A Message from the President Myranne Janoff
A new tradition has been started at Temple Sinai. We are going to have a President's statement in the Bulletin every 3 months. I am honored to be the first (as far as I know) to begin what I hope will be an ongoing opportunity for our Presidents to connect with our membership and convey what is on our mind. So let me begin...
I have been thinking The Temple Sinai Family. Many of us use these word in describing our congregation; “members of a family”. But what does that really mean? I am a member of my nuclear family which connotes strong feelings and day-to-day commitments. I am also a member of a family of close and distant relatives, Aunts, Uncles, cousins etc. with whom I share
simchas, and other life cycle events when possible. Then there is my extended family, which consists of close friends who share holidays and dinners and brunches and movies and my confidences. My Temple Sinai family is all of you, the people with whom I can count on to share Jewish ritual, in Shul or in our homes. I try to be there for all my different family members when they need me and they do the same for me. Families members are people that we count on to “be there” for each other.
Our Temple Sinai family is counting on you, now.
It has been our tradition, our culture, to have a daily Minyan morning and evening and we have been very successful due to dedicated people who have worked tirelessly against the odds to continue this important Mitzvah for all of us. However, as I see it, our Minyan should not depend on the dedicated few. It should be a community endeavor that will take very little time and effort. In fact, it is as easy as 1,2,3.
1. Come to a morning or evening Minyan once a week or once a month.. 2. Ask your family and friends to join you at the Shul if you need to say Kaddish 3. Send an email to the office a few days before your Yahrzeit and Rabbi Fine will send an email to the Temple Family announcing your Minyan.
If you need a Minyan on a Saturday or Sunday night we will arrange someone to Daven Musaf. We are also working on other ways to make Minyans more "user friendly" so that all of us will be able to say Kaddish for our loved ones surrounded and comforted by our community.
I know that if I sent out a request for help for a Minyan today I wouldn't have 10 people! I would have 20! I know you would be there for me. I can count on it! That to me is family.
On behalf of the entire Congregation, we extend our condolences to the
following families who have recently lost a loved one:
Lainie Goodman-Okon on the loss of her father,
Albert Goodman
Susan Abelsonon the loss of her mother,

Toto I Don't Think We are in Tel Aviv Anymoreby Lilliyah Mikitvansky
This weekend Jacqui and I went to Jerusalem for Shabbat. We took a bus from Tel Aviv on Friday morning, making it just in time to walk around the old city before it was time for Shabbat dinner. We walked to the Kotel and through the Jewish Quarter (okay, and got lost in the Arab quarter… awkward).
Everything in Jerusalem shuts down mid-Friday afternoon for Shabbat. We took pictures and wandered around even though it was at least 20 degrees colder than Tel Aviv and raining. We had dinner at the Rosenberg’s house (a family who we were set up with) and the food was delicious. They live in the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood which is mostly American Orthodox Jews. To get there, we couldn’t exactly use our phones or call them for directions (it was already Shabbat) so we had to rely on our navigation skills (funny right?). We ended up getting a little lost and walked through the most orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem, Mea Sharim, which can be very scary at night if you are not dressed properly or walk on the wrong side of the street. There were salads, chicken, sweet potato, challah, humus, brisket, salmon, and even a peanut butter pie for desert. We had an amazing time there. On our way back, we wandered through the Arab Quarter a little bit (oops) and it was amazing how quickly the atmosphere changes from friendly to genuinely terrifying. But we made it home okay.
The next morning we explored more and walked down to the Kotel again (it has wifi… true motivations). It was amazing to see the streets totally empty of cars and noise.
We had Shabbat lunch with a family in Jerusalem who we were also set up with. They had a daughter our age and some younger children, including an 8 year old diva named Shayna. I truly felt like I was home with this adorable little girl (who seriously could be my sister Sofia’s twin) playing games with us and changing her outfits every 10 minutes. She led us around the Old City where we visited a shul that just reopened 2 years ago after being torn down twice, first by the Turks and second during the Independence War in 1948. It was absolutely stunning inside and I wish I could have taken pictures (#Shabbatproblems).
For Shabbat lunch we had more fish, chicken, schnitzel, rice, vegetable chilli, salads, challah, humus, and some chocolate rugallahs for desert. We seriously felt Orthodox for a weekend with our skirts down to the floor and the liberation (or separation anxiety) from our phones but it was a good experience. It was so nice to see all of these families sit down without the distraction of phones, tvs, or anything but each other’s conversations.
After lunch, we went back to the Kotel, which is a sight to see right before havdallah. There are so many Jews praying at the wall right as the sun is setting and then you can hear the Muslims call to prayer come on the loudspeakers. It was very metaphorical for the conflict itself, which each side trying to drown out the other. After havdallah, we got back on the bus to Tel Aviv where it is significantly warmer with better paved streets and that was the end of our first weekend adventure.

Dear Temple Sinai Family: Let all those who are hungry, let them come and eat. -Passover Haggadah
It is our pleasure to announce that our Family has grown. Family Table, a part of Jewish Family and Children’s Service will be sharing our space. Temple Sinai has allocated the first two rooms when entering the synagogue from the side door to Family Table for their monthly food distribution for families in need on the North Shore. We look forward to welcoming Family Table in September just in time for the High Holidays.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Tamar Moskowitz at (781)693-5593 or [email protected]. Thank you.

Knesset Katan Lauren Goldman
Shalom Chaverim!
Knesset Katan has been learning wonderful new things on Shabbat mornings. During our first session, we read “Shabbos is Coming! We’re Lost in the Zoo!” This is an adorable story that follows the journey of Sarah and Moishe who become lost in the zoo and with the help of the animals manage to find their way home just in time for Shabbat! We created our own Shabbat tables complete with animal stickers!
During our last session, we learned about Tu B’Shevat and the Shevat Haminim, (the seven species). A poster filled with pictures from my trips to Israel helped the children to gain a better understanding of what grows in Israel…today and in biblical times. We designed our own almond tree pictures complete with real almonds in the shell and flower and sunshine stickers.
Also during February, our participants enjoyed a lovely Havdalah evening where they learned about Havdalah creating their own besamim boxes filled with cinnamon and cloves and their own Kiddush cups. They all went home with Havdalah kits complete with a special prayer booklet and Havdalah candle.
We look forward to spending more time together celebrating Shabbat, learning about Jewish values and exploring our heritage and customs. Don’t forget….Purim is just around the corner…please join us on Saturday March 3rd when we celebrate Purim and make some awesome groggers with recycled materials!
