Lent is the season of the church year that leads up to Easter. Be-ginning on Ash Wednesday, it lasts forty days, not counting Sun-days. It commemorates the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting and praying.

The season of Lent is an opportunity for us to get our lives more in tune with God’s expectations. The invi-tation that comes to us in the service of worship for Ash Wednesday is “to observe a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s Holy Word.” The ashes that we receive on Ash Wednesday are a sign of our repentance—”Repent, and believe the gospel”—and a reminder of our mortal nature—“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Ash Wednesday this year was much different for me. Rather than getting ready for the service that even-ing—preparing the order of worship, checking on the bulletins, locating the ashes, and so forth—I was in Wichita, receiving the needed treatment to get my heart back in rhythm.

In my case, the issue was “atrial fibrillation.” This is “an irregular and often rapid heart rate that commonly causes poor blood flow to the body.” While not life-threatening, the situation does need to be treated so that the heart again beats in its proper rhythm.

When I discovered that I had inadvertently scheduled this procedure on Ash Wednesday, I was upset with myself. I felt like it was my responsibility to take care of the service. It was my job to get everything done. But then, members of the church staff and the Staff Parish Relations Committee began to help me see things more clearly.

In retrospect, perhaps Ash Wednesday was precisely the right day to have this procedure done. After all, Lent is a time to get our lives “more in tune with God’s expectations.” It is a time to get the rhythms of our life in harmony with God. Sometimes that can be done easily. Other times it requires intervention.

I am grateful for the skill and care of those who cared for me in Wichita. I am grateful for a congregation that cares. I am grateful for a staff and a Staff Parish Relations Committee that seeks my best interests. I am grateful for God who sustains and strengthens us at all times! Grace and Peace, Mark Conard

GOD’S MEDICAID! As I was preaching Matthew at Wesley Towers this week, I had an "Aha moment" and was able to share that with my children (the Towers residents). Jesus states in Matthew 16:24 that we must deny ourselves

and take up our crosses to follow Him. He basically goes on to say that unless we give up "everything" of this world – possessions, wealth, power – we are not following His way. This sounds like a mighty big request and it reminded me of when my family and I decided my Mother must go on Medicaid. I fought the idea tooth and nail but there was just no other way. After years of spending $6,000.00 a month in the rest home, she had very little left…except the gas wells that my Father had left to her and a few insurance policies (not enough to meet the $6,000 a month, but it was helpful). However, if Mother was to receive Medicaid benefits, she had to give up every single asset she possessed. EVERYTHING except $60.00 a month must be surrendered. This was a very sad time for our family and for my Mom. But, she was well taken care of and lived in a beautiful environment! To have comfort and peace, to "take up her cross" she gave up all she had. Now, I see that as a beautiful correlation to what our Savior, our God expects of US. I hope this makes us think, and appreciate what we must do to completely seek the Kingdom of God. Lenten Season begins February 22. During this season we commemorate the forty days Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness before He began his public ministry of preaching for repentance. It is a time for each of us to fast, abstain, surrender and pray! May it BE so!

Blessings, Jeanine Rishel, Assistant Pastor

50 Days of Prayer—March 16 When delegates to General Conference meet in

Tampa in April, United Methodists around the world will be able to join them in an unprecedented concert of prayer, seeking God's will for their decisions.

The Upper Room, a division of the General Board of Discipleship, has produced a prayer guide called 50 Days of Prayer, which is available in vari-ous formats.

"This is an intentional step forward in being a global Christian community and calling on every church, in every country all around the world to pray together for 40 days before we gather in Tampa at the convention center on April 24," says Tom Albin, Dean of The Upper Room Chapel in Nashville, Ten-nessee.

Copies of 50 Days of Prayer will be available for members and friends of First United Methodist Church, starting Sunday, March 4. The beginning of the “concert of prayer” will be Friday, March 16.

General Confer-ence is the top legisla-tive body in The Unit-ed Methodist Church. It will be in session April 24-May 4 in Tampa, Florida.

There will be 988 delegates from different coun-tries and continents. During the eleven days of the conference, delegates will revise The Book of Disci-pline, which includes the church’s constitution, and the Book of Resolutions, which declares the church’s stance on a variety of social justice issues. In addi-tion, the conference will consider and approve plans and budgets for the next four years and elect mem-bers of the Judicial Council and the University Sen-ate.

