wel come

SPRINGFirst, we’d like to graciously thank our advertisers for the faith they’ve had in us from

the beginning and jumping into the deep end with us (even when we didn’t have a

media kit or mock up) knowing it would grow, AND IT HAS. We’d also like to thank

our readers for the all the positive input and support. When we were “gently nudged”

by local leaders, businesses, neighbors and friends into producing TukeeAZ we decided

from the start to design a magazine that would have readers looking for the next issue

and local advertisers the opportunity to show off their business or product. The magazine

is structured to focus on all of YOU and to produce something YOU can be proud of.

Some local magazines have been a hit or miss, but coupled with our new website, we

are quickly getting notice. We are getting consistent local TV coverage (Thanks to Chef

Laura and Sonoran Living Live), and numerous kudos from outside our community. Like

most of our local businesses we are small, but we have some incredibly talented people

that believe in the product and our community and we welcome your input (even if its

yucky!)

Each month we try to find something exciting to show you. Entering into SprINg is

no different, so for March we wanted to focus on finding your personal ING. We were

standing on the top of South Mountain preparing to take the cover shot when we were

approached by some visitors (not the ones relating to the “phoenix lights” but rather from

Indiana) who asked us, “what is that community below and what’s unique about it?

As our intrepid photographer, Art Holeman, who left for Africa after taking this shot,

answered their questions, we noticed at least every other word ended in an “ing”, and

there it was…finding your own personal ING. Many of these “ings” in our lives, and as

you will see throughout this issue, relate to the components of Mind, Body and Soul

(along with some other stuff).

With our previous issues, we’ve presented our monochromatic covers with our one-

of-a-kind logo in copper foil as it definitely makes a statement, but with the view of

Ahwatukee from the top of South Mountain, we just HAD to showcase it in color. Since

we embrace change, we also welcome our new Art Director who has added more splashes

of color throughout the magazine. She’s really good so I didn’t have much to say!

Shhhhhhh. Don’t tell her I said anything.

So, with that said, SprINg is upon us, what better time to check your status of beINg,

and find that your own personal garden may need some tendING. As for us, we’re going

to look for some fertilizer and begin anew and discover how it relates to Mind, Body,

Soul and Other Stuff. Enjoy.

In what is uniquely our ahwatukee spirit and positive attitude, each day

we walk out our door and participate in our own personal ING. whether its hiking, cooking, laughing, dancing, talking or any other ING, it’s time to focus on your mind, body, soul…and remember to include the other stuff!

There are the INgs you’re good at, the ones you aren’t

good at, and the INgSs you’ve never tried.

Now that it’s Spring, stop should-ing on yourself! With

all that Ahwatukee has to offer, you have no excuse but

to start overhauling your INgs and incorporate new ones.

Many of our imbalances come from choosing the

wrong INg so by discovering and exploring what our

community has to offer towards our own well-being,

we can relearn to live instinctively and be connected to

something more than our day-to-day existence.

The INgs in your life are the ones that make you who

you are, so here’s to discovering your personal INg!

(and let us know what new INGs you

have tried, found and loved!)

ere’s a little challenge: can you guess

what these topics have in common?

• Fairy tales

• Arizona wines

• Saving stray dogs

• Assyrian culture

• Star Wars conventions

Stumped? Of course you are, unless you

attended the most recent installment of

Ignite Phoenix. In that case, you know

that these topics were just a few of the

18 presented at one of the valley’s most

unique and engaging events.

Ignite Phoenix is a recurring event

featuring 18 speakers who deliver

presentations on topics they are deeply

passionate about. what makes Ignite

Phoenix unique is the speakers are

ordinary valley residents, chosen to

present because of their passion, not

because they’re professional speakers.

