C C O O s s C C o o r r n n e e r r Greetings to all G'TOWN Family Members, It's been a busy deployment so far and it is remarkable to see how far we've come in a year. This time in 2010 we were still in EDPMA working on a dozen repairs and preparing for Sea Trials. Now we have completed a major multi-national exercise, had two very successful foreign port visits, and are now on our way to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to Japan. An impressive feat and I am very proud of this crew. As we continue this mission off Japan please be aware there will be times when communications will be restricted and emails may be slow. Additionally, there have been restrictions placed on sites such as Facebook due to bandwidth limitations and operational security. When we are able to restore communications and social media website, we will but everyone needs to understand the importance of OPSEC, so please be patient. XO’S MESSAGE GERMANTOWN Families and Friends, Wow, what a month! We finished Exercise Cobra Gold strong and had the crew’s first foreign port visit in almost 3 years in Laem Chebang, Thailand. As always, your Sailors performed excellent on liberty and represented the United States and the Navy well. From there we had a short notice port visit in Surabaya, Indonesia. What a reception! When we pulled up to the pier they had a band and native Thai dancers to welcome us. Well over 50 media organizations were there to report on our arrival and interview the Captain. We were Big News! The crew was proud to show off the ship to over 1,100 visitors and hosted a reception for 250 guests to include the Vice Governor of Surabaya, over 60 Generals and Admirals of the Indonesian Armed Forces, and the U.S. Embassy Consular General. Everyone who attended, and I am not exaggerating when I say everyone, remarked that it was the best reception they had attended with the best food! Our amazing cooks strike again! As you all know by now, we are headed north to do what we can to assist the people of Japan after the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami. We do not know yet what we’ll be tasked with but I know the GERMANTOWN Sailors will put their all into it and make a difference. Be proud of them for what they have accomplished and for what they will accomplish in the days ahead. And rest assured, despite what you may hear on the news, we will be safe and we will not be glowing in the dark when we get back! I always like recognizing Sailors who are doing an especially good job, but I’d have to name most of the crew! From the very undermanned LS’s to the behind-the-scenes ET’s and IT’s to all our unbeatable, unbreakable engineers, this crew is simply the hardest working, dependable examples of Honor, Courage, and Commitment! Please continue your support of these amazing Sailors and the great work they are doing. Stay safe, stay sane! Very Respectfully CDR Brian DeLaney Executive Officer USS GERMANTOWN (LSD-42)

Greeting to all G’TOWN Family Members, Since our last newsletter we have been quite busy. Including qualifying 10 new Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists; CS2 Fernandez, ET2 Kerchner, LS2 Lenhart, YN3 Hill, IT3 Moss, IC3 Thayer, EN3 Covarrubias, EN3 Phillips, ITSN Jackson, and OSSN Gould. Congratulations to these warriors for a significant milestone in their Navy career. Also, we had a cleansing of the ship of all Polly Wogs. Your loved ones will be coming home as Trusty Shellbacks. We are currently en route to assist with the Humanitarian relief efforts. We do not know how this will affect our schedule however, right now our prayers go out to the Japanese people. There are many families without their children and children without their parents. We will do our best to provide any relief as necessary. We will keep you informed as we get new and updated information. Hope to see everyone soon. Remember, do not stress over the things we cannot change. However, stress on the things we can change to make ourselves, families, command, country, and world a better place. Command Master Chief Re’

United Through Reading® Update There are so many benefits to reading aloud with your children. When you read aloud with your child you send them a message: that you value them and the time you spend with them. The bonding time that is associated with reading aloud is so important to your child’s emotional growth. You also show them that reading is an enjoyable activity and that you believe it is important. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to read along with the recording you have received. If you do not have a copy of the book, you can check it out from your local library. Let your sailor know their time was well spent. Complete the “Circle of Communication by sending feedback to your sailor about how the video is affecting

your child. Send a picture, an email, or even home video of your child interacting with the video of your Sailor/Marine/Soldier reading aloud. Let them know how much the video means and encourage them to make another tape! Also, don’t forget to let Ombudsman Tina Wright know your family’s reactions to the videos you receive.

OOmmbbuuddssmmaann’’ss CCoorrnneerr Greetings Families!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Spring is almost here!! Our sailors are staying busy out on the water and are, even now, doing good and representing our country in an honorable way. You, the families, have been a tremendous support to them and our command’s mission by holding strong and keeping things going back here on the home front. BZ!!

I want to take this time to urge you to pay special

attention to this newsletter. I know there is no real way to plan for some disasters but, with the recent happenings in Japan, I have included some Disaster Preparation information in this issue. Being prepared is half the battle and, as we have witnessed, you never know when a natural disaster can happen. Also, thank you all for your patience in waiting on word of our crew when the disaster hit and concerns ran high.

