ON THE COVER:

“Chakras” embodies a spiritual message which protrudes from an urban background to show that our inner Buddha can be found anywhere, not just in remote, sacred places around the world. The top hat and high heels of the blue silhouette represent the ego self, who wanders to find their dreams, while their true path resides within. We all possess the tools to create a world of bliss, and the white circles above her head symbolize the Divine waiting for an invitation to enter and expand her world. Hannah creates meaningful collages with her own images and paintings when she receives a message from a greater source. She

can develop prints and paintings with a personal message for others to illuminate their living spaces. Feel free to connect with her at [email protected] or 913-708-2633.

The Garden

Passion grows among rocks and soil and flowers

Like cool, wet dirt cleansed by Spring’s generous rain.

Encouraged by sunlight and gentle wind to grow on-

A seedling bending to it’s Master’s whim.

I am creator- artist unknowing-

Unstopped by structured shoulds of sense.

Unfettered, unchained, undaunted-

“Capture Me!” passion calls, and I know I cannot:

Control or corral or imprison,

Lest fire cease to rage and die – like smoldering embers

Doomed to lie dormant beneath precious ground

“Til Spring’s wisdom warmth awakens my fire.

By: Rick Mareske Communiversity's Wholistic Health Fair is very differ-ent from the kind of health fair you'll find at your local hospital. The Herb Shop adorns the walls with beautiful tie dye tapestries. A djembe beat echo's through the hall. Communiversity's annual event since 1999 features a plethora of alternative-health practitioners ready to share their knowledge, experience and philosophies with the public. This March they will host over 60 exhibitors and 20 workshops. Barbara Criswell, owner of Aquarius, is a regular exhibitor at the fair. She is especially impressed with the non-commercial nature of the gathering and the

sense of community the fair inspires. "People come to the Communiversity Health Fair as a way to enhance and expand their lives, not out of a sense of neediness." The exhibitors at the health fair are a diverse group willing to share information, samples and services. Ex-hibitors include acupuncturists, chiropractors, publica-tions, meditation groups, yoga studios, massage practitio-ners, new age retail stores and many more. Also, the psy-chics from KKFI radio will offer psychic readings at the fair. In addition to the many exhibitors at our fair, they offer some great workshops at a bargain price. You can take three workshops for $5 if you pre-register by calling

Communiversity. This spring workshops will include: T'ai Chi, An Introduction to Visual Health Evaluation, A Council of Grandmothers Panel Discussion, Treatment Solutions for Foot and Knee Pain, Postural Problems and Their Consequence, Phytonutrients-The Good Stuff in Fruits and Vegetables, Using Kundalini Energy in Spiri-tual Healing, Creative Abundance, and many more. You can find an array of innovative health concepts on the top floor of UMKC's University Center on Sunday, March 20th from 11:00 AM until 6 PM. Call 816-235-1448, pick up a catalog of upcoming classes and the show guide at any public library or visit our website www.umkc.edu/commu for more information.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 5 March 2011

I t’s February, the hungry month in many Native American traditions and I’m not doing too bad. Each year I discover more ways to make

it through the winter with fresh, live local food. I’ve grown sprouts from cruciferous and root vegetable seeds like broccoli, kale and radish in my kitchen for a few years now since Steve Mann of Squash Blossom Cooperative turned me on to the idea. I add them to salads and smoothies for their green power and life force. Now I know I was just skimming the surface. One week ago, my husband returned from Memphis just raving about Belewa’s Vegan Gourmet, where most of the menu is sprouted. The food was so tasty, so alive, that it cleared his vision, a sign that his liver was function-ing better. He has another favorite place, Amitabul Korean Vegan Cuisine in Chi-cago where the food also clears his vi-sion. He always orders sprout soup there. He brought the menu home and I was fascinated. My husband raved about Phyre, a combination of sprouted chick-peas (also known as garbanzo beans), mung beans, lentils with spirulina, to-matos and the Live Burger, a sprouted vegetable patty served on an Ezekiel sprouted grain bread bun with tomato, lettuce, onion, mustard, walnut spread and ketchup. So of course I had to try this at home. I chose to create the Marinated Sprout Medley, chick peas, wheat berries, lentils and mung beans in I presume some sort of marinade. The sprouts were ready in three days, after which I topped them with olive oil and a splash of sherry vine-gar. What a fresh, live delight. It left me feeling bright and energized. My taste buds thought it was May! We’ve been eating a tablespoon size heap with lunch and dinner, sometimes with chopped

