95 Bus Timetable changes from 21st August 2019Now you have got used to the new 95 timetables they are about to change again – if only slightly – to cope with the newschool term and Waid Academy closing early on Fridays. The new school term in Fife starts on Wednesday 21st August.Beware that some early versions of the printed leaflets from Stagecoach don’t show the correct schoolday column headingsfor buses from Leven to St Andrews – check your leaflet against the picture with this article. What will you notice that’s different? Towards St Andrews the 07:52 from Crail High Street doesn’t get to St Andrews busstation until 08:40 because it serves Madras College on Kilrymont Road.On Fridays during school term time there’s an extra bus at 13:37 from the High Street that gets to St Andrews at 14:12.On Mondays to Thursdays there’s no 15:20 from the High Street, that bus doesn’t get to Crail High Street until 15:57 andthen arrives in St Andrews at 16:32.

Some of the buses towards St Andrews don’t start from Leven on schooldays (there’s no 08:15 or 15:15 from Leven).Towards Leven on Mondays to Fridays the 14:59 from Crail High Street only goes to Anstruther Harbour and if you wantto go further you will either have to cross the road for the next X60 (as these now go the opposite way around Anstruther)or you will need to walk up to Waid Academy where you have a choice of 3 buses including the school express 395.On Fridays the 12:59 from Crail High Street doesn’t serve Lower Largo, it will have picked up a lot of schoolchildren atWaid Academy and therefore runs about 3 minutes later than normal at its other stops.

The 95 still shares a lot of buses with route 97 – many 95 buses which arrive at St Andrews Bus Station change into 97buses and then depart via St Andrews Community Hospital to Leven. And many 97 buses arriving at St Andrews BusStation change into 95 buses. The 97 timetable printed with this article should enable you to work out which buses do this. You can get through tickets between Crail and the Community Hospital (which is across the road from Morrisons in StAndrews) and just stay on the bus as it changes route number. As usual, if you don’t have a bus pass, it will be cheaper tobuy a “North East Fife Dayrider” at £8.20 for an adult than to buy a return ticket between Crail and the Community Hos-pital.

It’s as fast to get from Crail to Leven or vice-versa going via St Andrews on the 97 as it is direct on the 95 – but bewarethat some of the afternoon 97 journeys don’t run on schooldays, particularly Mondays to Thursdays.

Copies of the new printed timetable are available from Crail Museum and Information Centre (open 11am to 4pm Mondayto Saturday, 1:30pm to 4pm on Sunday) and from the Bus Stations at St Andrews and Leven. You can also find the timetableson the internet at https://www.stagecoachbus.com/

This has been possible through the very generous cash donations we receive, andthe commitment of time and energy of the Editorial team.

To continue, and to grow our activities, we need your help! We will need to incure expenditure to replace software systemsand possibly printing. But we also need copy - if you run a local event, send us an account with pictures; if you have an in-terest in sport, send us your views; do you read a lot - then send us book reviews of what you have enjoyed....... We reallywant Crail Matters to be your newsletter, and to reflect your interests, but we can only do that with your help.

Local journalism is growing in significance, and we are very proud to be part of that trend - if you would like to be involvedin the weekly production of Crail Matters, please contact us.

Play spaces include equipped play parks, greenspace with play features (e.g slopes for sliding, logs for climbing on), and greenspaces for playing in, (e.g parks and woods, beaches). We are looking at the future of Fife Council play spaces. We need a long term plan as there are a number of issues with play spaces. • Most of the play equipment will be at

the end of its safe use in the next ten years.

• Many of the play parks can only be used by children under the age of 5.

Fife Council has a draft Play Spaces Strategy to address these challenges.

Letters to the Editor

All letters to Crail Matters must supply names and ad-dresses. If requested we will withhold names. Letters arepublished as received, and reflect or represent the views ofthe author, not the Editors.

Second HomesSirs,Might I be allowed to make some brief observations about theongoing correspondence surrounding second homes?Firstly, I am not sure that the Crail Matters editorial team hasat anytime passed an opinion on the subject. I am happy tostand corrected if I am wrong.Secondly, the anonymity provided to contributors has, I feel, allowed the expression of terms which are not helpful to rea-sonable debate such as "Dickensian characters" or "the Peo-ple's Republic of Crail" in letters w/c 12th August. Finally, given that Crail Matters is going into a well deservedholiday for a fortnight, that consideration be given for thiscorrespondence to be put to bed but also for all residents withan interest in the future of our Royal Burgh to reflect uponhow each can help to contribute to the framing of that futurethrough such initiatives as the Crail Community Partnership.Yours etc,

Paul N Hutchison, The Anchorage, Crail.

Sewage and ParkingSirs,Thanks to the ever eagle eyed Seagull and members of thePublic for alerting me to the Sewage issue near Bow Butts -pleased to say after chasing Scottish Water a subcontractor onbehalf of them cleared and cleaned the area last night Sundayaround 10 pm - and called me to confirm the work completed. It will require further investigation as like other areas in Fifeand Scotland last week huge fast downpours are a big problemand may well continue. I raised the obstructive vehicle parking on the corner and hillof Shoregate which is a vital throughway for fishermen andthe public and emergency vehicles with Fife Council RoadsDept last week and again today. However why folk should badly park vehicles there riskingbroken wing mirrors or worse baffles me !