Please remember to take a moment and review the calendars in this newsletter and see the events and activities that are coming up in our surrounding area. Check out some of them and remember to stay busy, this will help you to continue to be strong. Also take note of meetings and any events that you might like to attend.

As always, I extend a warm welcome to our new families and family members as well as Fair Winds and Following Seas to those departing, you will be missed.

And, I hope you always remember

YOU ARE NOT ALONE and I am here for YOU!

Message from our Commanding Officer’s Spouse Greetings USS Germantown Families, We are well into month three of the deployment and I would like to thank you for your support of your sailor and patience with them during their time out to sea. I have heard nothing but good reports of our sailors performing their jobs and duties in an excellent manner. For this we should all be extremely proud. I encourage you to tell your loved ones how proud you are of them. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to all the new families that just joined us recently on the ship. Welcome Aboard! Welcome alsoto those family members who signed up to receive updates on e-mail and Facebook. These are two places where you will receive valuable information from Mrs. Tina Wright, USS Germantown Ombudsman and Angela Lopez, our FRG (Family Readiness Group) President and the Board. These ladies are "AWESOME!" I encourage you to thank them for planning many fun and exciting events by showing up. Many of them are listed in this newsletter. Remember, one of the "keys" to surviving any deployment is to keep busy. Watching the footage on TV from the earthquake and tsunami sent chills down my spine. Our prayers go out to all those affected by these recent catastrophic events. Our sailors are now faced with another "bigger" challenge. Keep in mind that our sailors are performing this very "noble" endeavor which is to provide humanitarian aid to those in need in Japan. They have been trained extensively and I have the utmost confidence that they will succeed in their current mission. Please look over this current newsletter for very important information from your Ombudsman about disaster preparedness. It is very valuable information for all of us to know about. I also encourage you to attend as many USS Germantown FRG events as possible where you will meet other family members and gather beneficial information for you and your families during your sailor's time out to sea. I am praying for all of you and look forward to seeing you all very soon! Warmly, Cecy Crary

Words of Blessings from Chaplain Kim Dear Germantown Families, Greetings from Southeast Asia! We have visited two ports since the last newsletter, and I led a total of over 110 volunteers from our Sailors and Marines to one Community Service Project in Thailand and two Community Relations Projects in Indonesia while other ships had average of 10 to 30 volunteers. Our Sailors and Marines of Germantown once again demonstrated exceptional spirit of sacrificial and compassionate volunteerism. In Thailand we served 50 HIV+ orphans at Abundant Life Home. Our Sailors and Marines collected donations and purchased food and hygiene products for the orphans and generously paid for the dinner fellowship with them. Also, with the funds provided by the 7th Fleet we bought a basketball hoop, guitars, and sound system. We played with the children and also helped them with their construction project of

expanding the orphanage. Everyone commented it was the best part of the port visit.

In Indonesia, we visited two high schools and spent some quality time with the students who asked us various questions about life in the military and America. We were even featured in Indonesia's largest newspaper. It was an eye-opening opportunity for us to learn about them and to appreciate all the blessings and freedoms we have in the States. Our Community Service/Relations Project definitely enhanced the image of our military and country and also highly boosted the morale of our Sailors and Marines. Some even found faith in the Lord as their hearts were humbled while interacting with the HIV+ orphans. We were undoubtedly touched and deeply blessed by the whole experiences. We received more than we gave to

the local populace. Right now we are heading toward the earthquake and tsunami stricken Japan. The Lord is good and cares for our Sailors and Marines and their families, so there is nothing to worry about. By God's grace we will make a difference in the lives of the Japanese people and once again make our families proud. This is why we joined the service: to help the helpless. Thank you for your prayerful support. Please continue to lift up all of us in your faithful and genuine prayer. We will not only come home safely but changed and matured. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe! In His Grace, LCDR Paul Kim Command Chaplain, USS Germantown

We have some upcoming celebrations and we invite you all to come and have some fun! We always have a good time at our events and meetings, and it is a great opportunity to meet people who are having similar experiences. First of all, the FRG is going to be holding a bake sale on March 18th and 19th from 9 am until 2 pm at the Fleet NEX on wet side and any help would be greatly appreciated. To discuss the results of the fundraiser and go over planning for our Halfway Party and Easter, we will be holding a meeting on Monday, March 21 at the Admiral Robinson Rec Center (the bowling alley on dry side) in the banquet room. From 5:30 to 6:30 we will do our normal social hour and then the meeting will proceed at 6:30.The Halfway Party is set for April 3 at the Admiral Prout Field from 2pm until 5pm. We will also be having an event for Easter on April 23 at the Admiral Prout Field from 1pm until 4 pm with an egg hunt and games. More details will be sent out in emails. If you would like to receive information from the FRG we ask that you please send us an email at [email protected]. Also, if you have any ideas or recommendations for fundraisers or events we welcome them and would like to see you at the meetings so we can hear them. In closing, I thought I would leave you with this quote, “No one's life is a smooth sail; we all come into stormy weather. But it's this adversity -- and more specifically, our resilience -- that makes us strong and successful.” I hope that you all continue to do well. Very Respectfully, Angela Lopez FRG President USS Germantown Family Readiness Group [email protected] 719-469-4686

Is Your Family Prepared for the Next Disaster?

