Join Club members on Saturday April 10 for our first tour of 2010! We will be traveling south along Hood Canal to the beautiful Alderbrook Resort for lunch. There will be the usual twisty roads along the way, with views of south Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. This will be a relatively short tour, only about 175 miles round trip from Seattle. We should arrive for lunch around noon and return to the Seattle area around 3 p.m. All tours are driven on public roads, minding local traffic laws. We focus on safety, but always make an effort to find little-known twisty roads that are enjoyable at any speed. Your first time being part of a long line of shiny Bimmers will not be forgotten. While we highly encourage participation in our High Performance Driving Schools, no special skills or equipment are needed to participate in a tour. Come alone or bring the whole family. You must be a Club member to attend tours, but newbies can run once prior to joining. Visit www.bmwpugetsound.com, and click on Tours to review the Club tour policy. For meeting time and location you must send an RSVP to [email protected] by April 7. The restaurant has room for forty people, so if you want to join us for lunch get your RSVP in early. If you just want to come along and be on your own for lunch, that’s fine too. See you there!

MOTOR SPORTSiT may be The middle of winter but plans are being laid for another year of track events. We have five dates under contract with Pacific Raceways. Track days are here again! Our chapter’s track season begins in April: April 16, Friday May 27, Thursday June 24, Thursday August 12, Thursday September 16, Thursday

On each of these dates we plan to have a Car Control Clinic (CCC) and a High Performance Driving School (HPDS) running concurrently. We do not plan to have any events at Bremer-ton Motorsports Park in 2010. Prices will be higher (what a sur-prise!) for our 2010 events. All five CCCs will be $125 per person and all HPDSs will be $225. The Track Events Committee has made a few changes for 2010. You still need to registrater for all events online at www.MotorsportsReg.com. You will need to set up an account with Motor-sportsReg. When you register, make sure it is for the right event, because on each of the five dates there will be both a CCC and HPDS at Pacific Raceways listed on Motorsports. To participate in the CCC you must have a valid drivers license and be at least sixteen years old (if under eighteen years old you will need a parent to sign the waiver. Go to the Club’s web site, under driving sChools and look up waiver forms), Club member or a member of another club we extend reciprocal rights. For the CCC, you do not need a helmet, no tech required and convertibles are welcome. For the HPDS, you will need a helmet (we have some loaners) which is Snell 2000 or 2005 rated and you must be eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license. Convertibles are not permitted at HPDS and you will be required to have your car tech inspected. Starting this year your car tech will be good for sixty days, twice as long as last year. Your car must be tech inspected by a qualified ASE certified mechanic. See the BMW Club web site under Driving Schools for the list of mechanics quali-fied to tech your car and the tech form.

Once you register for any of the events, you will receive a full informa-tion package including directions to the track, what to bring, what time to be there, etc. For now, keep you and your bimmer warm and look forward to that April

the Car that Will Not Die: Part ii

The hydrauliC brake boosTer on my 1983 BMW 733i died. Again. For the third time. It wasn’t a big surprise. At my last writing, I described how I had to find and install a used hydro-boost unit on my car, since no one makes a remanufactured hydrobooster. I found it at Spalding Auto Parts in Spo-kane. Spalding is a great place that has or can get just about any used part your little automotive heart desires. They have a six-month parts warranty policy, which is a good thing, since the first one leaked right after I had it installed. They took it back and got me another one, no questions asked. I had the second used hydroboost unit put in my car. It started leaking within a week. Now remember, this is

a used part with a rubber seal and is at least twenty-seven years old, so I knew that I was rolling the dice and hoped for the best. Again Spalding took it back without any hassle. After it started leaking again, I was more than a little discouraged, because of not only the logistics of getting the car back to the shop plus the $250 to change the part, but also (what I was dreading the worst) locating another hydrobooster. I started looking around and stum-bled on an auto parts website that sells remanufactured parts. I looked through some BMW forums to validate their claims and sure enough, it was true they did indeed sell legitimate remanufac-tured parts for BMW, as well as many other brands. The name of the place is RockAuto in Madison, Wisconsin. I went to their site (www.rockauto.com) and found it very easy to navigate. I found the remanufactured hydroboost unit and then called their tech line just to clarify that it was the right part. I didn’t have to go that extra step but I am just that thorough. My research on BMW forums got me thinking about replacing the part myself.