Past presenters have included local

restaurateurs, software developers,

doctors, teachers, magicians and life

coaches. Many have presented on topics

which are simply hobbies and completely

unrelated to their day jobs.

there’s another aspect to Ignite Phoenix

which makes the event all the more

engaging: each presentation is only five

minutes long, and speakers prepare

slides which automatically change every

15 seconds. that works out to just 20

slides per presentation. the restriction

of five minutes and 20 slides keeps

the event fast-paced and requires the

speakers to distill their message down

to the most fundamental core of their

passion. audience members are never

bored, as the rapid-fire presentations

keep everyone intrigued.

How did this start?

Ignite Phoenix is a part of an international

phenomenon which started with Ignite

Seattle in 2006. Since then, Ignite events

have been started in dozens of cities

around the world. the first Ignite Phoenix

event took place in 2008 and was held

in front of an audience barely topping

100 people. the format and the passion

of the speakers were fascinating, so a

second event was held a few months

later and attracting more attendees.

Each subsequent Ignite Phoenix event

grew larger, most recently selling out

to an audience of over 800 people. Its

popularity has ensured that Ignite

Phoenix will be an ongoing series

within the valley community.

From the beginning, Ignite Phoenix

has been a non-profit event

driven entirely by volunteers

and remains so today. a small

team of dedicated

individuals plan

each event and

rely on local

companies for

sponsorship.

The point of it all

the goal of Ignite Phoenix is to light a fire

under the valley’s creative community.

the word “creative” doesn’t just mean

artists, musicians and the like. a motif

which runs through each event is the

belief that all people are creative and

can find inspiration from hearing other

creative people speak about their

passions. Ignite Phoenix doesn’t light

a fire which drives massive change in

the local community. Instead, it aims to

light a fire in each individual, a fire which

drives people to find new passions and

more fully explore existing passions.

a second goal of Ignite Phoenix is to

help build community within the valley.

Phoenix and the various suburbs are

spread far and wide, and Ignite Phoenix

aims to counter the sprawl. It brings

hundreds of people together for an

evening of inspiration, and in doing

so, creates an environment in which

conversations can be started and

friendships can be formed.

the next event will be Ignite Phoenix

#10 on May 20 at Scottsdale center for

the Performing arts. also, submissions

are currently being accepted, so if you

have a passion you want to speak about,

now is the time to submit a proposal.

Only 18 will be chosen for presentation

on stage, but all are welcome to submit.

More information about attending and

speaking can be found through tukeeaZ’s

website at tukeeaz.com.

Matthew is currently the social media director for Ignite Phoenix. In his day job, he does software development and social media consulting. He first came to Ignite Phoenix #2 and hasn’t missed one yet. At Ignite Phoenix #6, he did a presentation on coffee, one of his passions and daily indulgences.

It’s never too early to find your own special ING. 11-year old McKenna Ham has been inspired to pursue her ING with passion — photographing the beautiful Ahwatukee sunsets. Her story has not been edited to maintain the nature of its youthful spirit.

Photographing Sunsetsby McKenna Ham

One of my favorite hobbies is photographing. Taking pic-

tures is like an adventure, and you can take pictures of

anything you want. My Dad gave me a camera, and along

with my step mother, we love racing out the door to catch a

sunset.

Sunsets are so beautiful, of course, some night there isn’t a

sunset, then you’re in trouble. Sometimes, when it is really

cloudy out, that is when you get the best shot.

When I take these pictures it makes me feel happy and excit-

ed just because they turned out great. I had to learn how to

get the right settings, and angle, and the best lighting. If you

could count how much pictures I have, it would mostly all be

sunset shots. That is how much I love photographing sunsets.

Where I go for the pictures is just like an overlook that looks

over Tukee. It’s a nice area for sunsets because that is where

you could see it really good. If you go there for those shots,

what you get is mountains, the sunset, and

the overlook. It’s such a great spot.

I really like taking these photos because

when I see the picture, I say to myself,”

Wow I took this photo,” or “ I really took the

shot?”

I love photographing and this will

always be part of my life.

Man, you were IT!

You and your friends could go anywhere, challenge each other to races, and see who could ride the farthest with no hands. In the spirit of childhood and also trying to get back in shape, I decided to take up bike riding again. Bicycles have definitely changed since then but I figured the basics were the same. You know the old saying “It’s like riding a bike, you never forget!”