olives or sun-dried tomatoes thrown in. Here’s the blessing of Belewa’s sprouts. Dried peas, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and grains are cheap and easily stored. Just add water to transform them into fresh, live, tasty nourish-ment. No cooking skill needed. Google “benefits of sprouts” for information on their health benefits. If you can turn on the faucet, you can sprout. All you need is a mason jar, a rim and some cheesecloth. Once you decide you like sprouting you can order plastic rims and stainless steel mesh screens from sproutpeople.org, which avoid rust and are easier to clean. Place the seeds you want to sprout in the mason jar no more than 1/4 full. Fill the jar with wa-ter, place the cheesecloth over the open-ing and fasten it in place with the rim. Allow the seeds to soak over-night. The next day, drain the water out through the cheese cloth. Then rinse your sprouts by filling the jar with water through the cheesecloth and then drain-ing it. Repeat once more. Set the jar up-side down at an angle for the day. A glass pie dish works well for this. Repeat the rinsing procedure morning and eve-ning. In as little as one to two days the seeds will break and you’ll see tails ap-pearing—the seeds are sprout-ing. They’re ready to eat anytime after that.

D r. Peter J. D’Adamo is a naturopathic doctor and author of the book, “Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type.” The subtitle of this book is, "The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying

Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight.” I have been interested in this theory about nutrition and health for over 15 years and recently reviewed this topic. As Dr, D’Adamo says in his book, “What would you say if I told you that the secret to healthy, vigorous, and disease-free living might be as simple as knowing your blood type?”. And in his book, he shows us the simple answers. Your blood type is one of 4 types: Type O, A, B, or AB. Your blood type is a genetic fingerprint that identi-fies you as surely as your DNA. Your blood type can guide you how to live most healthfully. The significance of blood type can be found in human evolution: Type O is the oldest, hunter-gatherers, Type A is next, cultiva-tor-agrarians, Type B evolved as people became more nomadic, nomad-balancers, and most recent a modern intermingling of a variety of groups from types A and B, arrival of Type AB. Each blood type has certain characteristics, thrives on different nutrition, needs their own individualized exercise regimens and ways to deal with stress. With each blood type: Food recommendations are divided into 3 categories. The first category are beneficial foods, which act like medicine for the body, the second are neutral foods and the third category are foods to avoid. These foods to avoid can cause inflammation in the body and lead to chronic disease and stress on the sys-tem. Blood type O, the oldest blood type thrives on animal protein as they produce more hydrochloric acid to di-gest red meat. Type O people tend to be more physically strong, leaders, self-reliant and goal oriented. Intense physical exercise such as running, aerobics, contact sports and martial arts are helpful to de-stress the type O person. Foods to avoid are: wheat, dairy products, corn, navy beans, lentils, and cabbage. Most other vege-tables and fruits are beneficial, especially kelp, kale, spinach and broccoli. More complete lists of all foods can be found in several of Dr. D’Adamo’s books. Blood type A is the blood type that evolved when people started settling down in communities from 25,000 to 15,000 BC. Type A’s tend to be cooperative,

sensitive, orderly and settled. They have little need for animal food and emphasizing vegetables is very benefi-cial. To reduce stress, yoga or gentle exercises and tak-ing naps or frequent breaks help to stay relaxed and focused. Type A’s can do well with soy foods, compared to other types and need vegetables, with the exception of the night shade family which includes tomatoes, po-tatoes, peppers and eggplant. To lose weight and foods to avoid include: red meat, dairy, wheat, kidney beans and lima beans. Blood Type B developed sometime between 10,000 and 15,000 BC in response to climate changes as people began to be nomads. Type B is the most balanced blood

