This month certainly lived up to its reputation — in like a lion. And now that Jim Irsay and Peyton Manning have given us the answer, we can finally wrap up football season, right? All kidding aside, March has been rough. We had a relatively

mild winter, compared to some recent years, but I just read a weather.com article that says the nation has already seen three times the average number of tornadoes for this time of year. I recently added a “Severe Weather Prepared-ness Guide” to Cass County Online. It includes numbers you may need in the event of severe

spring weather — specifically thunderstorms, tornadoes and floods. Since we launched our websites, we’ve been astounded at the number of people who turn to us during a power outage, as we rely on the glowing blue screens of our tablets and cell phones to keep us connected. In addition to our posts on Facebook, we also text message weather alerts via CASSINFO mobile alerts. If you’d like to sign up, simply text the word CASSINFO to 46786 and wait for a confirmation message. We monitor weather situations closely and work with dispatch and Cass County Emergency Management. When there’s a weather alert, we’ll send you a CASSINFO text message letting you know about it. The idea isn’t to replace traditional forms of media, like your weather radio — it’s another way to notify you in our ever-connected world. There’s no charge for the service on our end, but if you don’t have an unlimited text pack-age, charges from your carrier may apply. By subscribing, you’ll also receive local deals and reminders sponsored by advertisers who make the CASSINFO service possible. And in addition to weather updates, we’ll notify you about things like road closures that may impact travel, parking restrictions or planned power outages. The service is available 24/7, though we limit the messages we send between 9 a.m. and 6 a.m. to emergency information. It’s a unique service and, like all of Cass County Communication Network’s services, it’s one we’re proud to be able to offer to Cass County. And, for those of you who still like to be able to clip things out and stick them on the fridge (the original Pinterest?) — you can reach LMU after hours at 574-753-6236. You can never have too many sources of local information.

The local Red Cross was first organized as the Cass County Red Cross Society in response to the floods of 1913. Funding from the United Way of Cass County currently accounts for about 40% of the operating budget. The remainder of our funds are raised through donations.

“The Red Cross and United Way are great partners and when the community reaches out to support both of these great organizations they

are impacting lives right here in Cass County,” says Mitch Figert, Executive Director for the American Red Cross of Cass County. “The American Red Cross is only able to deliver our life changing programs in Cass County due to the generous support of

United Way and we congratulate them on their 75th year serving the residents of Cass County.”

Funding available for downtown

improvements

Applications for the Commercial Facade Improvement Funding Program are now available to commercial business or property owners within the Logan’s Landing district. The program offers 50% matching funding up to $5,000 per prop-erty for eligible improvements. Activities eligible for funding include awnings, exte-rior painting, exterior lighting, windows, installation of a new brick façade, and façade maintenance/restoration. For an ap-plication, or further information about the program, please contact Logan’s Landing at 574-722-9345, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Funding is limited, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible.

Sprucing up the South Side

Businesses and residents along the south side of Logansport need your support. The Southside Gateway Project, which includes hanging baskets, flower pots and banners to be completed this spring has an estimated cost of $10,000. The taskforce has received a $1 for $1 match opportunity up to $5,000 through the Cass County Community Foundation. The Foundation has accepted a Southside Gateway Pass-Through Fund to accept donations through March 15 to assist the citizen group with the project. Gifts may be made by mailing a donation to CCCF/Southside Gateway, PO Box 441, Logansport, IN 46947 or by credit card through the CCCF website, www.casscountycf.org and designating to the Southside Gateway Fund. All gifts are tax deductible as allowed by law. For more information, call CCCF at 574-722-2200.