As I found out, some of that is true, some not so much. First off, my body has changed immensely since the last time I rode a ten speed (which they now call road bikes). I took my road bike to the local bike shop and got it tuned up for $30. To my dismay, my seat didn’t seem to fit the bike seat as well as it did many years ago. I returned to the local bike shop to buy a new seat, now realizing this might be my second trip of many. I was also informed I needed a helmet and gloves (purchased ones that matched the color of my bike, of course!) I was ready to take on the hills of my neighborhood. I made it one mile the first day before calling it quits and actually had to walk part of the way.

realizing that I’m not in as good as shape as I thought, I decided to take it easier the next day but eventually worked up to five

miles a day. I was really enjoying this and had my route mapped out until one day I decided to go do another road which led to another road, well, you get the drift. One day I clocked 10 miles because I just got lost. people are pretty good about not running over you but there have been a few close calls and numerous adventures. Like the day I was surrounded by three big dogs and two little ankle biters. I got off the bike trying to keep it between me and the teeth. It’s those little ones you gotta watch out for! A neighbor down the road heard me yelling and rescued me. He told me I was lucky as another woman had gotten bit the week before. I ventured back to the bike shop for some pepper spray and advice. paid for the pepper spray, the advice was free. Seems being chased by dogs is good cardio exercise! I’ll consider that a lesson learned.

When it got too hot to ride so I put trusty “Blanca” in the back bedroom and said goodbye for now — as a fair weather rider and do not understand why people would want to ride in the rain, cold and humidity.

All in all, I do enjoy my rides, looking out for the snakes in the road, filling my lungs with fresh air and seeing just how far I can push this old girl. I’m not as fearless as I was when I was younger but I do feel younger when I ride that bike. So get your old Schwinn out of the garage, dust it off and take a spin. You might actually take a ride down memory lane!

Opening Sushi at

Sushi Eye

As a professional chef, I am

frequently asked which

restaurants are my favorite

in the Valley. For the last

several years, Sushi Eye has

been on the top of that list;

its original location in Tempe

was conveniently located

near my businesses. Recently

transplanted right here in the

Tuke, my long-standing favorite

is even better. On a recent

Saturday night I took a good

friend who had never been for

his Sushi Eye indoctrination. Of

course, with the help of sushi

chef-owner Richard Cho’s

fantastic cuisine, my rock star

status was quickly secured.

by Chef Laura Slama

That finely chopped wasabi

root – well, it was like playing

wasabi roulette – one bite

would have just a hint of heat,

the next had your sinuses

cleared out for a year. That’s

my kind of roulette.

Page 19: March 2011 - Tukee AZ

What I love about Sushi Eye is its ability to take what has

become a ubiquitous experience (sushi restaurants on every

corner, not to mention the grocery store) to a whole new

level. In this restaurant, with its sleek décor, cool lighting, and

copious comfortable seating indoors and out, you are made

to feel special the moment you walk in. This restaurant has a

following, “sushi eye die hards” who know it doesn’t get better

than this, especially in our landlocked, ocean-starved state.

So how do they do that? Like everything else, it’s a trickle down

effect, starting with richard. Having been a die hard myself over

the last few years, treating family, friends and coworkers to the

great combination of flavors Sushi Eye has to offer, Richard has

quietly catalogued my life: he knows what I do professionally,

where my daughter goes to college, the names of my coworkers

and friends and continues to make the effort to stay current. The

staff does the same – they are not just a name (hello my name is

X and I will be your waiter tonight) but also an individual who

wants to make a connection at the table. Don’t believe me? Sit

at the bar for an hour and watch the wait staff HUg guests as

they leave – that is what a following looks like.

Our server, Luigi (actually it was Mario Luigi for all you

video game enthusiasts) had only one goal: to please. Whether

making a suggestion for a cocktail to start (definitely try the

pom Drop), or following up on how we liked one of Sushi

Eye’s many creative rolls, Luigi rocked. And these rolls are not

just creative, they’re creatively named: the Climax, the Second

Climax, Booty and the tamer rice-free Atkins, among others.

