DESCRIPTION

February was another eventful month for the RM team, with one of the many highlights being treated to a night out at the newly launched club classic night with Kiss 100’s DJ Steve Smart at RS Lounge. The music was fantastic and our feet heavily paid the price the next day!

Lucinda Rhodes

Page 11: March 2013

What first inspired your acting career? My parents massively influenced my career path, they were in the business so I grew up not really knowing any different. They have been the biggest support in my life and have always allowed me to follow my dreams and be exactly who I want to be! Oh and of course Bette Midler, I love her to pieces! Growing up in Essex and knowing the area well, where are your favourite places to go?I love Essex, people knock it but there are some beautiful places. We used to have a holiday home on Mersea Island and we went every weekend in the 6 weeks holidays. If I want to go to restaurants, I go to either Hornchurch, Brentwood or Chingford! Clubbing... well my clubbing days were back when ‘Hollywoods’ was rocking.

Last month’s issue we interviewed the amazing Jonathan Sothcott, spill the beans, what is he really like to work for?I’ve worked for Jonathan a lot and he is cool and makes me laugh. It’s nice to see film makers doing their thing.

What was your favourite part about playing Linda in ‘Fall of the Essex Boys’?I was honoured to be in the film, and playing Linda was great because she has a soft side and just wants her family, home and all she believes in to be protected. Essex boys is a classic story, and being from Essex, it was great to be a part of it as I’ve grown up on the story.

You’ve been in many productions, what is been your favourite role and why?Well that’s a hard one, I loved playing super bitch Jodie Stone in ‘Dream Team’, but I lived in South Africa whilst we shot ‘Cavegirl’, so it would have to be my role as Big sis. You’ve been in the industry now for 15 years what tips and advice would you give to aspiring actors of today?Keep your head down, stay focused and don’t take your eye off the ball. Someone told me that once and it’s stuck. But really, just work hard and keep practising and polishing your craft.

The new film you’re working on Dragonfly is set to be a big hit, tell us a little about the film and the character you play?I can’t reveal too much, but I am working with some amazing people and it’s a pleasure to work with the team that we have.

Even when you’re not in front of the camera, you’re still working on your own film production company, KandLe Entertainment, is it hard work to keep all of your projects running smoothly?Yes, it is hard and stressful, so I do chill with a glass of vino at the weekends. They say if you want something done, give it to a busy person, and I’m a firm believer in that. I absolutely love being a film producer and being behind the camera. You’ve been successful since a young age; do you feel directors respect you more as an adult?Yes, maybe or they respect me because of the past work I’ve done and the fact I’ve been around a long time. Now, I’m kind of part of the furniture! Overall what is your favourite production in TV and film and why?Hmmmmmmmmm... I’m gonna say ‘Harry and Cosh’. It was written for us by Daniel Peacock and I grew up from 15 to 20 with those guys. They are a huge part of my history.

Quick fire round Biggest guilty pleasure? Wine

Hidden talents? I’m a salsa dancer

What superpower would you like? To be invisible

Ok, so under no circumstances do we endorse the sky high white patent stilettos of the 90’s Essex Girl but

white is most definitely on trend this spring. Super-versatile, buying clothes in white means that they will last for season after season and of course

everyone knows the magical ‘dress-me-up-dress-me-down’ power of the plain white tee.

Just remember, that it’s all in the detail; chic neon or perspex jewellery is a great start, but overdoing the Fake Bake is a definite no-no! Maybe even throw in some black shoes and accessories for a touch of 60’s monochrome glam? Browse through our high street

Yes waaay too many of us (when answering honestly, anyway) have makeup that’s lurking near (if not well

within) the “danger zone.” Just like food, your makeup has an expiration date, after which point bacteria

can form, infections can occur and effectiveness can dwindle. Bottom line: you need to spring clean your

makeup – and we’re here to help.

