WISE COUNTY YOUTH FAIR

Legend continues to inuence ...Continued from 1 breeders in the nation, Shepherd spent the better part of his life in the show ring, promoting the Jersey breed. He gave hundreds of youngsters their start in showing Jersey cattle because he always took time for them, no matter how busy he was or what he was doing when they asked for help with their cows. One of those youngsters was the judge at the stock show, who stopped the show to walk over and shake Shepherds hand. Robbie Watson, 50, is another as is Buchanans husband Clifford, 59. Watson, who continues the tradition of her late father, Bert Pipes, by operating the family dairy in Decatur, said that Shepherd was also a big inuence on her husband, Mike, when he was a youngster. Mike was showing a few Jersey heifers in Houston, and the breeders wouldnt bother with him. But Billy Joe took time to help him and made him feel important. It was Shepherds focus on the youth that Robbie Watson wanted Jersey breeders to understand when she invited him to be guest speaker at the Texas Jersey Cattle Club meeting during the January stock show. There were a lot of new people who didnt understand our emphasis on kids, said Watson. When Shepherd and his brothers came to Wise County to dairy in the 1950s, the county was home to some 500 Grade A dairies. Today there are six. At one time, there were so many exhibitors of dairy cattle at the Wise County Youth Fair, they lled the entire cattle barn. At this years Youth Fair March 23-28, an estimated 11 youth will show dairy cows and heifers. Buchanan started his illustrious show career 50 years ago at the youth fair. He was followed 10 years later by Watson. This year, two of Buchanans granddaughters, Decatur students Whitley and Ashton Bell, will show Jerseys. Mike and Robbie Watsons daughter Katrina, a sophomore at Paradise High School, will also show. Weve come pretty much full circle in 50 years, said Buchanan. He recalled knowing nothing about showing when he started out. I just knew I wanted to show. His dad, the late Bob Buchanan, bought him his rst heifer and Shepherd taught him how to show it. His goal in those early days was to beat Shepherds son Mickey in the show ring. It took me several years, but I nally did it, Buchanan said. Watsons dad started showing cattle in the 1930s at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Its like a major addiction, Watson laughs. There is nothing I enjoy more than showing and judging cattle. Shepherd remembers the cattle shows at the Youth Fair in the days prior to the construction of the Sheriff s Posse Grounds. The rst shows were held on the campus of Decatur Baptist College, what is now the Wise County Heritage Museum in Decatur. Watson recalled the start of her show career at age 10. Her dad had always milked Holstein cows but felt the breed was too large to handle for someone as small as his daughter. So she got her rst Jersey and today, she milks a herd of Jersey cows. Like Buchanan, she too, came under the inuence of Shepherd. One of the things that makes him so important to so many people is that there is no gray area with Billy Joe, Buchanan said. Its either wrong or right, black or white. You know exactly what he thinks, and he doesnt have a problem telling you if youre doing something wrong. I think the one thing he loved more than the Jersey cows were the kids showing Jersey cows. At the shows, he always helped the kids. It didnt matter how far behind he was, he dropped whatever he was doing to help a kid. Buchanan and Shepherd, both retired from the dairy business, and Watson, who soldiers on, are saddened by the declining numbers of dairy families. Dairymen may not be able to text on a cell phone or operate a computer, but theyll embrace any technology that will help them produce more milk, Watson said. Sometimes were our own worst enemies. There is an abundance of food supply because farmers do embrace technology when it comes to their products. Watson gave as an example the use of sexed semen in articial insemination. We all use it now so weve got 95 percent heifers and 5 percent bulls coming into the milk shed, she said. Buchanan and Watson are following Shepherds lead by focusing on the youth so that the next generation can keep the tradition alive. They have to be encouraged by the youths outstanding showing in arenas where they made their mark so many years ago. Katrina left Fort Worth with many of the top awards in the junior dairy show, including grand champion, junior champion, rst place intermediate yearling and rst place aged cow. Whitley won senior showmanship, senior and reserve grand champion cow and rst place 2-year-old cow. Ashton won rst place 3year-old cow and rst place summer yearling heifer. They will all be at the Wise County Youth Fair Next week to pay tribute to Shepherd and to show him that all the time he invested in helping youth was time well spent. Shepherd looks back on his career and says, We lived the American dream. He and those he inuenced want todays youth to be able to do the same thing.

In many respects, theyre intermediate between bermuda and St. Augustine. They need more sunlight than St. Augustine, but less than bermuda. Mowing heights, water use, tolerance of trafc, and their textures are intermediate, too. Cost is probably the most limiting factor. Sod is pricey, but, youre right: zoysias are handsome grasses. POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF PRE-PREGNANCY STRESSWomen who are considering becoming pregnant should know that severe pre-pregnancy stress increases the risk of premature delivery. According to a 24-year study of more than one million women, those who dealt with death or serious illness in their families before pregnancies were more likely to deliver prematurely. Specically, women who experienced such stress in the six months before pregnancy were 16% more likely to have a preterm birth. When it was a child who died or became ill, the odds of his or her mother delivering prematurely increased 23% and the risk of a very early delivery went up 59%. These ndings should lead women to factor pre-pregnancy stress into their family planning. All women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should strive for a healthy lifestyle and follow their doctors advice. For further information or to schedule an appointment for obstetrical care, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our ofce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome. P.S. Researchers think that severe stress before or around the time of conception may affect womens levels of the stress hormone cortisol and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which is involved in embryo implantation and the formation of the placenta.