All conversation starters, but the talking stops when the eating

begins.

I asked what was especially good that evening. I’m sure for

Richard suggesting one fish over another is like picking a

favorite child, but I am so glad he did as he turned me onto

escolar sashimi. Not meant to be eaten in large quantities, escolar

is buttery without being rich, and this sashimi offering was the

cleanest, freshest fish to greet my mouth in ages. Served simply

with finely chopped fresh wasabi root, you could honestly hear

sushi angels singing. And that finely chopped wasabi root –

well, it was like playing wasabi roulette – one bite would have

just a hint of heat, the next had your sinuses cleared out for a

year. That’s my kind of roulette.

Of course, as a regular, I was treated to another differentiation

– my own chopsticks. Yes, you read that right – once you

have demonstrated your loyalty to this sushi nirvana, you are

rewarded with your very own boxed chopsticks kept securely

on the shelf in the sushi bar, quietly waiting for your next visit. I

was epitome of sushi cool when mine were brought to the table.

So, if you haven’t discovered Sushi Eye yet, now is a good

time – this place pops our Tukee bubble, just like tobiko* on the

tongue. Sushi Eye is truly eye opening sushi.

*Tobiko: Flying Fish Roe, similar in texture and shape to caviar.

feelings.Spring fever is in the air! have you caught it yet?

the days are longer, temperatures are rising and

people are out and about enjoying all the amenities

in our beautiful ahwatukee backyard! Families

can be seen on the hiking trails, bike tires are

rolling and runners are lacing up their shoes for

early morning workouts. Spring brings a renewed

commitment for many to health, fitness and overall

wellbeing.

when we hear the word fitness, most of us

associate that word with our physical state and we

assess whether we are ‘in’ or ‘out’ of shape. while

many of us have spent countless hours getting into

physical shape, there is another type of fitness

to pay attention to; I like to call it our “emotional

fitness.” what? I have to be emotionally fit too?

Many of us are what I call “emotionally out of

shape.” we struggle with identifying, accessing

and expressing our emotions/feelings directly.

For some, their emotions come from every which

way but straight. they can be masked in sarcasm,

humor, thoughts and often times can be ‘stuffed’

for years, never to see the light of day. Stuffed

feelings are like having a clogged filter or broken

oil pump and with a lack of ‘circulation’, you can get

‘emotionally overheated’…doing harm to yourself

and to those you love.

EMOtIONS. we all have them…they are ‘hard wired’

into us. they are a natural part of who we are. the

families we grew up in and their attitudes and

beliefs about feelings are what we carry around as

adults unless we take some time to examine them

for ourselves. Many of us have very low tolerance

for uncomfortable feelings (like sadness, grief,

loss, pain). becoming more emotionally fit requires

increasing our tolerance for feeling uncomfortable.

It is a challenging thing to do, like a tough workout

or a race. but, it is important to remember that

feelings, like those workouts have a beginning,

middle and end and don’t last forever.

Feelings are not right or wrong, they just are.

Oftentimes we have feelings about our feelings.

we might feel angry and then feel guilty because

we feel angry. we are left ‘sitting’ with our anger

rather than the dealing with the guilt that lies

below.

Some of us grew up with the message to ignore

“bad” feelings. a caregiver may have said things to

us like “don’t feel that way” or “pull yourself up by

your bootstraps and get over it” or “big boys don’t

cry.” all of these messages keep us away from a

significant part of ourselves.

Feelings can be one of our most important

personal possessions; and identifying, accessing

and expressing them directly is a wonderful road

to creating long lasting intimate relationships with

important people who we put in our lives. how

we deal with our emotions on a daily basis with

can make a significant difference in the quality of

our lives. So EMbracE all of you…and start your

training program today!