Your Make-Up

mascara 3-6 mONths: A moist, wet environment harbours bacteria, so resist pumping the wand as this puts air into the tube forcing bacteria further into the container and dries mascara out, resulting in clumped, spider lashes.fOuNdatiON 12 mONths: As they’re not water based, powder compacts offer the longest shelf. Liquid foundations ingredients tend to separate, go lumpy and dry out quicker, resulting in an uneven finish. Lipstick aNd GLOsses: 18 months - 2 years: Lipgloss doesn’t last as long as lipsticks as we tend to pump it which can put bacteria into the product. If it’s discoloured or gloopy, invest in a couple of new products for daytime and evening.make-up Brushes: The worst culprit for harbouring dirt and bacteria, clean in soapy water every couple of weeks to make your brushes last longer and lessen the chances of you putting bacteria into your products, and onto your face.

sO, where dO YOu start?

While unopened, well-formulated and properly stored cosmetics can remain fresh for a couple of years, when products are stored in hot or humid conditions (like your bathroom) or exposed to air when opened, bacteria can form and some ingredients can degrade. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell when your products pass their prime – so it’s wise to spring clean your cosmetics.

Now, throw out anything that has lost its lid, especially lipstick. Discard anything that has an odd smell, it will be off. Throw out anything that is past its open jar date. See your product for that information. If you can’t see it on your make-up or it has worn off check out the guide.

wellbeing

Yoga - striving for tranquility and calmThere are many different types of yoga to choose from, and although you may not like one form of it, you may find that another one could suit you quite well. When I first discovered yoga I didn’t like it at all; I found it to be slow and boring, but that was only one type of yoga. As I looked into the other forms that are around, I discovered that I absolutely loved a type called Kundalini.Great for: relieving stress, sleeping better, calming the mind and achieving flexibilityNot good if: you can’t sit still for 5 minutes

Bootcamp - enjoys a challenge! There are a few different types of Bootcamp. There’s the one where you are continuously shouted at, and there’s the one where you are continuously encouraged. Your relationship with authority will determine which type of Bootcamp you prefer, but try them both out and see what one you feel you get the most enjoyment out of. It’s an outdoor activity and a range of unconventional equipment such as tyres, harnesses and logs, are normally used; it will work muscles that you didn’t even know that you had!Great for: pushing yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of, being around others that want to reach their fitness goalsNot good if: you don’t like getting wet and muddy in the winter, or hot and sweaty in the summer!

Zumba - wants to have fun!Zumba is a great workout for those who just want to have fun. You may not exercise as much as you would like as you find it quite dull. Zumba is a great way to ‘ditch the workout and join the party’. You can get together with the girls, have a laugh and work up a sweat without even realising! “Participants don’t necessarily

have to have rhythm or be a trained dancer to follow the moves,” says Zumba instructor Tasha Edwards of Tasha Zumbafitness in Essex, “and it’s far from the aerobic 1 2 3 4 counts. Zumba is about ‘feeling the music’ and following the specially trained instructor.”Great for: having fun, including your friends and dancing! Not good if: you like to work out with a straight face.

Gym - prefers routineLove routine and the systematic approach? The gym can offer a great workout for those that love routine and using machinery such as treadmills, cross trainers, and weights. You can work out whatever the weather and even enjoy a sauna afterwards!Great for: targeting specific muscle groups, maintaininga routine and repetitiveness. Not good if: you don’t like being inside, using exercise equipment and repetitiveness

Team sport - likes socialising and is competitiveAre you social? A team sport is a great way to exercise if you like the thought of being in a group and want the added bonus of the social events attached to belonging to a club. Nicola Rayner of Galaxy Netball Club says “the variety and competitive factor is enough to convert even the most hardened couch potato!”Great for: being social and working out as a team. Great if you are competitive! Not good if: you prefer to work out alone and do not enjoy a bit of competition.

Doing it at home - prefers privacyThere are so many ways that you can exercise in your own home and one of the more popular options at the moment is the use of a games console such as the Wii.

