yogananda founded this beautiful garden in 1927 for all to enjoy, for free. So go and smell the roses! Remember to take in the present moment of peace and serenity…

Moonlight Yogurt and Ice | 480 South Coast Highway 101,Encinitas, California 92024 | (760) 487-5272

This is not your traditional "yogurt" shop. It has so much more! They always have different tasty selections each week and lots of rare yummy toppings (like marshmallows and animal cookies with sprinkles). The thing that makes them stand apart is their huge variety of unique amazing drinks. They are known for their Green Protein monster with Kelp, that tastes really good! From fresh juices with ginger, greens and berries to Boba and so much more, this is a great place! I even like the special touch of mint or cucumber infused water they offer, for free! Jerry the manager is super sweet and always talks to the customers to make them feel welcome. There is also a friendly

staff that seems to work very hard, while keeping a smile on their face! It must be a big job to make all of those differ-ent drinks from scratch! Good work!

Welcome to the new Local Faves column. While exploring the area, I want to get to know the locals and feature places that leave a positive impression. There are so many great small communities that make up this amazing big city. Let's start connecting!

Earth Elements | 559 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024(760) 230-6145 | www.earthelements.com

Earth’s Elements is a unique jewelry and fine art gallery offering one-of-a-kind items from around the world. Once I walked in, I knew I had found my type of bliss store with a great vibe. They have beauti-ful handcrafted jewelry, fine art, furniture, Tibetan bowls, sacred art, tapestries, home decor items, books and music. I personally love my Quartz Crystal singing bowl and appreciated seeing the large selec-tion and sizes. The owner, Hem, even came over and played a few for me. He arrived in the United States from Katmandu eight years ago, speaking impeccable English and five other languages. Formerly a tour guide in India, Hem had a vision of selling goods made by the people of his home village and other areas of Nepal. As he explains, each tribe has its own specialty like clothing or jewelry. He has expanded his original vision to carry works by local artists, musicians, and authors.

If you are looking for an adventure, he also owns Kirat Treks, a travel business specializing in trips to Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan. Hem leads fall and spring tours and has even taken people in wheelchairs on cultural tours to the temples, monasteries, and shopping areas. If you are up to trekking in Nepal, he is fully licensed and can get you as far as Mt. Everest’s first base camp at 17,500 feet!

I’ve studied fear from a range of per-spectives that all inform the work we’re doing in this book—from mystical reli-

gious traditions to Western psychology to the lessons of A Course in Miracles—and when I examine fear through the lens of all of these influences, I see that much of our false fear stems from limiting beliefs that make up our worldview. When you’re mindful of the thoughts that drive your deci-sion making, you can make the choice to shift from fear-inducing beliefs that trigger false fear to courage-cultivating beliefs that make you brave. So an essential part of let-ting fear cure you is examining the thoughts that make you scared so you can shift to thoughts that induce peace and engender courage instead.

All false fear arises from thought, and in my experience with clients and the people I interviewed, as well as in my own experi-ence, almost all false fear thoughts stem from four myths that many of us mistakenly adopt as truth. These fear-inducing limit-ing beliefs, which I call the “Four Fearful Assumptions,” represent the dominant worldview of our modern Western culture and lead us to experience a lot of unneces-sary suffering. See if any of the following beliefs sound familiar to you.

Four Fearful AssumptionsUncertainty is unsafe. I can’t handle losing

what I cherish. It’s a dangerous world.

I am all alone.

The Four Fearful Assumptions are merely thoughts, but your Small Self most likely has adopted these cultural beliefs as gospel truth—as so many of us have. Because we believe we can’t feel safe in the face of uncertainty, we conclude that we must pursue safety, security, and certainty at all costs, even if the cost is our health and happiness. Because we believe we can’t handle losing what we cherish, we

try to vigilantly guard against loss, even when doing so makes us cling to what we just can’t keep. Because we grow up be-lieving we live in a dangerous world, often because of what we learned in childhood, we conclude that it’s up to us to ward off poverty, violence, illness, pain, rejection, and abandonment. And because we as-sume we are separate, distinct individuals navigating this dangerous world alone, the primal survival instincts of our tribal spe-cies get triggered and convince us we are vulnerable to injury or death. When this is our dominant worldview, it’s no wonder we wind up feeling very frightened. We simply have too much to lose, and we are not okay with this. Deep down, we’re terrified that we simply cannot handle it if our greatest fears come true.

Yet the Four Fearful Assumptions are relatively recent phenomena in the history of our species. By all measures, primitive human beings used to live in a much more dangerous and uncertain world than we do now. Mothers and children regularly died in childbirth. Everyone and everything was vulnerable to the elements. Living quarters could be easily devastated by natural di-sasters. Infectious diseases could wipe out a whole tribe. Death and loss were com-monplace. People still grieved when they lost what they loved, but they survived and grew from the loss, receiving comfort from the tribal mythology and rituals and com-munion with the spirit realm, which imbued such loss with meaning and purpose. Their worldview helped them handle the kinds of hardships we can’t even fathom.