Major issues coming to this General Conference include a proposed consolidation of the church’s gen-eral agencies and a restructuring of ministry, includ-ing the elimination of the “guaranteed appointment.” Issues will first be dealt with in one of thirteen legis-lative committees before being dealt with by the en-tire conference.

The Rev. Mark Conard will serve on the “Conferences” legislative committee. This will be his fourth time to serve on this legislative committee and his fifth general conference.

The February meeting of the United Methodist Women’s Fellowship met on February 16th in Friendship Place. Circle 2

provided Valentine-themed refreshments. The guest speaker was Tomi Ann Foust from Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Reno County. After a short video presenta-tion, Ms. Faust fielded many questions from the UMW members. It was a very enjoyable and in-formative gathering. Under the leadership of Ruby Green, the Kitchen Committee took on the task of revising the Kitchen Ministry Guidelines. This document was more than 15 years old and thanks to Ruby it is now up to date and relevant to the ministry the UMW pro-vides through the kitchen. The UMW voted to pay for the replacement of the flooring in the church parsonage. It has been ordered and should be installed in the next month.

Thank you to the “Healthy Congregations in Action” Task Force that sponsored the fifth annual Women’s Spiritu-al Retreat at our church. “Habits for a Healthy Soul” was presented by

Rev. Nicole Conard on February 18th. Over 100 participants from Hutchinson and the surrounding area came to the event. Also, a special thank you to all the UMW and church members that helped host the event in many ways. At the retreat, we learned we must take and make time to care for our souls, and five holy habits to help with that are: Fasting, Prayer, Scripture, Small Groups, and Worship. Participants took home candles with the verse, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.” Galatians 5:22-23. This will be used in a “sacred space” created by each person during Lent. Each person was also invited to write a letter to God that included what they could “start and stop” during Lent. The letter is to be opened on Easter. The Healthy Congregations Task Force members are Lisa Dale, Bessie Rider, Marcella Kille, Joyce Luginsland, Shirley Nelson, and Joyce Conard. If you have ideas on “healthy” events you would like to see sponsored by our church, please contact one of these members. A special class will be offered during Lent to help you physically and spiritually.

The stretching will be modified to fit all abilities. The leaders of the class are Patti Arnold and Joyce Conard. It is sponsored by the Health & Well-ness Ministry Team. If you have any questions, please call Joyce Conard at 663-3824.

The First United Methodist Church Volleyball Team consisted of Mary Bruce, Mark Conard, Bev Froese, Tab Schrader, Scott Smith, Lorraine Warnken, and Terry Wolcott. League play started on November 14, 2011 and finished on January 24, 2012 with FUMC team finishing in third place. We had a lot of fun meeting players from other churches.

It would be great if next year we would have enough members that we could have two teams represent FUMC in the church league. HOW ABOUT IT FUN BUNCH???

Thank you for your generous support of this minis-try! A special thank you to Jeff Graber and the youth group for donating 208 items to the pantry from the Souper Bowl of Caring Campaign.

More than thirty members and friends of First United Methodist Church are taking part in the Kan-sas Area “Walk Challenge” that began January 15 and concludes April 15. Our church has consistently been in the “top five” for the most steps taken. Linda Austin and April Calhoun have each led the way at different times so far.

It’s not too late to join the journey! Every step counts! If you want to take part, please check with Lisa Dale, and she will help you get started!

In the meantime, keep on walking!

MMission and ission and MMinistry!inistry! During the month of March, members and friends

of First United Methodist Church will be invited to learn about and make a contribution toward our “Mission and Ministry” commitment as a church and support their favorite team!

“Mission and Ministry” is the name given to the three funds through which we participate financially in the work of The United Methodist Church beyond our own congregation. Our goal this year is to pay at least $26,926 toward an apportioned goal of $41,340.

“March Madness” is one of the ways that the Finance Committee is inviting us to raise funds this year! Starting March 4, you can make a special con-tribution for “March Madness” and designate it for your favorite team—college or otherwise! The dead-line for all contributions will be Sunday, March 25!

The totals will be reported each Sunday, with the final results announced on April 1!

Off to a Good Start! The Finance Committee—co-chaired this year by

Gaylon Green and Shawn Wyatt—extends thanks to members and friends of the congregation for a great start to the new year in terms of financial support! At the end of January, receipts totaled $38,117.88, in-cluding two significant “one time” items. This was $10,022.02 more than projected budget needs

Expenditures as of the end of January amounted to $23,683.96, which was $5,823.08 less than the projected budget.

