School Newsletter March 2013 Issue 6
What’s Happening? I would like to thank all parents and carers for their
support since I announced the news of my
departure from the school. I can now say
that my offical start date at Rosewell
has been confirmed as Monday 6 May
and accordingly, my last day at
Athelstaneford will be Friday 3 May. As yet, no
decision has been reached in terms of my
replacement and as soon as I have any information, I
will let you know.
After School Clubs Our Drama and Homework After School Clubs have
proved very successful with the
last of these clubs taking place on
18th and 19th March. Many thanks
for your undertstanding when
these clubs have had to be cancelled at short notice.
After the holidays our Bikeability Clubs will be
starting so look out for acceptance letters coming
home via pupil post.
Soft Start Next term we will be holding 2 Soft Start Sessions
which will run from 9am until 9.30am
on 16 May and 6 June. Our Session on
16 May will focus on number. The
session on 6 June will give you
another opportunity to share with your child what
they have been learning. I hope you are able to come
along and join in with your child in class.
School Blog I would like to remind you to keep checking our
school blog. The Class Teacher’s and pupils
regularly update this with what’s going on
in school, we often post items of interest
which are going on around the
community too so I’m sure you’ll agree it’s
a great information point.
Loch Insh Primary 7 will be attending cluster residential school
camp from Monday 22 April to Friday 26
April. I will be holding an information
session on Wednesday 10 April at 3.30pm
for Parents and Carers. You will find out
more about what the children will be doing at camp
and what they will need to bring. I look forward to
seeing as many of you on this date.
Marie Curie Mini Pots of Care Daffodil Tea On Tuesday 26 February the whole school took
part in raising money for Marie Curie
Nurses. The children brought in a
donation and the Nursery served them
with a drink of juice and a cake. The
children also got to take home their mini
pots of daffodils that they planted back in
October last year. We managed to raise a fabulous
£69.05 - thank you to everyone who took part.
Burke and Hare The children in Primaries 5, 6 and 7 gave us a
fantastic performance at St Marys RC
Primary School this week, what fantastic
singers and performers. I was extremely
proud of all our children’s efforts and
how they worked well with the children
from the other schools involved. A huge thank you
goes to all those who came along and supported the
children.
Learning Event – Homework Thank you to all parents and carers who attended
this event. It was an informative night
where we welcomed the opportunity for
you to give us your opinions on homework.
I plan to run a similar workshop at the
next coffee and chat session on 26 April. This work
is part of a wider consulation process that Miss
Hutchison will lead on and will allow us to produce a
framework for home work that will be agreed and
implemented in August 2013.

Comic Relief 2013
We had great fun in school on Friday 13 March
celebrating Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day.
We all dressed in red or as something
funny and raised lots of money by taking
part in various Red Nose Day activities
including a home baking stall. Thanks to your support
and generosity we raised a total of £215.76 which
included the sale of Red Noses in School. – Well done!
Class News
Nursery
In Nursery we have been learning all about the zoo
and the animals that live there.
To celebrate Mother’s Day we each made a
lovely Mother’s Day Card and present to give
to our mum’s on Mothering Sunday.
The snow came to Athelstaneford and we spent some
time outside playing in it before we all got too cold –
what fun we had
Over the past few weeks we have been preparing for
Easter – we have made cards, Easter nests,
decorated eggs and cakes and hope to have a
treasure hunt on the last day of term –
weather permitting!
P1/2
P1/2 enjoyed their visit to the museum. They liked
the story we had on the magic carpet
and found lots of interesting things to
look at and explore. We have been
working hard in writing doing lots of
different kinds of functional writing
such as leaflets, labels and invitations. We added a
shop to our museum where you could get a cup of tea
or buy a souvenir to practise our money skills. We
had fun listening to everyone talk about their
personal project and asked lots of good questions to
show how carefully we had been listening. We are
looking forward to showing the rest of the school our
boxes and projects.

A really busy term in class. In literacy we’ve been
working with a novel written by
Lari Don, an author from
Edinburgh, First Aid for Fairies
and other Fabled Beasts. It was
great to have the author visit
class last week and bring the
book to life. Our own ‘Big Book of Beasts’ are
heading home soon.
In our topic ‘Blood, Bones and Bodies’ we have
learned all about becoming unwell, safety
with medicines and choices we might have
in different dangerous situations – Less
danger next term!
P5/6/7
Over the past few weeks we have been really busy
perfecting our songs for the Burke & Hare Musical.
Our hard work paid off and everyone participated
with great confidence and enthusiasm. We have also
produced powerpoints about life in Edinburgh during
the early 19th Century
We have continued to be active through our rugby
and golf sessions. We hope that the rugby
festival and final golf session with Kate
Green, which has been postponed due to
poor weather will take place in the summer term
P7 pupils also attended the rehearsal for North
Berwick High School Music Concert as
part of a transition event. Along with
the other Cluster school they
performed ‘Sing’.
Thank you for reading our Newsletter – I hope you all have a lovely Easter break and look forward to seeing you
all back on 8 April. As ever if you have any concerns or queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