There isn’t a lot of information specific to replacing a hydroboost unit on a 1983 733i out there. I did however find enough breadcrumbs to help me create a decent plan. I then went to the BMW dealer that replaced the last two used hydroboost units. I picked the brain of the BMW tech that did the work and gained an overview on replacing the part. I can do this because I’ve been going there for years and they know me like Norm on Cheers. I called a friend of mine that enjoys working on and modifying trucks and cars. He lapped this stuff up like a hungry kitten in a dairy barn. I showed him my research and he bought off on the procedure. We cleared our schedule for a Saturday morning and whipped it out without a hitch. I saved $250 and we enjoyed the experience, as well as the beers that followed. The car that just will not die gets another reprieve, I found yet another automotive resource in RockAuto and I get to share it with you. It doesn’t get much better than that!

reCenTly, a group of bmW CCa pugeT sound region members and other enthusiasts in Oregon applied to form a new BMW CCA chapter. This was approved by the BMW CCA national directors in January, and will be assigned approximately 600 members residing in southern Washington and Oregon—those south of Longview and as far east as White Salmon. For those impacted by the formation of this new Oregon Chapter, you will receive a letter from the BMW CCA automatically assigning you to this new chapter, unless you request differently. We are pleased to have you as a current member of the Puget Sound Region, but realize you may prefer a chapter and events more convenient to you. BMW CCA allows membership in more than one chapter for a $15.30 fee. If you want to transfer your assign-ment to the new Oregon Chapter, there is nothing else for you to do. However, if you would prefer dual membership, you can contact the BMW CCA National Office at 1-800-878-9292. If you have questions, please contact the Puget Sound Region’s Membership Coordinator Scott Winn at 253-468-2456 or at [email protected]. You may also contact the new Oregon Chapter’s President Brian Cone at 971-645-6228 or at [email protected].

The bmW CCa naTional board approved the establishment of the new Oregon Region chapter on January 23! Steve Johnson, BMW CCA Pacific Region Vice President, congratulated us as the newest chapter in the BMW CCA. This is a historic day for BMW enthusiasts in Oregon and southwest Washington. BMW CCA members have enjoyed being a part of the Puget Sound Region, but have longed for a chapter that would focus on meeting the specific needs of Oregon members. Many people have enthusiastically supported the establishment of this chapter. Thanks to all of you! Also, the chapter is very lucky to have a slate of very dedicated pro-tem board members and chairpersons: BrianCone President EricWishan Vice President AnhLe SecretaryTraysonHarmon Treasurer BruceFeller Member-at-Large DougGoodrum Member-at-Large ChrisTrappe Communications Chairperson TrinaKubeck Activities Chairperson AnthonyWerre Special Invest Group Coordinator

New BMW CCA Oregon Chapter

Oregon BMW CCA Region Approved We will need lots of help to get this chapter up and running, so please volunteer. You can say that you were a founding member of the first BMW CCA Chapter that will serve all mem-bers in Oregon and SW Washington! Our first official event was a monthly club dinner Thursday night, January 28. It was a great success with thirty people attending and a special cake with the chapter logo on top was enjoyed by all. Our general meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month.

For more information, visit http:// bmworegoncca.com/ or send an email to [email protected]. We thank our supporters in the Puget Sound Region and the National CCA Board for helping us to establish our new chapter. I’m looking forward to seeing you at our events this year. Brian Cone

