The Deadly Sin of Envy Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The word “Lent” in English comes from the old Anglo-Saxon word meaning “Springtime.” (In Spanish, the word is “Cuaresma” to denote “Forty Days”.) Right now, the green color is reappearing in the grass around us and the little bright green leaves are returning to the tree branches. Winter has ended in Texas, and now Spring has sprung! The Second Sunday of Lent always contains the gospel passage of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Mt 17:1-9). Jesus takes his closest friends up a high mountain, and His glory is revealed. His clothes turn dazzling white and His face shines like the sun. It is a little foretaste of the glory to be revealed on Easter Sunday, the day of the Resurrection of the Lord. Last Sunday, we began to talk about the Seven Capital Sins. Do you remember what they are? Pride, Anger, Lust, Sloth, Envy, Gluttony, Greed. We covered greed and gluttony last Sunday. Today, I would like to talk about envy. In artwork, the allegory of envy is often portrayed by a snake (green-eyed monster) or a dog. If you own more than one dog, you know how envious they can be! Envy is defined as sadness at another’s good. Some examples in the Bible of the vice of envy are Cain and Abel, the brothers of Joseph, Saul and David, and the chief priests who were envious of Jesus. But envy also existed among the apostles. If you remember correctly, the other apostles were envious of James and John for wanting to sit at Jesus’ right and left. Probably the other apos-tles were jealous of Peter, James and John for getting the opportunity to witness the Transfiguration of Jesus. This tells us that envy is possible even in the church, the house of the living God! Envy is a sin of the flesh and of the world, and envy is linked to our pride and considered “deadly” because it can lead to murder. We can be guilty of envy of others’ wealth, husband or wife, prestige or honor. Envy is at its worst when we envy someone for something we believe we should have (sometimes rightly so). Even if an injustice has been committed against us, it does not justify envy. To be envious is to reject the blessings that God has already given us. Throwing away envy is a crucial condition in our path to salvation. The virtue opposed to envy is brotherly or sisterly love, in which we rejoice when others rejoice or weep when others weep. Christian love is the fruit that our Lenten penances should produce. As we look around us and see the Transfiguration of Spring take place during this Lent, we would do well to examine our conscience to see if any envy or jealousy exists. If it does, let’s con-fess it, and let’s love as Jesus has loved us and teaches us to love others.

El pecado capital de la envidia

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

La palabra "Cuaresma" en Inglés viene de la antigua palabra anglosajona que significa "Primavera." (en español, la palabra "Cuaresma" significa "cuarenta días".) Ahora, el color verde está reapareciendo en el pasto alrededor de nosotros y las hojas verdes brillantes están regre-sando a las ramas de los árboles. El invierno ha terminado en Texas, y ahora la primavera ha lle-gado! El segundo domingo de Cuaresma siempre contiene el pasaje del evangelio de la Transfi-guración del Señor (Mt 17:1-9). Jesús lleva a sus amigos más cercanos a una montaña alta, y Su gloria es revelada. Su ropa se pone blanca deslumbrante y su rostro resplandece como el sol. Es un pequeño anticipo de la gloria que está por manifestarse el Domingo de Pascua, el día de la Re-surrección del Señor.

El domingo pasado, comenzamos a hablar de los siete pecados capitales. ¿Te acuerdas de cuáles son? El orgullo, la ira, la lujuria, la pereza, la envidia, la gula, la avaricia. Hemos cubierto la avaricia y la gula, el pasado domingo. Hoy quiero hablar de la envidia. En ilustraciones, la alegoría de la envidia es a menudo pintada como una serpiente (un monstro ojos-verdes) o un perro. Si tienes más de un perro, usted sabe que envidiosos pueden ser! La envidia es definida como la tristeza en los bienes de otros. Algunos ejemplos en la Biblia del vicio de la Envidia son Caín y Abel, los hermanos de José, Saúl y David, y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, que tuvieron envidia de Jesús. Pero la envidia existe también entre los apóstoles. Si no recuerdo mal, los otros Apósto-les tuvieron envidia de Santiago y Juan por querer sentarse a la derecha y a la izquierda de Je-sús. Probablemente los otros apóstoles estaban celosos de Pedro, Santiago y Juan, por tener la oportunidad de presenciar la Transfiguración de Jesús. Esto nos dice que la envidia es posible in-cluso en la iglesia, la casa del Dios vivo!

La envidia es un pecado de la carne y del mundo, y la envidia está vinculada a nuestro orgullo y considerada "mortal", porque puede llevar al asesinato. Podemos ser culpables de envidia de la riqueza de otros, el esposo o la esposa, prestigio y honor. La envidia está en su peor momento cuando envidiamos a alguien por algo que creemos que deberíamos tener (a veces con razón). Incluso si una injusticia se ha cometido contra nosotros, esto no justifica la envidia. Tener envidia es rechazar las bendiciones que Dios ya nos ha dado. Deshacernos de la envidia es una condi-ción crucial en nuestro camino hacia la salvación. La virtud opuesta a la envidia es amor al her-mano o hermana, en la cual nos alegramos cuando otros se alegran o lloramos cuando otros llo-ran. El amor Cristiano es el fruto que nuestras penitencias de Cuaresma debería producir.

Así como miramos a nuestro alrededor y vemos como tiene lugar la transfiguración de la prima-vera durante esta Cuaresma, haríamos bien en examinar nuestra conciencia para ver si existe al-go de envidia o celos. Y si es así, vamos a confesarlo, y vamos a amar como Jesús nos ha amado y nos enseña a amar a los demás.
