The weather is finally starting to feel like spring and now is a great time to get out
with your tot and enjoy outdoor play before the harsh summer limits how much
time you can be outside! Most of the time we think of outdoor
activities in terms of motor skills: running, climbing, picking up bugs
and flowers. But there is a whole new dimension that you can focus on
to enrich your experience in the open air . . . Sound! Just think of all the sounds
you can focus on. Is that an airplane? Do you hear that bird? Listen! Those
children sound like they are playing tag. Can you hear that bug? Helping your little one focus on what they
hear helps develop language skills, problem solving, creativity and imagination. Wanna take it up a notch?
Try having your older toddler close their eyes and tell you what they hear. Just beware! That might be the ice
cream truck off in the distance! And if you babe guesses it correctly, you just might have to pay up.

Water-wise Gardening Workshops March 8 (10-11am) Raised Beds & Gardening

N ow that it is starting to warm up a bit, how about a nature walk with your toddler? Just wrap some
masking or duct tape around your child’s wrist with the sticky side out. Then help him/her select little
flowers, leaves, small pebbles, etc., to stick to the outside of the tape. Be sure and say lots of names of things
to help your child learn new words. When you get home from your walk, just snip the tape off and stick it
inside a baggie. Your proud babe can show grandpa and grandma all of the pretty spring items that he/she
has collected.
Recently Craig Roberts, LCSW, met with
some of our parents to share some ideas
for strong, healthy partnerships. These
were 5 suggestions:
1) Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Much of the
unhappiness in couples comes from wanting or
expecting more. Happy couples notice and appreciate the good that they have right now, today. When they
come home from work and the house is messy, instead of saying “Couldn’t you get the house clean?” they
say, “Thank you so much for watching our kids and keeping them safe and feeding and caring for them. That
means a lot to me.” Expecting something that we don’t have makes us feel frustrated, but enjoying what we
do have makes us feel more satisfied.
2) Use the “Five to One” Rule. If you feel the need to sort out a problem or ask your spouse to change,
make sure that there are at least five positive statements to counteract the negative energy of the request
to change. It’s best if the request (not a criticism) is tucked in the middle, with positive comments on both
sides. Like this: “You are such a hard worker for our family. That’s such a good example to our children. I
know when you get back from work you are tired and you deserve a good rest. But our children love you so
much. They want to play with you, because you are important to them. Could you take some time with
them?”
3) Keep Calm. When our emotions get heightened, the thinking part of our brain doesn’t work as well, and
we struggle to avoid saying and doing things we might regret. No one else can climb into our bodies and
change our feelings, so it is up to us to take responsibility to control ourselves and to keep calm. Try some
of these ideas: a) think, “This is just a little problem that I will probably forget about next week. It’s not
worth getting upset about.” b) take five or more slow breaths. Breathe in through the nose slowly, and then
exhale through pursed lips slowly. Your body will relax. c) get some exercise. It will help change your
feelings.
4) Express Your Love in Words and Actions. Say “I love you”, write a note, bring a flower, give a kiss—there
are thousands of ways to show your love. If you are having trouble finding a good attitude about doing a
task, remember that you are doing it for love. Say, “Do you know why I’m going to work today? Because
you are worth it.” “Do you know why I’m doing the dishes? Because you matter to me.”
5) Take Time Alone With Your Spouse. Share your thoughts and feelings, and listen respectfully to his/her
thoughts and feelings. Ten minutes of really sharing your heart is better than two hours watching a movie
together. But movies are good, too!

Come March, most of us are getting bored with what is available in
the produce isle that is fresh and affordable: potatoes, carrots and
onions,. We are wishing that the summer fruit season would hurry
up! But while we are waiting, there is a veggie out there that is
abundant, reasonably priced and super healthy that you might not
have given a try before- kale! Just look at this. One cup of kale contains 36 calories, 5 grams of fiber,
and 15% of the daily requirement of calcium and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), 40% of magnesium, 180%
of vitamin A, 200% of vitamin C, and 1,020% of vitamin K. Wow! That’s a lot of good for you food!
There are a lot of ways to prepare kale that even your veggie hater will find irresistible:
Make a simple salad with a bunch of thinly sliced kale, red pepper, onion, raisins, and your
favorite salad dressing.
Braise chopped kale, apples and water chestnuts until the kale is tender. Add a splash of
balsamic vinegar.
Make kale chips by slicing kale into bite-size pieces, toss with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of
salt, and bake for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees in the oven.
Sneak it into your family’s favorite fruit smoothie. See who turns their nose up at that!
Totally fun, totally yum! And just sweet enough to tide you over until the summer fruit comes in.

parents as leaders through a variety of
activities. Each center holds a monthly parent
meeting. These parents elect representatives
to sit on the TLC-EHS Policy Council. The
Policy Council reviews all grants, policies,
candidates for hire, budgets and curricula.
Their input is vital in making sure that TLC
does not stray from providing family support
services of the highest quality. This year’s