The bmW CCa pugeT sound region’s annual banquet took place in early February. This year the silent auction was in full force with over 100 items generously donated from Club supporters. (See the list of donors.) The evening started with the silent auction and a little social mingling. Many were enjoying their beverages and eyeball-ing the auction items. The meals were fantastic and the quality was on par with the great service we had last year at the Downtown Bellevue Courtyard. This year the event was sponsored by Bellevue BMW and they provided a commemorative glass to attendees. Thank you Bellevue BMW for your generous support. With 115 people reg-istered and 110 in attendance we only had a few miss the evening festivities. During the announcements de-Anna Martin, Banquet Coordinator, welcomed everyone as they started their desserts. We had Chris Brown, President of the Inland Empire Chapter, as well as member, Alan James from the St. Louis Chapter. Brian Cone the President of CCA’s newest chapter, Oregon Region, spoke and handed the CCA Presidents Operations Manual back to Mike Ellis, along with a big thank you for being so supportive during the nomination of the charter with the National Board. Brian went on to show the new logo and announce the name of the newsletter “Under the Hood.” A play on words with Mt. Hood in the logo. Mike Ellis announced and thanked the 2009 outgo-ing and 2010 incoming board. Janet Trinkaus the Founder of Rise n’ Shine shared a heartfelt story about a child named Emily and then turned over the microphone to our auctioneer team of Jennifer Bolton and Meghan Kiernan. What a team and not only did they auc-tion off thirteen very popular items, they also provided some great entertainment. Our speaker for the evening was former basketball star Detlef Schrempf. It was fun to have a speaker who grew up in the land of BMWs and the autobahn. Of course, Detlef came to the United States to play basketball in his senior year of high school. But he

had some funny stories of growing up in Germany. He said he “never learned to drive slowly.” His father would take the family on vacation, driving 120 mph, chain smoking all the way, while no one had seatbelts.

In the U.S., Detlef’s first car was a rusted out Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Before his wife-to-be came to visit, he upgraded to a BMW 320i (E21), so as to impress her. It must have worked, they are still married. And his wife, Mari, was in attendance at our event. An athlete too, she was a hurdler on the German national team. In fact, they met on a German television program which fea-tured top German athletes. Both Detlef and his wife are very active in the Detlef Schrempf Founda-tion which supports a number of local charities. One of these charities is Rise ‘n Shine, the beneficiary of the auction. We don’t often get to tie in our guest celebrity and our cause so nicely. Detlef kept his talk pretty short; only about fifteen minutes, which seemed just right to most. Banquet coordinator de-Anna Martin bid everyone farewell at the end of the evening and thanked the volunteers who made it all possible. David Lightfoot arranged the program, Jennifer Venter coordinated the pro-curement effort for the auction, Lucetta Lightfoot and Duane Montagne worked countless hours the week prior organiz-ing the auction items, Kirsten Emerson, Sean and Erica Fields for set-up and clean-up and last but not least Dane Martin for support and filling gaps and ultimately helping me make it all possible! ChrisTmas is over. Visions of sugar plums have been replaced by visions of enduro cars. The kids are still enjoying their Christmas presents. Joe got a new Lego set but didn’t get to use it for a few weeks. Mike took it, built a couple of E30s and wouldn’t let anybody else play. We are all continuing to practice patience with Mike’s racing withdrawal; some things actually seem to work in my favor. Like when the house gets really messy with clothes and toys scattered everywhere, Mike will jump up tie a yellow and red stripped t-shirt to the broom handle and stand in the corner waving his debris flag until everything is picked up. Strange, but oddly effective. Usually the days roll by, one house-cleaning, kid-chasing, trophy-dusting day after another. Speaking of trophies, Mike had a great year you know…of course you know. I’d love to have some kind of trophy case built for him. This summer when he’d bring home a new trophy it went on top of his dresser and older ones got shuffled towards the

back. That fifth place trophy from the first year is squished up against the wall like the short fat kid at a junior high dance. Every time I put clothes away those trophies start rumbling and knocking together. I’m waiting for that fateful day when the domino effect takes over and they all come crashing to the floor. The dog will run and I’ll be standing over the bits and pieces of PRO3 glory. It’ll be just like that scene in “A Christmas Story,” no glue to be found, me pro-claiming my innocence and him snarling at me and telling our friends for years about how I broke his “major award.” Things did get a little ugly after that very first first place trophy came home from Mission in June. He was wearing it around his neck on a couple of chains and walking around here like the Mr. T of PRO3. Seemed harmless at first, but the poor kids learned to duck and weave every night at bedtime when he’d lean down to tuck them in and that thing would swing at them like a giant gold-plated pendulum. When the kids started waking up with bruises on their

