“This is a recital so extraordinarily played that comparisons become superfluous—no matter how many other good versions you might own, you simply have to sample artistry as exalted as this.” — Fanfare

Matthias Kirschnereit sees a theme running like a thread throughout his new Schubert CD: “It comprises for the most part works from his early and middle periods, in which the dark, despairing, and brusque side of the composer is revealed as well as a Schubert who squarely faces life, and who is exuberant and even boldly daredevil.” Matthias Kirschnereit displays a highly developed sense of the

nuances, as well as the rough contrasts, required to follow in Schubert’s footsteps.

BLACKFORD: Not In Our Time

“A paean of and to hope, a proclamation of shared humanity … this is a serious piece, but infinitely rewarding.” — Gramophone

“Fiercely paced and vividly dramatic, it’s a huge sing and a grateful one. Blackford has proceeded fearlessly, intuitively, but with confidence in his own craft, which is considerable. Not In Our Time is a terrific piece whose textual content may

cause choirs and audiences to think: is this for us? Emphatically it is.” — The Telegraph

Not In Our Time was commissioned by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus to mark their centenary in 2011. It takes the attack on the World Trade Center as the focal point of a work that explores the theme of war declared in the name of religion, from the speeches of George Bush and Barack Obama to the 11th-century texts of the First Crusade. This poignant juxtaposition of texts, alongside the vast

emotional range of the symphony orchestra, gives voice to the complex questions that surround these events.

DELIBES: Sylvia (extended suite from ballet) • Coppélia (extended suite from ballet)

Léo Delibes’ Coppélia is a pure delight, a feast of musicality and humor for all ages, and probably the greatest ballet comedy ever written! This disc also presents Delibes’ Sylvia, a romance filled with sighs of longing and the thrill of infatuation. Set in antiquity, the ballet

literally places love on a pedestal in the person of the Greek god Eros. The San Francisco Ballet, the oldest professional ballet company in America, was also one of the first dance companies to have its own permanent body of musicians. By the 1990s the San Francisco

Ballet Orchestra was generally regarded as one of the finest ballet orchestras in the world. Notably, in 1995, the Orchestra accompanied 12 international dance companies, as well as San Francisco Ballet, during the ambitious weeklong United We Dance Festival, which

promoted international communication and understanding.

Philippe Herreweghe’s lasting interest in the works of the Cantor of Leipzig has turned him into a man whose views evolve as he delves deeper into his subject matter. The joy & pride that he feels in having forged musical tools that have reached maturity, has led him to

come back on a Missa that has never ceased to intrigue him: the Catholic Missa of Protestant composer Bach. Together with a handful of excellent soloists and a Collegium vocally and instrumentally at its best, Herreweghe delivers a work that must be savored.

WOLF: The Italian Songbook (complete)

Stone Records is delighted to announce the third volume of the acclaimed complete edition of the songs of Hugo Wolf (1860–1903)! This latest disc comprises all 46 songs of his Italian songbook. Written in frenzied bouts of composition, these songs show Wolf at his most quixotically quirky, ranging in emotion from comic to divinely beautiful. A collaboration with the famous Oxford Lieder Festival, the UK’s largest art song festival, the series will be the first complete edition of Wolf Lieder—a considerable number of which remain unrecorded! Starting in 2010, the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, Oxford Lieder is promoting a series of concerts encompassing every song, all of which will be recorded and released on the Stone Records label.

Mark Stone: baritoneStephen Barlow: piano

DELIUS: 34 songs, including 20 world premieres

Stone Records is thrilled to announce the concluding CD in a two-disc series that comprises the first complete recording of the songs of Frederick Delius (1862–1934) for voice and piano. Produced in association with 217 Records and supported by the Delius Society and the Ireland Trust, the series is being released in time for the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. This second volume, which includes 20 premiere recordings, features all of Delius’ songs to German, French, Swedish, and Danish texts, the Scandinavian being sung in English translation. Mark Stone is critically acclaimed for his performances on stage and in concert, and his forthcoming engagements include his debut for Cologne Opera, concerts around Europe, and return visits to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and The Opera Company of Philadelphia.

