OUR MISSION STATEMENT
SS. Peter & Paul Parish, a community of faith called by God to deepen
our relationship with Jesus Christ, serves the Lord by sharing our time,
talent and treasure. As disciples of Christ, we are called to bring Jesus
Christ to ourselves and others: our children, the sick, the poor, the fallen
away Catholics and those who need to hear God’s message of uncondi-
tional love and forgiveness. SS. Peter & Paul Parish is a beacon of light
rooted in Jesus Christ, passed on to his successor, our Holy Father the
Pope, and is guided by our local bishop to build the Kingdom of God on
Earth. It is our mission to shine the light of Jesus Christ in our world and
to spiritually enrich the individual members of the parish as well as the
larger community through word, worship, sacrament and service.

Rice Bowl - Encounter Annet
Annet’s youngest sister calls her Mom—and for good reason: since their
parents’ deaths four years ago, 16-year-old Annet has been caring for her three
siblings—Gladys, 6; Irene, 8; and Emmanuel, 10.
It hasn’t been easy. Ongoing violence in their home country, South Sudan,
forced Annet to flee with her siblings south to neighboring Uganda. It was a
dangerous journey, but Annet kept them safe despite threats from rebel soldiers.
For more than two years now, Annet and her siblings have been living in Bidi Bidi, one of the world’s
largest refugee settlements. Formed in 2015, Bidi Bidi is home to nearly 300,000 people—many of them are
South Sudanese who, like Annet, fled for their lives to Uganda. While Annet is happy to be away from the
violence, life in Bidi Bidi is hard—especially for a young woman trying to raise her siblings. That’s why CRS
is building houses for families like hers. A place to call home means that Annet can rest a little easier at night
knowing that her family is safe.
But that’s not all. CRS is also helping people like Annet learn to farm, and is giving them
the tools they need to succeed. Annet was given her own plot of land to plant on, so that
she will be able to continue providing for her siblings. In the meantime, she encourages
her siblings to go to school and does all she can to ensure they’ll have a bright future.
“My hope is to raise my siblings,” she says. “And I know I can do it with the help of
CRS and my Catholic Faith.”
Looking Ahead: Pentecost and Confirmation
This year and in the foreseeable future, Confirmation will be held in the local parishes within the Diocese of Scranton on Pentecost Sunday. This is a change from previous years. Also, Confirmation will now be held in our parish each year , rather than once every three years—a much nicer arrangement for students and parents. Keeping in mind the fact that Confirmation will be held on Pentecost Sunday, it seems reasona-ble to begin the liturgy that Sunday at 10:30 am, rather than at our normal 11 am.

you for your presence here for Masses and Confessions.

days of Lent beginning Monday, March 25, from 5:30-

Two Words of Thanks
Icon— The parish extends our thanks to the Knights of
Columbus for bringing the beautiful icon of Our Lady
Help of Persecuted Christians to our parish. We are
grateful for their foresight and thoughtfulness.
Lenten Fish Dinner—-Thanks are also extended to the
Knights of Columbus and St. Agnes School for hosting
a very nice Fish Dinner on March 8. Future Lenten
Fish Dinners are scheduled this week, March 22, and
then April 5, from 5-7 pm in JFK Hall. Take-outs will
also be available.
Ushers and Altar Servers for Holy Week
Altar Servers and Ushers are asked to sign up for
the various liturgical services during Holy Week.
Sign-up sheets are in the rear of the church;
please sign up as soon as possible because Fr. Ed
would like to be prepared in advance for this holy
season.
Chrism Mass
All the faithful of the Diocese are invited to attend the
Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Scranton, on
Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. (Sacramental
oils will be blessed; priests will renew their vows). Par-
ticipation in the Chrism Mass is a beautiful way to pray
for and support the priests of the Diocese. For reserved
seating, please call Diane Franklin in the Office for
Parish Life at 570-2-77-2213 ext. 1103 or
email [email protected].
What a Mistake! Spoons, anyone?
For Wednesday Lenten Suppers and at other times,
the parish has soup as a menu item in Grotto Hall.
Recently, we found ourselves in need of more plastic
disposable soup spoons, which are not readily availa-
ble in any quantity locally. The alternative was to
purchase washable, re-usable, stainless steel spoons.
Fr. Ed found a reasonable source on the internet and
ordered 100 spoons. They delivered 100 dozen
spoons. Lesson learned: Don’t worry about the fine
print; read the regular print very carefully!
Anyone interested in a dozen or so soup
spoons is asked to place a note in the collection bas-
ket with your name, phone, and how many spoons
you want —free of charge. It is less expensive to
give them away than to ship them back. No kidding,
this is a “too bad but true” tale, and a truly “Free
Gift” offer!
Keep in Your Prayers
This Easter Vigil, two members of the community
will be entering the Church. Please keep Nick and
Kara, and their families, in your prayers.
