The season of Lent is fully upon us and the events and message of Holy Week are approaching quickly. In the middle of this season came a Beach Club lesson about dependability…a simple lesson for third through fifth graders about the importance of being dependable. Our Beach Club scripture focused on the story of Ruth.

Do you remember the story? Naomi and her family go to the land of Moab to flee the famine in Judea. While they are there in Moab, her two sons get married. Then tragedy strikes. Naomi’s husband dies; her two boys die. Now, she and her two daughters-in-law are left all alone with no income, no resources, no future, no hope. They are desperate and because Naomi greatly loved both Orpah and Ruth, she tries to convince them to return to their own families where at least they will have a chance at survival. Orpah, with a grieving heart, heeds Naomi’s advice, but “Ruth clung to her” and uttered some of the most beautiful words found in God’s Word:

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” (Ruth 1:16-18)

Ruth was dependable! She was dependable because she would not leave her mother-in-law, Naomi, no matter how difficult the circumstances. She was dependable because she was unconditionally committed to Naomi to never leave her. She was dependable because she was willing to put her identity and well-being aside so that she could do what was best for Naomi. Even in death,

Ruth would remain faithful to Naomi!

The rest of the story is how Naomi and Ruth returned to the promised land to the village of Bethlehem. It was there that God provided for both Naomi and Ruth, there Ruth met and married Boaz, there where Ruth and Boaz would become the grandparents of King David, and eventually there over a thousand years later that their descendent Jesus would come to bring salvation to our world.

The dependability of Ruth foreshadowed the absolute and radical dependability of Christ. What we catch a glimpse of in Ruth is magnified and multiplied in Jesus. Jesus, too, will never leave us no matter how difficult the circumstances. In fact, truth be told, when everyone else has seemingly turned against us, when everything else in the world seems to be falling apart, when life around us feels desperate and beyond our control, that’s exactly when Jesus makes himself available to us. Jesus promises: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted; Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 6:4,6) Jesus, too, is unconditionally committed to us and will never leave us. The whole world may abandon us, but he never will! “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Matthew 28:20) Jesus, too, put his identity and well-being aside so that he could do what was best for us.

“Though Jesus was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8)

A note from Pastor AndyDependability

Page 3: March 16 Visionary

St. Luke’s Lubbock March 2016 Visionary 3

By his grace we are saved, YES That grace is all about His dependability even in the midst of my undependability. He is the Rock of my salvation even when I am experiencing the slippery and often fragile slopes of life and relationships.

So at Beach Club, I found the strongest chair in the building. I stood on it, sat on it, jumped on it. It held. Then I let one of the Beach Club kids do the same. He loved it! Then I laid down on my back, and I invited the little boy to come and stand in my hands as I held them up to the ceiling. For

some reason, that looked a little bit more wobbly, a whole lot less dependable.

The moral to the story is that Christ and Christ alone is absolutely dependable, but as we find ourselves more and more built on him and in him, we too, can offer that Christ-like, Christ-grounded dependability to others.

On Christ the Solid Rock we stand!

A note from Pastor MattPeople go into partnerships for many reasons: businesses, projects, and even marriages, just to

name a few. A partnership is an association with another in a shared activity. It takes a combination of both partners to accomplish a goal and to be successful.

In life we have so many responsibilities to attend to each and every day. Some responsibilities include financial income, maintaining our health, talking with God, loving our families, studing the Bible, taking care of our homes, following Jesus each day, feeding the kids and ourselves, mowing the yard, and helping others. There is so much “stuff” that we all have to do in a normal life, not to mention any of us who have added responsibilities, such as caring for our aging parents or members of our families with special needs.

As a responsible Christian, however, there is no possible way that we can be a devoted follower of Jesus Christ without being in a partnership with the Holy Spirit. A life of Biblical success requires interaction between us and Christ with every breath we take. This interaction requires us to be in Prayer, Praise, and Worship of our Holy King. In return, the Holy Spirit moves in our lives, prayers are answered, miracles are enacted and HE goes before us to show us the way.

1st Peter 4:11, “If anyone speaks, he should so it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” Continual prayer is commanded for everything in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “Pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus,” and Philippians 4:6, “…but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

My hope for you during this Lenten season is that you will realize the necessity for communication with your Heavenly Father through prayer, worship and praise and then apply them daily to experience a true partnership with Christ.

