From the Vicarage March

Although I’m new to Finedon, it’s not new to me. I made my first television

appearance here in, I think, 1974. The leather room at the shoe factory

on Wellingborough Rd - was it then called A. Nutt and Co? - caught fire

and my Dad and I came to watch the blaze. Look East came too and in a BBC vault somewhere in Norwich there’s footage of me aged twelve

waving idiotically at the camera in a blue anorak while everyone else

struggled to save Finedon from the flames.

I hope my second appearance here, as your new Parish Priest, is less

inflammatory; and while I’ll certainly try to be less idiotic, your patience

would be greatly appreciated as I settle in. I’m from this part of the

world, born in Northampton, grew up near Kettering, went to school in

Wellingborough, so I’m au fait with local customs and speak the lingo, me dook. And I have family connections here going back a hundred years or so, when my grandfather, heading back to Burton on his new Norton

motorbike, accelerated rather than braked at the bottom of Station

Road. If he hadn’t landed softly the Coles connection would have ended

there and then.

I’m very glad to pick up where he left off, and for the chance to renew my

acquaintanceship with Finedon and to get to know all of you, not least

because of the immensely impressive way you’ve kept the show on the

road during the interregnum, maintaining the presence of the church, the

hope of the gospel, and the life of Jesus Christ, at the heart of this

community. I very much look forward to sharing in that great work with

you.

Yours in Christ,

Fr Richard.

Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday 9th March we will be holding the service of the Imposition of the Ashes in the church at 7.30 pm Please can you return your Palm crosses to church during the next four weeks in order to make the ashes. A basket for the crosses will left on the pew as you come into Church.

Interment of Ashes in the Churchyard

The PCC has applied for a faculty for a new site to inter ashes. One of the reasons is that at the Flower Festival the area below the ashes is used for a tea tent and the line of ashes is about to encroach on that area. The Flower festival is an important event. It not only celebrates the birthday of our Church but helps to raise funds to keep it in good structural order. We do not want people sitting drinking tea on people's ashes in the future. The new site is proposed and approved by the Diocesan Advisory Committee and will be inside the lych gate at the top of Molly's Wall and at the bottom of the old school by the side gate. If anyone has any objections will they please sign the yellow form displayed on the notice boards either inside or outside the Church and

their reasons for objecting. This form will be displayed from the 13th February inside and outside the church until 13th March in accordance with the law. This does not apply to anyone who in the future will join their loved ones already interred in the present position. If you need further clarification please speak to a Churchwarden or a member of the PCC.

Lalruotlien

Lalruothlien is young boy in India whose education we at St. Mary’s Church sponsor. Each year we send a small gift for his birthday and Christmas present with appropriate letter and cards. In an effort to understand and care for the environment the sponsored children have planted a sapling in their sponsors name. It is their hope that the sapling will grow and benefit more children in the future. Lalruothlien has made a leaf rubbing from a leaf from our tree that he has planted in India and says ‘Together lets make a greener tomorrow”. He asks if our children can plant a sapling for him in England and can we send a picture.

East Northants Faith group

Right on our door step valuable work is being done in the community by the East Northants Faith group. This is a variety of Churches and faiths working together in partnership with the Local Government in the community. Little is known about the marvellous work they are developing throughout the area. In 2008 Street Pastors were set up in Rushden to fight crime and since they began their patrols crime in Rushden has decreased by 65%. The Street Pastor idea has since spread across the country with much success. Part of the Faith Groups work involves a night shelter in Rushden which provides 4 beds for homeless people and a ‘moving on’ supported housing scheme. Advice is given to homeless people in the area as to where they can receive help, information and guidance. Following the night shelter project the Cornfield Cafe has sprung up as a community drop in centre which provides support services. The group has extended its facilities to a food distribution scheme to assist the poor and needy, recycling service, unwanted furnishings for those who cannot afford to buy and many other worthwhile projects. This is faith working in our community To learn more about the Faith group go to:- www.enfg.org.uk www.homelessbob.org.uk

In My DayIn My DayIn My DayIn My Day the ramblings of Hubert James

In my day it was about this time of year when we used to have the annual shoe fayre. See it was that long ago, there was still a 'y' in fayre. Course in them days we still made shoes in the county. Well when I said we made them, I was more into wearing them. You see in my day everyone used to wear shoes. Proper shoes with leather and everything. There

was none of this synthetic stuff. Trainers was something that Racehorses had, not something you put on your feet to make them all sweaty. The fayre was held to celebrate everything about the humble shoe. And we put it on because as you all know the shoe was invented in Northampton and Finedon invented the shoe lace. And when someone eventually thought of making them in pairs, we was quids in. My favourite shoes were designed by a Scoutmaster, Nobby Clarke from Artlenock. To get his scouts interested in animals he came up with TUF shoes for kids. TUF stood for Tracks Under Foot. The soles had animal tracks on them and a compass in the heel. There was a scare when someone reckoned the Pits had been invaded by strange alien creatures with 27 paws. But turned out the Cubs had been camping. One reason shoe making took off here was the wide variety of leather we had. That was because we had some very odd animals.

Things like Bozeat Blue pigs that gave us blue suede shoes. Denford Donkeys with bright pink fluffy manes that gave us Mules.

The last fayre ever was opened by Charlie Chaplin and coincided with lace rationing in the late forties. Charlie suggested we import laces from the liquorice fields of Pontefract. He’d used them in The Gold Rush. There was a bit of confusion ’cause someone asked him if they were any good and he said, “tasty”. It turned out he was right.

Page 15: March 2011

But they weren’t very practical unless you got peckish at morning break and fancied a long thin snack. Course, everyone knows that different jobs in the shoe industry had unusual names. I had a summer job with a herd of Wollaston Winkle miniature cows. Funny little things that shed their skin in June. The skin made a much sought after soft leather. Us kids had the job of collecting the shed skins from the meadow. The farmer gave us a nickname. We was called Winkle Pickers. Sunday after church, a mother asked her very young daughter what the Sunday school lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilt" Needless to say, the mother was perplexed. Later in the day, the vicar stopped by for tea and the mother asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming."