My favourite way to exercise at home is to flick through the Body in Balance channel on sky and see what workouts catch my eye. From Caribbean workouts and yoga, to belly blitz and tai chi, I simply hit record on the programs that I would like to try, and when I’m ready,I’ll give them a go!Great for: being in control of exactly when you workout, trying lots of different exercises from the comfort of your own home. Not good if: you want something social and outdoors.

Something different - adrenaline junkie! An activity that I absolutely love is rock climbing. I’m not an expert at it, but once you’ve learned a few basics, you can climb until your heart’s content. It will suit anyone who loves the feel of adrenaline pumping through their body and enjoys the constant challenge of pushing themselves! You will need a climbing partner for this activity and you will need to trust them completely as they’ll be the ones in control of your ropes.Great for: feeling adrenaline racing through your veins, doing something completely different. Not good if: you are afraid of heights or can’t completely trust someone with your ropes.

Pole Fitness– absolute sauce pot!Not as easy as it looks! This exercise will work muscles in the strangest of places and leave you aching for days. Figuring out the technical aspects of each move is tricky but great fun, however be warned, you will bruise! “This isn’t just wiggling around a pole,” says Pammie of Up Yer Pole in Essex, “this is fitness specifically for body conditioning and strength training”.Great for: strengthening your core muscles and nicely toning your arms. Not good if: you’re not keen on flashing your flesh!

There are so many new and exciting ways to exercise, that simply choosing which one to try can be a challenge!from the calm and tranquility of yoga, to the adrenalin rush of rock climbing, here are a few fitness regimes thati have personally tried out.

firstly, congratulations on winning the test series. You made netball history! how did you feel once you’d known that you had won?The feeling was amazing; to beat the world number ones on our home soil was so special and something that I’ll always remember. how does it feel to go out on court and represent your country? To represent my country is an honour. Every time I wear the red dress, I feel very privileged and extremely lucky.

what techniques do you use to avoid feeling intimidated when playing against some of the best players in the world? It’s not so much a technique, but more of a reminder that I’ve done all of the hard work, all of the training, and that I can match these players on the netball court. what do you think are the most important aspects of a player’s role during a game?In my role as a player on court, and especially as a GS (goal shooter), an important aspect is to be clinical and concise at the times when I’m under the most pressure. Keeping a clear mind and finishing team processes i.e. scoring at the end of a team move through court.

Exclusive Interview

JO HARTENNetball is one of the most played women’s sports in the country and has the fastest growing participation levels of any sport, so when the England netball team beat World champions Australia three matches to nothing in this year’s test series, it was surprising to hear that the coverage that they received can only be described as minimal.

Recognised as one of the finest attackers in the world for her nerves of steel and incredible accuracy, Essex born star Jo Harten has accumulated 43 international caps despite being only 23 years old, and still found the time to answera few questions on England’s historic win and her tactics for staying cool on court.

Page 31: March 2013

exclusive interview

what thoughts go through your mind when you’re winning or losing? No matter if I’m winning or losing, the same thought process goes through my mind - I need to get the ball and score goals, and then repeat this process!

what is the most important thing for a player to remember when they’re on court? That you’re playing for the name on the front of the dress, not the name on the back. Everything we do on court is for the good of the team and you have a responsibility to perform for everyone on the team.

what do you think about the lack of netball and women playing sport in general on main stream television? There aren’t any quick solutions to highlight netball and women’s sport within the media and on mainstream television, but a good start would be for more articles in print media, and then hopefully one day progressing to an equal playing field with male sports that are aired on TV. However, in saying all of this - netball as a sport needs to produce more wins against the big teams and really make a great product that people want to sit down and watch week in week out.

who was your female sporting idol growing up?Dame Kelly Holmes, I read her autobiography when I was a teenager and it really showed me what determination and hard work can achieve.

if it weren’t for female role models like dame kelly holmes, do you think that you would have still gotten to where you are now? I would like to think so! Having female role models definitely helped inspire me, however, I always had my own goals and ambitions to play for England since I was a seven years old! who’s the joker in the england squad? ME!! And my trusty bestie - Serena Guthrie. Together we play pranks and give the team a few laughs!