Moving Mountains, one rock at a time,Pastor Matt

MissionsLast summer, while in Israel on a mission trip, I was deeply touched by a Scripture, John 14:30-31,

in which Jesus gives the heavenly reason for His suffering and crucifixion: “that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me” (verse 31, NIV). When we think of the cross, we often consider the Father’s plan of sacrificing His Son to ransom the world from sin (Hallelujah!), but when Jesus saw His cross looming just hours away, He considered it to be an act of obedience to the Father to fulfill the Father’s commanded purpose.

This struck me deeply because as an American Christian male, I often have an attitude of not having to go out of my way to prove myself to anybody. If I do something it is because I want to and if I don’t, it’s because I don’t want to. Surely Jesus, of all people, didn’t have to prove Himself anymore! He had done all of those miracles and had all of those followers. However, that night in Judea, Jesus put His health on the line, His relationships on the line, His reputation on the line, but for what? To show the world His relationship with the Father. What a drastic act of obedience to die as a demonstration of obedience to the Father.

When I make decisions about what I am going to do in missions, the first thing I consider is convenience to my presupposed schedule and lifestyle, but Scripture offers no such example. Indeed, the complete opposite example is seen. The first thing I have to do to be able to pick up my cross and follow Christ, is lay down my entitlement to convenience and take up God’s will. And what is God’s will toward His disciples: To “go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). May my sense of convenience be the first thing to be laid down in obedience to the Father, to show the world my relationship with Him.

Music MinistryIt is 2016 and God is at work in all of our lives.

Some of us are in a season of pleasure and some of us are in a season of pain. In the midst of these seasons, God has a purpose. In the music ministry, our purpose is to glorify God with our musical gifts through expressing to Him our praises, prayers, and thanks. We strive to lead our church family in God-centered worship every Sunday and also at special events. In all that we do, this is our goal in 2016.

Right around the corner, on Saturday, March 5th, is the Pancake Supper, generously sponsored by the Methodist Men. While this is the major fundraiser for the St. Luke’s Singers’ annual choir trip, the Pancake Supper is becoming a wonderful outreach opportunity for our church. Every year, we have more and more of our neighbors enjoying pancakes and fellowship with us. I have a feeling that this year we will have record attendance by our neighbors. Please plan to attend the pancake supper, make a diligent effort to reach out to our neighbors, and help them feel welcomed in our church. While we like to sit together in our familiar groups and enjoy fellowship, let’s all make a concious effort to emphasize outreach this year at the Pancake Supper and welcome guests into our church.

With respect to the St. Luke’s Singers choir trip, this year’s destination is Abilene, Texas. We’ll be offering music at St. Paul United Methodist Church. This church meets in a beautiful and historic building in downtown Abilene. In planning this trip, I’ve had wonderful conversations with their music director. St. Paul UMC has welcomed us with open arms! The St. Luke’s singers’ repertoire has a liturgical emphasis, meaning that they will offer short pieces (call to worship/call to prayer) and long pieces (anthems). They will have plenty of music to make their trip meaningful and enjoyable. Also, we are taking a small orchestra on the trip: 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 bass, 2 brass, piano and percussion (I will sneak in my guitar on certain pieces!). Our ensemble is comprised of students and adults.

Finally, let’s all take a moment to reflect on this cartoon I came across. While it is humorous, it raises the issue of “hesitant hospitality.” None of us can claim to be perfectly hospitable to guests every Sunday. So, it seems to make sense to reflect on our hospitality once in a while. To what degree is our hospitality inviting? Do we offer hospitality with hesitance or with hope? What can you do to be better at hospitality?

WHO AM I?It’s Lent season, which typically means NOT doing, eating, or

drinking something for 40 days to prepare yourself for Easter. However, this year my wife, Emily, and I decided NOT doing wasn’t a problem for us; most of the time it is the DOING that we forget. So we decided to read through the Gospels during Lent.

In my readings I came across a verse I have read many times, but somehow overlooked until now. John 4:1-3 says this:

“Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John (though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them - his disciples did). So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.”

Did you catch where I’m going? Verse 2 is a clarification from John that Jesus did NOT actually perform the ceremony of baptism with his followers, but instead commissioned his disciples to do it! You may think, “well of course, the disciples who walked with him were trained to do ministry.” DO NOT FORGET these disciples not only misunderstood Jesus until the Holy Spirit filled them, not only were they OFTEN rebuked by Jesus for selfishness or lack of faith, but at this point they had only just begun to follow Jesus! These men were young, lowly, sinful, ordinary men! They had just started following the Lord and ALREADY they were charged with ministering to and serving the people out of obedience to Jesus.

