Letter from BBOT President & CEO Paul HoldenWelcomeback spring!Looking outmy windowI see nothingbut sunshinepouring in,and it’s easyto convincemyself thatit isn’t stillfreezing coldoutside. Ofcourse the

weather can’t last – it is only March afterall, and in a few days it will be rainingagain. But what’s the Lower Mainlandwithout a little drizzle?

Here at the Burnaby Board of Tradewe are definitely feeling the energy ofthe new season. It has been a very busywinter that has seen us ring in the LunarNew Year, celebrate sustainable businessat our Environmental Forum, and evenwelcome Christy Clark for a rare visitto the BBOT by a BC Premier. Plus

Operating a business without anemployee policy manual is like playing ahockey game without rules. The absenceof guidelines and structure can result inconfusion, frustration and a few palmsto the face. Often times, particularlyin small organizations, the importanceof employee policies is overlooked andthe absence of guidelines only becomesapparent once issues arise.

our membership is growing. Burnabyhas always been a vibrant businesscommunity, and I’m proud to say thatnow more than ever businesses of alltypes and sizes are recognizing the valueand importance of coming together tofoster greater prosperity for all of us.

The Burnaby Board of Trade is alsoworking to secure the future of ourbusiness community through our newAccess program designed to developyouth leadership and prepare finalyear post-secondary students to enterthe workforce. The program, which isthe result of so much hard work overthe past several months by staff, localstudents, and our new Future LeadersCommittee, will commence in Septemberwith first enrollment beginning inApril. Participants will benefit fromcomponents such as youth focusednetworking events, workshops, andour unique “Connector” mentorshipopportunities, after which they willgraduate the program with a letter ofrecommendation. More importantly,

Rather than creating employeemanuals in response to situations in theworkplace, employers should ensure thatpolicies are implemented preemptively.Business owners who effectivelycommunicate employee policies not onlyprotect themselves, but they also signalto their staff that their organization isorganized, professional and fair.

The BBOT is pleased to partnerwith CPMmanuals to offer members analternative to the time-consuming and

Access will provide these youngprofessionals with the skills, confidenceand experience necessary to compete in atough job market, and to be successful inthe workplace.

Finally, I would just like to point outthe next major event we have coming up,our annual State of the City Luncheon. The event will take place on April 11that the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown andis the best chance for our members tohear fromMayor Derek Corrigan on CityHall’s plans for Burnaby for the comingyears.

On behalf of the Burnaby Board ofTrade, I thank you for your continuingsupport.

Sowhat exactly is a Board of Trade?I’ve been asked thisquestion a few timessince I began working

for the Burnaby Board of Trade justshort of one year ago. It’s kind of a greatquestion. After all, we’re in the businessof growing our membership and not evenour own website has a straightforwarddefinition.

There are a lot of times in life whenyou come across a term/concept/idea/word you simply can’t define. Often, you’ve heard it mentioned many timesbefore, but life’s experiences haven’tgranted you the opportunity to quitegrasp what it is. You don’t want to askfor fear of sounding dumb. If you reallyneed to know, Google and Wikipediaare terrific resources, but even theysometimes skip over the basics andjump right into the convoluted detail.Sometimes it’s nice to just get a simplestraight answer.

Board of Trade is essentially a

synonym for Chamber of Commerce. If there is any meaningful differencebetween the two, I couldn’t tell you whatit is. For some people this is a perfectlysufficient answer. They know what aChamber of Commerce is, but they’vejust never heard it referred to as Board ofTrade (or vice versa).

For the rest of you, a Board of Trade(or Chamber of Commerce) is a businessorganization made up of a membership

of local businesses in a community. Theseorganizations work to bring businessestogether to develop strong networks, torepresent the interests of the businesscommunity to local government, and to

foster economic development. They alsousually provide a range of services andbenefits to their members such as special-ized or exclusive events and workshops, and discounted rates on commonbusiness expenses. In addition theyoften provide services such as businessregistration, business name approvals, and certification of Certificates of Origin.

Boards and Chambers also existat the provincial or state level (suchas the British Columbia Chamber ofCommerce), as well as at the nationallevel (e.g. the Canadian Chamber ofCommerce). These organizations usuallywork to represent business interests tohigher levels of government and serve toadvocate on relevant legislation.

“We help businesses develop relationships in both local and international markets.”

The stunning Electronic Arts campusin Burnaby once again provided thesetting for the Burnaby Board of Trade’sEnvironmental Sustainability Forumfor Business on March 7th. The event, which was presented by BC Hydro andEncorp Pacific, and hosted by EA, offeredattendees the opportunity to discuss thebusiness case for sustainability throughinformal reception-style networkingin addition to a panel presentation andQ&A session.

This year’s panel was comprised offour speakers representing small andlarge business, education and socialenterprise. They included James Tanseyfrom UBC’s Sauder School of Businessand CEO of Offsetters; Elizabeth Sheehan

from Climate Smart; TransLink’s Directorof Corporate Sustainability, Trish Webb;and Damien Kettlewell, President ofJAK Group (including Burnaby’s GreatBear Pub and Liquor Store). Facilitat-ing the discussion was Coro Strandberg,Principal of Strandberg Consulting, andmember of the Burnaby Board of Trade’sEnvironmental Sustainability Committee.

Throughout the evening each of thepanel members delivered an inspiringoverview of their corporate objectivesand positive results. Sheehan noted thatone of Climate Smarts clients managedto save $17,000 simply by turning offthe lights at night. At Translink, heavyinvestment in hybrid electric/diesel busesand an electric trolley system has had agreat impact on lowering the company’scarbon footprint, according to Webb.

Perhaps one on the most interest-

ing moments of the discussion wasKettlewell’s description of how smallsustainable changes have influenced hisbusiness. In addition to the cost savingsafforded by LED lighting and refrigera-tion timers, he noted the value of beingseen as a responsible business for attract-ing new customers. “We wanted to attracta younger demographic, and we’ve hadsome success doing that,” said Kettlewell.“It’s also been good for staff retention. In our recruitment efforts a lot of peoplehave expressed interest in our sustainablecommitments when asked why they wantto work for us.”

Businesses interested in reducingtheir environmental impact while savingmoney should look out for the BurnabyBoard of Trade’s new EnvironmentalPledge program expected to be launchedin the coming months.