what training tips can you give to aspiring netball players? any super cool drills you could let us know about?I wouldn’t say super cool, but a wall can be your best friend as a netball player. Using a wall helps you practise all of the varieties of passing, and it can really help you hone your basic skills, which are vital when you’re playing in pressure matches. The good thing about a wall is that it will give you the same pass back that you gave it, good or bad! so now that you’ve beaten the best in the world, what are your next goals? My personal goal is to have a successful and consistent ANZ season over here in New Zealand. As an England team, our goal is to back up these recent wins with even more great performances ahead of commonwealth games in 2014.

To find out more about either getting back into netball or where you can go towatch upcoming games, head over to www.englandnetball.co.uk or contact yourlocal netball league.

The iconic British car maker’s new luxury GT has been sympathetically redesigned and painstakingly re-engineered to reassert its position as the world’s most beautiful, and beautifully balanced, four-seat sports car.

Aside from the extensive design and engineering improvements, the luxurious new Rapide S – which replaces the outgoing Rapide in markets worldwide – is now even more refined thanks to a range of additions to the four-seater’s sumptuous interior.

Still instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin, of course, the new Rapide S now boasts an imposing and assertive new ‘face’, created by virtue of the impressive and striking new full grille.

Engineered to excelChanges under the new Rapide’s skin are comprehensive, with a version of the new AM11 naturally-aspirated 6.0-litre V12 powerplant delivering unprecedented power and improved in-gear acceleration.

Power from the new engine jumps significantly versus that of its predecessor: up by 17% or a massive 81 PS from 477 PS at 6,000 rpm to a now very substantial 558 PS at 6,750 rpm. Peak torque increases too, up from 600 Nm to 620 Nm at 5,000 rpm. Meanwhile an even more marked improvement in torque occurs lower down the rev range, as pulling power rises by more than 40 Nm between idle and 4,000 rpm with an additional 50 Nm available at 2,500 rpm.

Naturally, increases in power and torque lead to even swifter performance as befits a four-door sports car. New Rapide S shaves 0.3 seconds off its 0-62 mph time, which drops from the 5.2 seconds of the current car to just 4.9 seconds for the new model. Top speed climbs, meanwhile, to 190 mph.

The engine is now even more efficient, too. Despite the very significant increase in peak power and torque, the Rapide S is appreciably more economical than before. CO2 emissions drop by seven per cent – from 355 g/km to 332 g/km – while fuel economy now stands at 19.9 mpg on the official EU combined cycle.

The carefully conceived engineering changes continue as the new Rapide now offers even sharper agility and even quicker responses to driver input. As would be expected of a modern Aston Martin, handcrafting is the order of the day in the Rapide S with the standard-fit pure glass transmission selector switches in the centre console one small yet important example of the truly authentic, bespoke, nature of the car’s cabin.

However those with a desire for a more sporting ambience in their sports car will not be disappointed. Optional duotone perforated red and black leather makes its Aston Martin debut here – delivering a captivating visual combination that’s unique to the new Rapide S.

Luxury is enhanced by the removal of extraneous ‘noise’ and the enhancement of desirable ‘sound’ – a fine distinction but one that helps the new car deliver an aural experience like no other. Improved NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) characteristics are derived from the likes of the new bonnet lining and revised windscreen cowl.

Flexibility comes in the form of four seats – the rearmost two capable of accommodating adults in a uniquely sporting setting – while at the touch of a button the individual back seats fold down to almost triple the Aston Martin’s load space.Options to further enhance the luxurious look and feel of the Rapide S include, subject to market, a reversing camera and twin screen rear seat entertainment system with wireless headphones, remote control and six-disc DVD changer.