HANDEL: Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 10 • R. STRAUSS: Till Eulenspiegel, Op. 28 • Don Juan, Op. 20 • J.S. BACH: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 • RAVEL: Rapsodie espagnole

This amazing Beecham/Furtwängler release contains works from two concerts that Furtwängler was to have conducted at the Royal Festival Hall, London, in January 1955. Sadly, he passed away in November 1954 and Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the two concerts with the repertoire as arranged, in memory of their friendship and as an affectionate tribute to the great German conductor. The two has been friends since the 1920s, each playing host when visiting the other’s country. The source material comes from off-the air recordings of these live performances, and is absolutely unique!

RACHMANINOV: The Complete Preludes

“These recordings were made when Katin was at the height of his formidable powers, a much-loved figure on concert platforms around the world. A renowned specialist in 19th- and 20th-century Romantic and Impressionist repertoire, Rachmaninov was one of Katin’s particular strengths.” — Sunday Times

This beautifully remastered CD by revered pianist Peter Katin appeared in the SOMM catalog recently as a tribute to Peter Katin’s 80th birthday. It was first recorded on two LPs on the Unicorn label in 1972, when the artist was at the height of his powers. It then reappeared on two CDs on the Olympia label in 1987, and made another brief reappearance in 1994 on the Pickwick label.

Sometimes, commercial risks can become unexpected bestsellers! In keeping with 18th-century home entertainment preferences, the Evil Penguin asked keyboard virtuoso Benjamin-Joseph Steens to record Bach’s Goldberg Variations on a clavichord instead of a harpsichord, and this recording became a hit (first on YouTube, now on CD)! On his new album, Steens confronts the delicacy of his clavichord with

the colorful intimacy of Jacques-Antoine Bresch’s flute, in an unprecedented exploration of keyboard and flute music.

Here, world-class hornist JD Shaw (former Boston Brass hornist) joins with the experienced conducting of Eric Rombach-Kendall and the talented musicians of the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony to perform a collection of works in which artistry, colors, passion, and sorrow illustrate “Tales of Imagination.” JD Shaw is currently Professor of French Horn at the University of New Mexico and was formerly the French hornist with internationally acclaimed Boston Brass, where he was creative director, music arranger, and co-owner of the ensemble. JD is an active solo artist and travels extensively throughout the United States as well as many countries in North America, Europe, and Asia. CIURLIONIS: Piano works

Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875–1911)—the father of Lithuanian professional music, a composer, artist, philosopher, and poet—embodied the idea of a synthesis of arts including music, painting, and poetry. His works have secured a special place not only in the history of Lithuania, but also in the global culture. Through his paintings he tried to express music with color, and as a gifted musician and painter, he felt the need to express himself in both creative spheres. In his bright yet short life ( Ciurlionis died at the age of 35), he created about 300 paintings and about 350 musical compositions, most of which were piano miniatures. He penned symphonic poems In the Forest (1901) and The Sea (1907); overture Kestutis (1902), cantata for mixed choir and symphonic orchestra De Profundis (1899); and compositions for a capella choir to the texts of the psalms.

USSR State Symphony OrchestraEvgeny Svetlanov: conductor

LYADOV: From the Apocalypse • About Olden Times • Baba Yaga • The Enchanted Lake • Kikimora • Eight Russian Folk Songs

Anatoly Lyadov was born in 1855 and grew up surrounded by arts and music. A teacher in the St. Petersburg Conservatory, a conductor, and a composer, his musical heritage presents a truly outstanding phenomenon of Russian musical culture. Although relatively small, it is a bright testimony of his creative search as well as his interest in, and proximity to, Russian folklore. He mostly composed pieces of a smaller scale for instruments, orchestra, and choir. The composer’s works for orchestra have something in common with the folk-genre symphonism of Mikhail Glinka and Alexander Dargomyzhsky, or the symphonic pictures of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Swan Lake • The Sleeping Beauty • The Nutcracker (complete ballets)

The repertoire of any ballet company always has three performances penned by the same author—Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky. These are Swan Lake (1877), The Sleeping Beauty (1889), and The Nutcracker (1892). Today, these works are well known to the whole world, but in Tchaikovsky’s time they ushered in a new era of the Russian ballet. Tchaikovsky was one of the first Russian composers who turned to the genre of ballet, adding a self-reliant artistic value to the music. This Firma Melodiya program features music performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra lead by prominent conductor Evgeny Svetlanov. The wealth of Tchaikovsky’s scores, performed by the celebrated orchestra, allows the listeners to become immersed in the magical world of the characters of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker!

