3 St. Martha Church

Tomorrow (March 18th) I’ll be leaving with 41 other parishioners for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In the back of our church, in the saint’s room, our normal prayer petition binder has been replaced with a different one. Any petitions you write in this binder we’ll carry to St. Joseph’s house in Nazareth and pray for at the Mount of Olives.

Pilgrimage is an ancient way of praying in our Christian tradition. Catholics would go on pilgrimage to the holy sites in Jesus’ life, in the life of major saints, or to places of Marian apparitions. We get the spirituality of pilgrimage from the Jewish people. Whenever a prophet or patriarch encountered God in a profound way, they’d erect a rock cairn or pillar and sometimes pour oil upon it – marking out the site as a special place of encounter between them and God. Some of these would then later serve as sites others could journey too, to pray at, to dwell at asking for God’s wisdom, response, and blessing.

The Pilgrim lets go of being in control of their normal routine, of home comforts, of cherished relationships, to endure a simpler way of living, of hardships endured as penances, and of radical trust in the providence of God – recreating and encapsulating in their own journey the 40 year journey of preparation, penance and trust the Jewish people underwent between their leaving Egyptian slavery and entering the Holy Land.

What does this have to do with St. Patrick?

For 40 days and nights, in the year 441, St. Patrick prayed and fasted on a raw, wild and sometimes wet, mountain top (Cruachan Aigle or later known as Croagh Patrick {pictured here}) in Northern Ireland. Today there is a small chapel at the top and on the last Sunday in July thousands of pilgrims climb Croagh Patrick in honor of St. Patrick and in hopes of God hearing their prayers and petitions as well. Many of them do it barefoot, like St. Patrick, for penance for the times they’ve walked the wrong path in life.

This Sunday’s Gospel we hear of Jesus going up Mount Tabor with his friends – and his Father will speak to him and them there. It’s my hope that God will speak to me and our parishioners as we too ascend Mt. Tabor later next week and ask him to pour down blessings upon our families and parish.

What St. Patrick, our pilgrims, and the Gospel have in common today is that it is good and very necessary to carve out time, to come away from your routine and everyday life, to spend moments in solitude journeying with the Lord. Mountaintops have long been places of divine encounter. Jesus particularly loved to pray on the mountains and walk by the sea. Whether you go to a park, to Croagh Patrick, or the Manasquan Inlet, know that God wishes to speak with you, to spend time with you, and giving him your ears and attention, in a beautiful part of nature, is something that’ll help your prayer life and discipleship; it’s what Jesus himself did – and he invited his friends to join him. Peter listened and went. Patrick listened and went. What about you? In Christ

Prayer for Priests

Composed by St. Therese “O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with your Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Your holy love surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and in heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen” St. Therese, pray for us and the priests of our church.

[email protected] “The state of grace is nothing other than purity, and it gives heaven to those who clothe themselves in it. Holiness, therefore, is simply the state of grace purified, illuminated, beautified by the most perfect purity, exempt not only from mortal sin but also from the smallest faults; purity will make saints of you! Everything lies in this!” – St. Peter Eymard Faith at Home: Make a plan to bring the family to confession during Lent.

Church Teaching on: Confession of Sins – “The confession (or disclosure) of sins, even from a simply human point of view, frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others. Through such an admission man looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for them, and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible.” – CCC 1455

Lent – Make use of Formed for your Lenten reflections: saintmartha.formed. org The Society of St. Vincent De Paul, St. Martha Conference, will have Stations of the Cross on Monday, March 25th at 7PM in the church. All are welcome to attend. Lost and Found If you have lost keys or jewely. Please check with Paddy in the parish office.

Instagram: saintmarthayoungchurch Happy St. Patrick’s Day! and safe travels to Fr. Dave and all the parishioners on their pilgrimage to the Holy Land! St. Vincent DePaul Friendship Dinner: Every month several of our area churches take turns hosting a dinner for community members in need. The March dinner is located at Harvey Memorial Methodist Church and run by our St. Vincent DePaul Society. Many thanks to about a dozen of our youth from St. Martha’s that helped set up and serve at last week’s dinner. Attendees only had to find a seat and our youth asked them what they wanted and brought their festive St. Patrick’s Day dinner of ham, potatoes, cabbage, Irish soda bread, and drinks to them. Altar Server Training: Father Dave will be conducting training for anyone interested in being an altar server on Saturday, May 11 at 10:00 AM. Any child from 10 years old and up is eligible. Please contact me with any questions or to register for this training. Since we haven’t had a regular schedule for altar serving in a while, if there are any existing altar servers who haven’t been serving in the last couple years or so and would like to get back on the schedule, please let me know. I will be humbly assuming the duties of scheduling altar servers from our beloved late deacon, Ted Kotz. Virtus Recertification: As mentioned elsewhere in the bulletin in the past several weeks, we are now conducting recertification workshops. Please see the chart on pg. 4 to see when you need to have your retraining completed by (based on when you had your original training) as well as the workshop dates between now and early May. If you’re not sure when your current training expires, please let me know. Please contact me to register for a session or for any other questions you may have.