Not until the scientific revolution did the driving need for knowledge and certainty overtake our willingness to live in the realm of mythology, metaphor, and mystery. The quest for certainty initially helped us feel safe because we began to understand more about how the world works. This knowledge allowed us some understanding of science, so we no longer believed we were at the whim of uncertain, unexplain-able, unpredictable forces, the way indig-enous cultures often did. But this craving for certainty came with a dark side. We lost our tolerance for uncertainty and loss, and this led us to conclude that we lived all alone in a dangerous world.

As modern life evolved, we shifted from a culture that perceived ourselves to be

intricately interlinked beings in constant communion with nature into a culture where the dominant worldview is that we are separate, distinct, carbon-based life forms whose consciousness exists only in our brains. Indigenous cultures believed everything to be connected—not just all humans or even all animals, but water, the ocean, the mountains, even the weather. Today, we have come to believe that we are connected to nothing, which is one reason the survival of the planet is now at risk. Fortunately, since our culture’s fear-inducing beliefs are just that—beliefs—we can take the opportunity to question our fears and heal our thoughts.

THE FOUR COURAGE-CULTIVATING TRUTHS

So what can we do to transform our relationship with false fear? We can make a conscious choice to replace fearful thoughts with thoughts that comfort, heal, and help us feel safe. To use a simple example, if your thought is I’m not good enough, it’s helpful to recognize that this is just a thought—one that limits you—and ask yourself what might be an alternative to this thought, something to empower and free you instead.

In Loving What Is, Byron Katie teaches “The Work,” which is based on four ques-tions that help you turn around a limiting belief into a more genuine truth. Some-times the turnaround is an affirmation that is the direct opposite of the limiting belief. For example, the turnaround of I’m not good enough might be I am enough. But often, the turnaround is deeper and more complex than the simple opposite of the limiting belief. When we apply a similar sort of “turnaround” logic to the Four Fearful Assumptions, we can replace these limiting beliefs with a set of empowering beliefs that I call the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths.

Four Courage-Cultivating Truths

Truth #1: Uncertainty is the

gateway to possibility.Truth #2:

Loss is natural and can lead to growth.

Truth #3: It’s a purposeful universe.

Truth #4: We are all One.

Making this shift from the Four Fearful Assumptions to the Four Courage-Culti-vating Truths is less of a cognitive process and more of an intuitive one. I will offer your cognitive mind evidence that the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths can be trusted, but your cognitive mind will keep trying to talk you out of believing them. Your cogni-tive mind is not your friend when it comes to letting fear heal you. Although it’s trying to be helpful, when it comes to false fear, your cognitive mind can hurt you more than it can help because it tends to be governed by your Small Self, rather than by your In-ner Pilot Light. This is where the intuitive argument comes in. Your Inner Pilot Light governs your intuition, and it already knows that the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths can be trusted. So the real shift happens when you learn to trust this part of you.

The worldview I’ll be presenting to you in the next four chapters is not something I just randomly pulled out of my black doc-tor’s bag. I’ll be providing your cognitive

flying overhead. When this man heard a siren, he was “back in Iraq.” His hand went to his hip, where he used to carry his gun. He would fall to the ground, duck and cover, and wait for the “bomb to explode.”

“Once you have heard one traumatic story, you cannot

“un-hear” or “un-see” it."Diagnosis is an art and a science. All too often, doctors come

to think of diagnoses as realities. The alphabet-soup diagnoses (such as ADD, BPD, OCD, PTSD, MPD, ED) create a sense of certainty about things that are not certain. If you have pneumo-coccal pneumonia, treatment with a specific antibiotic is going to be the right treatment 99% of the time. But the treatment of emotional suffering is not so neat and clean.

Coming HomeThe VA Hospital should screen all vets returning from combat

for signs of PTSD. Most vets need to have access to group therapy in which they can share and listen to war experiences of other vets. People should not be pushed into talking, but when a vet is in the safety of a group of fellow veterans, he starts to feel that it’s safe to start sharing his horror story. Survivors of trauma often believe that their trauma is not as important as someone else’s. It takes time for warriors to find new ways of experiencing life.

I worked with a vet with PTSD whose job didn’t sound particu-larly dangerous. He didn’t go into combat. He stayed in a military compound in Iraq, scanning the surroundings with binoculars, and watching a military convoy head off into potential danger each morning. When the convoy returned from battle, his job was to clean up a vehicle that carried dead bodies, body parts, and blood, carefully wrapping the dead, and then making sure that the vehicle was scrubbed clean and ready to head back into the fray the next day. He didn’t have stories to share like a vet whose close buddy just had his head blown off, while standing five feet away. That soldier would have dragged his friend to safety, perhaps to a medic if the individual was still alive…and then that vet would turn around and head back into harm’s way. If a close friend or relative of yours were shot to death, you would be traumatized. It’s hard to imagine some-one whose buddy was just blown to pieces, and then he has to immediately be ready for the next volley of shells or bullets. There is no time to stop, reflect, or feel.