RACHMANINOV: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Op. 31

Musicologists have time and again noted the immediate connection between great 20th century composer Sergei Rachmaninov and Russian culture. Loving church singing with all his heart, comparing it with folk music and considering both in aggregate the primary sources of Russian music, Rachmaninov took up the composing of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom with zest. The work was first performed by the Synodal Choir conducted by Danilin in November 1910. In his liturgy, Rachmaninov extensively used intonations of popular vocal music and plainchant, continuing the traditions of his predecessors.

Since the beginning of their collaboration in 2004, David Lefort and Simon Zaoui have regularly performed in recital with various programs: French song (Gounod, Poulenc, Fauré, Ravel) and lieder (Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn). In 2007 they attended a master class in interpretation with Ruben Lifschitz at the Abbey of Royaumont. This great specialist of lied and art song led them to discover the little-known score of Biondina by Charles Gounod. They thereupon developed a real affinity for this work, and—encouraged by Ruben—decided to compose a program around this cycle. Biondina, composed in 1872, is historically speaking the first cycle of songs written by a French composer in the 19th century.

CERHA: Und du… • Verzeichnis • Für K

“Und Du,” composed in 1963, is a piece about nuclear war, living in a bunker, and Hiroshima. “Für K” was composed for the 70th birthday of sculptor Karl Prantl. The piece is structured into two movements. In the far-shorter second movement, there are no new events; the goings-on are simply turned in a different direction, which lends the music a new “face.” The piece is scored for seven brass instruments (one horn, two trumpets, and four trombones), piano, three percussionists, viola, and violoncello. “Verzeichnis” is a piece based on a list of “witches” burned in 17th century Würzburg, Germany.

CENDO: Charge • Furia • Décombres • In vivo • Tract

Raphaël Cendo’s music captures all of the senses! His biography is a legend; upon graduating from the Paris Conservatoire, the jury dared not grant him his full legitimacy. The institution bestowed only a second prize, but his music was already first. He had turned his back on his peers quite some time ago, and chosen shortcuts at the risk of being misunderstood. The principle of his music is “a thwarting of the limit, thanks to an excess of energy,” and this calls for mad virtuosity from the performers.

DIVITIS: Lux Perpetua • FÉVIN: Requiem

This Requiem is known in five sources: two of them mention no composer, two attribute it to Antoine de Févin, and the Occo Codex attributes it to Antoine Divitis. The work is recorded here in the version transmitted by the Occo Codex, a sumptuous, richly illuminated 16th-century manuscript. Composed at the very end of the 15th century, shortly after Iohannes Ockeghem’s setting, this Requiem presents a perfect synthesis of the plainchant tradition and the supreme technical skills of the Franco-Flemish polyphonists who diffused their art throughout Western Europe. The luminous work was discovered at the end of the 20th century, and has not yet received the full measure of attention it deserves.

Bülow wrote a substantial number of solo piano pieces, songs, chamber works, and choral music. His piano works are as technically challenging as one might expect, yet the finest of them also require a light touch and a degree of sensitivity and depth of feeling that demands from the performer something beyond mere bravura. Unsurprisingly, they are idiomatically written for the keyboard.

Featured in the new Audi commercial!

The prestigious German car manufacturer, Audi, has selected an unusual piece of music to highlight the light and agile properties of the new A6 Avant estate. The highly stylized TV and web advertisement depicts a fantasy world and features a metallic “Audi hummingbird” that is able to nimbly fly among trees, flowers, and fauna made from petrol pumps, road signs, and traffic cones. The campaign aims to emphasize the advantages of the model’s new “ultra-lightweight” construction. The soundtrack for this innovative advert is a 1939 recording of “Open Road” by Johann Strauss, sung by American baritone John Charles Thomas. This transfer was originally released by Nimbus Records on the Prima Voce Series in 1992, on a CD titled An American Classic which featured 22 popular songs recorded by John Charles Thomas between 1931 and 1941.