foreheads in the shape of a little number 1 we had to have a little family discus-sion, and Daddy agreed to put away what is now affectionately known in our house as “track bling.” You may have noticed that we didn’t get a new camper last year. I noticed. The first race weekend of the season rolled around and found me happily packing the camper, surprisingly excited to get the race season started. But, as I tossed the first duffle bag up on the upper bunk Mike rushed in behind me, “NO!” he yelled, “You can’t put a lot of weight up there. This thing leaked this winter and that corner is rotten; it won’t hold any extra weight.” He was serious. Now it’s not just the “old, ugly camper,” it’s the “old, ugly, moldy,

rotten, potentially unsafe camper.” (Thank goodness sleeping quarters don’t have to go through tech). Nights at the track are already so restful, what with the drag cars running half the night and various relatives (cleverly disguised as crew) knocking on the door for cof-fee first thing in the morning. Now I get the added bonus of wondering if I was going to feel a jolt in the middle of the night and wake up lying on the cab of the truck. If this happens, by the way, I just plan on covering my head and hiding, so if you happen to walk by, just pretend nothing is strange in the Olsen pit area. You know, like usual. We did do a little shopping for a new camper this summer, and I’m not saying there are no decent camper sales places, I’m just saying we didn’t go to any of them. Sometime last summer we were driving along I-5 when Mike spotted a used RV lot, so of course we took the next available exit and drove past what appeared to be a few legitimate RV lots, finally arriving at a dirt patch with about five campers. I suddenly got the feeling that some poor fishermen went away to the lake for a day, only to return to camp at night to an empty pick-up bed where his camper used to sit. My sus-

picion increased with the discovery of food still in the fridge, beer cans in the garbage and a “Field and Stream” maga-zine in the bathroom. I was horrified. Mike was happy it was already partially stocked. Needless to say we didn’t get a new camper last summer. On the bright side, seasons began to change and I did a little shopping. Sometime early last fall I came home with quite a few shopping bags, and as I unloaded them I detected a small bead of sweat beginning to form on Mike’s forehead. At that point I knew my tim-ing had to be perfect, like attempting a pass while going three-wide through the chicane in Portland, so I pulled out one, then another pair of shoes, and when Mike had lost all color in his face I said, “Oh, and the tire invoice came from TC Motorsports.” Then, like the strong man he is, he stood up straight, took a deep breath, wiped his brow, and said, “Those are nice, are you sure you wouldn’t like another pair?” You know, this racing thing isn’t really so bad after all.

BMW announced the pricing for the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan, which will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. As the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US, the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will retail for $122,875 (standard wheel-base) and $126,775 (extended wheelbase). Both prices include $875 destination & handling. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly inter-preted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, and technology. Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with Active Roll Stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driv-ing experiences so broad as to be un-heard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21" ALPINA Classic wheels underlines the

fresh design language found through-out the B7 and imparts to it a distinc-tive appearance and powerful stance. Both standard- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will debut in North Americaat the Chicago International Auto Show and will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010. The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/lux-ury Sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec. With maximum torque available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm, the B7 accelerates effortlessly from virtually any speed. The B7 sedan is finished with ALPINA aerodynamic developments, including front and rear spoilers which not only enhance the appearance but also improve stability and performance at high speeds. In true “form-follows-

function” fashion, the ALPINA front integrates the fresh-air requirements of the transmission and engine oil coolers, which are separated out of the main cooler module for improved efficiency. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system’s two double tailpipes are seam-lessly integrated into the rear bumper. The newest evolution of the traditional 20-spoke ALPINA Classic wheels gives the B7 a distinctive appearance and powerful stance. The interior of the B7 sedan fea-tures ALPINA blue illuminated door sill trims, Switchtronic heated steering wheel in hand-stitched Lavalina leather, Alcantara headliner, Heads Up display, and the Black-Panel LCD screen instru-ment cluster branded with ALPINA. Hand-stitched Lavalina leather also covers the dashboard, door panels, center console, multi-contour front seats with heating and cooling, and heated rear seats. The full complement of BMW 7 Series exterior colors remains available, in addition to the signature ALPINA Blue metallic paint.
