Planting, harvesting and your fair share

One of the most critical moments in the life of a relation-ship between a customer and business arrives just after the customer’s first purchase. Most businesses assume the cus-tomer is so delighted with the product(s) or service(s) they purchased that they will rush right back whenever they need or want something else the business sells. But, unless your product / service is something so special or memorable the fact is that many customers will quickly forget you. To test this, just for kicks, ask some people around you where they got their last oil change or refrigerator or which company last did a service on their furnace. I’d be shocked if more than 50% would remember because many think of those services and products as commodities and the companies as interchangeable. Since they think they can get pretty much the same product or service for about the same price, quality, and level of service in many places (and they might be cor-rect) why should they expend the mental energy to keep your business in their mental database? It might not be important for them; it sure is important for you because, if you can attract first-time customers to come back quickly and often, your business will grow.

There is one easy, inexpensive way of impressing them to remember their purchase and where they made it. In that critical moment between purchase and forgetfulness; maybe a week or so, you can disrupt the process of forgetting and stimulate your customer’s memory cells to recall your company by sending a letter, postcard, or email. Your communication should thank them for their purchase, impress them with a little background about your company, and excite them to return with some sort of limited-time offer or bonus offer “especially for you, one of our newest customers.” Rather than passively hoping your new customer remembers you the next time they need or want what you sell, do the ac-tive thing in that critical moment between the first purchase and forgetfulness by insuring they will remember.

When there is scarcity, we worry a lot about getting our fair share—what goes to him doesn’t go to me. The harvest becomes fraught with danger and competition.

When we worry more about planting, though, sharing the harvest gets a lot less complex.

Plant enough seeds and the scarcity eases. In fact, if you plant enough, you’ll never have to think twice about the harvesting.

SSC seeking support for their Ruby Anniversary Scholarship FundraiserEach year the SSCF has an annual gala event from which all proceeds support scholarship opportunities for SSC students. With cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The SSCF is now seeking support for our Ruby Anniver-sary Scholarship Fundraiser: Our 40-year Past, Present & Future, to be held April 26th at Flossmoor Country Club. This elegant dinner-dance will feature a silent auction with approximately 250 guests. Individuals or local businesses can market themselves at this event in several ways while contributing to the important educational opportunities of local students. Tickets are also now available for $125 each. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and features an Open Bar and buffet style dinner, silent auction, dancing, and the outstanding music of The Connexion Band. The sponsorship opportunities are as follows:$2,000 Ruby Sponsor - Scholarship Naming Rights, Spon-sor Announced at the Gala, Recognition on Sponsor Board and Auction Book $1,000 Gold Sponsor - Sponsor Announced at the Gala, Recognition on Sponsor Board and Auction Book $500 Silver Sponsor - Recognition on Sponsor Board and Auction Book $300 Bronze Sponsor - Recognition on Sponsor Board and Auction Book The Foundation Staff will pick up donations for auction. Sponsorships and auction donations are 100% TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. At SSC, 90% of students fall under the low income, first generation, disabled or low income and disabled criteria. Thank you for your consideration in sup-porting these students! You may purchase tickets or make your sponsorship donation through PayPal through [email protected], or mail checks to “SSC Foundation” at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, IL, and we will mail your receipt information. For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463.