Figuring out that personality is the important first phase of a design interview. Sometimes this can take several hours and a great bottle of pinot Noir. Okay, that’s not the truth, just an excuse. When a client already has that sense of style, feel and personality that they want to incorporate into their project, my job is simply to help them achieve it. It’s interesting for me to work with someone who absolutely knows what they want. Their vision is expressed to me passionately and they are excited to put a personal stamp on their transformation. Always makes me smile. Walking them through that vision with professional guidance is where the inspiration and fun begins.

A style that has become more sought after is Modern Design. This look can be truly transformational and realistically economical. Modern design themes came about as a rejection of other more ornate design styles and offered something new for those wanting the simple, minimalist look. Modern can be edgy, clean and sleek, yet remain comfortable and inviting. Bold, strong and sexy, some love it, some do not. But it’s a style that can be intimidating to create. Modern Design is truly an artistic statement. For those looking to introduce this personality into their living spaces, here are a few basic tips to keep in mind, although applications can vary greatly.

The use of bold color is especially important when modernizing. Color can be introduced through the form of accent walls and accessories. A simple splash may be all you need.

Flooring selections such as dark wood, low pile carpet and cool contemporary porcelain tiles can be used alone or in combination to create dramatic flooring affects.

White sinks and chrome fixtures are striking against dark counters and cabinets.

Lighting will always take center stage in the world of Modern Design as contemporary lighting is full of artistic flair.

Furniture and accessories are clean, solid and chic. One of my favorites…the wall mounted electric fireplace! It’s insanely

conversational and functional.

personalizing while modernizing…it’s inviting, inspirational and fun! perhaps a bit challenging and for some a total transformation however if you are looking to bring out personality this is a creative way to let yours shine. It’s a look you will want to come home to!

MODERN FLAMESThis contemporary home accessory

is sure to be one of the most eye catching features in your home. I absolutely love this! It’s instant

ambiance! And yes, it’s easy to use, which is just one of the reasons I

recommend it. you simply plug in the “picture frame with a burning flame” and enjoy the look of realistic flames

and even some warmth. Perfect if you want the look and feel of a real

fireplace but have limited space and not wanting to invest in the

expense of putting a real fireplace in. you don’t need a chimney or

outside vent. There are many sizes and options to choose from. This

mesmerizing picture flame is a great choice for a modern look.

The epiphany that many of us hope to see in magazines stays folded up in the stack of pages, and we find ourselves aimlessly perusing the aisles of our go-to, easy fashion fix stores hoping that something will catch our eye and will fill a hole in our wardrobe.

Chances are on a good day, the blouse you purchased out of your desire for something new and trendy sees daylight for a month and then becomes a top that sits in your closet and doesn’t even come close to whispering, “That’s me! That’s my look!” as a stylist, a professional who is never supposed to make fashion mistakes, I confess I also have a handful of clothes that have only been worn once because I’m guilty of shopping without purpose. however, I can also say that 85% of the clothes I do own are worn plenty within a year and I confidently know my style.

So, what if 2011 was the year that you finally built the wardrobe that is your style, and 8.5 times out of 10 every purchase you made hit the nail on the head? Ten out of ten is perfection, and not even stylists are perfect. So, how do you build an 8.5?

Flip through a fashion magazine, when you see an outfit that you crave, save the page. Once you have five pages of style inspiration, tuck them in your purse. you will then be prepared for your shopping trips to nordstrom, detours to the clothing section in Target and tempting shoe sales where you might otherwise come home with another pair of black flats. you will promptly be able to remind yourself that you are need of some round toe, nude pumps, which by the way, every woman really should have, and you will have the measuring stick to say no to the flats.

Keep an archive of these magazine clippings, and you will come to understand your personal style. you’ll recognize common threads, such as colors you are drawn to, stripes are your favorite pattern or you may really love sun dresses even though you always wear jeans.

“DIanE - [hEaVy SIGh] - DO OnE ThInG; DO IT WEll, anD MOVE On.”

Ha! That was my husband’s advice to me, early in our marriage. Living with a whirling dervish made him dizzy, it seemed. Even before our kids arrived on the scene, it was nearly impossible to truly dedicate myself to completing just one task at a time. How boring! I am woman; watch me multi-task.

