Innumerable aspects of our common parish life have been shaped by the love and faithful prayers of Canon Stevenson. A generation of Christ Church Cathedral parishioners has come to know her as friend, pastor, liturgical guide, and teacher as well as an extraordinary repository of knowledge. Enclosed in this issue is a letter from Anne announcing her retirement from the staff at Christ Church Cathedral and from the full-time ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church, effective Sunday, May 22. We have known for some time that Anne’s birthday this spring would bring with it her retirement. But given the many ways she has blessed our lives for twenty-two years, and the stability she has provided Christ Church Cathedral during two interim ministries, it is simply hard to prepare for this farewell. Psalm 100 declares, “Be joyful in the Lord all you lands, serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.” As I have prepared to write this letter, hearing Psalm 100 read daily at Morning Prayer has brought to my mind the many ways that Anne has joyfully led us into the presence of the Lord over the years. Coordinator of worship, catechist for Journey in Faith classes, mentor with EfM classes, and as one with the consummate word of encouragement; these are just a few of the gifts she has brought to our life and the college of presbyters in this Diocese. We will miss her dearly as priest and counselor when she takes leave of the Cathedral and begins to pursue God’s will for her in retirement. Yet the love and joy she has shared with us will linger to inspire and continually point us to the Cross of Christ. To make a right beginning of the ways with which we will honor Anne, the Vestry and I have • set in motion plans to provide Anne with gifts from the whole parish in which everyone will have an opportunity to participate; • appointed a Retirement and Transition committee (Scott Smith, chair) to preside over and plan for the celebrations scheduled to conclude after worship with a luncheon reception on Sunday, May 22, 2011; • established a link on the Cathedral’s website to provide periodic updates on developments pertaining to the upcoming celebrations: christcathedral.org/anne. Between now and May 22, Anne and I, the parish Vestry, the parish staff and other lay leaders will confer to assure continuity, progress, and vitality in the numerous ministries that have been born, developed, and cultivated under Anne’s leadership. The Vestry and I ask you to pray for Anne as she prepares for the next chapter of her life. Pray that the Lord will comfort us in our grief as she leaves. Pray that the Lord will strengthen both Anne and ourselves to meet the new day before us and realize the dream of the unfolding Kingdom of God in our midst. Peace. Dear Members, Friends, and Communicants of Christ Church Cathedral: From the moment I arrived in Nashville I have been learning about you and the ministry of Christ Church Cathedral from the Reverend Canon Anne Stevenson. DON’T FORGET...

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 13 at 2 a.m.

Set your clocks 1 hour ahead before going to bed Saturday night, March 12.

Dear Friends, Christ Church Cathedral has been my spiritual home, my place of ministry, my family for nearly 22 years. When I arrived here in March 1989, I never imagined that my tenure with you could possibly have been so long and so fabulous. My life in this place has brought me continuing challenge, friendship, growth and, al-ways, joy. In its wisdom, the Episcopal Church asks its clergy to retire when they reach the age of 72. For me, that time has come! My last day at the Cathedral will be May 22. I understand that we are planning one festive service, followed by a party in a tent in the parking lot! I hope in the next weeks, and on that last day; I will have occasion to tell each of you how much it means to me that our lives have intersected in this place. Dean Kimbrough is an outstanding leader for this congregation as together you move into the future. With Gene, Dolores, the associate clergy, an amazing staff, and outstanding lay leaders, you will continue to meet the challenges ahead. I intend to remain in Nashville. I am planning some travel, some family visits, time in Sewanee, and will offer myself to the diocese for various assignments. I will miss our relationships as priest and parishioner, but our friendships and our deep bonds remain. May God, who is Creator, Redeemer and Giver of Life, continue to bless us and keep us. Faithfully yours,

Anne Stevenson

Prayers for World Peace In the Taizé Tradition

Sunday, March 13 6:00 p.m.

A quiet, meditative and reflective style of worship, using music, simple chanting, periods of silence, and brief

readings. A special way to worship God and to quiet the soul.

Ash Wednesday March 9…

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, when we begin a time of reflection, self-examination, and spiritual redirection. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as preparation for Easter, when the

faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and were prepared for baptism. Jesus was sent by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness for forty days to prepare for his ministry. By observing Lent, we join Jesus on his fast in the wilderness as we consider our mortality and dependence on God. During liturgies on Ash Wednesday at 7 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 6 p.m., the foreheads of worshipers are marked with an ashen cross, because in the Bible a mark on the forehead is a symbol of a person’s ownership. Being marked with a cross symbolizes that the person belongs to God. This is in imitation of the spiritual mark that is put on in baptism, when we are “marked as Christ’s own forever.” The ashes are traditionally made from palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday observance.