Overall, there was a net balance of $14,433.92. This is the best start in recent memory for the church’s financial situation.

Thanks to the congregation for this strong level of faithful giving and support! Keep up the good work!

...Wesley Covenant Prayer

A prayer for the Lenten Season: “I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O Glorious and blessed

God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine.

So be it. And the covenant which I have made of earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”

District Superintendent Change The Rev. Rick Saylor, who is completing his

eighth year of service as Hutchinson District Super-intendent, is being appointed as senior pastor of Countryside United Methodist Church in Topeka as of July 1, 2012.

The incoming Hutchinson District Superinten-dent is the Rev. Dennis Livingston, who is currently pastor of the Valley Center United Methodist Church. Dennis brings great leadership gifts and ex-perience, including service as chairperson of the conference Board of Ordained Ministry for several years.

In addition to his pastoral leadership in Valley Center, Dennis has also served Ulysses (2002-2008), St. Francis (1997-2002), Washington-Linn (1993-1997), and Hunter-Pleasant view (1991-1993).

Among other things, Dennis is an avid bicyclist. He is also a licensed pilot.

Easter Lilies can be

ordered in honor or in memory of a loved one.

The cost is $10. Monday, March 19th will be the last

day to order lilies.

One Great Hour of Sharing "Be there. Be hope" is the

theme for “One Great Hour of Sharing,” which will be observed on Sunday, March 18. This “special Sunday with offering” is intended “to share the goodness of life with those who hurt.”

In 2011, the people of First United Methodist Church gave $302.50 for this special offering. This was most given for any general church “Special Sun-day” the entire year.

Gifts to this offering underwrite UMCOR's “costs of doing business.” That helps them keep their promise that 100 percent of every other gift we make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project-not on home office costs.

There will be an insert about “One Great Hour of Sharing” in the bulletin on Sunday, March 18. For additional information, you can go to the One Great Hour of Sharing web site:

a real difference in people’s lives!

Candle Extinguishing Liturgy Each Sunday in Lent, we will participate in a

“candle extinguishing liturgy” as part of morning worship. This liturgy was written by Preston Price, pastor of Anaheim United Methodist Church in Ana-heim, California. He writes,

“As we prepare for Christmas, we light a new candle each Sunday; as we prepare for Good Friday, we extinguish a candle each Sunday to remind use of the approaching darkness of betrayal and death.” Those who turned away from the light of Jesus

included many who had been healed, a wealthy indi-vidual who claimed to want eternal life, Judas Iscari-ot, the Pharisees, the disciples, and the Apostle Peter. This leads us to acknowledge the times that we, too, have turned away from the light of Jesus.

PRAYER FOR PERSONAL LENTEN DISCIPLINE

Lord Jesus, you fasted and prayed for forty days. Help me to fast and pray during this time of Lent. Free my mind from distraction and worry, that I may be more aware of your love, and more sensitive to others. Give me a spirit of generosity, so that I might share my gifts more freely with those who have less. Teach me to pray, that I might offer you praise and be more thankful. Help me make time to reflect on your Word; may it challenge, console, and purify me. Be with me in times of hurt, doubt, and confu-sion; unite my sufferings to yours and let them be redemptive. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, free me from sin, let me rise with you this Easter. I ask this in the name of Jesus, who died that I might have life to the full. Amen.

The phrase counters the popular idea from German phi-losopher Friedrich Nietzsche that God is no longer a viable source of any absolute moral principles. But why would this idea become so mainstream? Is our generation so caught up in the media and technology that we are forgetting about God? According the song, performed by the Newsboys, the answer is no. It reminds us that things we absorb externally (i.e. on TV, radio, or in the press) do not change the fact that God lives within us. So here’s the challenge… We live in a world where morals are constantly changing. It can be hard for people , especially youth, to have a clear focus on what is right vs wrong; whether that is treating others with respect or living with good values. The thing we have to re-member is that we have most of the answers right where we are standing. As the song state’s, “God’s living on the inside, roaring like a lion.” We need to remember to communicate with God and to learn from meditation and reading the word. All of a sudden, it’s not so hard. Jesus left us with two rules to follow. Always love God and to love your neighbor. Sometimes all we have to do is look inside and find out how well we are following those rules. Peace, Jeff Graber