type and the personality is flexible, creative and engi-neering. Type B has a strong immune system and is versatile. Beneficial foods are lamb, salmon, milk, grains, fruits and vegetables. Moderate physical exer-cise with a mental component such as hiking, cycling, tennis and swimming are ideal for this blood type. To achieve weight loss, type B’s need to avoid chicken, lob-ster, wheat, corn, lentils, peanuts, sesame seeds and buckwheat. Blood Type AB is the rarest blood type and was first found in 2500 BC and became more common 1,000 years ago. AB is for modern and emerged from the in-termingling of Type A and Type B persons. The AB blood type has a mysterious personality, is highly sensi-tive and can be an enigma. Exercise varies from calm-ing, centering exercises such as yoga or Tai chi com-bined with moderate physical exercise. Beneficial foods include: turkey, seafood, soy, greens and kelp. To lose weight, foods to avoid for this blood type are: red meat, kidney beans, lima beans, seeds, corn and buckwheat. Peter J. D’Adamo, N.D. states in his book, Live Right 4 Your Blood Type that “Each blood-type life prescrip-tion shows how, according to blood type, you should adapt your lifestyle, deal with stress, and put into prac-tice the right strategies for aging, to achieve emotional balance, maximize your health, and overcome disease.” I recommend that you consider reading more about this nutritional and life advice. Give it a try for a month or two and see how your health changes.

D id you know Albert Ein-stein. (l879-1955) dropped out of school in the 8th grade? His parents became

poor and he needed to work. He went back to school later but hated classes so much he quit to study physics on his own. He found a low-paying job in a patent office. He started reading those patent applications. Then he went to the library and read books noted in the footnotes. He read and learned. He used wisdom beyond mere cognition. He wondered what right did he, this school drop-out, have to think and learn reading these kinds of papers? Yet he kept on. He focused on where it would lead him rather than what it could get him. He didn’t understand what the future might become. It’s similar to our Yoga School dedicated students and especially those in teachers’s training. We often have no idea where this complex knowledge will take us, but we enjoy the discovery anyway. The story of Einstein is how he discovered the theory of relativity, (his bold hypothesis concerning the particle nature of light) is this: He had a dream of what it would be like to a ride on a light beam. Think about this. Here this young man holds a dead-end job; but, he had a perception of what is possible despite dropping out of school. He was considered by many to be, what we would call today, a geek. Yet, he looked to possibilities of knowing. He had persistence. He was willing to dream. He always said my greatest gift is my imagination not what he knew. He wrote a paper. And based on that was later to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in l922. Eventually, he was awarded a doctorate degree in phys-ics which led to his teaching at Princeton University. There is within his story the gift of letting go of control and struggle. I use his example of how any one may choose to grow. Einstein was able to look beyond the limitations. He did not worry about getting a masters degree. He chose to write many theo-ries and stand behind them. With that, all kinds of opportunities were

opened to him. He gave it quality of heart and soul, having no idea it would lead to his historic label of The Father of Modern Physics. Being human, I’m sure he had to feel confused, uncomfortable, am-biguous and uncertain. Yet, he was willing to pursue. He developed more equations and theories and all were disproved. And he was wrong, wrong, and wrong again. He died without ever finding it. But what he discov-ered along the way in his willingness to be wrong is nothing short of mi-raculous. He devoted his time and skills to the pursuit of what he thought were right, and good, and true, and beautiful. He built his self-esteem enough to awaken his genius. He is one of my heroes. I wish I had known him. A student/friend last night shared as I talked of this story, “Did you know he bought all the same kind of clothing of suits and shirts and ties so he never had to stress over what to wear?” Ahhh, what freedom. My hero.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth

—Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

D id you know that you travel roads in your brain called neural pathways? Clusters of neurons or nerve cells,

the core of the nervous system, work together to create memories, beliefs or learned behaviors. The connected neu-rons are called neural pathways. Neu-ral pathways are created through ex-periences. Our emotional response to an experience is what creates our unique perspective. Since our brains are wired to detect danger we respond more to negativity or threat than to pleasurable experi-ence. One could say we are hard-wired to expect catastrophe. Our fears can often overshadow positive thoughts. As negative neural pathways are formed, we may become addicted to our emotional and physical pain. What can we do to learn new behav-iors; create new neural pathways? According to researcher, Ted Able, 60 percent of what we fear never oc-curs; 20 percent of our fears are about the past. Ten percent of all of our fears are petty things, which make little difference. Only 4-5 percent of the last 10 percent of fears are actual threats. Mark Twain gives us a humorous way to look at our fears. “I have been through some terrible things in my life--some of which have actually hap-pened.” This brings us to the fork in the road. We know we have the choice of responding to the fear pathway in the brain or learning a different re-sponse to stress or threat that creates a positive pathway; this is the less traveled road. We can learn skills that will help us to change our brain, our thoughts and, consequently, our be-havior. There are three widely researched and effective non-drug approaches to reduce emotional and physical pain. The first is relaxation, beginning with deep breathing instead of short, shal-low breathing. Breathe deep into the diaphragm. As you take the deeper breath, you will notice that your neck and shoulders relax automatically. There are exercises that can assist you

in progressively relaxing each muscle in the body. Cognitive techniques help us divert attention from the pain, re-directing us and helping us form those new pathways. Imagery, meditation and affirmative statements, especially when used together can be powerful ways to begin changes. Practice rein-forces those changes. Biofeedback is another tool that gives us physiological information about our bodies. Nearly forty years ago I learned to warm my hands. A temperature meter gave me the feed-back of my skin temperature. Com-bined with suggestive phrases like, “My hands are warm, warmth is flow-ing into my hands. My whole body is feeling warm, heavy and relaxed,” my finger temperature rose, registering on the meter. Practice made this a habit that I use today. Combining relaxation, cognitive approaches and biofeedback can be very powerful. Some highly researched and effective approaches are EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), the popular EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), Ericksonian Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and Dr. John Leonard’s Neurobehavioral Pro-grams. If you want a higher level of well-ness; want to change your addiction to physical or emotional pain by creating new neural pathways, then begin your journey by breathing more deeply, re-frame your reactions (old neural path-ways) creating a new image that is positive and hopeful. You will feel more in charge, better able to self-calm and self- regulate. If you need assistance, there are many health professionals to guide you in this journey to wellness as you choose the road less traveled.

A t first glance, hand drumming may seem to be a questionable endeavor as an alternative well-ness therapy. How can hitting a

drum make a difference in a person’s health? But, what if drumming could actu-ally change your immune system at the cell level? Who Uses Drum Therapy? Who Uses Drum Therapy? Who Uses Drum Therapy? Who Uses Drum Therapy? Drumming therapy is being used as a companion treatment for cancer, cardiac and asthma patients. It is also being used with Alzheimer’s sufferers, Parkinson’s patients, at-risk teenagers, autistic children, addicts, traumatized war veterans, prison-ers, long term caretakers, corporate execu-tives and people suffering from stress-related illnesses. Blood samples taken from participants before and after a group music making session, showed actual increases in cancer and virus fighting cells. Researchers from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and Applied Biosystems, the developers of the original technology for mapping the human genome were involved in a study of sound therapy through a keyboard. It was lead by cancer expert, Barry Bittman, M.D. of the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, PA. Results published in Medical Science Monitor, February 2005 showed the Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-to-cortisol ratios, lymphonkin-activated killer( LAK) and natural killer (NK) cell activity increased. “We showed for the very first time that we could turn off the DNA-based switches that literally turn on components of human stress response,” says Muham-med A. Sharaf, Ph.D. Senior Staff Scientist at Applied Biosystems. Active MeditationActive MeditationActive MeditationActive Meditation How could hitting a hand drum affect a person’s body chemistry? Those practicing meditation may see the connection. By hit-ting the drum in the same pattern over and over it can create a meditative state similar