A Vietnam War Battalion Surgeon RecoversDr. Larry Dossey wrote about his experience as a battalion

surgeon in Vietnam 30 years after he returned from the Viet-nam War. The first time he wrote about his war experience his publisher rejected that chapter because it was “too graphic.” Here is his story.

Nearly 30% of veterans treated by the VA have post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). Those who died fighting in wars in the twentieth century total 160 million.

The ravages of war include the families, towns, and countries traumatized by those lost in war.

During the last 1,025 years 11 European countries were at war 47% of the time. During the twentieth century three seri-ous wars have been in action somewhere in the world at any particular moment. 100 million unexploded land mines remain hidden beneath the dirt of 65 countries. 17 million children are homeless victims of war, struggling with starvation, infection, and tormented minds.

In the news PTSD is rarely described in detail, but is gen-eralized as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and hyper-vigilance following a traumatic event. We often hear words on the news like, “The following story contains material that may be difficult to watch. Look away or turn off the volume if that is the case.”

There are millions of people in the world who have suffered atrocities, trauma, loss, death, devastation, and torture that are so extreme that, once you have heard one traumatic story, you cannot “un-hear” or “un-see” it.

Diagnosing PTSDWhile this article will discuss the formal diagnosis of PTSD,

we need to understand that little justice is done to those maimed or killed by war by applying a 4-letter psychiatric diagnosis to what has been a global problem for at least the last 2,000 years.

There are three main kinds of symptoms characteristic of PTSD:

1) Re-experiencing Symptoms. People often re-peatedly experience flashbacks, during which they may have heart palpitations or sweating. The latter symptoms are signs of fight-or-flight, sympathetic nervous system activation. Sights, sounds, and smells can trigger a flashback. So can words, ob-jects, people or situations that remind the person of the initial trauma. In addition to flashbacks, nightmares and frightening thoughts are often part of this re-experiencing.

2) Avoidance. Those with PTSD tend to stay away from people, places, and things that re-awaken memories of trauma. If you’ve been in a bad car accident, there is a good chance that you became afraid to drive or even be in a car. People may lose interest in activities that used to be enjoyable. They may have trouble remembering the trauma. Their world starts to close in on them, and their home is the only place they want to be. Part of avoidance is a feeling of numbness. The main mechanism of PTSD is the freeze response. Years after a trauma an individual may feel numb, emotionally paralyzed, and disconnected (or dissociated) from Self, others, Nature, and God. These are signs of the freeze response, the biology that underlies PTSD.

3) Hyper-arousal. These symptoms include being tense or edgy, having angry outbursts, feeling suspicious, and being easily startled. While flashbacks come and go, hyper-arousal is a constant state. The individual is on guard, scanning his environment for potential danger.

PTSD symptoms usually begin within 3 months of the trauma, but the onset of symptoms can be years later. I worked with a Gulf War Veteran who began to suffer with PTSD two years after leaving the military. He was experiencing anxiety, panic, and flashbacks. There was a certain kind of siren (police car, etc.) that sounded similar to the sound of scud missiles

In “War: A Vietnam Memoir,” (Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine; 1999) Dossey writes, “1969. I reach the remote outpost in time to see the crew of the disabled armored per-sonnel carrier (APC) walking away from it. They are sullen and splattered with blood. I notice that the tank-like vehicle has a hole in its side, made by an RPG, a rocket-propelled grenade. Where did all the blood come from? I climb atop the APC, drop down through the open hatch into the claustrophobic cham-ber, and find myself sitting next to a young soldier. He has no head. I peer into the base of his skull, an empty, bone-white bowl that previously contained a brain. Looking around, I see

I am sincerely committed to proceeding in the most conscious, considerate, caring, and supportive way possible.I live in San Diego county. I seek a healthy, positive woman to be a Traditional Surrogate Mom and bear a child naturally, free of chemicals. Willing to pay good amount (also including extra for healthy food & supplements/herbs, optional midwives, massage, etc. + more if willing to do any breastfeeding). You can choose to be completely non-involved after birth to being involved, at any future time and to whatever amount you wish, as the surrogate mom or separate parent up to co-custody. I would retain legal parenthood/primary physical custody. Regardless of surrogate mom’s optional involvement after birth from none to co, I would be legally 100% economically responsible. I certainly am open to the child having more than one source of love, nurturement, and being cherished.I am sincere, tested very healthy in all aspects, holistic, deeply caring, love kids, have time, commitment, heartfelt appreciation, and resources. I am a heterosexual man (not that gender preference should matter), who wants to have a genetic child and who cares greatly. I am a giving person, who rarely asks for anything, and would honor this as the ultimate blessing, privilege, & assistance. I would be very supportive of as natural a pregnancy as possible. That would include a healthy lifestyle and as natural childbirth as the surrogate mother is comfortable with - i.e. midwives, your significant other (and family) if you have one, myself, anyone else important to you, and with conscious doctor/hospital as back-up. Regarding a healthy lifestyle: I could be extra supportive there as I have therapeutically worked with many pregnant women and post-partum families – including with nutrition, herbs, massage therapies, and other natural therapiesAgain, there are many areas of pregnancy that I can be extra helpful. I am committed to doing this in the most con-scious, considerate, supportive way possible both for you and to bring another loving, fulfilling soul and spirit into full being!! I would love to have one or two genetic children to love, nurture, & care for. Thank you for your consideration of becoming a surrogate angel. Although many studies have been performed on the benefits of alternative modalities such as home-opathy, and energetic and natural medicines, the