I can’t say much has changed over the years for Venus and Mars, navigating endless demands of the domestic landscape. My husband attacks a task at hand with the visceral focus of a surgeon’s initial incision. Neither inquisitive preschoolers nor ringing doorbells nor barking dogs will break his concentration. Not me. I juggle two things at once at the very least, thinking about the 4 others I’ve got ahead… all while doling out bones to the 3 needy “pups” nipping at my heels.

My endless observation of social behavior leads me to believe my penchant for multi-tasking must be imprinted into the DNA of most women. Mornings, as soon as my lids fly open, I pick up all the balls and hit the ground running. With a ticking clock hastening my pace, I simultaneously juggle the morning round…coordinate breakfast, negotiate sibling warfare, sign papers, toss a load in the washing machine, strategize schedules with my other half (who is busy doing one thing at a time, doing it well, and then moving on), slapping on some lip-gloss, emerge victorious in the debate over wearing mismatched clothes with my littlest one; tabulate what deadline I simply must meet that day, and shepherd 3 kids to the car. Even when we’re driving, I review spelling words, ask about the latest on the social scene and lead a quick prayer for their safety. Whew. Take a breath; get ready for the next round.

I’m curious about the origination of this pattern I see in so many women. Was it a necessary adaptation to the demands of raising children even as women worked alongside men-folk in the fields? Or, are our brains simply wired to manage multiple tasks in preparation for tending to that for which we seem naturally suited… nurturing relationships, managing employees, tending to children with different developmental needs at once? Note to self: add, “read up on the history of multi-tasking” to the to-do list. Yeah; I can squeeze that in!

My own propensity for juggling skyrocketed with the birth of my third baby. I spent many afternoons nursing my infant while helping another with homework and keeping a trained eye on my ambitious middle child, practicing handstands around the house. I remember smiling to myself at times, liking this new version of myself, juggling so many balls at once. True, sometimes I did, and often still do, drop one of those balls. (Not the baby, of course!) I’d forget to return a client’s call; neglect to sign a permission slip for a field trip, place my husband last on the list, again. But in all, I manage to keep my head above water meeting the demands of my numbered roles… mother, wife, professional, friend, volunteer, church leader, chauffeur, nurse, counselor, neighbor, family member. Where would the world be without women?

So sorry, honey. I never was able to take your well — intentioned advice to “do one thing, do it well, and move on.” But it’s all right; that’s your job. Two whirling dervishes would just collide. And I appreciate that every now and again, you convince me to put down all those balls and just relax. Even if I do insist on cutting coupons while we watch TV.

As a result of people talking, texting, and e-mailing while driving, approximately 500,000 individuals are hurt and 6,000 killed annually.

According to the American Automobile Association’s Director of Traffic Safety, distracted drivers cause approximately 24% to 50% of vehicular accidents. For example, a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Virginia Commonwealth University study concluded that texting or videotaping while slowing to observe other accidents caused 16% of distracted driver accidents. Based on survey results cited in Oprah’s no texting campaign, it would seem most of us are tempted to use cell-phones while driving. The survey cited by Oprah’s campaign revealed that 71% of individuals 18 to 49 years of age

drive while texting or talking on their cell-phones. This makes it essential for all drivers to familiarize themselves with Arizona’s texting laws.

Phoenix City Code Section 36-76.01 provides:

E. If a person violates this section and the person is not involved in a motor vehicle accident, the person is subject to a civil penalty of not less than $100 plus any other penalty assessments authorized by law.

F. If a person violates this section and the person is involved in a motor vehicle accident, the person is subject to a civil penalty of not less than $250 plus any other penalty assessments authorized by law.

G. If a person is cited for violating this section, the person is involved in a motor vehicle accident and a written accident report is required by law, the law enforcement officer investigating the accident shall indicate on the written accident form the use of a personal digital assistant to send or receive a written message at the time of the accident.