to following the in and out pattern of the breath. The physi-cal and mental requirement needed to par-ticipate in drum therapy is a giant mirror of the mind-body connection seen in alterna-tive therapies. One of Dr. Quinn’s patients, a Viet Nam veteran who has long suffered from high stress, hyper vigilance and chronic sleep problems, had participated in 15 biofeedback sessions with no increase of alpha brainwave. But after one 30 minute session of slow, gentle hand drumming, his patient’s alpha brain-waves doubled. Alpha brain waves are asso-ciated with feelings of well-being and euphoria. People with lower than normal or have no Alpha brainwaves have much more mental stress. Over nine years of research he had found no process able to bring sig-nificant production of Alpha waves in any of his clients until testing drumming. Hand drumming allows a space to release, forgive, heal and re-energize. The drummer has no goal but to stay in the present moment. Hand drumming therapy has been docu-mented to increase immune system activity, increase Alpha brainwave production and reduce disease causing stress. These studies show us that Drum Therapy facilitated by a music therapist can create new pathways in the brain circumventing old damaged ones and laying new highways to wellness within the brain as well as manufacturing wellness within the body. Spiritual Healing in Today's World vs. The Ancient Way

By Kim Meisinger

"Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams.

Who looks inside, awakens." —Carl Jung

F or our purposes we will define a spiritual journey as a process that one regularly engages in to dis-mantle our masks, belief systems and stored emo-tional baggage that stands between who we think

we are or should be, and our authentic self. Did you know that the ancient way of all spiritual heal-ing treatment came from spiritual technique to help some-

one move further on their journey? Now it is reversed. For the most part, energetic treatments are being used on the sick and illness is being used as a spiritual journey in a culture that has no spiritual journey anymore. Since the West has lost it's belief in a spiritual essence, it now uses the lessons of the disease for its spiritual growth. With consistent practices for spiritual growth, you would have greater separation between illness and soul suffering. Now the two together can take everything from you in or-der to humble you into submission to your soul. So what we must master together as persons interested in evolving (especially if we are in a care-giving role) is to take energy for ourselves for our own evolution on a regu-lar basis. Why? You are better able to get the energy of faith when you are not desperately sick or chronically depleted. When something helps you move forward, you then have it as a resource instead of a fall behind. Energy renewal once per month will rejuvenate and highlight areas that have become stagnate that could later manifest as illness. A quarterly renewal can be used as a time to examine your own self-care and make small changes in terms of diet, emotional support, thought pat-terns and review of spiritual practices that sustains. And

finally, once a year, devote 72 hours to silence, rest and deep spiritual communion. We plan our next meal, our celebrations and our holi-days. Its time to start putting a plan in place for energy renewal, celebration and developing better habits of self care. It is one of the best preventative tools! And did I men-tion... it feels so good to be full of life-giving energy!

Kim Meisinger is a third generation practitioner of the healing arts. She offers individual sessions (both local and distance), integrates diverse

techniques and specializes in nervous system energy work. Internship

opportunities are available for other healers.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 10 March 2011

A s I’ve worked with Hands-on-Healing for

many years, one of the questions I often

get is how does this work and how can I

benefit from using it? To give a compre-

hensive answer to that, I will start with the model we

use of being human.

We view a person as having 3 distinct interrelated

aspects: a Spirit/Consciousness, an Energy Field and a

Physical Body. When we are born, our spirit takes on a

physical body to be able to accomplish tasks in the

physical world. Think of the movie Ghost, where Patrick

Swayze, as a ghost, couldn’t move the penny across the

floor. He no longer had a body to move physical objects.

He was able to relearn how much effort and energy it

took to do that without a body to help out. When we are

alive, we have these three aspects of ourselves to work

together to move about and accomplish what we are

here to do.

So let’s look at how we do that. To pick up a penny

off the floor, we first think about doing it, then we direct

our energy field to move an electrical impulse through

our central nervous system to the muscles in our body

to move in such a way as to bend over, reach out our

arm and hand, open our fingers, grasp the coin, hold it

and raise our body up to place the penny in our pocket.

We use our energy field and body to accomplish what

our consciousness asks it to do. Our thoughts and inten-

tions are the key here. Each thought creates a response

in the energy field, which, in turn directs a biological

process to happen. Some of these responses are volun-

tary, such as picking up the penny and some are invol-

untary, such as breathing, heart action and the stress

response.

