What are the true necessities to life? There are many different opinions many people have. Some believe there are only are only four necessities to sustain life.

These four things are physical and are:

1) food2) water3) shelter4) oxygen

These may keep a body alive, but they may not keep your mind healthy. One must have other things in life to maintain life as a human being. All life is not created equal. Amoebas, a single celled animal, don’t think or love, therefore can’t believe in much of anything. All they require is food, water which is also their shelter and oxygen. But we are not amoebas, we are much more complicated than that. We, as human beings must have something more in which to survive. We must have:

1) love2) happiness3) faith4) confidence

Enrolling in Martial Arts can have a great deal with inspiring confidence in ourselves. Giving us the faith we need to keep working hard to get to our goals. Then we will be happy with ourselves with the achievements we accomplish. Often we share these accomplishments with our family and friends whom we love.

Is Martial Arts a necessity of life? It depends on who you may ask. If you look at it in this way, it could be the most essential part of your life! It gives you the motivation to do your best each and everyday. Martial arts gives you the confidence to go for your dreams, no matter what those dreams may be, whether it is to be an engineer or a ballerina or a black belt, you know you can do it if you really work hard enough to do it!

Martial arts feeds our mentality to keep us striving for more in our everyday lives, motivating to become more than what we were yesterday. Martial arts also teaches us respect for our elders and our family. Which in return, we receive the love we need as humans. If we didn’t receive love and affection, we would turn into destructive and hateful people. Martial Arts is not about being destructive, it is about self-defense.

To keep your life down to the necessities, just remember the basics you need to stay happy and healthy. Eat the right foods, drink lots of water, practice your martial arts daily, respect your family and friends, and this will keep your faith and confidence within yourself, as well as keeping your physical self strong and healthy too!

IN a small village long ago what is now known as China, a small boy lived with his family. Chung-Ho was learning how to be a young man. He had been practicing his martial arts with his father, Master Jae-Sun. But the time had come to begin his training away from his family and away from the distraction of his brothers and sisters. He must do only what is necessary to become a young master of the art. His father sent him to train with the old Grandmaster Kang-Dae that lived on top of the

hill by himself. There Chung-Ho would train and could concentrate on becoming a powerful master of the arts like his father did at his age. Chung-Ho did not want to leave his family.

His father told him, “It will be one of the best experiences of your life my son. You will discover things about yourself you

did not know. Grandmaster Kang-Dae will teach you things about

yourself that you will discover about yourself that only being away from us and alone with him you will find out.”

Chung-Ho came back almost a year later a changed man. A master of the martial arts, a master of himself.

Tales and Traditions: Necessary “One of the greatest necessities in life is to discover creative solitude.”

~Carl Sandburg

Let me start with resistant starches: grains, beans, and legumes aid in eating less, lowering cholesterol, burning more calories, feeling more energy and reducing stress. Research has proven that having a daily caloric intake of 64% or 361 grams of resistant starch aids in staying thin. Carbs fill you up acting as an appetite suppressant; which keeps you more full than protein or fat. The digestion is slower in return triggers sensations of fullness in both the belly and brain. People who consume the resistant starches take in 10% fewer calories. The fiber from the resistant carbs will fill them up allowing them to eat the foods they want. The good carbs raise levels of satiety hormones that tell the brain to flip a switch that diminishes hunger and turns up the body’s metabolism. With the right mixture of carbs, it is the best way to control your blood sugar and keep diabetes at bay.

Starch foods are best to lower their post-meal blood sugar and insulin response by up to 38%. You can eat the carbs you want by mixing them so they do NOT cause a spike in the blood sugar. When eating brown rice instead of white rice and combining it with beans, or other high resistant starches that will keep your blood sugar more balanced than the low-carb diet. Resistant carbs aid in speeding up the metabolism and the body’s natural fat burners. These fatty acids found in the resistant carbs, help to preserve muscle mass and that helps your metabolism aiding you to lose your weight faster. Keeping you satisfied longer, the brain acts like a computerized fuel gauge that directs you till fill up when necessary. “Dieters feel empowered once they lose weight on carbs. For the first

time, they are able to lose weight by eating in a balanced manner, without cutting out entire food groups,” stated Sari Greaves, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Association. With fad diets, think twice before eliminating import foods from your diet.

Philosophy: Necessary “What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.”

~ Abraham MaslowThe best way to for anyone to make changes within oneself is to do something different and for the better. Not to say you might be a bad person, but everyone could use some improvement in some form or another. Possibly to improve your diet, or not to say the wrong things at the

wrong time. Maybe to just get in better shape or not

to procrastinate. It is within you to change. Look in the mirror, deep

inside of yourself and tell yourself everyday that you will not miss your martial arts class because you

are too sore from the last one. The best way to work out your soreness is too workout some more! It will keep your mind focused too. Pushing yourself to go to class when you don’t feel like it, will help train yourself to do other things you might not want to do but you know is necessary. Little by little the necessities will be done and your routine will become automatic not forced. This will change you and your outlook and your abilities and surroundings for the better.