Those seeking the ultimate in luxury and personalisation can also consider the ‘Q by Aston Martin’ service which offers uniquely-tailored options for individualisation. The Q service focuses on fashioning colour and materials with limitless boundaries precisely to customer choice and specification, enabling owners to give free rein to the creativity and indulge their desire for bespoke luxury.

The new Aston Martin Rapide S will be available to order next month, prices however have not been confirmed. For more info visit your local Aston Martin dealer.

the stunning new aston Martin rapide s is making its debut with yet more luxury and even more power on offer in its quintessentially elegant four-door silhouette.

Aries (march 21st - april 20th)

Your power packed personality pushes you forward towards April giving you a zest for life and a drive to

improve your fitness levels through exercise or dieting. When your thinking is lean and mean and your figure

is trim you’ll be more than a match for anyone.

Taurus (april 21st - may 21st)

When it comes to fitness, slow and steady wins the race. Setting aside more time for solitary pursuits like

reading, writing, and gardening will be rewarding in the final days of the month. You need quiet time for your creative juices to come bubbling to the surface.

Horoscopes

Find out what Russell Grant has instorefor you...!

You radiate star power in the beginning of March. This is the perfect time to go on a first date, show off your creative work, or launch an advertising initiative. People will be very receptive to your particular brand of charm.

Lots of romantic interest will be shown at this time, and you’ll have your choice of suitors. Although all the attention is flattering, you’ll be drawn to the one who exudes experience and authority. If you’re already in a relationship,

your partner will encourage you to travel, write, or study around the 11th. Their encouragement will help you reach new heights.

Resist the urge to go on a shopping spree on the 27th, as you’ll feel instant remorse for anything you buy. Easter weekend warns against lending or borrowing money. If you’re resourceful, you can cover your bills and keep all of your friendships intact. It’s just a matter of being more mindful about how and when you spend money.

n Pisces(february 20th - march 20th)

Page 49: March 2013

49

Gemini (may 22nd - June 21st)

A jealous argument will erupt around the 27th. Your lover has a hard time dealing with your naturally

flirtatious ways. Although you have no intention of betraying your amour, their lack of trust angers you. Don’t let their jealousy stop you looking your best at

a party over Easter weekend.

Cancer (June 22nd - July 23rd)

It’s time to put an end to a co-dependent relationship. You’ve got to encourage your relative to develop

interests and friendships of their own or resentment will set in. Someone will ask you to work Easter

weekend, so prepare to refuse. You need to spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Work can wait.

Leo (July 24th - august 23rd)

The first half of March promises to be a very passionate time for you. If you’re in a relationship,

you’ll spend more time in bed than out of it.You’ve always been an extremely sensual soul; now

is the time to tap into this powerful part of your personality. By satisfying your physical desires, you’ll experience an upsurge of creative energy.

lifestyle

Capricorn(december 22nd - January 20th)

An influential friend will invite you on a trip in the

days surrounding the 11th. The change of scenery will give you confidence. Too often, you underplay your talent. Once you get out of your old routine, you’ll realise just what a hot commodity you really are.

An executive decision near the 27th won’t go your way.

Libra(september 24th - October 23rd)

You’ll be offered an impressive job on or around the 11th; helping you get paid to do something you love.

The salary may not be impressive, but it will be a steady source of income. By aligning yourself with a

powerful person, you’ll have the financial backing and practical help to become a success.

Sagittarius (November 23rd - december 21st)

If you want to move, start looking for a new place in early March. You’ll find a great place near a beautiful

body of water, provided you’re willing to be open minded. Instead of setting your heart on a particular

neighbourhood, be willing to look at properties that are a little off the beaten path. By the middle of the month you will find the perfect place, and might even be able

to negotiate a lower price.

Scorpio(October 24th - November 22nd)

A surprising love affair, engagement, or marriage will be revealed on or around the 10th. This exciting turn of events renews your faith in true love. Finding inexpensive ways to amuse yourself will be relatively easy for you. In the meantime, tell your friends you

are looking for work. Who you know is more important than what you know as May draws to a close.

