Welcome to the March issue of Middleton Life. Whatever you do, don’t forget Mother’s Day, Sunday 18th March, maybe some flowers or a nice gift from Sweet Treats 4U on page 15. Check out all your local businesses and tradesmen in the following pages, and don’t forget to mention Middleton Life if you give them a call. It will soon be Spring so it will be getting very close to some preparation required in the garden and if you need expert advice and help you can be sure to find what you need inside. If you want to advertise, or have some community item of interest you want to share, then contact me by any of the ways detailed below. I look forward to hearing from you.

Though at the pinnacle of his career, both secular as
chancellor of England under Henry IV, V and VI, and
through the church as Cardinal Prince Bishop of
Durham, Thomas Langley never forget the town in which
he was born. Around 1408, he provided funds for a new
church to replace the Norman building that had stood at
the top of the hill for 300 years. With a licence from the
Bishop of Coventry, Langley consecrated the new church
on 22 August 1412. Imagine the pageantry and occasion.
Attending alongside the bishop and his entourage would
be the lord of the manor, Richard Barton and his family,
Father Robert de Hopwood (rector) and other clergy,
and a host of people from all over the extensive parish of
Middleton that included Great Lever, Ainsworth, Ash-
worth, Bircle cum Bamford, Pilsworth, Hopwood and
Thornham,
Much survives today of the 1412 church but just over a
century later, Sir Richard Assheton enlarged the church
and added the clerestory to permit more light to reach
the nave.
Assheton was responsible for the famous Flodden win-
dow and the beautiful oak rood screen. His improve-
ments
9
to the church were a thank offering for
the English victory at Flodden (1513) in
which the Middleton archers played such
an important role.
During this special year, the church is
having a spectacular flower festival in
early June to mark the Queen’s Jubilee,
and in October, the Lancashire Fusiliers’
Band are performing a special concert in
church on 27 October.
Following the successful Golden Cluster
month last year, the church, together
with Long St Methodist Church, the
Boar’s Head and the Old Grammar
School, will be open for visitors every
Tuesday and Friday afternoon from Fri-
day 31 August until the end of Septem-
ber, and during the Heritage weekend,
7,8 and 9 September. Worth putting these
dates in your diary!

Middleton Library News
Our Author of the Month for March is Jasper Fforde.
Fforde was born in London on 11th January 1961 and was educated at the progressive Dartington Hall School. His early career was spent as a focus puller in the film industry, where he worked on a number of films, including The Trial, Quills, GoldenEye, and Entrapment. Fforde's work has been vari-ously described as fantasy, sci-fi, comedy and crime - and often a mixture of all four. His first novel The Eyre Affair was published in 2001 and followed the adventures of his heroine Thursday Next as she attempts to find who has kidnapped Jane Eyre from the Bronte novel. This was followed by five se-quels, most of which take place in the 'Bookworld' - the dangerous and entire-ly fictional world that exists on the other side of the printed page. The seventh in the series is due to be published this spring. Alongside this, he has written the Nursery Crime series and the Shades of Grey series, both of which con-tain various elements of metafiction, parody, and fantasy. Fforde lives in
Wales with his wife and family, and has a passion for films, photographs, and aviation.
For more information on the author and his works visit www.jasperfforde.com.
At the February meeting of Middleton Reading Group, we discussed novels by the author Marga-ret Atwood. Our next meeting is on 19th March and we will be discussing ‘First Novels’. As usual, the group will meet from 6-7 pm here at the library. New members are always welcome to join us – feel free to pop into the library to pick up a book before the next meeting or just come along to listen to the discussion.
Langley Library also hosts a reading group as well as a teen reading group. Langley Library Read-ing Group meetings are held on the first Monday of every month 2-3pm – the next meeting is on 5th March where Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson will be discussed. You can go to any library in the Rochdale borough to pick up a copy of the book before the meeting if you wish to go along – new members are extremely welcome! Langley Teen Reading Group meets fort-nightly on Mondays 5-6pm. If you are a teenager or you know of a teenager who loves reading and talking about books, please encourage them to join as it is only a very small group at the moment so again, new members are more than welcome! For more information, contact Kayleigh at Langley Library on 0161 654 8911. Langley Library is situated within Langley Sure Start Children’s Centre on Windermere Road. Children who love Horrid Henry spent Valentines Day during half term learning how to create their own characters at a Horrid Henry creative writing workshop presented by Explore Learning at Middleton Library. Using examples from the popular Horrid Henry books, the children were taught how to use the techniques of alliteration and adjectives to make their characters come alive and the budding writers had good fun reading out their work at the end of the session.