conventional medical system and medical schools have been slow to adopt, integrate, and train medical doctors in these complementary therapies and approaches to healing. The primary argument that has been given is the lack of scientific basis and scientific explanation for how and why these modalities work.

Science defines the premise upon which our understand-ing of reality is based. The mainstream in health care has declared that conventional Western medicine is the only scientific medicine. Our current medical system is based upon a materialistic model incorporating Darwinist theories

The tree of medicine must be transplanted into a new soil, where its roots can deepen and intertwine to reach a more complex source of healing knowledge and bring together all traditions of healing, ancient and modern.

A renaissance in medical education is presented in this book through the elaboration of a new university curricu-lum combining programs in both natural and conventional medicine, enabling us to tap into infinite fields of healing and broadening the frontiers of our perception of human reality.

The concepts of Creative Integrative Medicine, such as those that I have presented in this book, will be the trigger for a health-care revolution as they continue to be implemented.

Dr. Paul Drouin is a Canadian MD, Homeopath, Acupunctur-ist, Doctor of Natural Medicine, and Professor of Integrative Medicine with more than twenty years’ experience as a Family Doctor who has devoted thirty years to exploring traditional and alternative methods of curative, preventive, and Integrative Medicine. He is the Founder and President of the International Quantum University for Integrative Medicine (IQUIM) and host of the annual World Congress of Quantum Medicine and the new online World Summit of Integrative Medicine premiering in October 2015.

of evolution, Newtonian physics, chemistry, and physical (elementary particle level) anatomy, and physiology. How-ever, through explorations and observations of the behavior of particles at the subatomic level, science has continued to evolve. Fifty years ago, quantum physics emerged as a new scientific standard and model for understanding reality and has revolutionized our society on many levels, spark-ing discussion of science vs. spirituality/consciousness and transforming the core of our society.

In my own practice, I saw for myself how effective an integrative approach to medicine could be and began search-ing for scientific proof of why these modalities worked. I discovered the explanation through the science of quantum physics, which I believe can serve as the new scientific foun-

dation for a truly integrative medicine, one which combines both Western and alternative medicine systems based on a platform of understanding of the new scientific reality as defined by quantum physics.

The curriculum I’ve developed for holistic, natural, and integrative medicine at Quantum University already incor-porates this paradigm of understanding reality based on the science of quantum physics and how it can be applied to healing. It is my hope that other medical universities will soon follow. It is also my hope that my book, Creative Integrative Medicine, serves to inspire health-care practitioners, the general public, and anyone having to deal with health issues.

My book is a story about my own journey as a medical doctor toward creative integrative medicine. A family tragedy, the loss of my youngest brother at the age of 18 from an osteosarcoma of the skull, triggered my interest in studying medicine. Unsatisfied with the model of healing I encountered in medical school, I explored many other models of medicine that eventually led me to practice what is now called Integra-tive Medicine. I soon realized that for these complementary medicines to be accepted and integrated into our health-care system, they must be scientifically recognized and become part of the curriculum in medical schools.

Redefining a form of medicine based on the new scien-tific model of understanding of the universe according to quantum physics will provide not only the key to solving the current health-care crisis, but will also lead to a new vision of integrative health care based not on disease but on the full potentiality of the individual. Our understanding of the human body will expand to include the body's subtle energy systems and their mental and emotional connections to the physical body. How the mind works will be explored from a non-dualistic viewpoint, compared to the dualistic philoso-phy used today, which will open the door to creative new approaches to healing that have the opportunity to solve problems still unresolved by conventional medicine, spe-cifically in the areas of chronic and degenerative diseases.

Silence – The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noiseby Thich Nhat Hanh

One of the world's most beloved teachers and Zen masters shares a profound, concise, and practical

guide to understanding and developing our most powerful inner resource—silence—to help us find happiness, purpose, and peace.

We spend a lot of our lives searching for happiness, running from one thing to another, worrying about the past and being anxious about the future. All the while the world around us is overflowing with the wonder and contentment we seek. This beauty calls to us every day, yet we rarely are in the position to listen. If we don't have silence in ourselves, if our minds and our bodies are full of noise, we can't hear beauty's call.