Although currently only the City of phoenix has texting while driving laws in place, the Arizona State Legislature is seriously considering two pieces of legislation that could make texting while driving an offense statewide. Arizona House Bill (HB) 2426 seeks to prevent drivers less than 18 years of age holding Class g licenses from using cell phones or texting while driving. The proposed penalty for violating HB 2426 would be an extension of their restricted driver’s license for six months. Arizona Senate Bill (SB) 1111 seeks to prohibit driving while using all wireless devices in the State. The proposed penalty is $100 for a first offense, $250 and community service for a second offense, and $500 and community service for a third offense. SB 1111 would also double the fines proposed if automobile accidents were involved.

Please refrain from texting while driving and drive defensively because so many people continue to drive while texting. 50

today’s businesses are more than about making money. It’s about making a difference. here are a few examples of the many in ahwatukee who are setting examples for our community through their personal commitment and actions.

Ahwatukee’s top litigator, Melanie Beauchamp will defend the concept of charity through deeds rather than words. A longtime resident and business owner, she has been involved with numerous charitable events and mentoring. Of her most rewarding experiences as a guest lecturer at Mountain pointe High School she says, “I think I benefited more than the students!” Melanie has also helped raise money for the Sandra Day O’Connor House and various youth athletic programs. She is currently working with the Chamber to promote Women in Business through a fashion show benefiting Connecting to Serve’s scholarship fund.

Doozy of a Deal is the locally based deal of the day website, which in addition to delivering dining, pampering and entertaining deals, is giving back to our community. Through its Doozy “gives Back” fund-raising program Doozy donates 7.5% of every deal sold to local schools, charities, and non-profits. Since its launch in March of 2010, has raised over $17,000 for our community.

As the child of a single mother, Connie Nelson spent much of her youth at the YMCA where she discovered the joys of volunteering. Her many years of helping others led her to continue to do so, and she now serves as Ahwatukee Foothills YMCA’s Executive Director. In addition to her work with the YMCA, Connie meets monthly with the Ahwatukee Chamber Coalition where other area non-profit groups, associations and community leaders come together to discuss local issues and concerns.

Excuses… I’ve heard them all in my 25 years training clients. You know the if ‘I had a nickle’ bit? Well, let’s just say, I should be a rich man. A very rich man. I’ll give you a few of my favorites EXCUSES but will forgo the names, to protect ‘the lazy’. 1. My house is too messy. What does this even mean?

What does a dirty house have to do with working out? 2. I’m too tired. 3. I don’t want to eat rabbit food. 4. I’ll get too sweaty or stinky.

You do realize you will have to sweat at some point in order to lose weight right?

And I still laugh out loud when I think about this one: I need to diet before I start working-out. I understand we would all be better off with 30 hours in our day, that jobs are demanding, and kids suck the energy out of us. But the reality is, life isn’t handing us an extra 6 hours on a silver tray and while we try to ‘find the time to workout’ our waistlines get wider, our skin starts to sag and our health is hitting and all-time low. So, aside from stepping away from the cheeseburger and fries, how do we take control of our health; in mind, body and spirit?

IT’S AS EASY AS 1-2-3-4.

1. COMMITMENTMake your commitment known. A private promise is rarely as effective as one you make before others. Understand the motivation behind your commitment and be prepared for the mental fight that will ensue when your days are long and your patience for results is short. 2. SET rEALISTIC gOALS The magazine covers seduce us with claims of “Diets That Work” and ways to “get Think Fast”. But, if they worked, the Centers for Disease Control’s recent findings wouldn’t show that roughly 25% of adult Americans have Type 2 diabetes. There isn’t a magic pill, it’s not coming off fast and your goals are just that, YOUr goals. 3.. FIND THE rIgHT FITNESS prOgrAM FOr YOUr NEEDS Start with what you enjoy. Hiking in our Tukee Foothills or maybe biking in your neighborhood. But, then change it up to avoid boredom. Just keep the momentum going!

