UT TYLER STUDENT CHAPTER REPORT

2009 International Builder’s Show & Residential Construction Management Competition

Report by: Tim Ballard This year for the 2009 IBS Residential Construc-tion Management Competition, the University of Texas at Tyler’s Construction Management Program sent a team of six students to compete. We left for Las Vegas early Monday, Jan. 19. The idea was to put together a proposal for a 152-unit condo com-plex called The Villas of Silverado Hills from the ground up. The project was actually built by and the competition was sponsored by Centex Homes.

The proposal was to include an estimate, a schedule, a pro forma, a land development plan, and many other components. Our proposal was 117 pages in length and included all the primary aspects required by the judges. Our team effectively compressed all the vital components of the proposal into a 15-minute presentation for the physical part of the contest. Our team placed twenty-fourth of 37 which, given our brand-new program and limited time and resources, we felt was a very respectful ranking. We were fortunate to have been nationally exposed alongside many other big name four-year universities such as Arizona State, Brigham Young, Texas A&M, Perdue, Cal Poly Tech, North Florida, Middle Tennessee State, Appalachian State, and many others. We returned on Thursday, Jan. 22, with a newfound respect for the resi-dential construction industry and a wealth of knowledge to apply towards next year’s competition. [To read more about this national competition, the entire report is posted on the NAHB Student Chapter page at www.tylerareabuilders.com.]

The Home Products Show Feb. 27-March 1 is the biggest annual event produced by the Associate Council. If you read this before or during the Show, there are always numerous opportunities to get involved. The Home Products Show draws 3,000+ members of the public right into the hearts of our businesses. We appreciate everyone’s hard work … from vendors to volunteers! A special thanks to Janie Malone and the HPS committee for all the prepara-tion and planning it takes to produce such an exciting weekend. It’s not too soon to mark your calendars—April 28th is the date to save—for TABA’s next General Membership luncheon meeting. The Social Events Committee is already planning for the Spring Golf Tournament on May 11th at Garden Valley. They will be looking for volunteers, hole sponsors and lots of great "stuffers" for the goody bags. Watch for more about this in weeks to come. Thanks to everyone for a great start to 2009. We look forward to a wonderful year and look forward to getting as many associates as possible involved in our organization.

To maximize the value of your member-ship dues, you can build your company base and build relationships by attending TABA’s general membership meetings, monthly After Hours, bowling and golf tournaments, cook-outs, the Holiday Gala and the many other activities hosted by the Tyler Area Builders Association. News of these events is posted well in advance in our newsletter, in Week-At-A-Glance and on the web at tylerareabuilders.com. Networking is cited as one of the most important reasons many members join our association. Looking at any newsletter will remind you of all the opportunities you have to be a part of the TABA team each month. These are unusual and turbulent times when we need each other more than ever. Attend association events, and be sure to do business with the members you meet there. Let them know that you have chosen to support others who work to promote and sustain the home building industry. And remember, joining TABA is just like joining a health club. If you never show up, you don’t get anything out of it! We hope you will take full advantage of the myriad of chances to network with builders, remodelers, developers and associates. We’re all in this together. Thanks for your ongoing support,

Kathey Comer Executive Vice-President

Thanks to all who attended Rally Day. Your pres-ence at our state capitol did more for our industry than you can imagine. Now more than ever we need to keep our members active with each of our legislators. Please consider making an extra contribution to HomePac. Those funds are important to the impact we have and help us fight against those laws that could have a negative effect on our industry.

I also want to make an earnest request of my fellow builders. Your presence is needed at each of our “all member” functions. Our monthly After Hours is an excellent opportunity for our builders and associates to network at no cost to either except for your time. Our associates deserve that for all they do to support our association. This is the Tyler Area Builders’ Association, and it is noticed when we— the builders—fail to make ourselves available to those who work so hard on our behalf. Our associates make up almost 75 percent of our membership, and they depend on each builder to keep their business going. You might be surprised at who you may meet – a new subcontractor or supplier who just happens to have the answer to a current problem or need. Be sure to watch your Week-At-A-Glance, and check each month’s newsletter for upcoming education opportunities. The next class offered for a designation is the Green Building Standards March 17th and 18th. All of our designation classes have been sponsored by BMC West, and we greatly appreciate their generosity and encouragement. Our industry is demanding a higher standard, and we must be up to the challenge. Make the sacrifice of your time to participate in these classes – it will be well worth it for your future. Stay active, encourage each other, and work to keep our membership strong. We need each other, and our association is working for you!