Disasters can strike at a moment's notice so being prepared before they occur is an important step in ensuring the safety of you and your family.

• Create a household disaster plan. • Prepare first aid kits for the home and for each vehicle. • Create an emergency supply kit or grab-and-go bag. • Keep important papers in a fire-resistant carrying case and bring it with you in case of an emergency. • Create a roadside emergency kit for each automobile (breaking down while evacuating could leave you and your family in

worse shape than if you had simply done nothing).

Household Disaster Plan

• As a family, decide on two places to meet in case an emergency occurs in or near your home (one should be near your home; the other, outside of the neighborhood).

• Pick two out-of-town contacts (family, family friends) for the family to contact in case you become separated. • Prepare a checklist of important phone numbers, addresses, and contacts. • Develop a 'shelter in place" strategy in the event that evacuation is not an option. • Prepare an evacuation strategy for different types of disasters that may occur in your area. Practice each strategy with your

family several times a year. • Train all able-bodied family members in the use of CPR, fire extinguishers, and common first-aid procedures. • Ensure your yard is prepared for a disaster by trimming branches, replacing gravel or rock landscaping with light-weight mulch,

and checking for fire hazards. • Purchase a battery-operated radio or NOAA weather radio in case power is lost during a disaster.

Recommended Supplies for First Aid Kit

• A first aid manual • Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes • Cleansing agents such as isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, soap, antibiotic ointments • Several pairs of latex gloves • Petroleum jelly • Cotton Balls • Tweezers, needles, scissors • Moistened towelettes or baby wipes • Sunscreen • Thermometer.

Recommended Emergency Kit Supplies

• Prescription medications • Cash, traveler's checks, and loose change • A sleeping bag, blanket, and pillow for each family member. Keep additional blankets handy if you live in a cold-weather

climate • At least one additional change of clothing, including a long-sleeved shirt, pants, durable shoes, and gloves • A bottle of chlorine bleach and a medicine dropper can be used to create a disinfectant, or even drinking water if no other

options are available. For a disinfectant, combine nine parts water to one part bleach. To treat water, add 16 drops of bleach per gallon of water. Avoid scented or color-safe bleaches.

• A fire extinguisher • Waterproof matches and a lighter • Personal hygiene items • Paper plates, paper cups, plastic utensils, and paper towels • Paper, pens and pencils; books, magazines, videos, games, and puzzles • Batteries of various sizes and types • If you have pets, keep extra food and medicines on-hand. Also, have a travel crate ready for each pet in case you must

evacuate your home.

• A pocket knife, whistle • Dusk mask • Local maps.

Recommended Food for Emergency Supply Kit

• Dried meats (a good source of protein) • Canned fish and meat • Canned fruits and vegetables • Whole grain crackers (can be used in place of bread) • Nuts, granola bars, and/or dry cereals • Juice boxes • Electrolyte drinks • Enough water to sustain each family member for 72 hours • A bottle of multivitamins • A manual can opener • An assortment of Ziploc bags, Tupperware, and a roll of tinfoil • A small camping stove or grill that can be used for cooking.

Grab-and-Go Box Important papers that should be kept in a fireproof, waterproof container include:

• Copies of all insurance policies, wills, deeds, tax returns, driver's licenses, credit cards, automobile titles, and bank records • Copies of utility bills which can be used to prove or establish residency • Family records such as Social Security cards, passports, as well as birth and marriage certificates • List of medical contacts, including family physicians, hospitals, and other medical service providers. It is also a good idea to

keep a list of medical conditions, allergies, and drug prescriptions. • For pet owners, keep vaccination and veterinary records, along with up-to-date photos of your pet can assist in locating them if

you are separated. • An inventory of valuable household goods can be helpful when filing insurance claims. • A list of phone numbers and addresses of relatives and friends.

Recommended Supplies for Roadside Emergency Kit

• Jumper cables • Flares • Several quarts of oil • Antifreeze • Spare fuses • A flashlight and extra batteries • A small tool box • A can of tire inflator • Tire pressure gauge.

Surface Enlisted Spouses (SES) has been established to give military spouses a safe place to socialize with other military spouses outside your command about the unique lifestyle of the military. What’s great about this new resource is that military spouses can network, socialize and ask questions with other spouses outside their command. We have events/gatherings of all types every other month. These events have included everything from “Recipe Swaps to Pajama Party’s.” To be added to our event email list please send an email to: [email protected] with “ADD ME” in the subject line.