In Silence, Thich Nhat Hanh guides us on a path to cultivate the calm within ourselves and experience the profound power of quiet amid our noisy everyday lives. The gift of silence doesn't require hours upon hours of solitary meditation or an existing practice of

any kind. With mindfulness comes stillness—and the silence we need to come back to ourselves and discover who we are and what we truly want, the keys to happiness and well-being. Combining powerful stories, timeless wisdom, and simple mindfulness techniques, Thich Nhat Hanh shows us that silence is at the heart of the happiness we seek.

To be alive is a miracle. Beauty calls to us every day, yet we rarely are in the position to listen. To hear the call of beauty and respond to it, we need silence. Through careful breath-ing and mindfulness techniques he teaches us how to become truly present in the mo-ment, to recognize the beauty surrounding us, and to find harmony.

Do you have a good connection with your inner child? Your inner child is the open, vulnerable part of you that responds with unabashed delight and despair to life. As an adult you can suppress those unguarded responses, but no matter how old you are your inner child is still operating at some unconscious/subconscious level. More importantly, if your inner child isn’t happy, you won’t be happy either. What’s challenging is that you are the first to know what your inner child needs and the only one who can reliably take care of her/him.

Here’s the tip. First, notice how you feel about this notion of having an inner child. If it seems shameful, childish and/or “un-evolved” you may need help letting go of your judgments before you can establish any relationship. If/when you’re ready; locate a picture (real or imaginal) of yourself as a child. See how you feel about her/him. You may discover more judgments. No blame.

Seek tender support for opening your heart to this precious little one inside. When you do feel love and appreciation for her/him, don’t be surprised if she/he doesn’t. If you haven’t been in contact previously, this may take some time. Look into her/his eyes and let her/him know you are there. Tell her/him you’ll wait as long as it takes to hear how she/he feels, what she/he needs because you want to do your best to take care of her/him. Breathe. Watch your inner child begin to warm and trust you. Slow down. Feel this connection and new alignment. It will change your life.

Watch as the calmness spreads just by bring-ing attention to your body. If you still can’t settle down, seek professional evaluation for food allergies, over medication, or other physical/emotional issues.

Remember, making time for idleness increases not only your joie de vivre, but paradoxically also increases produc-tivity. Don’t just do something, sit there! © Penelope Young Andrade LCSW, 858-481-5752, EmotionalMedicine Rx.com, [email protected], Twitter @EmotionalRx

Are you afraid of idleness? Like many, you may feel most comfortable when you’re being productive. That’s okay

as long as you balance purposeful action with directionless rest. Unfortunately the notion that the devil lurks in idleness has a big grip on our culture and psyche. Even the word idle may send shivers down your industrialized-work-ethic spine. The problem is the kind of rest your nervous system needs and creative mind requires is exactly the kind that lollygag-ging and wool gathering offer. Down time means spacious time at home, in the tub, in nature, listening to music, reading novels—even museum/gallery crawls or meditation will do – as long as they’re aimless. (No screens!)

Here’s the tip: If you already know that you need more time for just ‘being’, see if you’re ready to make some chang-es. If yes, start with just 5 minutes. Make a cup of herbal tea.

the year with a new TLC, and because “something” pulled us to be out this month, here we are with a December issue.

There were several factors—and a lot of energy—that made that possible. I mentioned new ads that needed to run in December, but there were also our current and ongoing advertisers who quickly embraced the idea and were happy to hear we were printing.

More than anything, at least on this level of existence that we usually participate with, what allowed us to come out were some great people—some new and some who’ve been around for a while—who helped get this issue out, are working on our expansion, or both.

This month I want to thank Tim Britain, whom I often refer to as our graphics guy. Tim and I are starting year 26 together, and his contributions far exceed being our “graphics guy.”

He’s designed and redesigned the magazine both in print and online; he designs a lot of the ads in the magazine; he’s designed the cover, off and on over the years; added his design skills to special projects; gives me computer advice; and even though it’s not part of his job description, he won’t allow himself to ignore it when he sees the language grossly misused and he edits.

He approaches his “duties” with the magazine in a way that the volunteer might. When I say that, I think of some environments that I have been in that used both employed people and unpaid volunteers.

I remember one instance when someone said, “You can always tell who the volunteers are. They are the ones who are willing to do things you can’t pay people enough money to do—and are willing to do it because of their commitment.”

from the publisher from page 4 Their passion to contribute and support whatever it is, and what they get from doing it seems to far outweigh and exceed the monetary compensation.

He is defi nitely underpaid; but then again, perhaps the idea that he is refl ects our accepted societal belief about what compensation means and how we should be compensated. Wouldn’t it be something if everyone in the work force op-erated in a similar way? We do all need money, of course. What I’m looking at is that to participate primarily because it’s something you want to see in the world is not where ev-eryone comes from.

I’ve most likely forgotten something that he contributes, but you can see he’s someone I can talk to, he’s a great friend and partner in producing TLC. You know that because the pressure of deadlines has gotten to both of us at times, but we adjust and keep moving. Thank you, Tim!

In addition to his support, what’s been in the works the past several months is that several new people who appear to share that commitment and approach want to add their talents and passion to expanding TLC too. Hard to compare to 26 years of commitment, but the passion is obvious and welcome.