If we look at the link between our thoughts and our

overall health, lets consider the concept of stress and

how that relates to our energy field. When we have a

pleasant thought, it is generally translated in the energy

field as smooth, warm and free flowing. If we have a

distressed or angry thought, it registers in the energy

field as possibly hard, sharp and stagnant. In our healer

training classes, we have an exercise where we have a

student stand behind a sitting student who is directed to

have pleasant or distressing thoughts. As the thoughts

are shifted, virtually every student can perceive a shift

in the size, shape and texture of the sitting person's

energy. Think about how you felt when you walked into

a room at a joyous occasion vs. when you walked into a

room after an argument had just happened. When we

have stressors in our life, it shows up in the energy field

as the stagnant energy we can feel in others and in our-

selves.

Because we store this stress in our energy field, lets

look at what stress does to our physical processes. In an

article by Harrison Wein, PhD in the National Institute

of Health’s News in Health, Jan 2007 titled Stressed Out? Stress Affects Both the Body and Mind, describing

the physical reactions of stress in our bodies. “When we

sense danger, our bodies quickly release hormones like

adrenaline into our bloodstream that increase our heart

rate, focus our attention and cause other changes to

quickly prepare us for the coming danger. Stress was

and still is crucial to our survival.” The article went on to

quote Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University,

“Hyperactivity of the stress response results in changes

over time in the circuitry of the brain.” The article points

out that brain cells bombarded by stress signals have

little recovery time and eventually start to shrink and

cut connections to other brain cells.

In another article by Harrison Wein, PhD. on Medi-

cineNet.com titled Stress and Disease, he pointed out the

areas of the body affected by stress: Brain, Immune Sys-

tem, Muscles and Joints, Heart, Stomach, Pancreas, In-

testines and the Reproductive System. Think back to a

time when you were under stress and remember how

these areas of your body felt.

So, how does our energy field and hands-on-healing

relate to this? What we experience, as healers, is that

these stressors are stored in the energy field. As we

have events happen in life that we don’t have the time

or ability to “let go of,” we perceive distorted areas in

the client’s energy field related to the stress of those

events. As the areas in the energy field hold more and

more of that stress, the body parts affected by that part

of the energy field show the signs of distress described

in the articles above.

In working with our hands-on-healing clients, what

they experience is the release of those stressors in their

life. An example is a client who had physical knots in

muscle tissue that repeated massage sessions would not

release. During a healing session, I connected with the

energetic block that was in the muscle knot and was

able to release the energy stuck there and the muscle

relaxed on its own, without any manipulation. The client

experienced the immediate permanent relaxation of the

knot. Sometimes, but not always, the client will also

experience the emotion behind the blockage as it is re-

leased.

The stressors may not always release so quickly or

dramatically as the above example, but the clients gen-

erally find the sessions very relaxing, so much so that

they fall asleep during the session.

Through the Kansas City Healing Project, we have

teamed up with the Midwest Cancer Center for the last

several years. Our cancer clients there have been report-

ing back to the center staff, that they have had a signifi-

cant reduction in anxiety, pain and fatigue as they move

through their treatments.

What our clients experience in general is that they

are able to let go of the stress from their lives; and in

the process, they are able to heal more quickly.

structor of the Core

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 11 March 2011

T his will not be your typical boring health article that says you need to take more Vitamin C, join a gym and

work out every day. Everybody read-ing this already knows you should exercise, drink quality water, eat fruits and vegetables and practice stress-reducing techniques. I want to give you something more…here are the top five easy things you can start doing tomorrow that can im-mediately improve your health. Ok, I’ll be honest, the first one isn’t nec-essarily that easy, but it’s critically important. Step One: Live On Purpose Many people don’t have a lot of motivation in life. Often, those with health concerns don’t necessarily want to get better. Discovering your purpose in life can help you do great things. Why? God has a plan for you, whether you like it or not, and when you discover it, life suddenly be-comes amazing! Let me tell you first where you will NOT find your purpose. We live in a world of dis-tracting, mindless entertainment, including TV, movies, video games and the newest phone gadgets. Our minds are altered by pharmaceutical drugs that weaken, damage and break down our body. Suddenly, we become zombies to flashing lights, neato gadgets, mind altering legal drugs, slick salesmen and advertise-ments. We forget how to think for ourselves. I challenge anyone to break free from the chains of “advanced” and “modern” technology and spend quiet time alone. Search for purpose. Without it, even finding the desire to achieve beautiful, amazing, vi-brant health is a stretch. When you find purpose, the transformation is powerful. Suddenly you want to build something, make something, create something, manifest some-thing and you become a bright, shin-