Virgo(august 24th - september 23rd)

A series of passionate encounters heat up the first days of March. Your sex appeal will be red hot; use it to

seduce the object of your affection. If you’re already in a relationship, your partner will be extra attentive.

Don’t be surprised when you receive a beautiful token of your amour’s esteem. An engagement or wedding

party will be planned for the middle of March.

Aquarius (January 21st - february 19th)

The idea of going back to school is tempting, but you’re better off spending more time at home.

Your family needs you more than you realise. Easter weekend is perfect for visiting a friend wholifts your spirits. The two of you will have lots of

fun catching up on old times.

St Patricks Day 17th MarchWith St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, it seems there’s a wee bit o’ the Irish in most of us. Create your own party with some of the traditional recipes below.

recipe Of the Month

irish stew 108 calories - preparation time, 35 mins, makes 10

Ingredients1 tbsp sunflower oil200g smoked streaky bacon, preferably in one piece, skinned and cut into chunks900g stewing lamb, cut into large chunks5 medium onions, sliced5 carrots, sliced into chunks3 bay leavessmall bunch thyme100g pearl barley850ml lamb stock6 medium potatoes, cut into chunkssmall knob of butter3 spring onions, finely sliced

1. The trick with this classic one-pot is to use a cheaper cut of meat, which means you’ll skimp on price but not quality.

2. Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Heat the oil in a flame proof casserole. Sizzle the bacon for 4 mins until crisp.

3. Turn up the heat, then cook the lamb for 6 mins until brown. Remove the meats with a slotted spoon. Add the onions, carrots and herbs to the pan, then cook for about 5 mins until softened. Return the meat to the pan, stir in the pearl barley, pour over the stock, then bring to a simmer.

4. Sit the chunks of potato on top of the stew, cover, then braise in the oven, undisturbed, for about 1½ hrs until the potatoes are soft and the meat is tender.

5. The stew can now be chilled and kept in the fridge for 2 days, then reheated in a low oven or on top of the stove. Remove from the oven, dot the potatoes with butter, scatter with the spring onions and serve scooped straight from the dish.

lifestyle

1. Make the onion topping for this simple gastropub-style starter up to two days ahead

2. Heat the butter in a sauté pan, add the onions, then sprinkle over the sugar. Sweat the onions for 20 mins over a medium heat, stirring them occasionally, until sticky and golden. Add the brandy, if using, reduce down to nothing, then season to taste. This onion topping can be made 2 days ahead and kept covered.

3. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Toast the bread, spread the onions over, then top with slices of cheese. The toasts can be made up 1 hr ahead.

4. Place on a baking tray, then bake for 15 mins until bubbling and golden. Serve each piece of toast on a plate with a sprig of dressed watercress next to it. The brandy is optional - don’t buy a bottle especially for the recipe, but if you’ve got some in the cupboard, it’s definitely worth adding just a slug.

Melty Onion toasts 123 calories - preparation time 5 mins, easy

Upon arrival at RS Lounge, the facade of the building bathed in colour and light, resembling a Beach house that you would normally find on the sandy beaches of Miami, a far cry from concrete surroundings of most clubs.

We were shown to an intimate booth area where we were seated with a bottle of grey goose and a few mixers; from that moment on we knew that it was going to be a good night! Red lighting cascaded from the ceiling to the floor creating a canapé of rouge across the glamorous crowd, and as the evening went on, a dramatic lighting change to blue created a cool ambience, completely altering the mood from an intimate ambience to a funky atmosphere.

Tearing ourselves away from watching the very talented mixologists at the bar, we were drawn to the dance floor by the absolutely phenomenal music from Kiss 100s Steve Smart on the decks. The true test came when, even though the soles of our feet were near on dying, we couldn’t find a break in the music to leave the dance floor. To top it off, when Candy by Cameo sounded over the speakers and transformed the dance floor into a river of bodies moving in unison, we knew that this was a club that would become a regular for the RM team!