Cllr Bill Porteous, East Neuk & Landward

Green SpaceSirs,With reference to the article printed in Crail Matters this week– Monday 12th August 2019 giving up to date informationfrom the Crail Preservation Society with regards to the ex-tended green space.I feel the information given is very limited and doesn’t reallyexplain the intention of the change being proposed and thus Ibelieve the people of Crail should be fully appraised. It would appear from the proposal that the field which is con-tained within the conservation area and has been for manyyears tenanted by a farmer to tend his sheep would be changed

into an extension of Denburn wood i.e. Woodland area /pathbut predominantly planted to trees. There is no indication as to the membership numbers of theCrail Preservation Society but I feel strongly that the decision to change this area should not be solely down to the discretion of this society and its members as such a change would havean impact to all Crail residents and its visitors.I feel a consultation/ discussion with the wider community ofCrail – whether permanent residents, holiday-home ownersor otherwise should be undertaken to gauge wider opinions. This proposal should it happen would be a massive change tothe landscape of Crail in an area that has been an open spacefor hundreds if not thousands of years. Some may say the pro-posed wooded area would be an improvement however it isevident on recent social media that others feel strongly thatthe field should be left as it is.My understanding of the Preservation Society was to preserveCrail’s history and heritage – a very good example of this wasthe recent renovation of the doocot. I wouldn’t have thoughtits mission was to make or fund dramatic changes such as thislatest proposal.I would suggest that such a momentous and irreversible deci-sion should be taken by the wider audience of all people inCrail rather than the few in the Crail Preservation Society. The field adjoining Roome Bay Avenue, Marketgate Southand Kirkwynd was presented to the people of Crail and there-fore belongs to the people of Crail. The fact that the CrailPreservation Society are managing the area does not meanthat an isolated minority group alone should be qualified tomake the decision on behalf of everyone in Crail to makechanges such as what is believed to be proposed.I would suggest that the Crail Preservation Society should doa leaflet drop or survey and/or hold an information eveningoutlining the proposed plans to give all residents and holidayhome owners a chance to have their input and possibly havethe final decision decided by a vote.

Name and address supplied

SauchopeSirs,Having visited Sauchope holiday/caravan site for the 12thyear in a row with our touring caravan, last week we were in-formed that owners, Largo Leisure, will no longer have tour-ing caravan pitches available next year. They intend to convertall touring pitches into seasonal pitches making the park ba-sically into a holiday home park. This is to the detriment ofnot only the many touring caravan and motor home visitorswho enjoy discovering Crail, but the entire community. Hol-iday makers to Sauchope would stay there from between1night to 3 weeks. With a continuous turn around of visitors to Sauchope, muchmore income is generated into the local community by themthan permanent holiday home owners. Tourists to Crail support the local shops, restaurants pubs, cof-fee shops and the many other attractions giving vital income.Hopefully Largo Leisure will reconsider this planned changein the interest of all in Crail.

The Crail Seagull

Where did summer go? Or rather, where did the sun of summer go? What an odd August so far. Anyway, along with the EditorialTeam, I’m off on my hols next week. I think I might take a jaunt to the Highlands, but if it’s just too bad, I’ll stay home in Crail.I think Crail Matters should take their holidays in early July - seems like there is better weather then.

Like lots of holiday makers, I get cross with the parking in Crail. All the cars make it difficult for me to find dropped food - butsome of the visitors don’t seem bothered by using bins, so at least that (for me) is a positive thing. But you might not feel so pos-itive! Lots of huge motor homes parked up on Marketgate today, 3 from Spain, one from Germany, one from Netherlands. In-teresting, I don't think we realise how many foreign visitors pass through.

Nobody took me up on the bet that the play area in Roome Bay wouldn’t be finished until after the children return to School.Well, my usual well placed mouse in Glenrothes tells me that indeed will be the case. No surprise there! Spied not one but twoCouncil trucks on Marketgate today SPRAYING WEEDKILLER! The weeds are about knee high now.

Material for inclusion in Crail Matters should be sent to [email protected] and received on Friday middaybefore publication. Community Council Notes

Next Community Council Meeting 7.15pm 26 August in the Town Hall

Consultation on the Common Good Register. Fife Council is undertaking a consultation on the Common Good Register. The Common Good Register and online consultationis available at FifeDirect (www.fifedirect.org.uk/commongoodregister). The Community Council understands that some peoplefeel the register is inaccurate - anyone who feels this is the case should either contact Fife Council through the consultationexercise, or inform the Community Council who will pursue the matter. We understand the Provosts Chain (listed as location notknown) is held by Crail Kirk. The consultation closes end September.

Parking ShoregateAs noted in last weeks Crail Matters, there have been a number of complaints about parking in Shoregate. The Police have beeninvolved and we understand this will now be followed up further with Fife Council. A proposal being actively considered amongstother initiatives is to have double yellow lines along the length of Shoregate to prohibit all parking.

Electric Vehicle chargingThe Community Council were disappointed to learn that Crail was not included in the recently published plans to install newcharging points. There have been extensive discussions about this already, and we understand that the proposal remains activeand will be implemented. The proposed location will be on Marketgate.

Sewage Outflow BowButtsThe scale of the sewage spillage at Bow Butts is simply unacceptable, and this view has been very firmly expressed to Fife Counciland Scottish Water. We understand that immediate remedial action has been taken, and that longer term action will be undertaken. The speed of responding by the Water Company is complicated by the very bad weather and flooding problems across the region.

Community Council Agenda - meeting 26 August 7.15pmThe following items will appear as agenda items: Parking at Shoregate; Crail War Memorial Trust.