This hit me hard with the realization that it is NOT the gifted, trained, or eloquent that are called to do the work of Jesus the Christ; it is the work of EVERY follower to lead and serve each other. You may feel like you are “not good enough” at something, untrained, unworthy, or simply too young (or old) to serve the church well. While this is certainly an understandable fear, it is obvious through scripture that Jesus never cared about age, ability, training, or worth when He commissioned His followers to lead. He CONSISTENTLY gave authority and leadership to those around him, no matter their status. This Lent season as you fast and pray, I charge you to ask the Holy Spirit how He is commissioning you to serve and lead as an act of obedience to the Lord; Jesus does not call the equipped, He equips the called, and ALL are called by Jesus (John 12:32).

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven” Eccl. 3:1Living in Cuba for 45 years is not long enough to understand this statement of God! Cuba

is an island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. There is no concept of winter, spring or fall back there at all. The temperature there is always between 70 to 80 degrees, with high humidity and very sunny days. When we arrived here in Lubbock, we were very surprised at how different each season of the year could be. The colorful rebirth of Spring, the dryness of Summer, the changing of the leaves painting the Fall landscape with shades of red and yellow, and the big, white, cold reign of Winter. Every season pushes everybody to change habits, behaviors, plans, dreams, etc.

On the other hand, the way this country is organized is unique. With every season we can appreciate a different kind of celebration. Each one of them with their typical objects, traditions, meanings, and colors. They are feasts in which history and marketing join hands, taking advantage of the weather, to create a virtual space capable of seducing people to be a part of it. This is one of the reasons why people are willing to come from all around the globe, even without knowing the implicit consequences that change brings. In this global village, Cuba has been excluded for half a century; so our return to this village pushes us into a diverse, but moving world, in which everything is changing and continuously absorbing, and making convenient changes.

Solomon spent his entire life to arrive at this conclusion. The next eight verses describe many actions acquired from many circumstances he was exposed to. He wrote it in order to open our understanding about how broad life is and how open to changes we have to be. It is special for those who are looking for a new heaven and a new hearth! So, we all are on an incredible journey, with plenty of natural changes and, in the same way, we are open to embrace them. We are getting ready to embrace supernatural changes too. That is what we need to keep ourselves walking towards God! For sure changes are painful, but growth will come with them. Be prepared not only for physical seasons, but spiritual ones too. So, wake up! The spring is almost here!

Appreciation Notes

Dear Andy and members of St. Luke’s UMC,

Thank you for your generous gift to Hope Community of Shalom. We are so grateful to you and our Lord, Jesus Christ. He continues to amaze us and bless us through people like you! What a wonderful Lord we serve!

God Bless you! Eddie Morrum, C.F.O.Hope Community of Shalom

A belated “thank you” to you and everyone at St. Luke’s for Debbie’s memorial service on 12/19. It was a beautiful service and we’re so glad all of her friends had a chance to recall a special memory they shared with Debbie.

Thank you for making it a special day for a special person.

Phil Folsom & Family

Throughout the last year, I have learned more about myself, the Lord and the world than I ever thought possible. I’ve learned just how sweet the gift of grace truly is to give as well as receive. I’ve learned that Jesus is enough, in all ways, at all times. I’ve learned that the world is not as it should be and that we, as Christians, need one another to live the abundant life God intends for us.

Thank you for sending me to the nations to serve and learn on such an incredible adventure!

I could not have done it without you!

Love, Bethany Anderson

St. Luke’s UMC & Staff,

Thank you so much for ministering to our family when Mason broke his arm. We appreciated your prayers and your checking in on him so much!

Mason loved the visit from D’Lea and the stuffed wolf and puzzles. He is calling the wolf “Wolf” and has been sleeping with it. The puzzles were perfect as well!

Thank you all for caring for our family and showing us such love! We love y’all and are so happy to have you all as church family.

Thank you! Sean & Morgan Vaughan

Thank you for your kind and generous support of Family Promise. Without you, Family Promise would not be able to bring hope to homeless families with children. Because of you, we are able to give these families the necessary tools to put their lives back together. The volunteers at St. Luke’s are providing hope to homeless families that they will have a brighter future.

More people than ever are in need of our ministry and that requires more food, more baby supplies, more transportation and more volunteers like you. Last year, 25 adults and 43 children escaped homelessness through Family Promise. Your participation with us has made it possible for more children to have a place to call home and more parents to have the dignity that comes from moving beyond homelessness. For that especially, thank you.

It is those with a kind heart and a passion to help others that make Family Promise possible. We sincerely appreciate St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Doug Morris, Executive DirectorFamily Promise of Lubbock.