The overall atmosphere was one that we hadn’t experienced for a while; it was relaxed, welcoming, and clear to see that this is one of London’s finest luxury lounge bar and clubs, everyone was there to simply have a great time. The Verdict? Great music, great atmosphere and great people; go here if you want the perfect night out.

HEAVEN’S BASEMENTExclusive Interview

Page 61: March 2013

exclusive interview

Unsurprisingly, the frontman of rock band Heaven’s Basement awaken today feeling a little delicate from the night before. He soldiers on though, kindly answering all of our prying questions with honesty andgory detail: “Before we walked out on stage I went to the toilet aboutsix times”, he admits. “I was bricking it!” Even rock ‘n’ rollers get nervous it seems.

Heaven’s Basement formed back in 2008 and have since undergone multiple lineup changes in a struggle to find the right combination of passion, attitude and grit from it’s members. Aaron has been the final ingredient in achieving this, making them now a classic four-piece rock band, ready to take on the world. “We’re in good shape” he remarks, “And it’s getting better every night we play. It would be foolish to start messing with this formula. Plus it’s way more logical; you can fit four people into a taxi, but you can’t fit five!”

As a teenager Aaron spent much of his time in Essex, playing the gigging circuit of Southend and getting drunk at Mayhem nightclub. Even now, though he retreats to the Suffolk countryside after touring, he can’t resist a good night out in Southend. “I’ve got a lot of friends in Essex so it’s always good to see them and come back to my favourite little drinking spots like The Alex and The Last Post. But I’m quite a peaceful person really, and Suffolk fills that hole for me.”

On stage with Heaven’s Basement Aaron certainly doesn’t seem like a peaceful person. He stalks up and down the stage, belting the lyrics to tracks from their debut album, Filthy Empire. The band’s energy and Aaron’s stage presence, has led them to become known as a fierce live band, so it was important to them that they captured that ferocity in the album. “Recording the album was explosive! It definitely pushed us out of our comfort zone”, Aaron recalls. “We wanted to make a record with substance. Keep it raw and not overly produced. We’re renowned for our stage show so it was about putting that sound into a CD. At the end of the day, that’s what albums are supposed to be, aren’t they?”

Filthy Empire was officially released in the UK in February and has already had some great reviews. “We’re all pretty damn happy with it”, he says. “For me, track ‘Fire, Fire’ encapsulates Heaven’s Basement.

It had over 100,000 views on YouTube. That’s insane! It’s a big deal to us. I never thought my career would ever reach these highs.”

Heaven’s Basement are seemingly always on tour, but is it a constant party or does it ever get rough? “Being on the road is an emotional ride! We have our ups and downs, but that’s what being in a band is about. There’s always something that goes wrong, but it’s just a matter of looking at it and going ‘Right, how do we get ourselves out of the s**t this time?!’ ha ha! We are probably as close to Spinal Tap as it gets really!”

This summer, the band have been booked to play at Download Festival alongside the likes of Iron Maiden and Queens of the Stone Age. Though Aaron has confirmed he is feeling the nerves already, it is not their first time playing at the Donnington Park festival. “Download kindly asked us to play the Pepsi Max Stage back in 2011 for an acoustic set” he recalls, “We were expecting a few hundred people to turn up, but when we walked out there were 5000 people in that tent, and another thousand outside desperately trying to get in!

That was the best experience of my life. Now this year we’ve been invited back and it’s looking like there might be a possibility that we play the Second Stage going out to around 30,000 people! I thoroughly look forward to that”.

Along with Download, Heaven’s Basement will play countless other festivals all over the UK and Europe, and begin their tour with the Black Veil Brides next month...do they ever rest?!

For full details of tour dates and to buy tickets head to www.heavensbasement.com. Debut album Filthy Empire is out now.