FOCUSBy ADRIAN ARREDONDO Wise Co. Extension Agent The Wise County Youth Fair is fast approaching. As a 4-Her, it is important to keep in mind Showmanship! This is one activity in 4-H that will help show the character you have developed in preparing yourself and your animal for the show. Showmanship: Showmanship is extremely vital in any Swine project. The way you present your animal to the judge can make the difference between winning and losing. Always present your animal the very best you possibly can. The exhibitor must be neat and clean with a well groomed appearance. Before judging begins, I would take my 4-Her(s) to the show ring to show them procedure and who the judge is. It is much easier to perform correctly in the ring if you know what to expect. Remember, rst time exhibitors are nervous and need all the condence they can get. The exhibitor needs to have eye contact with the judge. Keep a good distance from the judge, the judge usually does not want the animal right under his feet. Keep the animal out of the corners and into the center of the ring so

Remember, keep your animal looking as fresh and pretty as possible. Spraying water on some pigs will also give them a fresher look. Continued on page 11

that the judge can see your pig. Show with condence dequate preparation will allow you to show with a smile on your face. Be thoroughly familiar with rations, average daily gain, current weight, purchase weight, age and breed of animal so you can answer questions from the judge. I like for the exhibitor to use

CONTROL HOUSEHOLD POISONThe only way to prevent a childhood poisoning in the home is to make sure that a child cannot come into contact with a poisonous substance. Keep all cleaners in a high or locked cabinet, especially those containing bleach or ammonia. Store medicines in their original containers out of reach, also preferably in a locked cabinet. Treat vitamins as if they were medications as well, particularly childrens vitamins, which can be mistaken for a treat. Many vitamins contain minerals that could be potentially toxic, such as iron. Keep the number for poison control stored in your phone or in a place where you can see it. If you suspect your child has ingested a harmful substance, call poison control immediately.

Beginning April 1, breeding bulls entering Texas from any other state must be either 24 months of age or younger and certied as a virgin, or be tested negative for cattle trichomoniasis within 30 days prior to entry. The entry requirements are part of a regulatory package adopted by the commissioners for the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) Feb. 24 to address trichomoniasis, a venereal disease of cattle that causes infertility and abortions, and results in extended breeding seasons and diminished calf crops, which costs livestock producers valuable income. Cattle trichomoniasis is not a human health issue. The second phase of the program, which will address in-state movement of Texas breeding bulls, will go into effect Jan. 1, 2010. The regulatory components of the Texas Cattle Trichomoniasis Program will focus only on breeding bulls, which, even when infected, continue to appear and act normally. Under the new regulations, Trichomoniasis also becomes a reportable disease in Texas, which will give us more information on where and how much infection already is in the state, explained Dr. Hillman. There is no effective treatment or vaccine for bulls, and as they age, the surface of their organs becomes more hospitable to the protozoa, perpetuating the infection. Although the primary impact of the disease is on cows, which can become infected during breeding and lose the fetus, the cow herd is not included in the regulations. The majority of infected cows will clear the infection, if they are given 120 - 150 days of sexual rest. A vaccine also can be administered to infected cows to help control the disease in the cow herd. The majority of producers who commented on the proposed rule and members of the working group recommended that the disease in the cow herd be managed through information and education efforts. Producers with infected herds should consult with their veterinarian to determine the most appropriate measures to employ to eliminate the disease from their herds. Dr. Hillman explained that the interstate, or stateto-state movement, phase of the trichomoniasis regulations will begin April 1. Breeding bulls entering Texas must be ofcially identied, and may come certied as virgins, provided they are 24 months of age or younger,

WISE NOTESBy TANYA DAVIS Wise Co. Extension Agent In celebration of National Nutrition Month which is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association, Texas AgriLife Extension is focusing on Healthy Eating on the Run. Eating out is convenient and quick, but may not always be the healthiest option. Whether its carry-out, food court, ofce cafeteria or a sit-down restaurant, there are smart choices everywhere. By following these guidelines for Healthy Eating on the Run you can choose healthy meals on the run that complement your busy lifestyle. Think ahead and plan where you will eat. Consider what meal options are available. Some restaurant menus have a special section for healthier choices. Read restaurant menus carefully for clues to fat and calorie content. Menu terms that can mean less fat and calories: baked, boiled, broiled, fresh, grilled, lean, roasted and steamed. Menu terms that can mean more fat and calories: battered, breaded, buttered,

creamed, crispy, deep-fried, glazed, smothered, and whipped. Choose these foods only occasionally and in small portions. Because meals at restaurants are so large, portion control is key in eating healthy when dining out. Consider ordering the regular or childDAVIS size portion. Megasized servings are probably more than you need. Splitting the meal with a friend or family member and avoiding buffets are also positive strategies for controlling portion sizes.

Restaurants typically want to please the customer so a simple request like a side salad in place of onion rings with the ranch dressing on the side is reasonable. Additional requests might be: no mayonnaise or bacon on your sandwich, or steamed vegetables in place of French fries. Just keep your requests simple and dont over do it! A baked potato offers more ber, fewer calories and less fat then fries if you skip the sour cream and butter. Top your potato with broccoli and a sprinkle of cheese or salsa.
