Jefferson College to Host Community Job Fair March 22

Jefferson College will host its annual community-wide job fair on Thursday, March 22, from 1-4 p.m. in the Field House on the Hillsboro campus in an effort to provide career information and employment related resources in a variety of business, technical and healthcare areas.

There is no cost to participate for job seekers or employers.

A variety of companies will be represented from across the St. Louis area, making the annual community service activity the largest job fair of its kind in Jefferson and Franklin County. An up to date list of employers and positions sought is available on the Jefferson College website at www.jeffco.edu/jobservice.

For area residents seeking full-time or part-time employment opportunities, the job fair is designed to match qualified job applicants and employers throughout Jefferson County and metropolitan St. Louis within a 100 mile radius of Jefferson College. The annual event offers job seekers an opportunity to learn about current employment vacancies and receive information about a variety of career fields.

Job seekers should dress professionally in appropriate interview attire, bring resumes, and be prepared for on-site interviews.

JOB FAIR SUCCESS TIPS• Research participating companies prior to the job fair. Prepare a couple of appropriate questions for the recruiters.

• Bring your polished resume – several copies.

• Prepare a sales pitch for yourself. Be prepared to introduce yourself and speak briefly on your skills and abilities. You may be interviewed on the spot.

• Bring information required to complete a job application. Computers will be available for on-line applications. Have an electronic version of your resume for completing on-line applications.

• Get employers’ business cards and contact information for follow-up.

• Dress professionally. Business or business casual attire (depending on your field) is absolutely necessary to make a positive impression.

College President Reelected to RCGA Board

In an active role to promote higher education, economic development, and workforce preparation on behalf of Jefferson County and the surrounding region, Jefferson College

President Dr. Raymond Cummiskey was recently re-elected as a member of the St. Louis RCGA (Regional Chamber and Growth Association) Board of Directors for 2012.

This is the second year he has served as an ex-officio board member for the RCGA, whose mission is to unite the region’s business community and to engage dynamic business and civic leadership to develop and sustain a world-class economy and community. Cummiskey also has leadership roles in several civic, economic, workforce, and community development groups.

Viking Basketball Wins MCCAC Conference #1 Seed for Region 16 Tourney

Congratulations to the Viking basketball team on finishing the regular season with an impressive

record of 26-4 en route to the MCCAC title. Their excellent play has earned them the #1 seed going into the Region 16 tournament March 9-11.

LaQuinta Jefferson and Rayven Brooks were both selected to the MCCAC First Team, and Honorable Mention went to Lashonda Littleton and Jasmine Crawford. Head Coach Tonika Bruce was selected 2012 MCCAC Coach of the Year after guiding the 2012 team to a perfect MCCAC record of 7-0.

This remarkable region performance has allowed the Vikings to clinch the #1 seed in the Region XVI tournament and receive a bye in the quarterfinal round of the tournament that will be played on March 9 in the Lincoln University Jason Gym in Jefferson City. As the #1 seed, Jefferson will play their first Region 16 tournament game at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. A victory in the semi-final round will place the team in the Region 16 title game on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. Go Vikings!

Viking Athletics Hall of Fame Adds Two Inductees

One former Viking head coach and one former student-athlete were recently selected for induction into the Jefferson College Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame coach inductee is legendary volleyball coach Jo Ellen Stringer, who served as head women’s volleyball coach at Jefferson College for 33 years. Under her remarkable leadership, Jefferson College developed one of the strongest and most recognized volleyball programs in the nation. With 1,262 career wins and only 399 losses, she developed a winning tradition that is unparalleled by any other coach, player or team in the history of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Also selected for induction is current head volleyball coach Aida Antanaviciute-Steiger. She distinguished herself with strong on court performances that earned her All-American status with the NJCAA and AVCA as well as a full scholarship to St. Louis University where she earned her degree while playing two more years of volleyball. As coach, Steiger guided the Vikings to the NJCAA national tournament in 2010.

Both new members of the Jefferson College Athletics Hall of Fame will be recognized at the annual Jefferson College Athletics Banquet on May 2 at 6 p.m. in the Field House. Take Back March 22

Teen misuse and abuse of prescription drugs has been steadily increasing

in the region. As a community service, Jefferson County P.R.I.D.E. (Partners

Responsible for Increasing Drug Education) and Jefferson College will co-host a prescription medication take back day on Thursday, March 22, from

9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Sheriff ’s South Zone Office on the Hillsboro campus.

The event provides the opportunity for anyone to dispose of extra, unused,

old, or expired medications. There is no cost to participate. For more information,

The mission of Jefferson County P.R.I.D.E. is to increase collaboration

among community organizations, parents, schools, and businesses in order to reduce

youth substance abuse.