4. MAkE A DATE AND DON’T STAND YOUrSELF UpYou schedule your dentist appointment, dinner with your friends and all your meetings for work and kids. Make a date for fitness! You can continue with the excuses and watch your overall wellness slip away or you can consider these numbers: We all get 168 hours in the week. But, you only need 3 to 4 hours to begin making exciting improvements in your health. What are you waiting for?

sweatIngToxins are in the water, air, food, soaps, shampoos and even clothes and have been directly linked with a host of diseases: cancer, lowered immune function, arthritis, autism, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, neurological as well as cardiovascular disorders. So, its TIME TO SWEAT and detoxify. Sherry rogers MD, in Detox or Die, says toxicity is a one-way street leading to disease; the key to healing the impossible is to reverse the toxicity.

Therapeutic sweating is one of the most natural ways to assist your body’s natural detoxification. Now, I’m not saying you should sit in a sweat lodge all day, but perspiring is a natural way to eliminate waste from your body. Skin has been called your “third kidney” due to its incredible waste removal capabilities. Yoga is a healing lifestyle, and if you sweat in the process, so begins the elimination of toxins.

Medical studies show laughter boosts levels of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and suppresses levels of epinephrine, the stress hormone. When Norman Cousins, a columnist for Saturday Review and perhaps most well-known proponent of laughter therapy was diagnosed in 1964 with a painful and potentially lethal auto-immune condition. Faced with the prospect of his impending death, he realized if negative emotions contribute to poor health and tend to make symptoms worse and positive emotions should have the opposite effect. So he decided to put his theory to a test. With his doctor’s permission, he rented a hotel room and watched Marx Brothers movies and Candid Camera episodes for hours on end. He discovered his pain levels decreased and the quality of his sleep improved. He even went into remission surprising the medical community.

One researcher in the 1980’s, Dr. Lee Berk, also found that laughter increases the activity of cells that destroy viruses and tumors, increases disease destroying antibodies and increases cells which help cellular immune responses.

Another study took a look at 20 high-risk diabetic patients with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. These patients were managed according to standard medical guidelines but half watched funny videos for 30 minutes a day. researchers found was after two

months the laughter group had lower levels of stress hormones, improved cholesterol levels, and lower levels of harmful inflammatory proteins. The study concluded that “there is an intrinsic physiological intervention brought about by positive emotions such as mirthful laughter, optimism and hope.”

No one wants to be given a life-altering medical diagnosis. But when faced with such a situation, following the standard prescribed therapies along with a healthy dose of optimism and laughter just might improve your odds for recovery.

If you’ve stepped foot in a cell phone store or watch any amount of TV you are likely familiar with how many options there are for mobile devices. Though Blackberrys were ubiquitous in the business world it wasn't until Apple released the iphone that the smartphone really caught on. Now we have the iphone, Android and Windows phone 7 and they all claim to be the best, so how can you know which one is right for you? If you're going to shell out $300 for a new phone you want to make sure you're getting the best one. This gets more difficult as most people emotionally zealous about their current device.

Comparing features isn’t always helpful. They all perform the same high level tasks; Download and run applications, create, edit and view contacts, make calls, use gpS and browse the internet. All three of these phones do these things but it's all in how they do it that make them what they are. It comes down to personal preference and how you want your superphone to do things.

The iphone varies from the other devices as it actually features less variety. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as it means that it's a lot easier to pick out which model since all you have to do is decide how much internal memory you need. If you want to pick up a Windows phone 7 or an Android device there are an overwhelming number of options since multiple manufactures make multiple models.

Then you have apps. Lots and lots of apps. The iphone's app store has been around the longest and has more high-quality apps than the Android market, but are generally more expensive. The Android market is quickly catching up and a lot of iphone developers have started doing Android apps as well. The Windows phone 7 app store has the least number of apps available, but their selection is growing steadily. Exploring apps and figuring which device has the apps what you need is definitely one of the most important features in determining which will be the best device for you.

All in all you can't go wrong with the main three contenders. They are three different personalities and the secret is all in finding which one's voice attracts you the most.
