In TouchIn the Johnston Schools, we have

great programs in place designed to help students succeed, staff who are committed to doing what it takes to teach each and every child and a community that is supportive of our mission and our goals. We also have nearly 6,000 students who are dedicated to working hard and learning new things. In Johnston, it is an honor to be able to say that everyone is devoted to high levels of learning for all our kids.

We have much to celebrate as we reflect upon what our students and staff have accomplished this year. All across the district, students are demonstrating their learning in meaningful ways and acquiring skills they need to be successful in the future. Johnston teachers also continue to grow professionally by participating in many hours of professional development and collaboration in their quest for greater instructional effectiveness. The district is honored to have Mrs. Sarah Wessling, Johnston High School English teacher, as the 2010 Iowa Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Wessling was also recently named as one of four finalists for the 2010 National Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Wessling’s dedication and service to students is indicative of the many other effective educators who work in our schools everyday.

Many challenges lie ahead of us during the next couple of years. The district is in the midst of reducing operating costs by nearly $1.6 million for next year. This reduction is the result of the governor’s 10% across the board budget cut in addition to significant decreases in state funding.

The Board of Education will be making important decreases during the next few months regarding finances, staffing, programs and services – all of which could have an effect on student academic opportunities and learning. Look for more budget information on the district’s Web site.

Upgrades and expansion of school facilities are tentatively slated to begin this spring for Lawson Elementary and Johnston Middle School. In addition, a district-wide planning committee, comprised of students, parents, staff and community patrons will focus on the development of a new 10-year plan providing direction for future facility improvements. The district’s busing service is also being studied again, which could bring about a pay-to-ride provision for students living outside of designated distances from their respective schools. Look for continued updates on busing and other important issues on the district’s Web site at www.johnston.k12.ia.us.

I want to close by thanking our staff for the dedicated service they provide for our students each day. Thanks also to our parents, business community and district patrons for your continued support.

Please remember, we are always open to your ideas, suggestions, opinions and concerns regarding how we might improve learning for the young people we serve.

R.O.S.E. AwardRecognizing Outstanding Support of Education

As we get closer to the end of this school year, we begin to focus on what will take place the next school year. One of the big tasks in front of us is creating class lists for next year. This task is taken seriously and continues throughout the summer. The following is written in our Elementary Parent/Student handbook regarding parent input for the next year:

Careful attention is given to the process of determining class sections. Johnston has attempted in the past to provide reasonable class sizes. However, other considerations are given to this process. The number one priority is to create class sections which will best fit the needs of the individual students involved.

Many factors are considered in balancing of classroom assignments. For example, classes may be balanced in terms of the number of students, boys/girls, personality, students with special needs, and ability. Occasionally the separation of students has a part of the process. Relatives, close friends and personality clashes are factors considered when separating students from

one another. The intent is to create a classroom setting that is beneficial to the students and does not inhibit teaching staff from doing the best possible job. The public must be aware that the placement of students is a task that is not taken lightly. There is considerable time and effort put into the process.

With this in mind, the school does not accept requests for specific teachers; however, parents may provide the school with input regarding their child’s learning needs. They should put their concerns in writing and address it to the attention of the building principal before April 15.

The principal has the authority to make the final decision regarding the membership of any given class.

We will release our teacher assignments in early August via U.S. Mail. It is necessary for us to wait until late summer to accommodate the growth that occurs in our district. Please contact your child’s attendance center if you have any questions.