Lenten Reflections Booklet

This year’s Lenten Reflections Booklet will be available to pick up beginning Ash Wednesday. The Lenten Reflections Booklet is intended to enhance you daily devotion throughout the season of Lent. We will also have electronic copies of daily reflections available to interested parties, please look for more information in Happenings and on the Cathedral website about this option. Thank you to all of this year’s excellent writers.

More than 100 of Nashville’s finest musicians join to offer perform-ances celebrating the works of J.S. Bach. Everything from solo harp to clarinets, organ to voice, jazz ensembles to brass choirs, sonatas to sarabandes will delight your ears. Studio musicians, symphony musicians, university faculty and church musicians all contribute to this festive evening of Bach heard in expected and unexpected ways. Come anytime to this free event and stay as long as you like. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Volunteers Needed: Six hours of J.S. Bach’s glorious music by local musicians with food for all is a wonderful celebration of Bach’s birthday. With 1,000 people expected to drop by (and eat!) it is a complicated event with lots of moving parts. Many hands make it run smoothly. We need volunteers for shifts of ushering, food service, stage hands, set-up on the day of and the day before, moving instruments, cooking chili and/or cornbread, etc. If you would like to help host this free offering to the community, please contact volunteer coordinator Susie Ries at [email protected] or 279-0680. Let Susie know what job you would like to do and when you are available. It’s a big party! Come and join the fun!

Religious Themes in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson

March 2, 16, 23, April 6 & 13

Lecturer Victor Judge

Vanderbilt University Divinity School

The nineteenth-century American poet Emily Dickinson remarked, “A word is dead when it is said, some say. I say it just begins to live that day.” In the lecture series “Religious Themes in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson,” we will examine how Dickinson’s words about life, love, death, eternity, and God continue “to live” today and are incarnated in contemporary questions about the human condition.

Victor Judge serves as a lecturer at Vanderbilt University Divinity School where he teaches courses on the literary theologians Flannery O’Connor, Albert Camus, John Donne, Emily Dickinson, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, S. J. He also serves as the School’s registrar, as editor of the theological magazine The Spire, and as advisor to Marginalia: to the Least of These, a student group dedicated to working with the homeless. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers and is in the thirty-first year of his vocation in higher education.

Healing Ourselves, Our Relationships, Our World

Friday March 11, 6:00 p.m.–Sunday, March 13, 11:00 a.m.

St. Mary’s Sewanee, Sewanee, Tennessee

As we look around our world we see brokenness in so many places and people. If we are honest with ourselves we have to admit that the brokenness starts so often within us. What happened to our dreams, to the great things we were going to do in the world? What happened to the wonderful people we were going to be; the most devoted friend, the supportive spouse, the most loving parent, the most serene person? Reconciliation comes through the power and grace of God as healing moves us ever closer to the people God created and intended us to be. As we begin to look at how we might reconcile a wounded world we must start with ourselves.

Presenter: The Reverend Dr. Gene B. Manning, Christ Church Cathedral, Nashville, Tennessee. Speaker, workshop leader, and an activist for human rights: Nontombi Naomi Tutu. God, Neighbors and Food for Lent

Imagine how it feels to be hungry... to see those around you having food, but not you... to be forced to tell your children you don’t have anything for them to eat... to experience the pain of not eating for a week and yet be powerless to help your situation.

Our local hunger problem is a single mom who works two jobs but still does not have enough money to buy food and pay for rent and other living expenses. It is a senior citizen living on a fixed income and unable to afford food, rent, and medical bills.

The Cathedral will host a Lenten Food Drive on Sundays April 3 and April 10 at all liturgies.

Please bring non-perishable food items to the church and place them in the Baptistry. Canned goods such as meats (tuna, chicken and beef stew), cereal, peanut butter, rice, pasta or can fruit are mostly needed. Our goal is 2400 lbs of food (2,000 meals)

On the following Sundays Nashvillians will speak to the parish on how the agencies that the Cathedral support has help them through some difficult times:

March 13: St. Luke’s Community House March 20: Room Inn The Inn March 27: The Next Door Ministry/Freedom Recovery Center April 3: Safe Haven Family Shelter April 10: Nashville CARES