There are some things I’ve wanted to put in place for a while, and we’re receiving a surge of energy to do them. More accurately I can say that we’ll discover exactly what that looks like and where TLC is taking us as it reveals itself to us.

You’ll hear more about these new contributors and see some of the results of their efforts next issue. Some may not be obvious, and some changes will come later.

If you are wondering how are things going—It’s pretty amazing, thank you.

Good Connection with Your Inner Child

Between mercury poisoning, overfishing and the en-vironmental impacts of fish farms or “aquaculture,” some might expect to see a “Proceed with Caution”

sign above seafood counters soon. Others contend that fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet, provid-ing high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends eating up to 12 ounces of fish and shellfish per week, but only if they are “lower in mercury.”

Mercury can be released into the air through industrial pollution and can accumulate in streams and oceans. The FDA warns that if you regularly eat types of fish that are high in mercury, it can accumulate in your blood stream. They add that mercury is removed from the body naturally, but it may take over a year for levels to drop significantly. For this reason, women trying to become pregnant should avoid eat-ing high-in-mercury fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, and gravitate toward low-in-mercury shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s “Super Green List,” fish that are low in mercury and also good sources of especially healthy “long-chain” omega-3 fatty acids include Atlantic mackerel from Canada and the U.S., freshwater Coho salmon from the U.S., wild-caught Pacific sardines and Alaskan wild-caught salmon (fresh or canned).

Of course, it’s possible to obtain long-chain omega-3s without eating fish. Ovega-3s supplement is derived from a strain of algae that naturally produces high amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the healthiest omega-3s. Although most people think fish are the original source of DHA and EPA, these omega-3s actually come from the algae lower in the food chain.

“When salmon farming began in North America, farmers discovered that without fish oil in their diet, farmed salmon did not contain salmon oil in their tissues,” says Udo Eras-mus, Ph.D., author of Fats that Heal-Fats that Kill. “Fish get their ‘fish oil’ from the foods they eat. When we trace these supplement oils back to their origin, we find that the oils we call ‘fish oils’ are actually made by plants at the bottom of the food chain. One-celled red-brown algae makes fish oils. Fish oils are actually plant-based products.”

Algae and other plant-based omega fatty acids also will not deplete the ocean’s supply of fish. Industrial overfishing practices have wiped out certain types of fish before they’ve had a chance to repopulate, and unintentionally killed other marine species besides fish—known as “bycatch”—in their large nets. Upwards of one million sea turtles, for example, were estimated to have been killed as bycatch from 1990-2008, according to a report published in Conservation Letters in 2010. The transition to aquaculture, where fish are raised in confined quarters (like the “factory farming” of pigs, cows and chickens) has its own environmental burdens. According to the Mangrove Action Project, an estimated three million hectares of important coastal wetlands, including mangroves, have already been lost in order to make room for artificial shrimp ponds.

Rolfing, also known as Structural Integra-

tion, can markedly im-prove one's posture and

even quality of life. After going thru the 10-session

series of SI, some increase their height by as much as an inch, or more.

Interestingly, many report that their various aches and pains seemed to have vanished. Structural Integration was founded by the late Ida Rolf, hence the name "Rolfing". It by can be described as a kind of holistic physical therapy that is typically performed once per week, for 10 consecutive sessions, each building on the previous treatment. The session tends to average 75 minutes in length and costs $150.

An SI practitioner acts to lengthen and reshape the various seg-ments of fascia, a connective tissue, which wraps each individual muscle fiber, muscle groups, organs, and ultimately, envelopes the entire human structure. In turn, one is able to stand more upright and experience more ease of movement. The analogy I like to make is related to having your alignment balanced at the time that you buy new tires for your car. As most of us know, in doing so, we get better gas mileage, improved performance, and an extended life for our new tires.

Once the alignment (to our body) is restored, we are then able to go about our various activities, be that of a high-level athlete, or simply

day to day living, walking, gardening or dancing, for example, no matter what our age. Once our body returns to its more ideal form, we are then balanced within the field of gravity versus spending so much of our vital energy fighting against it.

Focused Practitioner - Daniel Gilbert's health and wellness path began many years ago, as a competitive triathlete and personal trainer along with studying Pre-Med in his early college years. He then began studying holistic health and practicing Yoga, graduating from the School of Healing Arts, in Pacific Beach, as a Holistic Health Practitioner, in 1997. He states that "...because this work touched me so profoundly, I felt destined to study it myself so that I may offer this life-changing experience to others, and I've been passionate about it ever since." In 1999, Dan mentored with Ed Maupin, one of Ida Rolf's original students, at the International Professional School of Bodywork (IPSB), in Pacific Beach, where he was certified in the Rolf Method of Structural Integration.

mind with all the evidence I can find to support this worldview, which is based on the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths. Some of this evidence comes from high-quality clinical tri-als published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Some comes from the experi-ence of people whose stories have been published in other reputable books. Some evi-dence comes from the stories of people I’ve interviewed per-sonally, and other evidence is drawn from my own personal experience. In the next four chapters, I will be inviting both your cognitive mind and your intuition to consider embrac-ing these truths, so you can cement your new beliefs into a courage-cultivating worldview that makes you feel safer and braver.

