Year C

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

Toowong Catholic Parish.
We acknowledge the Elders, past and
present. May we, too, be good stewards of
this land.
THE CROSSES OF LENT
The CROSS Of GLORY
At the end of Luke’s Gospel, as the risen Jesus walks with the disciples on the way to Emmaus, he uses the Scriptures to show them that it was necessary that the Christ should suffer and thus enter into his glory. So it is not surprising that, in presenting the Transfiguration when Peter, James and John receive an early glimpse of Christ in his glory, Luke should add the elements of suffering. So Luke is the only one of the evangelists to name the conversation between Jesus, Moses and Elijah as centring on his
coming suffering and death in Jerusalem, and is also the only Gospel to suggest the disciples were sleepy, as they would be in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Luke believes there is NO glory without a cross. In this, he shows himself to be a disciple of Paul who, in presenting his credentials to the Corinthians writes, “Christ has said, ‘My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness. So, I will glory in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me” (2 Corinthians 12/9).
Most of us are willing to dream of glory, but a lot fewer are willing to pay the price of that glory. We can envy the success of a Kieran Perkins, an Ashleigh Barty, a Kerry Packer without recognizing the hours and hours of hard work that have gone into achieving what they have done. And, as many a Greg Norman has found out, God help you if you stumble once or twice just short of the pinnacle others expect you to achieve.
Glory has its price; It has its cross, both in trying to achieve it and in living with it. We see it again and again in the lives of the famous and not so famous around us. This does not mean that there is something wrong with glory but rather, like everything else in life, it needs to be redeemed by an Easter reality so that the cross of glory gives way to a glory transformed in and by God.
God of the Covenant, your presence fills us with awe, Your word gives us unshakable hope.
With St Paul, we will glory in nothing but the cross of Christ. Fix our hearts in the image of your Son in glory that,
sustained on the path to discipleship, we may pass over with him to newness of life. Grant this through Christ, our deliverance and our hope, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, holy and mighty God for ever and ever. Amen. ____________________________________________________________________________

commitment Tati aspires to a future free from poverty for her family.

ENTRANCE HYMN: Save Us, O Lord Bob Dufford
Save us, O Lord; carry us back. Rouse your power and come. Rescue your people; show us your face. Bring us back.
O Shepherd of Israel, hear us. Return and we shall be saved. Arise, O Lord; hear our cries, O Lord: bring us back! (Refrain)
How long will you hide from your people? We long to see your face. Give ear to us. Draw near to us. Lord God of hosts! (Refrain)
Turn again; care for your vine; protect what your right hand has planted. Your vineyards are trampled, uprooted, and burned. Come to us, Father of might! (Refrain)