“We were expecting a few hundred people to turn up, but when we walked out there were 5000 people in that tent, and another thousand outside desperately trying to get in! That was the best experience of my life”

Aaron Buchanan is the charismatic and zealous vocalist for heavy rock band Heaven’s Basement. He began his rock ‘n’ roll journey

in Southend as a teen, and today dishes the dirt about life on tour, their debut album and a nerve-racking festival appearance.

how would you describe your sound?harry: We are predominantly a punk rock band, but we all have such broad tastes in music that none of our songs really sound the same, which I love. I really believe we have a unique sound compared to the loads of bands out there today.

what are your biggest achievements so far?dom: Playing amazing venues like the o2 Academy Islington and the Relentless Garage always puts a smile on my face. We also supported one of our favorite bands, Mallory Knox, on two occasions, that waspretty awesome!

who inspires you?harry: I’m a big Beatles fan which helps me with song writing, hopefully we’ll be bigger than them soon enough!craig: Dave Grohl from Nirvana/Foo Fighters is a big one for me. They’re the first two bands I really started listening to, and he’s played in Queens of the Stone Age with a different technical style of drumming. What a man!

what’s it like being unsigned in essex?dom: It’s really hard, the local music scene is almost non exsistant, so you have to push a lot of people to come out and get down to a show. It’s a shame because there is a lot of really good bands in Essex and it has some awesome venues.

New music?sam: Our new EP Wilderness is out now, so we have been busy getting all the promotion together for that. We are currently booking up shows to promote the new EP, and hopefully a tour this summer.dom: Wilderness is probably the best six tracks we have ever written, I’m really quite proud of it.

plans for the future?dom: Keep touring, writing and recording. Keep doing what we love and hopefully pick up some good friends and meet some amazing people on the way!

Taking a quick break from working their socks off in the studio, the guys in Forever After tell us about the band they’ve formed, the music they’re making and their dream to one day be bigger than the Beatles.

What inspired you to start Annecto UK?Having worked in the Credit Card Industry for over 17 years, I saw first hand the challenges that business owners face when dealing with the advances in technology and changes in consumer spending habits.I also saw that the service that customers received from their banks was often poor and the charges were high – basically, I wanted to change all of that. I have a passion for business and a passion for people, and I believe that independent business should get the products, service and price usually reserved for large corporate businesses.

What services do Annecto provide? Our product range is growing and developing all the time, but currently, we help businesses save money on their credit and debit card processing whilst helping them grow their business by offering short term cash injections.

Why should businesses choose you over their bank? Our buying power means that we can offer cheaper rates on the card processing and better terminals that process transactions quicker. We provide short term finance to business that can’t/won’t go to their banks with funds being approved in 24 hours. The best thing about Annecto is the service that we give to our customers, we are local in Essex and our team is here to help advise our customers on any aspect of their payment and finance needs.

Women in Business Great news regarding Maria from Heavenly Beauty Salon who I wrote about previously. She has become a Finalist in the London Business Accelerator Programme, where the winner will benefit from support from Deborah Meaden of Dragons Den and £10,000 from the Business Growth Fund! Isn’t this fantastic? From a Mum on benefits, to winning accolade after accolade in less than 2 years. I’m so proud of her.

But what does this mean to you? It means, with a great idea, the right backing plus, support and BELIEVING in yourself, you can do it! Ok, so not every great idea makes it of the starting grid but equally, thousands don’t get off the blocks because of lack of self-belief.

38 years ago when my children were small, my husband wanted to buy a house, renovate it and sell it to make money. It would have meant taking out a mortgage against our own property and risking losing our home if his project didn’t succeed.I couldn’t see any further than the project failing. This idea surfaced every couple of years and still I doubted him. Oh how wrong I was. He has successfully renovated homes that we have moved into, created remarkable transformations in friends’ houses but never became a property developer.

I was a very young Mum with little self-confidence and no business acumen. There wasn’t a ‘me’ around to support or guide us and I could only see the pitfalls. As I got older and confidence grew, I realised that sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. Don’t live to regret your indecisions.

I am at the end of a telephone I can meet you and I WILL support you.