College to Expand Wireless Network AccessIn connection with the college’s strategic planning effort, the Board approved an upgrade and expansion of the wireless network at all sites as part of an action plan forwarded by the Information Technology Department. Innovative Technology Group, LLC, was the selected equipment vendor for its bid of $47,064.92. College staff will perform the installation.

Additionally, the Board approved a professional services contract with Sigma Information Group, whose current contract expires in March, to provide remote database administration in the absence of an on-site DBA. The contract is for an estimated 319 hours of work until the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2012). It is anticipated that the in-house DBA position will be filled with the adoption of the FY 13 budget starting July 1.

Respiratory Therapy to Start in Fall –Developmental Reading Program ApprovedAcademically, the Board approved the start of the new Respiratory Therapy program for the fall of 2012 and approved a new Developmental Reading program to comply with state mandated College Readiness Standards.

Board Revises Policy/Procedure for Leaves of AbsenceAs part of last year’s BAT/FAT agreement, which resulted in further communication between the groups regarding modification of the policy and procedure relating to leaves of absence, the Board approved a series of proposed revisions.

Technology Center Skylight to Be ReplacedIn the aftermath of hail damage sustained during a 2011 storm, the Board approved a contract with Brockmiller Construction, Inc. for $251,000 to replace the skylight on the Technology Center.

Faculty Resignation AcceptedIn personnel matters, the Board accepted the resignation of Bryan Peters, Interim Director of CTL and English Instructor, effective at the end of the spring semester.

Virtual Technology Boosts Welding InstructionUpholding their commitment to provide students with the latest instructional technology, the Board approved the purchase of a virtual reality welding machine from Lincoln Electric for $53,940. Through the high-tech face mounted display embedded in the helmet, students can watch and listen as they strike an arc, guide the electrode, and create a puddle of molten metal. The device scores each weld and gives immediate feedback. Other students can watch welds projected on a screen while the instructor teaches welding technique and theory. It has the advantage of providing practice without the use of expensive materials such as the inert gases and metals that are used in traditional skill building.

Board Selects New Legal FirmDue to the death of college’s attorney, Bob Jones, Sr., the Board subsequently approved the firm of Tueth, Keeney, Cooper, Mohan, and Jackstadt P.C as the institution’s new general legal services firm.

Trustees to Serve on Foundation and Budget Review PanelsTo provide guidance and direction in the preparation of the college’s budget for next year, Trustees Steve Meinberg and George Engelbach were appointed to the Budget Review subcommittee.

Additionally, John Winkelman was tapped as the Board of Trustees liaison to the Jefferson College Foundation Board of Directors where he will serve through June 30, 2013.

President’s Contract Extended through 2015The Board agreed to extend the rolling contract of President Dr. Raymond Cummiskey by one year, through June 30, 2015. He is completing his third year since assuming the post in July 2009. The contract renewal did not include a salary increase.

Audit Results Are Exemplary for College and FoundationAs part of the annual process to review the financial statements and internal procedures of Jefferson College and the Jefferson College Foundation, the Board accepted the results from the accounting firm Daniel Jones and Associates. As in previous years, both received the highest possible rating/recommendation given by auditing agencies.

Self Defense Workshop Honors Mary Daniels

Over 100 area women and men participated in the second annual self-defense workshop at Jefferson College, netting over $2,400 for a scholarship in memory of Jefferson County resident Mary Daniels

(Colletta) who was brutally attacked with a knife in 2010.

The workshop was led by Kevin Hahn and the staff of Hahn MMA Gym in Festus. Participants learned several self-defense techniques including how to defend themselves against standing attacks, weapons, attacks from behind, and ground maneuvers.

Thank you to all workshop sponsors including Eagle Bank and Trust Company, First State Community Bank, Bank of Hillsboro, Hillsboro Lions Club, Hahn MMA, and the Jefferson College Athletics Department.

Jazz & JeansDinner, Dance and Auction April 21 – Tickets on Sale

The Jefferson College Foundation will host Jazz and Jeans - dinner, dance and auction - on Saturday,

April 21, from 6-10 p.m. in the Field House on the Hillsboro campus. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund scholarships, emergency student loans, textbooks, and other projects to benefit deserving students.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with a social hour and open bar, followed by dinner at 7 p.m., dancing/listening to the sounds of the Jefferson College Jazz Band, and the auction.

The co-presenting underwriters for the event are Jefferson Regional Medical Center and Sapaugh GM Country. Sustaining underwriters are Eagle Bank and Trust Company and Coventry Health Care.

Tickets are now on sale for $75 per person (tables of 10/$750) and can be purchased online by going to the Jefferson College website at www.jeffco.edu and clicking on the “Jazz and Jeans” logo. The reservation deadline is April 12. Put on your jeans . . .and join the fun!