When you believe the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths, you’re on your way to living a more courageous life. Once you come into right relationship with uncertainty, you’re able to face uncertainty with excite-ment and curiosity, rather than fear. When you accept the in-evitability of loss, loss can help you grow. Once you realize you’re always being guided by a Universal Intelligence that’s purposeful, rather than danger-ous, you start to trust that ev-erything’s happening for a rea-son, even if you don’t always understand why. When you really sense that we are all part of a collective consciousness, you stop feeling so cosmically lonely and start realizing we’re all connected, and this helps you become brave enough to live out your life purpose. When you shift from abiding by the Four Fearful Assumptions and start letting the Four Courage-Cultivating Truths guide your actions, you heal yourself and bless the world.

tion in Santa Fe, staying at the La Fonda Hotel. They settled in for the evening, turned on the TV…and the scene on TV was practically Dossey’s per-sonal war experience. He was mesmerized and paralyzed to change the channel. He broke down sobbing in his wife’s arms and cried throughout the entire night. When the sun came up, they walked outside and at last, the war that had lived inside Dossey was over, as decades of pain, grief, and anger were fully experienced and then released.

Deeper QuestionsApproximately 29 million

people die each year in war. It’s not clear how many were civilian “collateral” deaths. 79,450 die each day, and 3,310 per hour. 55 people die from war each minute. While PTSD is a devastating con-sequence of war, which often lasts a lifetime, we should not have to be reminded that the cause of military PTSD is war! It’s very important for us to learn about treatments for individuals with PTSD and I’ll cover that in the next article. Given that war has been part of the human condition for most of human history, we’ll examine some ideas about the underlying, non-political, causes of war. Is it part of human nature? Is it part of male psychology? What part is genetic? Are all cultures violent? Thank you for reading some challenging material in this article. War and PTSD are too huge to try to tackle solely from a psychiatric standpoint.

If you or someone you know needs help with PTSD, you can contact the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs at www.ptsd.va.gov or call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255.

I’m not trying to make PTSD sound like just another psychiatric diagnosis. War and PTSD cannot be separated.

After his return from Viet-nam, Dossey experienced flashbacks and recurrent nightmares. He developed some routines to help avoid f lashbacks. Dossey had learned that any TV program about Vietnam could trigger a flashback, so if he was chan-nel-surfing and accidentally landed on a show about Viet-nam, he would immediately change the channel. Dossey would not talk about his war experience, wouldn’t read, or watch movies about it.

simply say that part was up to the gods to determine—not something for them to worry about. Besides, what could go wrong? If the "worst" happens they die and go to heaven. They are portrayed as fully having faith in those ideas.

I wonder if it's like that when we fully participate in life's battles—and do what we can. Sometimes it feels that way.

I admit that this is an odd arena to learn from, but it's well presented and different from what you might expect.

The ThreatAs I said, it's full of battles—

and truly, aren't we all just a little tired of news and mov-ies about war, battles, blood, bombs and terrorism? And hearing, too, that it's "Just around the corner and coming our way!"?

There are obvious exam-ples of violence in our society that may be ours to do some-thing about. When it comes to ISIS however, don't we have to exaggerate the threat a bit to turn it into a personal threat?

This is not a promo for the CA lottery, but aren't the odds of winning the lotto more likely than being attacked by ISIS? Or being personally involved if they did?

Who gains when we react?

What's probably becoming clear to many of us these days is that the person—or media—telling us to beware just may have an agenda that benefits them when we listen and jerk to their recommended action.

When you look at war and terrorism, we've had enough recent experience to know the results of our participation aren't really predictable and usually exaggerated.

When it comes to ISIS, for instance, instead of hearing about what we could poten-

It interested me because I knew I had a grandfather whose parents came from Nor-way, so I figured I was about 25% Scandinavian, or as they call them, Norsemen or men from the north. I knew very little of European history and noth-ing really about Norway. I also knew I was about one-quarter English and learning some history about my ancestors interested me.

Many of us have heard that the Vikings believed that if they died in battle, putting up the good fight, they would go to heaven or the Halls of Valhalla. They had the reputation of be-ing fearless in battle.

Add to that the fact that they ate more protein/fish than most Europeans and were much larger than those they raided—they were feared.

What I didn't expect to hear or appreciate was their phi-losophy about their gods. What you hear in the show, over and over, is, "that's in the hands of the gods."

When one leader wanted to take a riskier route and raid new, unknown territories almost everyone was excited and wanted to go. There were a few that wanted to stick to the known path, but most viewed it as an adventure that they would fully participate in. Would it work? No need to worry about that part of it—the gods would decide that.