ing light for others! Your purpose may be as simple as achieving great health to see your grandchildren grow up or focusing on making a better life for future generations by joining the movement for a quality, safe food supply. Life isn’t an acci-dent. It’s on purpose! Step Two: Get Grounded There is a mind-blowing wave of research happening with grounding technologies. How simple is it to re-connect to the earth? Our disconnect from the earth has sent a shockwave of negative health effects throughout society. What we used to live, work and sleep on 24/7 (the bare earth), we now rarely touch. Research shows touching the earth begins im-mediate re-mineralization of the body, helping to prevent and/or re-verse osteoporosis. Earthing benefits the entire glandular system, but spe-cifically the thyroid. People are com-ing off thyroid medications simply by getting grounded. Grounding will vastly improve sleep (remember what it was like to sleep like a baby?), normalize cortisol levels and reduce and/or eliminate pains from the body. It’s cheap and easy. If walking around barefoot all day isn’t your cup of tea, buy grounding pads or sheets. They are affordable, plug into the ground plug of your outlet (no electricity is involved at all) and you can sleep eight hours each night receiving the infinite supply of en-ergy from the earth. Sound too good to be true? TRY IT. Step Three: Heal and Regener-ate I could talk forever on the bene-fits of so many amazing plants, herbs and supplements, but I am going to focus on just one. Although I never profess any one single thing to be the miracle answer for all problems, this one comes real close. Deer Antler. Deer Antler dramati-

cally increases energy levels by building the adrenal glands, im-proves sleep, reduces wrinkles, in-creases mental clarity, reduces pain, relieves depression, increases libido, increases athletic performance, in-creases bone density, speeds heal-ing, boosts the immune system, im-proves strength and quality of hair, skin and nails, stabilizes blood sugar and that barely scratches the sur-face. The velvet tips are collected from a pristine source in New Zea-land, no animals are harmed in any way, and I have yet to see one, single person not benefit from this amaz-ing fountain of youth product. The source is of utmost important so please do your research or ask a knowledgeable practitioner. Step Four: Go Green Ok, everyone knows to eat your greens, but the emphasis here is critical. I always give the example of a fish tank. If you forget to clean the tank or the filter gets clogged, stuff starts to grow and the fish get sick. You don’t examine the fish checking for lung problems, liver failure and poor circulation; you change the wa-ter! Most people are very acidic and the way to rectify that is oxygen and minerals. The easiest way to do that is take your greens! When you get up in the morning, drink two big glasses of water. Next, either pre-pare a vegetable juice drink with celery, cucumbers, etc. or take a heaping tablespoon of a quality greens powder blend and drink up. Chances are you won’t even need to eat breakfast. You are dehydrated in the morning, not hungry. Even if you don’t eat the perfect diet, this will give you a great head start! Step Five: Power Up One thing I have discovered with tonic herbalism is that we just don’t do enough. We go to a health food store, buy a bottle of x,y,z and take

two capsules expecting a miracle. That is pharmaceutical drug mental-ity (take two and call me in the morning). With tonic herbs, take 2 Tablespoons or 20 capsules per day, and call me in a month! Make sure you talk to a trained herbalist about which herbs are best and safe for what you need. Now, as with any-thing, start small and work up, like ½ tsp per day but steadily increase up to 2-3 Tablespoons if you like. Here are some options: • Stress, anxiety, poor energy, weak

adrenal glands–Holy Basil • Thyroid issues, re-occurring cold

and flu, kidney problems, poor immune system–Astragalus and Ashwagandha

• Weak immune system, overall weakness and lethargy, liver prob-lems, extreme fatigue–Reishi and Chaga Mushrooms

• Athlete, wanting to increase per-formance–Shilajit, Ashwagandha and He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti)