ALAIN: piano pieces

The destiny of those who die young—Mozart, Schubert, or Jehan Alain—has a special impact on posterity; their precocious genius is an object of endless speculation. It is thus that Jehan Alain, who died during the war in his 30th year, seemed to have been conditioned by the premonition of his tragic death. Working without a break or rest, Jehan Alain expressed himself in music, drawing, and poetry, and this artistic output represented the happiness and purpose of his life.

The Barcarolle is a song evoking the sea and water and, more to the point, the Venetian gondoliers: "Barcarolo" in Italian means “gondolier.” Its characteristic rhythm suggests the motion of a boat on the water. Jean Dubé, 29 years old, is internationally recognized as one of the most important young pianists at the present time, appreciated for his musicality and power. He has been playing all over the world since he was four years old, and won his Steinway piano at the age of nine during the national competition “Young Mozart Prodigies in Paris.”

This CD presents a beautiful selection of arias, finely matching the Ombra mai fu e Lascia ch’io pianga by Handel to two arias from the Demofoonte by Duni and Sposa non mi conosci from the Merope by Giacomelli, which became famous some years ago when sung by Cecilia Bartoli. The repertoire is completed by a beautiful sacred music page, In turbato mare irato, a virtuosic motet by Vivaldi!

Franz LISZTItalia, sogno d’amore: The Sonetti of Petrarca

Chiarastella Onorati: mezzo-soprano/Giulio De Luca: piano

LISZT: Tre Sonetti del Petrarca (1st & 2nd versions) • O Lieb • Mignons Lied • Angiolin dal biondo crin • La Perla • Die Macht der Musik

During his entire life, Franz Liszt kept a very tight connection with Italy. The repertoire presented on this CD includes the two versions of the Tre Sonetti del Petrarca, written at a distance of almost 30 years, and a series of works that give us the chance to appreciate the refined art of a very different Liszt, very far from the virtuoso of the Sonata in B minor and the Transcendental Studies. These works are presented by mezzo-soprano Chiarastella Onorati, a singer gifted with an incredible feeling that allows her to display even the slightest nuances of the Lisztian writing, accompanied with great elegance and brilliance by the excellent Giulio De Luca.

The debut CD from a young Norwegian composer! Performers the world over regularly include Romberg’s music in their programs, and leading Paris editor Éditions Gérard Billaudot has recently begun publishing his works. The CD features two sets of piano pieces, interpreted by French pianist Aimo Pagin. The collections were inspired by the text Valaquenta by J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, and by a selection of paintings by Polish fantasy painter Jacek Yerka. At present Romberg lives and works as a full-time composer in Paris, writing music based largely on themes from fantasy literature, the visual arts, Celtic mythology, and comic strips.

Bach’s first biographer Forkel, writing 50 years after the composer’s death, links Bach and the clavichord: “He considered the clavichord the best instrument for study, and, in general, for private musical entertainment. He found it the most convenient for the expression of his most refined thoughts, and did not believe it possible to produce from any harpsichord or pianoforte such a variety in the gradations of tone as on this instrument, which has, indeed, a soft tone, but is on a small scale extremely flexible.”

Berenguer de PALOLJoys amors et chants

Ensemble Cantilena Antiqua/Stefano Alborello: director

PALOL: 8 songs • ANONYMOUS: 2 songs

Berenguer de Palol was born in Catalonia, the land of the Count of Rossillon. We know very little about his life; the only date regarding his life that can be established with certainty is 1164, the year in which his patron Jaufre’ III died. Berenguer’s artistic activity has reached us through a series of passionate compositions of rare musical and poetic beauty. His poetry shows an evident research of the supreme love, or joy; a way paved with suffering for love joined to the cult of feminine beauty. The main subject is woman, seen partly as an abstract goal in the search of love, and partly real.

18 songs by Ippolito, Mayone, Guami, Palestrina, Josquin, Trabaci, Brunelli, Luzzaschi, Cipriano de Rore & Barbarino

One of the wonderful things about playing divisions on the cornetto is that you are playing a single line of a polyphonic texture. When the other voices are played on an Italian Renaissance organ, with its wonderfully vocal timbre and articulation, the cornetto becomes part of the organ. As the Italians phrased it, the cornetto plays nell’organo (“in the organ”) or, in the words of English diarist John Evelyn, the cornetto “gives life to the organ.”