Whether they were taking a risk in battle or life, the domi-nant philosophy in the program showed that their success was not something they could know or control.

They would separate out what they could not control and

Stop searching outside yourself for love, you are looking in all the wrong places. Love starts, continues and lasts when you can love yourself from within.

How can you achieve this ‘love’ I speak of? Start with forgiveness. Forgive yourself for anything and everything that has happened to you up until this point, and from this point forward. You can’t control outside circumstances, but you can control the way you react. You made mistakes, recognize them, own them and move forward. This is how you grow. Others may have hurt you or let you down, remind yourself they have their own issues they have to deal with, and how they react is not always about you. Forgiveness is so powerful, and necessary to move forward providing you with a strong foundation.

Let go of ego and let love pour inside you. Look in the mirror, see that person standing there, your exterior is a body wrap, it’s not who you are! You are a pre-

cious one-of-a-kind spirit. Who you are, is within you. When you own who you are within, everything else illuminates – yes even your exterior. Ego holds you back, stop judging yourself, and allowing others to do the same. Really see yourself for who you are; kind, loving, generous, an appreciative and caring soul who shines light wherever you go. Connect with your spirit, see beyond your shell, and you will exude a confidence that can only be contagious to those who are privileged enough to cross your path.

Loving yourself is not selfish, don’t ever let your brain digest that concept. It is necessary to love yourself, you can’t hear that enough. To fully love another human being you must first whole heart-edly accept yourself, the whole package – top to bottom, inside and out. Then, and then only can you understand how to love. You truly are all you need!

tially lose by not engaging, wouldn't it be refreshing to hear more about who would gain if we did go to war. Who gains if we send troops? Who makes money? Who gains power?

One obvious place is the media, the impartial ones who keep us tuned in and on the edge of our seats, as their ratings and income increase.

What actions can we take? There are some actions we could take. For the most part, it's

doing the opposite of what people are saying we should do, but they are proactive steps.

We know by now that the last thing that most people want in the Middle East is having US troops in their country. Don't send troops.

We know that no matter how long we spend time in a country, once we leave the whole game shifts and they then decide what they want—no matter how we trained them or how much we led them. So don't lead and don't train. Any doubt we trained some of the ISIS troops?

We've known for a long time it has not mattered to many Mus-lims that American infidels—that's most of us—have been targets of Muslim terrorists, now that it's clear to them that ISIS is willing to kill anyone—including Muslims—and that no body is safe. Why

not let that idea sink in for a while? Why not let them realize that they are the ones better able to make changes than we are?

Break the cycle of addiction. Don't allow US oil companies to send people and resources to get cheap oil from Middle Eastern countries and then expect US troops to protect them or defend resources that aren't ours in the first place—especially when those companies don't pay taxes on overseas profits. Or make them take their own armies for protection.

Eliminate the threat to us by removing those companies so we don't have to protect "American interests."

Don't put our citizens at risk. Don't make us/US targets. It might also be a good idea not to send missionaries.

If it doesn't look like something we can control—why rush in? Why not avoid it? We tried it one way and ISIS is the result. Why not give those who live with it—whom it affects the most—the chance to fix their problem?

Can't we find better entertainment than ISIS?Have a good month,

“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

1) Declutter Your Mind – Medi-

tation is a great way to help relax and de-

stress the mind. Some-times we have so much

going on that we forget to stop and go within. Your intuition has a lot

of great insights. Try listening every once in a while. Then start to quiet the mind where you begin to eventually hear nothing.

2) Declutter Your Space – The condition of the area in which you live usually reflects your personality type or your mental state. It may be a messy drawer in your night stand, the cluttered closet or even your purse so full of stuff that you cannot find your keys. Sound familiar? Being organized can give you a sense of structure. This will promote a feeling of being “together” and help you stay on track. Get rid of things you no longer need and make room for the new…while being tidy of course.

3) Declutter Your Relationships –An ancient fable states, “You are only as good as the company that you keep.” In that case, why do we allow people to remain a toxic influ-

ence in our lives? We are all guilty of people pleasing to some extent. There comes a time where you reach that point of no longer allowing drama or negativity to taint friendships. Life is too short. Let go of people (places and things) that no longer serve your higher good.

4) Declutter Your Goals – Now that we are into the New Year, resolutions have become either commitments or they no longer exist. It is such a busy world we live in that our senses are literally overloaded, at work and home. We have schedules to balance and appointments to man-age. Each day we have a new agenda thrown at us. It is important to prioritize and focus on your true intentions. What would you like to manifest? First, Second, Third…

5) Declutter Your Energy – Regardless if you be-lieve in chakras, reiki, or any form of spirituality... energy is very real, E=mc2. It is amazing what the field of quantum mechanics and neuroscience are now discovering. This actually is not a new subject at all. Newton, Aristotle, and Socrates explored it. Ancient cultures lived by it, knowing it is the most powerful force known to mankind. Chi, or energy life force, can either harm or heal. Look into making sure you are balanced in body, mind, and soul (spirit or energy).