These are but a few ideas to help you get started. Enjoy yourself. Have fun on your road to wellness.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Happy birthday Pisces! You’ll have major shifts in self-esteem and personal empower-ment this year! Uranus is the planet of radical change and will shake up your self image for the better. You’ll be able to shatter co-dependent patterns and clearly define boundaries in relationships. You could also get a new job that pays you what you’re worth and celebrates your many talents. In general, you’re going to like being in your own skin!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Uranus is moving into your sign. This planet of revolutionary change has an eighty-four year orbit, so this is a big deal! Use your meditation time to visualize new life goals. See yourself in a fresh light. Anything is possi-ble now, so dream big! It’s also important to forgive and release old anger and disappoint-ments so you can move ahead without drag-ging the past into your future. Open up to new relationships, new attitudes, new activities and new thought patterns!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You have great opportunities to take huge leaps with your intuition – it is growing fast! It’s important to devote some time each day to meditation or quiet reflection, even if it’s just a few minutes. Your mind may be more scattered than usual, but be accepting of this. So much energy is pouring into you that it could be disruptive. But you’ll definitely re-ceive guidance, even if your mind isn’t still. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You’ll be making new friends and getting excited about new activities. These people will be linked with you ethically and you’ll have important things in common, even though you’ll also have fun together. When you have meaning in your life and in your relation-ships, you feel more balanced, focus and joy-ous. You could also get a promotion at work, since your mind is so inspired and sharp.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Your heart is open and you’re trusting the Universe. This sense of security will help you make daring changes at work. You might summon the courage to speak up about great ideas you have with someone who usually intimidates you. Maybe you could be willing to confront a disrespectful co-worker–or reach out of your comfort zone and look for a new job. You’ll also be able to set healthy emotional boundaries with family members and in romantic relationships. Feeling spiri-tual centered helps you make strong changes!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) If single, you might meet a new love and a spiritual event, like yoga class or a meditation workshop. If partnered, you’ll be eager to have your mate join you in spiritual activities.

This connection can make your relationship so much more exciting – it’s a new frontier to explore together. You might even start to study forms of spiritual sexuality, like Tantra or Taoist practices. Have fun!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You are very intuitive, but you can also be worrisome or even slightly paranoid. Medita-tion helps you discern between true soul guid-ance and negative ego talk. Trusting your soul, and letting go of old fear tapes improves close relationships–and helps you feel more relaxed in your own skin. Anxiety isn’t an emotion used to guide you spiritually. Daily soul connection will give you all the informa-tion you need when you need it, so you can relax and enjoy life!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Throw out all your old ideas of relationships, because everything is changing! Uranus is setting you free from limiting thoughts and destructive beliefs. If single, you can meet a person that shakes you up and challenges you to be your highest self. If partnered, let go of the past so you can see him/her with new eyes and experience them in the present moment. As a Libra, releasing romance drama is a challenge because you thrive on it. What hap-pens if it’s all smooth and fulfilling?

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Explore creative ideas for stress management and health improvement. Even if the methods seem strange, give them a try. You also could be starting a new relationship, or experienc-ing a second honeymoon in your current connection. If you have any artistic interests, it’s a good time to cultivate that part of your personality. In general, it’s a great time to break out of ruts and enjoy life!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You could be starting an exciting relationship! You could also be reconnecting with your divine joy in terms of hobbies, sports or crea-tivity. Daily meditation will also give you peace of mind as well as intuitive directions to take in terms of career and finances. You could also have breakthroughs about child-hood issues that hold you back from being the fun soul that you are. You can shake off these negative habits and thoughts in order to ex-press your true happy self!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) It’s very important to be walking your spiri-tual talk both at home and at work – not just at yoga class! Meditate each day so you’ll develop your “observer self”. You’ll be able to see where you slip into automatic negative patterns before you’re too far into them. Be-ing able to live your truth and model for spiri-tual growth for others will help your self es-teem. Also this month, you can have a little windfall or financial blessing come your way!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Let the Universe heal you in regards to your attitudes about relationships. Just throw every preconceived notion out of your head – even the ones that seem “true” because of your life history. This is time for big changes, so make your mind a blank slate and see what positive experiences unfold. Now you’ll have a new “karmic story” that nurtures your heart energy, rather than limits it!