MAZZOCCHI: La Catena d’Adone (complete opera)

La Catena d’Adone was first performed in 1626 and marked the arrival of opera in Rome. With all the characteristics of the genre, a pastoral tale in one prologue and five acts, it chronicles the tumultuous love lives of Adonis, Apollo, Venus, and Falsirena. The frivolous and sensual—even erotic—tone is placed in sharp contrast with Christian morality in a perfectly mastered Recitarcantando style supported by a wealth of instruments. Besides being a world premiere recording, the opera inaugurates the arrival of a very young conductor to the Alpha catalog. Nicolas Achten is also a director, singer, and player of theorbo, harpsichord, and harp, and follows the path set by great musical pioneers such as Vincent Dumestre and Pablo Valetti.

SHCHEDRIN: Dead Souls (complete opera)

Nikolai Gogol’s heritage has played a tremendous role in the evolution of the Russian musical culture. Many of the greatest Russian composers turned to his works, finding inspiration in the author’s romantic stories. The Fair at Sorochyntsi, May Night, and Christmas Eve are all masterpieces that have seen rebirth on the operatic stage in compositions by Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Outstanding contemporary composer Rodion Shchedrin set himself a very different task in the 20th century. While continuing the Gogolian traditions in Russian operatic music, he turned to the great writer’s realistic prose—the epic poem “Dead Souls.” The composer worked on it for 10 years, undertaking a seemingly impossible task of realizing all the richness of the ideas and characters in opera. Humor and tragedy, emotional tension and extraordinary poetic value all make Dead Souls a masterpiece of the operatic art and the composer’s greatest achievement.

Premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR in Moscow, 1977. Directed by Boris Pokrovsky, designed for stage by Valeri Levental, and conducted by Yuri Temirkanov.

PROKOFIEV: The Love for Three Oranges (complete opera)

The Love for Three Oranges, an opera by Sergei Prokofiev, is one of the 20th centuries’ best examples of a musical work for theatre stage. Prokofiev composed the opera in 1919, and it was first staged in Chicago in 1921 with the composer himself behind the conductor’s stand. This double CD features a legendary recording of the opera performed by the soloists, choir, and Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio conducted by Gemal Dalgat, recorded in 1961.

MUSSORGSKY: Khovanshchina (complete opera)

Awarded the Prix “Michel Hofmann” du Disque Academie Charles Cros in France in 1976, and First Prize for the section of foreign recordings in Japan in 1975! Famous critic Vladimir Stasov, a close friend of Mussorgsky, brought the story of Khovanshchina to his attention, and the composer dedicated this work to him. Mussorgsky began to compose the opera in the summer of 1872, when Boris Godunov had not been completed. He was engrossed in the new opera, and had every reason to say, “I am living in Khovanshchina like I used to be in Boris.” Mussorgsky wrote the libretto himself, without relying on a literary source. He wrote in one of his letters that he was possessed with one thought—“to tell people a new word of friendship and love, a direct word and one as wide as the Russian fields, a word resonating with the truth from a humble musician yet a fighter for the right idea of the art.” He said this word in his great works, among which the popular musical drama Khovanshchina takes one of the highest places.

CUNNINGHAM: The Okavango Macbeth (complete opera)

“McCall Smith’s succinct libretto is spun by composer Tom Cunningham into gorgeous tuneful melodies that linger.” — The Scotsman, HHHHH

The Macbeth story as played out in a troupe of baboons in Botswana? This fanciful idea inspired writer Alexander McCall Smith and the composer Tom Cunningham to come up with their chamber opera, The Okavango Macbeth! Set in the Okavango Delta in northern

Botswana, the opera deals with the efforts of an ambitious female baboon, Lady Macbeth, who encourages her husband to become the alpha male of the group. The response to the opera’s premiere, in the No. 1 Ladies’ Opera House, led many to conclude that in this

extraordinary and unusual tale, a new operatic gem has emerged!