If you want to learn how to use a computer and the internet at your own pace, or you want to build up your basic skills, come along to our free and easy guided Go On computer sessions every Mon-day evening 6-7pm. Storytime sessions are available 11.00-11.30am every Thursday morning at Langley Library and every Thursday afternoon at Alkrington library at 2.15pm (term time only). Langley Library held a responsible dog ownership and safety work-shop on Monday 27th February presented by the Dogs Trust for Bowlee Park primary school pupils. The trust’s Angela Madigan and her dog Sebastian, a Pug, came along to educate the dog owners of the future about the responsibilities and commitment involved in dog ownership in an effort to reduce the number of dogs that are mistreated and abandoned in our society. The work-shop was well received by the children and the children were well received by Sebastian the Pug!
Over forty people attended Alkrington Library’s talk on Motoring and Leisure in Edwardian Manchester on the 8th February at the library. The talk was given by Dr Craig Horner from Manchester Metropolitan University in conjunction with Middleton Civic Associ-ation and was very well received with attendees commenting that it was an ‘excellent presentation - we wish it had been longer’, ‘absolutely fascinating’ and ‘a very interesting and enjoyable evening’.

Liz’s Story Start weight – 18s 12lbs (Feb 2010) Clothes size 26/28 Goal weight 11s 5lbs (Nov 2011) Clothes size 12/14
I had started thinking about joining WW over Christmas 2010 but it took me until the February to pluck up the courage to walk through the door. What I didn’t know at the time was that my mum had already told Claire I was going to join! Be-ing so overweight had seriously affected my confidence and I had effectively missed out on a large chunk of my life, miss-ing out on holidays with my friends, nights out and hen nights which in turn affected my relationship with them. Buying clothes was a continuous trauma. Shopping trips often ended with tears, with nothing being bought and what was bought was usually just what fitted rather than what I wanted to wear. There was also the fear that my weight would affect my health and I didn’t want to put my family through the upset of this. Add all this to a very unflattering picture taken by my sister over that Christmas, the decision was made to start my weight loss journey!! From the first time I got weighed I had in my mind wanted to lose the 7 1/2 stone that would take me to the top of my BMI, the motivation to achieve this kept me going through the ups and downs (putting on a large number of pounds) of my weight loss. For the first few months I lost nearly every week but then complacency sometimes took over and some weeks I put on a good few pounds, but the week after I just made sure that I stuck rigidly to the plan and it would come back off again. In the grand scheme of things a few pounds wasn’t a huge deal. Even now two years on and being at goal it still happens! At the beginning seeing the weight on the scales go down kept me going as did my clothes sizes going down, until I was finally able to shop in ‘normal’ shops rather than plus size ones. For a long while I didn’t see any difference in my appearance and I continued to see the ‘fat’ me even when everyone else did, one of my mums friends even walked past me having not recog-nised me. This didn’t happen until about a year in when I was sat having my hair cut and I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, this still happens now. From the beginning I had told my friends what I was doing they were extremely supportive and en-couraging. It was there support and encouragement that kept me going especially when I finding it difficult. Staffroom tables are a constant battle with boxes of chocolates and tins of biscuits for peo-ple’s birthdays but they would bring low fat cakes in. Some other members of staff were on various plans and we kept each other going, every week I had to text my weight loss or gain (dubbed by me as the text of shame!) to three of my friends which I continue to do now. I have since found out that I motivated one member of staff to start WW and get to her goal. Last September I changed jobs and the stress of this affected my weight loss as did not having the daily sup-port of my friends. I wasn’t going to tell my new colleagues as I want-ed it to be a new start and for them to only know the new me but a few of them now know. The support of my friends, family, colleagues, members of my WW meeting and Claire has got me to through my sometimes bumpy journey and to the joy of achieving my goal!
My top tips Tell friends and family what you are doing Weigh and point everything Sugar free jelly and low cal hot chocolate for if you want some-
thing sweet Curly wurlys for if you NEED chocolate Go to and stay to meeting whether its been a good or a bad
week, face the scales and move on from it
